FFXIVwrite 2023 - 15 Portentous

Castellum Velodyna loomed in the distance, an ominous beacon of the empires power. Thyn'a had joined Pipin along with the twins, Alphinaud and Alisaie, on a reconnaissance mission, to find the outposts weaknesses.

They'd left the Reach at dusk, when the glamour was less likely to be detected, and when they themselves would be less likely to be spotted. Beyond the East End, just north of the Velodyna they laid in wait using the rocky terrain to their advantage.

Thought Pipin was of small stature, Thyn'a thought him twice as brave as herself, and she was honored to help him on the field. With eager ears and keen eyes she help him watch for any movement from the tower. He'd apprised them of things to look for and happily, things seemed as they anticipated.

"Excellent... The disposition of the imperial forces is exactly as expected. I will notify Father." Pipin's tone was pleased as he observed Velodyna through his spy glass.

Thyn'a had dared to feel at ease despite their precarious position so close to the enemy. It was quiet. Perhaps too quiet. Suddenly there was a rumble in the distance, and her ears flicked atop her head, swiveling to try and pinpoint the location the noise came from. Their surrounding made it hard to.

"Cannon fire! Where did it come from?" Pipin dropped the scope from his eyes, his posture suddenly still as he stood at full alert.

"Smoke! There! Is that─" Alisaie stood besides her, and Thyn'a followed her up, gaze landing on the sight that alerted her. Portentous flames flickered in the distance.

"It's the Reach." Thyn'a hissed.

Alphinaud tried communicated via his linkpearl, but it was of no use, and Alisaie wondered if this had been a plot from the Garleans all along.

"Too early to draw conclusions. We must abort the assault and return to the Reach at once." Pipin tried to reason.

Thyn'a was already found her legs pushing her back to the base, hoping against hope that they would make it in time.

Can Yoshi-P please stop justifying skin colour changes in his games with awkward walls of text?

First it's that "It's fantasy, but also reality."

But now it's "It's fantasy, so we're doing what we want."

The FF16 one is at least understandable considering the subject matters the game deals with, but it's still imperfect because you can do PoC without that baggage.

Saying "we mean no harm" after all of those flimsy excuses with Y'Shtola feels so dumb to me.

I can absolutely understand the 2.0 lighting issues. Fine. That change wasn't that extreme.

And I even defended this because in a bunch of in-game artwork in ShB she's still pretty tan, but I'll believe it when we see a concept art saying she's by design supposed to be tanned, not PoC.

I'll even believe they pay this detailed attention to character design.

It's so annoying because in a new panel for Dawntrail they also say they're paying special attention to PoC representation for this expansion because they've not always done it right in the past.

And there they mentioned it's fantasy, but there is the need to still respect the irl cultures they draw from.

It's a inconsistent mess because whitewashing is still fairly common and "they're just tan" is a pretty common excuse that Japan isn't immune from either, even if it isn't entirely delibrate or conscious. (In Japanese context there is also making characters "more Asian" by removing their tan.)

And then there are some of the disrespectful outfits in Mogstation.

I still get the sense the underlying implication is that the game got more popular and Y'Shtola's tan became "less appealing" from a marketing standpoint, but they just can't say it.

But hey, going by a good faith interpretation, they better be consistent with it.

Everyone should just be tan after Dawntrail.

Then I might believe it.

FFXIV has many good to great PoC characters with complex, complete storylines, but it still falls into some pretty annoying tropes.

Most of them either die (Teledji, Ilberd, Conrad, Ahewann), are written out after their story is basically complete (Hermes, Lahabrea, Ericthonius, Lolorito) or are pushed to minor roles or were minor roles to begin with (Raubahn, Pipin, Gaius, Arenvald, Lyna).

Truth is, Y'Shtola is the only character that truly has gone through this pretty noticably, so this adds credence to her "just being tan", but I think she's also the only main character who could be 100% read as PoC along with any PoC WoL designs because she was "tan" for so long.

Currently, only Arenvald, Raubahn, Pipin, Gaius, Vytra, Cyella and Lyna could potentially become relevant in the future without "bringing them back" and as said, half of these are pretty minor characters or also have pretty complete stories.

Erenville looks to have a more major role in Dawntrail, at least.

And I think Cyella and the entire group on the First might end up getting a secondary plotline restoring the 13th along with Zero after Zeromus is defeated.

(That 6.5 screenshot is super intriguing.)

XIV is probably better about PoC than 90% of popular fantasy, but it still has its flaws and wierd justifications like this really don't help.

Please racer au Eclipse??? I love grungy world's like this. QwQ Reminded me of the time Grandpa took me to Texas motor speedway to watch a nascar race. It was very loud but fun. I selfishly had wished then that the track had been a little smaller though so more wrecks happened. XD

what book are you currently reading?

I'm finally getting around to reading through all the riordanverse books (after dropping them when I was like, 10 & read on wikipedia that percy and annabeth kissed and I (unknowing baby lesbian) was like ew. romance. not reading that. which is hysterically funny to me now) & rn I am a couple chapters into the lost hero

also I'm technically still in the middle of an iliad reread (if you're seeing a greek myth theme then no you're not <3). and also teeechnically in the middle of war and peace but it's been ages since I read any.

what’s your favorite movie you saw in theaters this year?

haven't seen anything in cinemas this year but I am going to see barbie on sunday. I hope it's bonkers.

see I'm living out of a suitcase rn and also mostly dressing in a work uniform (I am consistently wearing trousers for the first time in about 8 years. very cursed.) so outside of work clothes I'm kinda back to wearing dresses? which is ok. it's not giving me the bad gender vibes I was getting a couple months back. hopefully soon I'll be back to my fav combo of kilt + button-up shirt + waistcoat tho

if you are not one of my dr who mutuals then you may not know (or you may have guessed from my vagueposting fdksjhgfd) that the stuff I love to write most is like,,, fic that's more about my historical interests than actual dr who HGKFDJ. & sure enough when I looked at what I'd done this year, all the stuff I liked best was historical fic. tossed up between a couple of them but I've got to give it to should i have bent, been reshaped

“Were ye ever proud of me?” he asked softly. “In the war? I used tae wonder that, after I’d lost ye.” Moisture was beading at the tip of his nose, and he drew the back of his hand across it, snuffling away the tears that still refused to fall. “Sometimes it felt like the only thought I ever had, when I was pipin’ in your place. If ye were watchin’, and if ye were proud of me. I thought maybe you’d come back an’ tell me so.” A bitter smile curled itself over his mouth. “But ye never did, did ye?” One hand stretched out, tracing over the lettering on the gravestone. His head was still bowed too low to see them, but he knew the words by heart. Dòmhnall Uilleam MacCruimein. “Ye never came back. An’ ye never, ever told me ye were proud.”

this was sooo much fun to write oh my god. it was mostly based around the title, bc as soon as I heard that song I was like. that's a jamie song. no I don't care it's from a video game and about a totally different character, it's about jamie's relationship with his father.

and I'm just so nuts about jamie's relationship with his family and his father in particular, the way it bounces off his queerness and relationship with his gender, etc etc etc. it's a very hyperspecific and niche fic but that's what gives me the most joy so <3

what is something that you’d like to create content for?

hmm idk!! nothing new, really. I'm very much wedded to two-era dr who in terms of writing. I'd like to make more holding achilles gifsets I think

life is really kicking my brain cell rn so not a whole lot but @ettelwenailinon talking about stuff to do with jacobitism/the '45 is driving me down the rabbithole again too & that is DEFINITELY coming out in the fic ideas I'm bouncing around ghfjkds

the first thing that jumped into my mind was the sun and the star. not gonna explain that one I'm just gonna say that I could fix her but also it makes me want to kill

"Wha-- Mona c'mon!" He's certainly been picking up the signs on this matter. Their travels within this World of Teyvat being unlike any he's even seen, full with wonder, vivacious with adventure.

Yet, even with all the wonders, there's one particular matter he's noticing that she draws the most adorable looking pout.

Hands raised in a sense of promoting ease to the astrologist, Sora wasn't going to hesitate in nailing this matter in the bud.

"Y'sureeee we can't head up the path a lil longer? The map talked about an Inn being up ahead." That said, distance for his perception and her's was vastly different he's come to learn.

"Wouldn't a pipin' hot serving of Golden Crab be nice with a comfortable place to settle? Or would you rather I make with the kitchen magic now?" He may have spoiled her a little bit.

ffxiv the loches to the end of 4.0

exploring the loches and fates its clear that ala mhigo has a very strong history of monarchy, stronger than what is shown for doma. a parallel is that both doma and ala mhigo are nationalistic and seek independence from garlemand, and they are both nations that are historically monarchies. doma rallies around the idea of a king, the king as a representation of a nation, and after a period without a monarch seeks to reinstate the monarchy. ala mhigo is also kingless but seems to be moving away from the idea of a king.

damn this man has been hiding out in the salt monastery, get him some food and water.

thanks for the convenient plot device to beat fordola urianger. i haven't seen you all expansion. speaking of people who haven't shown up what are the acsians up to didn't see them much in 3.0 either. ffxiv has had a long standing problem of juggling multiple plots the main ones set up in arr are the ascians light vs dark and the garleans global polimilitary conflict.

the salt lake is giant, it takes half the horizontal surface area of the map and there's an entire city down here

there's no way the player character knows how to operate garlean technology. this is sora at the computer.

the ala mhigan quarter has so many alleys. this map is useless. why does gyr abania have the special ishgardian black chocobos?

and now after 9 levels omega is back. uriange using us in his double blind experiments.

I think the writers forgot that limsa lomisa is a lalafellin name because they seem to be under the impression that its a seawolf city.

oooh they added yelling intot he background noises. nice touch

hien really did fly across a continent. ah on yolback. i was wondering why they didn't run into the same problems we faced going to doma in that moving an army across imperial controlled waters is going to spark a war. but if he only brought a few people that makes more sense. although i dont see any of the mol or xaela. when did yugiri get a yol. the doman forces might have been more effective drawing garleans forces to doma and away from ala mhigo. that door, it would have been so much easier just to unlock it but that would also have been much harder and riskier.

the story is obviously not going that way its just not how its written but raubahn could have been the new ala mhigo leader. conrad says that he wanted someone who has lived outside of garlean occupation and was more widely traveled than himself and raubhn fits the bill. politically speaking lyse is the family of two famous revolutionaries but raubahn is even more famous as the bull of ala mhigo and general of the immortal flames. he also has the proven battle and leadership record that lyse lacks. additionally here in the battle for ala mhigo he's made pipin lead general and is fighting not as a general but just as a soldier so he is willing to give up command and the flames would be fine without him. but on a personal level i see why it makes sense in character for him not to. now that illberd is dead his strongest ties are in ul'dah with nanamo and pipin. most importantly is that 4.0 isn't raubahn's story, its lyse's. She's the main character here and most things are written in service of her character arc instead of what would actually make sense.

I've said it earlier but I do really like how 4.0 centers the stories of women. I didn't even realized how bereft heavenward was of lead female characters until I got to 4.0 and it was the lyse, yugiri, and alisae show. basically until hien gets introduced on the azim steppe, lyse, yugiri, and alisae are the ones driving the plot they're the main characters and I do like that.

duty support for ala mhigo is interesting. you got tank arenvald, dps raubahn and lyse, and healer alphinaud so you cannot have everyone at once. of the 4 alphinaud is the least plot relavent but i refuse to play healer. not after it took me 5 attempts to clear battem's mettle. I may run this a couple times to see what dialogue I get.

my ilevel is so low i shoule not have run this as tank. wow the the dungeon end scene's really evolved used to be final fantasy victory music and then the pc jump excitedly and now its just a camera pan

jp zenos voice actor is doing a job. zenos usually sound soooo bored and now he's excited and deranged. did zenos just compare the wol to the primal he's trapped in a cage, illberd's primal.

localizations this time round have been pretty good. but i noticed this line is a bit different, i wasn't listening too closely but it was something like "I've never had so much fun".

zenos seems lonely. desperate for a connection and not accustomed to having one. also lol got him monologue-ing. he offers the hand of friend and wants to be rejected what a messed up little man. zenos has never had a friend. reminds me of those chronically online people with no friends but who are desperately lonely and they're doing these mental gymnastics and justifications for nothing. damn zenos is projecting HARD onto the player character. like pc is just standing there while zenos rants about how they must be the same.

wait wait did zenos just call the wol yuuitsu tomo like his one and only friend or the only friend for him. bruh you've never even had a full conversation with this person. ok wow a lot of lines are different I'm going to have to go look up the japanese version later.

zenos fused with a primal. how does that even work? probably more aether bs.

wow the game forces a sunset for this part of the game

seriously, last duty of 4.0 and not a single ascian this entire patch. devs really did give up on explaining why every boss fight is now on a platform in the void

see he's showing blood that's how you know he's scripted to die. suicide? edgy.

THE FUCKING EYES ARE STILL THERE. and now the ascians show up after not seeing them since 3.x. what has y'shtola been doing since she was injured? uuuuuuugggg zenos said he used omega's power to trap shinryuu... so where's omega? the cidnero divorce saga continues! they were business associates

empires, occupation, communities diaspora

lyse is the main character. foil is hien. both monarchies kingship symbol of what doma lost.

zenos is under utilized his most interesting part is his final scene. but he also had to kill himself there because now that he has reached the meaning of his existence there was nothing left but the void again. miserable pathetic loser. having an existential crisis faced with the reality that his life his empty he continues to seek the only thing that can make him feel anything, the innate fear of death when he is on the brink of it.

He’d fallen into a funk after Ul’dah, and it wasn’t hard for her to tell why. He always grew grumpy after seeing one of the impromptu family reunions that inevitably occurred when the leaders of Ala Mhigo and Ul’dah came together. Seeing Raubahn and Pipin together always sparked a storm of jealousy in his breast, and nothing she could say or do seemed to ever jolly him out of it. Out of ideas, out of patience, she left him in their room in the Annex for a moonlit stroll along the cliffs.

It wasn’t that she didn’t understand, or sympathize. She knew that a great deal of his grumpiness stemmed from guilt - guilt that he had never quite been the father to his daughters that Raubahn was to his son. But it wasn’t as if there was a way to fix it. She couldn’t turn back time - she couldn’t bring back Minfilia. She couldn’t open the way to Ryne - not yet. They were trying to find a way across the shards, but right now, the idea was simply a wistful dream.

She stared up at the moon shining down from above. A dream…

Biting her lip, she closed her eyes and cast her Teleport spell, spanning the Rift between this world and the next to draw herself to an Aetheryte in a distant home

It was the sun in his eyes that woke him, and he groaned, rolling over and dragging the pillow over his face. He couldn’t remember the last time he hadn’t risen with the sun, or before it, and yet given the position of the windows relative to the sun, it had to be nearly noon.

A chuckle nearby alerted him that he was not alone, and he flung the pillow to the side, rolling over to see her perched on a stool, nibbling on a roll. “Why are you there and not here?” he asked.

Lavender-edged eyes smiled. “You were very tired,” she replied. “I was there, but you know I can only laze abed so long. I’ve been up for hours.”

He sat up, ignoring her soft sound of delight as the blankets spilled away. “I was… dreaming. The First. Lakeland, and trees the color of your eyes.” His citrine eyes were distant as he gazed into his memories. “Ryne was telling me… of Eden. Of Gaia. Of a festival?” He shook his head, disconcerted. “It felt so real.”

She rose from her stool, placing aside her half-eaten roll, and crossed to the bed, sliding down to sit beside him. He leaned over to absently kiss her, still distracted by the memory of his dream. “How is your daughter, Thancred?” she asked.

He frowned at her, then his eyes sharpened. “It felt so real,” he repeated, and her smile bloomed bright. “What did you do?”

Reaching up, she touched his cheek, then leaned up to brush her lips across his. “I bargained for a gift, my love,” she murmured.

His fingers closed about her wrist. “A gift?”

Her eyes shone up at him, and he found himself smiling in response. “A gift of time, for you. For her. To be a family.”

Though his eyes filled, they did not overflow; his control was too great for that, even with her. But as he leaned forward and laid his forehead against hers, she could feel the storm within him settle, the last remnants of his jealousy slipping away. “Then next time,” he said gently, “I expect you to be there.” At her inquiring sound, he slid an arm around her, holding her close. “If the gift is time with family, then I would have all of my family there.”

“Oh,” she whispered. “Thancred…”

“All of my family,” he repeated, and held her close.
