Song Review: John Mayer Trio - “They Love Each Other” (Live, Sept. 23, 2023)
He may have left Dead & Company, but John Mayer hasn’t left the Grateful Dead songbook behind.
Appearing at the Crossroads Guitar Festival with his eponymous trio, Mayer on Sept. 23 performed “They Love Each Other” in his own style.
With drummer Steve Jordon providing the glue and bassist Pino Palladino playing co-leads with Mayer’s guitar, the former Company man easily shifted the Dead song to his live repertoire.
The problem, as always, is Mayer’s vocal delivery, which veers from over-pronounced whining to off-key high notes. Dude sings as poorly as he plays magnificently. And his singing detracts mightily from his playing.

There is a certain sense of ecstatic elation present in all the records of those players that had to serve the needs of their collectives in the past. Richard Ashcroft, for example, probably saw himself as a winner after Alone With Everybody. Then again, the disc remains a fabulous listen, though the best moments of the LP could've been done with his Verve, had he decided to get along with the rest of the group and not cosplay Oasis. You see, the platter also suggested he needed an editor in the vein of his old bandmates. While the unwieldiness can be excused on a debut, you have to either tone that down or make this into your quality later on. Ashcroft sadly did neither of these two things and I'm saddened, because the LP presented a better solo singer than we got consequently.

Aguilar Octamizer Bass Octave Pedal
Just picked up one of these as well, because the ‘Sub-n-Up’ digital octave simulator in my Plethora X5 isn’t nearly as good.
After listening to a lot of octave pedals, it’s clear that some are much more aimed at guitarists, because their ability to track low notes really wavers. The Octamizer is simple, and sounds fantastic; like the classic Boss OC-2 but with a bit more oomph.
And now I want (need) a new fretless bass.
