whenever i think about wanderer, i can't help but conclude that that the bird in his demo is nahida. like beyond the recurring motif of nahida being a bird - first in a cage, now free of her restraints - i think that's just something she would do.
i can definitely see her accompanying wanderer on his travels even though he's like "i don't need your help" because she wants him to enjoy his new experiences and make friends. while also maybe annoying him a little.
like, wanderer's first reaction to the bird persistently following him in his demo -> "oh, not you again" energy -> "fine you can join me just don't bother me"...peak edgy younger brother going out the door + protective but teasing older sister dynamic. and guess who has the driver's license of the two of them, lmao...two guesses and the first doesn't count.
(also i find it interesting that his demo is titled "of solitude past and present" but...with nahida by his side, and in this case literally, wanderer isn't alone anymore. and he doesn't have to be, doesn't have to face his fears on his own, ever again.)

So I recently caved and watched Hazbin Hotel. I like animation, musicals, and animated musicals, so I feel like I'm kind of obligated to watch this new animated musical cartoon. After watching the show, I can't help but compare it to other animated productions that have also been released within the last year, namely that of Disney's Wish. I have a lot of thoughts, so here's this essay I spent like 2.5 hours writing :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slight disclaimer, I do acknowledge that Wish and Hazbin Hotel have very different themes, target audiences, production methods, pipelines, all the things. As someone who just enjoys animation, I'm going to disregard this for the most part, largely because I just want to ramble about the animation industry as a whole and probably could for hours.
Hazbin Hotel features a cast of characters trying to rehabilitate the sinners of Hell to save them from dying a second (and seemingly final) death in the afterlife. I have my own thoughts on the show itself, but I generally thought it was good. You can tell there was passion behind it and that they were allowed a lot of creative freedom, rather than having to pander as much to studio higher-ups.
Tumblr media
I'm choosing not to summarize Wish and trusting that if you've read this far, you have at least a fragment of an idea of what the movie is about (not that there is much of a memorable plot, anyways). I don't like Wish. The characters are static and flat; there's no growth or character development and we have little to no reason to root for the main character, Asha. The story overall is unmemorable. The animation is fairly lackluster and looks unfinished. Lastly, the songs, one of the most important parts of a Disney animated musical, are just bad and incohesive and don't fit whatever vibe Disney and its producers were going for. I want to add that I don't think these qualms are the fault of the creatives behind this movie, rather, the fault of Disney executives stepping in.
Tumblr media
Compared to Wish, Hazbin Hotel has interesting and dynamic characters, a solid art and animation style, and a wonderful soundtrack. Hazbin Hotel, despite being a show about the afterlife, has life and soul to it. This isn't to say I'm a big fan of the show, I do have criticisms of my own. My question is, how does Hazbin Hotel, an animated adult cartoon practically birthed from the internet, manage to be infinitely better than Wish, a movie by fucking Walt Disney Animation Studios? The fact that Disney, the studio behind The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast (or even more recent things like Moana and Encanto), is the same studio that produced a movie as flat and lifeless as Wish is baffling to me.
Tumblr media
My speculation as to why this show is so much better than Wish is specifically because it was cultivated from random people on the internet who were passionate about their projects opposed to a company like Disney, who made Wish just for money (and to promote their anniversary). Disney has changed from what it once was and no longer takes risks in their storytelling or animation, only pursuing whatever writing, casting, or cost-cutting decisions that will line their pockets best. As someone who grew up watching these movies so much as a kid and learning about animation and storytelling and music from them, it's so disheartening to see any creativity within this corporation be crushed. Walt Disney Animation Studio's latest animated films since 2018 (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II, Raya and the Last Dragon, Strange World, and Wish) have all been lackluster in one way or another, with Encanto being the one exception. Disney has historically had dips in the quality of it's content, but this new trend in addition to the rise of streaming platforms (and even the introduction of AI) leads me to have little to no hope for Disney's animation going forward. Passion projects such as Hazbin Hotel are what makes me have any semblance of hope for the future of animation as a whole. Seeing one of the leading animation producers dwindle to this extent and kill any creativity brought to the table is just sad.

demonising and dehumanising the enemy is wrong on both sides. by stating that the people on the other side are just irreparably evil and can never change and should just be killed you are setting up a slippery slope that leads to "this person is bad so they must be evil and should be murdered". fighting fascists with fascist methods is only beneficial to fascists and gives credibility to "evil on both sides" centrists. sure, punch nazis, but also we should be less focused on relentless cruelty and violence and more focused on reeducation and rehabilitation for those who've found themselves down these horrible pipelines.
people who believe evil things are not inherently evil demons who can never improve, they are human beings who were exploited and tricked into believing evil things and with the proper support & tools we can help them climb out of that hole. many radical leftists are ex-alt right wingers who learned one way or another that what they were doing was wrong. dehumanising human beings is wrong no matter who they are
I agree in the sense that I don't think erasing anyone's humanity is a good tool. Actually we need to directly face the fact that it's HUMAN BEINGS just like us who are doing all sorts of terrible things, because only then can we get into the nitty gritty of how and why and what we can do about it. Distancing ourselves from bad behavior by dehumanizing the people who do bad things isn't a solution, it's part of the problem. Because if the people doing that aren't like us, then we will just assume that we could never be anything like them. And if we feel inherently, fundamentally different from bad people, then we won't examine our own actions very closely. And that's dangerous...

My first Five Faves of the year. It's been A While, I know. I have drafts for others in the pipeline, and then @oknowkiss went and posted two bangers within a couple of weeks and it all went out the window because I just had to go all oknowrec, ya know? Look, whenever I read anything that I ADORE, the first people to hear about it are always my buddies @tackytigerfic and @sitp-recs - and you know I mean it when it's full on caps lock raving DMs - see also @wolfpants' The Hollow and @moonflower-rose's Pissing For England (reclists for both authors hopefully coming soon!) I swear I must have spent a full week going on about the first Elaine fic I read, any day now. I mean, truly, I went through all the emotions with that one: elation at finding such an amazing author, grief at my own inadequacy, anger that it was over - it was a rollercoaster, believe me.
Elaine's turn of phrase is always spot on, her inventiveness in world-building is second to none, and her fics somehow seem to retain this fabulous lightness of tone that keeps things just on the right side of heartbreakingly raw. She's undeniably hugely talented, and now has a fabulous AO3 back-catalogue for you to sink your teeth into, so please waste no more time in checking out her fics!
Read oknowkiss' work here on AO3!
💋 Historians (E, 30k, fake relationship, Gryffindors (and some hangers on), bad skiing, bunk beds, hot tubs, getting together)
Summary: It’s the Dumbledore’s Army Reunion Holiday, and Harry’s found himself in hot water with his friends once again, after telling them he has a boyfriend he definitely does not have. In an attempt to fix things, he’s made it his colleague on Level Nine, Draco Malfoy’s problem too. Featuring a ski chalet in Switzerland, a pair of bunk beds, and an agreement that should’ve been simple, were it not for all the bloody feelings getting in the way.
💋 in between two tall mountains (there's a place they call lonesome) (E, 8.3k, Relic Chaser Harry, researcher Draco, campervans, treasure hunting in Oregon, inappropriately timed wanks)
Summary: In the shadow of a mountain on the Oregon coast, there may or may not lie a shipwreck, on which there may or may not be a magical relic, lost hundreds of years ago. Harry's been tasked with finding it, and Draco is there to take notes, and they're stuck in a campervan pretending to be married, and it's all going to be just fine. That's what Draco's gotten rather good at telling himself, anyway.
💋 any day now (E, 17k, prisoner Draco, Auror trainee Harry, secret codes, a feelings puppet, morally grey everything and everyone)
Summary: Draco supposes he should be grateful.
The rehabilitation centres were the Minister’s idea, or that’s what the Prophet said anyway. Their stated objective is simple: to provide a safe space for low-tier Death Eaters and high-tier sympathisers to reconsider the entirety of their life choices. All guests–because no one is a prisoner here, the literature brags–are to be provided with shelter, food, clothing, and the guided support of a Mind Healer via a programme they call “ideological restructuring,” which is, of course, mandatory.
OR: Draco Malfoy considers the circle.
💋 draco malfoy's substitute murder service (E, 11k, curse breaker Harry, various incredible mythological monsters, Christmas)
Summary: When Harry joins the Curse Breakers shortly after his twenty-fifth birthday, he’s surprised to find himself assigned to the Department of Creatures, Cryptids, and Associated Calamities.
OR: the one where Draco goes goblin mode, and Harry has a thing for monsters.
💋The July Tree (E, 52k, Eighth Year, Greenhouse Four, Draco Malfoy does Muggle Scotland, The Who, First Times)
Summary: Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail… nor well-meaning friends, nor questionable communication skills, nor seven years of hating each other’s guts can keep Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from falling in love.
OR: It’s Eighth Year, and Harry Potter has detention. What else is new? Well, since you asked: Greenhouse Four and the Tree of Life, for a start, and then there’s the new shared Eighth Year common room, and Harry’s sexuality, and these pesky dreams he keeps having about a blond man pushing him into things…

Noogit9000’s 2023 (DCA) Fic List
Preface:
Before I started reading fan fiction this past year, I hadn’t actually read anything for fun in about five years. The work that these authors shared has gotten me through one of the toughest times I’ve ever been through and has helped me grow as an artist. I even ended up writing something of my own this month, which is a leap I wouldn’t have taken if it weren’t for these works and authors. I have an immense appreciation for these.
Here is a compilation of all the fics I had read this past year!
Bamsara’s Solar Lunacy
This is the fic that got me into the dca fandom as well as reading fics in general. I owe this author a lot for the connections I’ve made through this fandom.
I also highly recommend these other works by Bamsara:
Celestial Omens (that really like Fishsticks)
Also some more Solar Lunacy stuff that I really enjoyed:
Bytes of Lunacy
Simply, a Head Cold
Wireless Behavior
Three Days, Three Nights, One Eclipse
Saturday Night Insomnia
This author also introduced me to Cult of the Lamb and has a delectable fic for it:
The Rehabilitation of Death
This one is a highly praised Invader Zim series that I had started reading and am enjoying so far:
Cryptids, Emotions, And The Possible End Of The World
Alright on to the next one;
Naffeclipse’s Cryptid Sightings
The thing about Naffeclipse’s writing is that each story has its own unique flavor that really makes them stand out from one another as its own Magnum Opus level piece. When I’m recommending fics to others, I’ll always throw in “anything Naffeclipse has written” because you truly can’t get the whole range without reading all of them.
Other works that I feel are a must-read include
The Sleuth Jesters Series
These ones are all unique merfics:
Apex Polarity
Crush Depth
Soul Bound to the Astral Sea
These are just the ones I’ve read, I personally aim to read the rest of the collection as well.
Holding the World Series by StarvingMe and SmuttySkitty
These authors have delivered some of the most memorable scenes I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I think about them a lot.
I See You, Sundrop! by ShiraCheshire
This particular one just so happens to be the best written work I have ever read. I had picked up the fic just as it was concluding and spent a week straight just reading. Every chapter is a memorable one. I think about moments from this fic on a near daily basis.
So(u)l by Strawbubbysugar
Gotta be some of the best original characters written. I really like the characterizations in this author’s works and I look forward to seeing the development of their own IP.
Also read:
Bethroned
This one has some delicious world building.
Ghost in the Machine by Qwille
If you came into this fandom through the UTMV/Sans pipeline, you’re gonna love this one. This is one of those fics that is practically it’s own IP and has its own dedicated fan base.
Celestial Sundown by Clutterspace
This is I think the second fic I’d ever read for this fandom. I especially love the character designs and the original characters. What a beautiful world to have been born of a literal dream.
To Understand You by Dysfunk
When I saw this in my list I went “awww I love that one!” Tender moments and an excellent action sequence that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Holler If You Need Us by CasterCassette
Cowboys! I am a sucker for old western type stories, and this author crafts it perfectly. The artwork is iconic and this was one of the fics that I was really looking forward to reading on my “fic hit list” hehe.
Video Killed The Radio Star by TiaAndLulu
Also one that I highly anticipated after seeing some eye-catching artwork. As a WTNV fan, I love me the allure of the mysterious voice on the radio.
Alrighty, folks!
This concludes my 2023 fic list!
I’ve read at least a million words this year. I’ve taken up the role of a serial commenter. I’ve created a little bit of fan art, even.
I’ve experienced worlds and lived lives through these incredible works. I’ve talked my siblings’ ears off about them. No amount of blabbering could properly articulate the impact these works have had on me as a reader, a writer, an artist, a storyteller.
Thank you,
And here’s to another year of reading copious amounts of fan fiction!

UNICEF
Note: Keep sending emails and calls to congress to ask for a ceasefire as aid is not being allowed in Gaza by Israel.
UNICEF has been working in Gaza since the 1980's. It is one of 13 United Nations agencies implementing and scaling up humanitarian interventions in response to the immediate needs of children and families caught in the conflict.
"Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes," said Elder. “Gaza’s sole power plant ran out of fuel Wednesday afternoon, shutting down electricity, water and wastewater treatment. Most residents can no longer get drinking water from service providers or household water through pipelines.
"At least six water wells, three water pumping stations, one water reservoir and one desalination plant serving more than 1 million people have been damaged by air strikes."
In every war, children suffer most
Responding to urgent needs for safe drinking water in Gaza, UNICEF has provided water treatment reagent to sustain the UNICEF-supported desalination plant providing water for 75,000 people. UNICEF has further released medical supplies prepositioned in the Gaza Strip to hospitals, including medicines for at least 1,600 people, and is delivering essential mental health and psychosocial support.
“Humanitarians must be able to safely access children and their families with lifesaving services and supplies — wherever they may be," said Elder. “In every war, the ones who suffer the most are children. This is tragically true today.”

UNICEF, originally called the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund in full, now officially United Nations Children's Fund,[a] is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.[3][4] The agency is among the most widespread and recognizable social welfare organizations in the world, with a presence in 192 countries and territories.[5] UNICEF's activities include providing immunizations and disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition, improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing emergency relief in response to disasters.[6]
UNICEF is the successor of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, created on 11 December 1946, in New York, by the U.N. Relief Rehabilitation Administration to provide immediate relief to children and mothers affected by World War II. The same year, the U.N. General Assembly established UNICEF to further institutionalize post-war relief work.[7] In 1950, its mandate was extended to address the long-term needs of children and women, particularly in developing countries. In 1953, the organization became a permanent part of the United Nations System, and its name was subsequently changed to its current form, though it retains the original acronym.[1]

people think about racism in a... weird way, let me tell you that. it's either you are, or you aren't. that's a problem because of the way systemic and ingrained racism is built in the roots of our society. people have done racist things out of ignorance or any number of factors and people will continue to do so, even people we admire. people fall into pipelines as kids, people commit microaggressions that they genuinely do not understand, people share racist memes because they don't see the dogwhistles/ don't understand the severity and only think of it "as a joke", whatever.
thing is, billy could be completely innocent in his eyes. he could believe that he genuinely hurt lucas to protect max and nothing else. but his actions still contribute to racism. and it's fine to acknowledge that. whether he was raised to have racist biases, doesn't think of himself as racist but still carries these beliefs subconsciously, or he genuinely isn't, it doesn't really matter because his actions were harmful and they hurt lucas. and again, it's okay to acknowledge that.
i wish people wouldn't really swing the pendulum one way or the other, you know? there's a lot of complexity here. people either characterize him as a violent racist who chose to torment lucas incessantly, or an innocent boy who did nothing wrong. fellow people of colour can have their interpretations, but i like it when the complex nuances are actually acknowledged. billy, whatever he was thinking (even if he was justified or innocent in his eyes), still did something racist, and that's still something he can atone for by apologizing and working to amend his errors. it's not okay, but he can change for the better and do good.
i simply think characterizing him as a violent abusive racist is damaging overall. it paints a very specific picture of racism that renders every other form of harmful discrimination obsolete, especially subtler forms. people think racism can only exist in violent people with hate in their heart, and that's simply not true. anyone can say or do racist things. anyone can cause harm and further perpetuate hurt to the people around them. anyone can thus apologize for these things, grow, and change for the better. as people of colour, it shouldn't be our job to rehabilitate or soothe people who did racist things, but growth they choose is a net good. and acknowledging racism as something that exists outside of plain evil bigots works to tackle the very ingrained racism in our world. just think that's important to consider for everyone, and it makes me happier now that i've understood billy like this, because i don't like viewing the world in such a strict, rigid moral way.
I agree. There is a lot of nuance to the conversation that gets ignored one way or another. It’s easier for people to identify overt racism that manifests in physical violence, but not so much racism that manifests in institutional violence. While I am white and I don’t think it’s my place to tell fans of color how they should feel about Billy, I think a lot of white fans are unwilling to confront the ways in which they are racist and/or contribute to institutional racism. They think that as long as they like the right characters and perform allyship then they can absolve themselves of their own bigotry. Regardless of race, I think fans need to also confront how their own traumas impact their world view because a lot of people use trauma as an excuse to perpetuate institutional harm.
What Billy says and does can be triggering to people for different reasons, and I don’t fault people for that. However, we can’t just use our own traumas to ignore his or ignore the context of his words and actions. If you don’t take the time to contextualize his behavior then you will never understand how to address it. Yet, there are so many people who don’t want to contextualize his behavior because that would require uncovering really uncomfortable truths about society… and themselves. I think a lot of hateful reactions to Billy stem from people’s own guilt and shame and in performing such hate for this fictional person, they are “checking” themselves. Making themselves feel good. It’s much much harder to think, hey, I might have been a bigoted person in my youth and it takes hard work to unlearn it.
That’s why people are comfortable taking a pro-punishment, pro-carceral stance when it comes to “dealing with” Billy’s racism even when that very mindset stems from institutional racism. It doesn’t emphasize growth and change, which are entirely possible with a teenage boy who was surviving abuse at the time they said and did those hurtful things. It emphasizes violence as a solution, which is how institutions already respond to marginalized people who are perceived to have done something wrong - with violence. This isn’t to say people can’t or shouldn’t defend themselves from racists or racism. It’s specifically this idea that Billy needs to be eternally punished for his actions even when he hasn’t shown himself to be a bigot that doesn’t resolve racism but rather feeds into it.
These people don’t want to admit that they’re doing harm or perpetuating cycles of violence themselves, so they need to be right. They need to feel good about hating him, and they need to perpetuate this false idea that people are static individuals who cannot change. You either are a bigot or you’re not to them, and I think feeling the need to defend their investment in such a character many people who like him feel the need to call Billy’s actions something other than racism. It’s still racism. You can be racist without being a card carrying member of the KKK or a neo-nazi. It’s important to acknowledge that, but it also is important to acknowledge that you can learn from that and grow and change as a person. That is what ends the “cycle.” Not more institutional violence.

Little P.Eng. Engineering For CIPP Liner Design As Per ASTM F1216 Using Finite Element Method
In the realm of civil engineering, the rehabilitation of pipelines is a critical task that ensures the longevity and safety of underground infrastructure. One of the most innovative and efficient methods for pipeline rehabilitation is Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining. This technique not only offers a less intrusive alternative to traditional pipeline repair but also significantly reduces the environmental impact and cost associated with excavation. Little P.Eng. Engineering, a pioneering firm in the engineering consultancy landscape, has taken strides in optimizing CIPP liner design to comply with ASTM F1216 standards through the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM).
Understanding ASTM F1216 and its Significance
ASTM F1216 is a standard that outlines the procedures for rehabilitating existing pipelines using the CIPP method. This standard is critical as it provides guidelines for the design, installation, and testing of CIPP liners, ensuring that rehabilitated pipelines meet specific safety and performance criteria. Compliance with ASTM F1216 is essential for any project involving CIPP lining, as it not only guarantees the structural integrity of the rehabilitated pipeline but also its longevity.
Little P.Eng. Engineering's Approach to CIPP Liner Design
Little P.Eng. Engineering has embraced the challenges of CIPP liner design by leveraging the Finite Element Method (FEM), a sophisticated computational technique that simulates how materials behave under various conditions. FEM allows engineers to model the complex interactions between the CIPP liner and the host pipe, taking into account factors such as material properties, external loads, and environmental conditions. By using FEM, Little P.Eng. Engineering can predict the performance of CIPP liners with high accuracy, ensuring that designs are not only compliant with ASTM F1216 but also optimized for durability and efficiency.
The Role of Finite Element Method in Ensuring Compliance and Optimization
The Finite Element Method plays a pivotal role in Little P.Eng. Engineering's design process by providing a detailed analysis of stress distribution, deformation, and potential failure points within the CIPP liner. This detailed analysis is crucial for two main reasons:
Compliance with ASTM F1216: FEM analysis helps ensure that the designed CIPP liner can withstand the intended service life under varying conditions, as stipulated by ASTM F1216. This includes assessing the liner's ability to handle internal pressures, ground movement, and other environmental factors without compromising its structural integrity.
Optimization of Design: Beyond compliance, FEM enables Little P.Eng. Engineering to optimize the thickness, material composition, and installation parameters of CIPP liners. This optimization not only reduces material costs but also minimizes the risk of over-engineering, ensuring that resources are used efficiently without sacrificing performance.
Case Studies and Success Stories

Conclusion
The innovative approach of Little P.Eng. Engineering to CIPP liner design, grounded in the rigorous application of the Finite Element Method and adherence to ASTM F1216 standards, represents a significant advancement in pipeline rehabilitation technology. This method not only ensures the structural integrity and longevity of CIPP liners but also exemplifies how engineering innovation can lead to more sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure solutions. As the demand for efficient and environmentally friendly rehabilitation methods grows, the work of Little P.Eng. Engineering in this field is set to become increasingly important, paving the way for future advancements in civil engineering practices.

obviously terfism is really fucked up and terrible but the way they are treated vs men who fall down alt right or nazi pipelines is SO different, like yeah young women can fall down terf pipelines in very similar ways that men can with the far right, but i don’t see anyone ever discussing helping them rehabilitate breathlessly the way everyone does for men or admitting there may be some real societal factors that leads them down that path

Wendell and wild i have watch the movie i loved it somuch. they have afro indigenous protagonist and another trans indigenous character in that movie also this movie they BIPOC character
AFAIK Kat isn't AfroNative, she's just Black & Raul is Native+Latino. But still, all the rep is amazing!! There's hardly any White characters & 2 of the most frequently featured ones were the antagonists. It also decontstructs the "bad guy" characters & tropes you usually see in other movies in a really interesting way, which really fits in with the school to prison pipeline messaging, & favors a more "rehabilitation & reconciliation > prison & demonization" narrative.
Almost character that had the potential to be the "bad guy" or main antagonist in the film (like many other stories might have done) turns out not to be that. The other girls at the school had the potential to be bullies & the 3 mean girls, but instead they're simply overbearing & a little ignorant, but ultimately actually alright people who tried to be nice to Kat & welcomed her with open arms. Wendell & Wild themselves cause problems for Kat, but ultimately they're more like mischievous tricksters than malicious, & become her friends by the end despite literally being demons. Their demon dad invades the living world, & other stories might have made this like a boss fight & made him an entity to be "defeated", but instead he's given his other children back, goes home on his own accord, makes up with his sons, and then even sends the jockies to go help Kat and her friends. Even when Kat fights with her inner bad thoughts & the manifestation of her trauma/negativity, after she's made it clear it won't run her life anymore, she literally comforts it in its weakened state and gently holds it before merging with it, showing it's still a part of her yet something she's reconciled with. The only characters to get the typical "bad guy" treatment are the main antagonists, who are put into prison for murder, and this is karma because they're literally the people who were pushing for prisons for profit in the first place
Everything in this movie was truly delightful and I knew it was going to be amazing, yet it still exceeded my expectations. This is a game changer.

Daily Wrap Up March 7, 2023
Under the cut:
Ukraine and Russia have exchanged prisoners of war in another swap, announced by both sides on Tuesday. Moscow said it had been able to return 90 servicemen from territory controlled by Kyiv, whereas Ukraine said it had been able to bring back 130 of its soldiers from Russian captivity.
Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk region military administration, says the situation "is difficult [in the Luhansk region] but controlled by the Defense Forces of Ukraine." He said on Ukrainian television that "the most difficult areas are Bilohorivka and Kreminna" where there were constant assaults and shelling by Russian troops.
The Ukrainian deputy prime minister told regional media on Tuesday that fewer than 4,000 civilians, including 38 children remain in Bakhmut.
New intelligence reviewed by U.S. officials indicates that a pro-Ukrainian group sabotaged the Nord Stream pipelines that carried natural gas from Russia to Europe, but they have found no evidence of Kyiv government involvement in the September 2022 attack, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

“Another prisoner swap — we managed to bring home 130 of our people — 126 men and 4 women,” the Ukrainian President’s Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak posted on Telegram on Thursday. “Among them — 87 defenders of Mariupol, 71 of whom are from Azovstal. We are also returning those taken prisoner in the area of Bakhmut and Soledar — 35 people in total from the Donetsk direction.”
“Most of the people we are returning today are seriously injured. As President Volodymyr Zelensky says, the state must take care of each of them. Each of our heroes should feel that the state cares about them,” he added. Russia's Ministry of Defense also said the soldiers it was able to exchange for were in “mortal danger” and said they’d be flown to Moscow for treatment.
“As a result of the negotiation process, 90 Russian servicemen who were in mortal danger have been returned from the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. “Airplanes of the military transport aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces will transport the released servicemen to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation at medical institutions of the Russian Defense Ministry.”
“All those released are being provided with the necessary medical and psychological assistance,” it added.”-via CNN

“While most attention is focused on the battle for the city of Bakhmut, fierce battles continue a short distance to the north, according to Ukrainian officials.
Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk region military administration, says the situation "is difficult [in the Luhansk region] but controlled by the Defense Forces of Ukraine."
He said on Ukrainian television that "the most difficult areas are Bilohorivka and Kreminna" where there were constant assaults and shelling by Russian troops.
"They are trying to push out our defenders to reach Stelmakhivka, Nevske, and recapture these settlements."
Stelmakhivka and Nevske are villages on the borders of the Luhansk and Kharkiv regions that were recaptured by Ukrainian forces in September.
"When they [the Russians] lose personnel and their hardware is damaged, they take time to "recover" for about a day, replenish their supplies, and then go on the offensive again," Hayday said.
"There's more shelling now. We can clearly see that they have been given ammunition and supplies recently. That's why the number of attacks with 'heavy' artillery and tank attacks has increased." Hayday said the Russians were regularly changing their tactics. "There were small groups; there were offensives with up to three companies of exclusively infantry; there was an offensive using "armor" with up to two companies supported by "heavy" hardware."
In that way, the Russians were constantly trying to test the strength of Ukrainian defenses, he said.”-via CNN

“The Ukrainian deputy prime minister told regional media on Tuesday that fewer than 4,000 civilians, including 38 children remain in Bakhmut.
“Approximately 38 children, as far as we know, remain in Bakhmut today,” AFP quotes Iryna Vereshchuk saying.
The city, the focus of fierce fighting in the Donbas region, had an estimated prewar population of about 70,000 people.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said Ukraine is committed to defending the embattled city despite a partial encirclement, and there are conflicting reports about the state of the defence of the city.
Jan Gagin, an adviser to the Russian-installed leaders in the occupied portion of Donetsk, has claimed that Russian forces control about half of Bakhmut, while Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner mercenary group whose troops are spearheading the attack, has said that between 12,000 and 20,000 Ukrainian troops remain defending it.
Russia’s defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, said on Tuesday the seizure of Bakhmut would allow Moscow’s forces to mount further offensive operations.”-via The Guardian

“New intelligence reviewed by U.S. officials indicates that a pro-Ukrainian group sabotaged the Nord Stream pipelines that carried natural gas from Russia to Europe, but they have found no evidence of Kyiv government involvement in the September 2022 attack, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The U.S. and NATO have called the attacks, which occurred seven months into Russia's invasion of Ukraine and destroyed three of the four pipelines running under the Baltic Sea, "an act of sabotage".
Moscow has blamed Ukraine's Western supporters and has called on the U.N. Security Council to independently investigate. Neither side has provided evidence.
Citing U.S. officials, the New York Times said there was no evidence that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy or his top aides were involved in the operation or that the perpetrators were acting at the behest of any Ukrainian government officials.
White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that Washington was waiting for ongoing investigations in Germany, Sweden and Denmark - all in the Baltic region - to conclude, "and only then should we be looking at what follow-on actions might or may not be appropriate".
Responding to the report, senior Zelenskiy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told Reuters that the Kyiv government was "absolutely not involved" in the sabotage strike, and had no information about what had happened.
Russia's deputy United Nations ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told Reuters the report proved Moscow's push for the Security Council to set up an independent inquiry was "very timely" and it would seek a vote on a draft resolution by the end of March.
The Times wrote that the intelligence review suggested those behind the pipeline explosions, which spewed gas into the Baltic, were Ukrainian or Russian nationals, or a combination of the two, who opposed Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But the review did not specify the members of the group or who directed or paid for the operation, it said.
"U.S. officials declined to disclose the nature of the intelligence, how it was obtained or any details of the strength of the evidence. They have said that there were no firm conclusions about it," the Times added.
Built by Russia's state-controlled Gazprom (GAZP.MM), the Nord Stream gas pipelines connected Russia and Germany. Nord Stream 1 was completed in 2011, and Nord Stream 2 in 2021 - over the objections of Ukraine and some of Germany's allies including the U.S. who feared this would allow Moscow to blackmail Berlin by threatening to curb supplies.
Germany ended up halting certification of Nord Stream 2 amid signs that Russia was about to invade Ukraine, and since then Europe has drastically cut energy imports from Russia.
Gazprom representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the New York Times report.”-via Reuters

When poor tenants were faced with the decay of their buildings and the disruption of services as the abandonment rate accelerated during the late 1960s, some, rather than suffering in silence until the situation became unbearable and then moving, turned to the central strategy of the tenant movement, the rent strike. However, many of those facing incipient abandonment did not achieve the results they hoped for from the withholding of their rents: rather than giving them the leverage to persuade their landlord to improve their living conditions, this strategy often hastened his exit, leaving the tenants still cold in winter but with a large collective bank account. By 1969-1970 some building organizations were responding pragmatically to this situation by spending the rents they had collected to buy oil and make urgent repairs. However, since the experienced leaders of tenant organizations -- notably those associated with Met Council -- initially regarded such tenant seizures of de facto control as too risky, this strategy was not fostered or publicized at that time. Later, as experience in these isolated buildings taught movement leaders that tenants were not, through this strategy, inviting eviction, its use spread rapidly until, by the mid-1970s, it was the most common form of rent strike.
Meanwhile, several activist professionals -- priests and lawyers -- had suggested that one solution to the abandonment problem was to cede abandoned buildings to their tenants, thus creating low-income cooperatives. They raised the hope that owner occupancy could reverse decay and even curb the prevailing civil unrest by giving the poor and alienated a stake in the system. Some of these professionals, each originally acting in isolation, took the initiative in putting these ideas into action. The first low-income conversion to tenant ownership was initiated by a Harlem church in 1963; the second, sponsored by a lawyer, commenced in 1967; others followed rapidly. At this point the concept attracted the attention of the city administration, and in mid-1969 Jason Nathan, HDA administrator, created an exploratory cooperative unit within the Office of Special Improvements (OSI) and staffed it with eight college interns -- but gave them no resources, budget, or support staff.
In February 1970 Robert Schur, a West Side lawyer who had been prominent in promoting the plan, was appointed head of OSI and, having secured the promise of a budget for the purpose, pledged to get a co-op program off the ground. Schur utilized the Municipal Loan Program, which had been designed by the city to help landlords rehabilitate their buildings, and the federal Model Cities Program, to provide loans to tenants for the purchase and rehabilitation of deteriorated buildings. This cost was to be paid off, at low or no interest, by the new tenant cooperators. The extent of rehabilitation was usually curtailed -- "moderate" rather than "gut" -- in order to limit costs and typically was restricted to the "major systems" -- plumbing, wiring, heating, the front door, and roof. All the co-ops were required by the city to incorporate as Housing Development Fund corporations, which imposed income limitations. However, the majority did not take the second step of registering with the attorney general as formal cooperatives and thus avoided the costs of issuing a plan/prospectus and of allocating shares. Content to remain informal co-ops, they granted all tenant cooperators an equal vote at meetings. With Schur, able and committed, in command of an enthusiastic staff, the flow of would-be co-ops in the pipeline strengthened considerably.

Through some great universal schism, your world was separated from the world of Superman and the Justice League, but do you ever think about what could have been had your world still been a part of theirs?
I think it's possible Superman would get involved and try to save you or get you away from Vought fairly early on. Lex Luthor might also try to manipulate you to come work for him.
Batman certainly would very quickly learn and start to handle Vought by going after them the legal way. Lex probably would interfere and buy out Vought. But I think Bats probably would cock block Butcher like a major amount like Cock Blockula and if not beat the shit out of him himself, have at least one friend give him a brutal spanking.
That's if the Joker doesn't get involved for Butcher stealing the Bat's attention...
If we're talking about the alternate world that was used for the comic you? Batman would have definitely been the first to figure out what was happening with Vought and the abused children to deranged celebrity pipeline they had, and worked out a more efficient way to stop it and disarm them. He probably would have also figured out Butcher had the wrong guy in his sights.
Martian Manhunter could have fairly easily detained you until Superman could help you. I'm betting there would have been a minor though majorly destructive fight where he got you to stand down and then offered his hand to properly train and rehabilitate you. He'd have given you that choice or if you threw a tantrum, put you in the Phantom Zone so you weren't a threat to people or to cool off.
When you showed enough progress, he might have even put you on the farm with Ma and Pa Kent just to show you what having loving and caring people in your life was like. He could have been like an older brother to you and I think you would have actually liked Kal-El a lot.
Butcher would have likely ended up in Arkham at odds with the clown and similar attempts made to rehabilitate him. And I think seeing you reform would have made him want to do similar, even if just as a dick measuring contest to see who can be the more good person. Who knows, maybe you could have even become friends that way.
Which is a question in itself. You could always just troll Butcher beyond all reason, and you have, if you just put in a little bit of effort. Especially if you did decide to be the perfect good guy. His obsession would worsen, but if you were actually good, he would no longer be able to convince himself that he wasn't the bad guy. Even if you did do good for the wrong reasons.
Not to say that everything would be hunky dory, but I do think things could be a lot better for you with Superman...
Mostly, I just wanna see what would happen if Diana wrapped the Lasso of Truth around you and Butcher. At the same time or separate, either or is fine. You have to admit not being in a world with Wonder Woman is tragic.
Not so much if Darkseid or Granny Goodness got their hands on you...
But anyway I don't know, what do you think?

Same anon. you put anakin committing genocide on the same thread where you mention the US’s minor crime to prison pipeline implies there’s some link. thats why i asked. im not taking anything out of context. Anakin isnt some black or brown kid. hes a white man who got mad and committed genocide.
Anon, I don't know if there's a clearer way to explain that my commentary is about fandom attitudes reflecting a greater societal problem regarding focus on punishment over rehabilitation and reparations.
People focus on punishing Anakin. They should focus on reparations to the Tuskens. This is related to the same societal view that punishment of crime-doers is more important than actually helping affected communities. My TLDR was a tongue in cheek way of trying to get people to step back and think about why they approach this topic in this way, if they are ostensibly in favor of breaking down things like the school to prison pipeline.
Is it the same thing? No. Is the attitude that drives them the same? Yes. A major step to undoing real-world harm is to pick apart why we think the way we do. Fandom can often be a lens into that, which is easier and safer to untangle in privacy, much like how reading fic can be a pathway to addressing internalized homophobia.
This is the question:
If you think Anakin deserves to be punished for the Tusken Massacre, and that comes to mind before you address reparations to the Tuskens or rehabilitation to Anakin's violent tendencies and general mental state, why? Why is punishment first? And if it is first, then how does that relate to your approach to real-world issues?
