Hey Plover Fans! Harwich Port, MA, Summer 2023
I took this very silly Plover (Tern!) footage while on break from doing some video work for WE CAN (Women’s Empowerment through Cape Area Networking). I support what they’re doing, obviously, but I found these Piping Plovers (Terns!) way more interesting than whatever was going on at the fundraiser.
I want all of Cape Cod’s wildlife to thrive despite the polluters’ best efforts to the contrary. Also, I’m no bird expert, so I’d feel really stupid if these weren’t actually Piping Plovers in the video. (They're Terns apparently! AGH)

"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the conviction of the person(s) responsible for the vandalism of two piping plover nests in Far Rockaway, New York. The piping plover is protected as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). Maximum penalties under the ESA are a fine of $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to six months for the take of each egg or individual bird. Between 10:30 a.m. on Friday June 9, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, two nest exclosures — structures that are placed around individual shorebird nests to keep predators out — were intentionally damaged and two eggs were taken from each of the nests within. Earlier this year, New York City Parks Department installed game cameras on the beach to monitor activity around nesting areas and officials are reviewing the footage for information. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Service Special Agent Kathryn McCabe at 516-825-3950, or 1-844-FWS-TIPS (397-8477)."

Piping Plovers
Despite traveling hundreds of miles between wintering and breeding sites, many Piping Plovers return to the same sites to breed and to spend the winter. Individuals that return to breed with the same mate often nest within 128 feet of the previous nest site. Birds breeding in the Great Lakes spend the winter in South Carolina and Georgia, whereas most birds from eastern Canada head to North Carolina for the winter.

Some piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) and American searocket (Cakile edentula), a native annual that provides the birds with shade, protection from the wind, and attracts a smorgasbord of insects for them to eat.

DUMBASS DUO SHOWDOWN ROUND 2 BATTLE 15
Nancy & Gotawsi the Ontario pipping plovers (Birbs from Canada) vs Barbie & Ken (barbie: life in a dreamhouse)
BTW CHECK OUT THE PROPAGANDA UNDER THE POLL
Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA
BIRBS
Did you know that it was possible for birds to have DRAMA?! Yeah. Meet gotawsi. He’s one of the breeding birds in Ontario’s very small piping plover population. First, he would not stop making nests everywhere. Then he nested in a terrible spot. AND THEN he cheated on his partner!!! He was so confused for three weeks. He did not know who is partner was. He did not know what he was doing. He mated with his wife/grandma. He is own grandpa. He doesn’t even know. He’s the worlds most anxious father. NANCY on the other hand. She would often leave gotawsi to do his own thing. This species is so endangered that we can’t afford to have dumbasses but THESE TWO made for the most dramatic breeding season yet. She would leave gotawsi alone for hours while she ate bugs. She hung out out in parking lots. There are less than 15 of these things in the entire province and she’s out here PLAYING IN TRAFFIC. She’s so crazy. There were 3 nests in Ontario this year and theirs was so late because they couldn’t get their shit together.

Animal of the Day!
Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Near Threatened
Habitat- North American Atlantic Coast; Gulf of Mexico Coast
Size (Weight/Length)- 63 g; 18 cm; 38 cm wingspan
Diet- Insects; Mollusks; Crustaceans
Cool Facts- A common sight on eastern North American coastlines, the piping plover is a bundle of fluff on legs. Running surprisingly fast, these plovers have learned how to track the tides. When the tide goes down, the plovers move in. Digging through the sand with their short beaks, they flick out mollusks and crack them open with ease. Males perform courtship ceremonies every March, diving towards the sand dunes and swerving up at the last minute. Females create nests out of grasses, shells, and sand in sand banks so that the nest is as camouflaged as possible. Both parents aid in raising the chick, the chick’s coloration allowing it to look like a pile of sand to aerial predators.
Rating- 13/10 (Conservationists are hard at work to protect their sand dunes.)

Searocket, a federally endangered Great Lakes piping plover fledgling, and a semipalmated sandpiper friend. They hung out for a bit feeding in this area, flew off when a kildeer came after them, and we found them a bit further apart on the side with the gulls (access is more cut off, so I haven't got good photos from there).
To my knowledge, none of the fledglings reared at Montrose Beach have turned up again so we don't know if Searocket is male or female. But it also got its leg tangled in some fishing net and flew off before the volunteers could remove said net, so unclear how far it even went on its first long flight :/ it's cool that such a busy area is also fantastic for birds, but humans gonna human.
