Redeye piranha!
Tumblr media
Also known as a black piranha or a white piranha (confusing, I know). It can exert bite force 30 times its own body weight, the most out of any vertebrate!

Wimple Piranha (Catoprion mento)
Family: Serrasalmid Family (Serrasalmidae)
IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
A tiny (15cm/5.9 inches in length) relative of the more famous Red-Bellied Piranha, the Wimple Piranha is found in the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay and Essequibo river basins, and is notable for its unusual diet; adults of this species feed almost exclusively on fish scales, feeding by ramming into larger fish at high speeds with their mouths wide open, biting and generating suction to dislodge their target’s scales and pull them into their mouths. The practice of eating scales, known as lepidophagy, is rare in animals as scales are difficult to digest and require considerable amounts of energy to obtain, and it is likely that it developed in response to the intense competition between fish species in the biodiverse rivers to which Wimple Piranhas are native - although their nutrients-poor diet limits their size, feeding exclusively on scales (occasionally supplemented by small insects or small amounts of the meat of their otherwise unharmed targets where possible) allows Wimple Piranhas to find food while largely avoiding competing with larger and less specialised carnivores. Besides their unusual feeding habits little is known about the biology of wild Wimple Piranhas, although through the observation of captive individuals it has been found that unlike many piranha species they are solitary (possibly avoiding living in groups to avoid competing with other members of their species,) and that like other members of their family females of this species lay eggs.

(Hopefully you're all thinking 'that's not a shark!' but I thought I'd switch it up and talk about another fish I'm a fan of. I might even try and mix in some other fish trivia too here and there...)
Piranhas, much like sharks, have a pretty bad reputation. Most people likely picture an unsuspecting animal setting foot in 'piranha-infested' waters (although much like 'shark-infested' waters, that makes no sense because that water is just...where they live) and being descended upon by a swarm of piranhas ripping them apart until there's nothing left but bone. But let's break that down.
For starters, most piranhas aren't even carnivores but, in fact, omnivores, mixing in fruit, seeds and other plant matter into their diet (even the well-known red-bellied piranha pictured above is an omnivore). Additionally, Tometes camunani is a fully herbivorous piranha and mostly eats fallen fruit from trees.
Even on the carnivorous side of their diet, piranhas tend to be scavengers, feeding on dead animals which can serve a vital role in preventing the spread of disease through populations and overall keeping the water clean.
Additionally, you're not likely to be swarmed by them either. While some species of piranha live in groups, this is primarily for protection and piranhas tend to hunt solo. The group feeding frenzies commonly associated with piranhas are rare, usually caused by starvation.
It's important to remember that piranhas are just regular fish which happen to have sharp teeth. Most piranhas are actually quite skittish animals and certainly won't attack something many times its size like you or me and risk injury or death if we fight back or decide to make a meal out of them instead (especially if there are much easier snacks like insects or fruit around).
So rest easy knowing that you don't have to worry about being torn apart by a swarm of bloodthirsty fish the second you step in their territory and take the time to learn more about them if you're interested :)

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Though they have a bloodthirsty reputation, pirannahs are hardly blood-thirsty. In fact, most of their diet is a combination of crustaceans, insects, small fish, scavenged leftovers, and tiny bites off the scales and fins of larger fish.

That time in 1913 when Brazilians pranked Teddy Roosevelt into thinking that piranhas were death machines that patrolled the rivers just waiting for something to fall in so they could tear it to shreds and then piranhas are STILL banned in the us like more than a hundred years later.
Plus people still believe piranhas are swarm hunters that just eat anything that moves when they're like scavengers that mostly eat dead things.
Rarely attack humans.

Poseidon idea of a Pet
Poseidon giving his baby boy Percy a pet after this Luke and Pit Scorpion fiasco. Poseidon gave Percy this.
Poseidon:" When you are a danger they will help and save you." (in other words they will kill what ever hurt you)
Just think of him fighting against a Monster/Demigod badly hurt suddenly out the little water around them suddenly the Piranhas are pulled a little in to the water and starts screaming as the wate started to turn red.
He has like 100 of them as he knows they like to life in a Swarm.

Daily fish fact #322
Red-bellied piranha!
Tumblr media
They can communicate through various sounds with each other! They make these sounds by contracting muscles around their swim bladder rapidly. They've been found to make harmonic, low frequency sounds when doing frontal displays or fighting for food, and higher frequency pulses when chasing one specific individual piranha. They can also make a low drumming sound when taken out of water!
