There’s also the fact that Japan seems to associate eels with pots, as seen with this youkai from Yo-kai Watch: https://yokaiwatch.fandom.com/wiki/Croonger
I’m not sure why, though, and at present I’m having difficulty finding anything about it (thanks, Google). I think I remember something about it being used to trap them? It would be similar to the current method used: https://web-japan.org/nipponia/nipponia21/en/feature/feature04.html
…But, now all I can reference to are these wicker traps from the Edo era :( http://www.unasige.com/unagizatugaku-tennen-gyohou.html

Pokemon Fun Facts!
So, everyone knows the Turtwig line are photosynthesising herbivores, right?
That is, their diet requires photosynthesis and the intake of plant material such as leaves and berries. Both of these are essential for their wellbeing, and neither can be restricted or replaced without causing health problems.
But you might be interested to know that there absolutely are cases where the Turtwig line- especially Grotle and Torterra- have been known to consume smaller mammalian and reptilian Pokemon, both live and as carrion! Many of these are in situations where resources were in short supply and the Pokemon was trying to access the required nutrients any way it could, but occasionally it appears to be more or less because they felt like it, or had developed a habit that carried through to better times, or were simply curious!Generally speaking, though, you don’t have to worry about a trained and properly fed Torterra doing such a thing, and it’s easy to discourage should they try it. What might be harder to discourage is their ability to consume poisonous or otherwise toxic plant matter! Despite not being Poison type, fully evolved Torterra can eat almost any vegetation, including things that would be deadly to their pre-evolutions, and should they decide they like the taste they certainly will. Doing this on a regular basis does, however, cause their skin and tree to secrete toxins, and is not recommended unless you’re doing it on purpose! Why would you do it on purpose? Well, it helps to reduce the damage taken by Poison-type moves in battle, and adds a poison aspect to their Grass-type attacks, so can be very helpful for a battling Pokemon- so long as you don’t mind not being able to hug them without protective equipment!

[Image Description: A man resembling the Pokemon Victreebel. He has light skin and green and light brown hair in an undercut and ponytail style with the end of the ponytail being blonde. He is wearing a light green jacket, a yellow shirt with a pink collar and green tear drop designs near the bottom, light brown pants, and a yellow drawstring backpack with a pink opening and light brown drawstrings. He is smiling happily as he holds onto two large vines covered in yellow flowers with brown centers. The background behind him consists of two mounds of dirt and green colors hanging down as though to suggest more foliage. End ID.]

What are your favourite dragon quest monsters across the entire series?
The first Dragon Quest Monsters game I've ever gotten to play wound up being the first one to leave out exactly the top three I looked forward to getting:
Tumblr media
GIANTSLUG/MAULUSC: I'm pickier about slug and snail creatures than you maybe expect but I love the vapid drippy zombie face of the DQ slug. It perfectly captures the appeal of a slug as a monster, a mindless gooey thing that will just eat you without a care. And its classic color scheme is that of a Banana Slug!!
Tumblr media
BELZEBUB: I am also picky about fly creatures; usually I want them to have the proboscis present in some way, and the correct number of wings (two). There's something I still love about the toothy mouth of Belzebub however, maybe the way it curls up between the eyes? It just does a good job capturing the feel of a fly's personality I guess.
Tumblr media
DARKEYE/EYELASHER: eye creatures can also very easily feel a bit boring to me because I've just seen so, so many of them, but DQ's basic killer eyeball appeals to me a lot with its irregular fungus-like collection of tentacles. The little root branches on "top" are especially cool to me, and sometimes they're the bottom, because they represent where the eyeball attaches to either floors or ceilings! In a few games, they're even encountered as parasites inside bigger monsters!
I used to admire the guidebook to the first two DQ Monsters games as a kid but never had the games themselves, and never got around to any other DQ titles. I just spent my whole life waiting for just the right one where I'd finally get to assemble my three favorites, then finally this new one comes out and has to be the first time these three took a vacation :( But, Dark Prince was at least nice enough to include exactly my next three favorites in the franchise. I went over them already in my DQM Dark Prince post but some people will see this post first so I will have to reintroduce them:
Tumblr media
DROHL: droopy flappy membranous mollusk guys, honestly horrible looking in a great way. In 3d games it turns out their helmetlike head spirals in the back like a snail shell! Apparently they're meant to be troll-like beings.
Tumblr media
LUNATICK: just a blue fleshy sac thing with gooey antennae, a bunch of tentacles (most of them segmented like worms!) and a little eyeball, perfect, no criticisms, also reminds me of what Berserk considers an "Incubus:"
Tumblr media
(Don't worry, Berserk Incubus aren't sex monsters but monsters that give you nightmares and feed on the fear)
Tumblr media
TAILEATER/MAD MOLLUSK: I love how pathetic their front face looks, and the whole shape is so pleasantly reminiscent of an abyssal sea cucumber of some kind.
Tumblr media
SKULLROO/GUAARDVARK: I didn't even realize this was one of my top favorites until getting it in Dark Prince. It's an unpleasant wrinkly fat aardvark kangaroo thing that just always carries a human skull around. Its profile says they collect them and the one they carry is their favorite! A lot of slightly lower favorites were also left out however, none of these are in Dark Prince but are very high up there to me:
Tumblr media
PYURO: what is this thing? I don't know! Different games have categorized it as an insect or a plant. It's a furball with five eyes encircling a butterfly proboscis, two little legs and a big huge ring of flower petals behind it. Very xenobiology.
Tumblr media
TONGUELLA: it's kinda like a dumpy, hairless sloth with an aardvark tail with a mushed-in dog face and a giant gross tongue. I guess I just like foul moist beasts. I wish this was a real mammal we had in the world, I bet it'd smell terrible. Feels like a perfect counterpart to Guaardvark.
Tumblr media
SLURPERON: it's one tiny pitcher plant with a giant tongue and then it has cool reptilian eyes at the bottom end. So simple and so rad! A fun way to stylize a pitcher plant monster without ripping off Victreebel.
Tumblr media
SICKLER: is a little tiny mantis in a robe, like the Tonberry from Final Fantasy but a mantis
Tumblr media
RAGIN' CONTAGION: a newer one, a gooey vaporous cyclops ghost that represents disease. In its first appearance as a boss in the series the English localizers decided it should talk like Yosemite Sam. Sure why not!
So I like the new game and it gave me some new favorites like Skellyfish and new appreciation for some others, but oddly it only has my very middle all-time faves

(@justalileepguy) Do you have any Lileep facts? It... it might be nice to learn a little more about my new biology to be honest.
Of course! I'd be happy to help.
Lileep Facts
Tumblr media
(Art by introvernacho on Twitter)
-The scientific name for Lileep is "Actinocrinites crinus" which roughly translates to "tentacle-rated lily"
-Lileep are fossil pokemon that became extinct around a hundred million years ago. The first Lileep fossil was found in Hoenn, but fossils of them have been found all over tropical oceans
-Lileep lived 300 million years before Tyranitar and became extinct around 100 million years ago
-While many people seem to think that Lileep are more closely related to Frillish and Jellicent, they're actually more closely related to Mareanie, Toxapex, Staryu, and Starmie
-Resurrecting Lileep and releasing them is actually highly discouraged, as the ocean are not what they were like 300 million years ago, and they often die after a couple of weeks (be careful, Anon)
-The average life span for a Lileep is 35 years (might be different for you, Anon, since you were a human first)
-Lileep can regenerate limbs very quickly
-When Lileep were first resurrected, vases designed to look like them were very popular
-Lileep's eyes are actually the yellow dots above its head. The false eyes on its body are thought to be a decoy to make hunting easier
Tumblr media
-When they were alive, Lileep were some of the most common pokemon to love in warm oceans. Fossils have been found of them for many, many years. It was only until recently when we had the technology to revive them that we managed to get an accurate image of what they looked like
-Lileep are/were pod animals, and many fossils of them were found close together. They also tend to get lonely easily if not around other pokemon
-Lileep eat the small fish that swim past them, swallowing them whole
-In the wild, Lileep will attach themselves to rocks and only detach themselves when they evolve
-The only way to tell the difference between a male and female Lileep I'd through a blood test, ad they have no visible gender differences and their reproductive organs look the same
-Ik a lot of people think they might eat by putting acid on their prey and digesting it like Starmie, but luckily, they don't do that. They eat closer to Victreebel/pitcher plants
-The standard breed cannot breathe in freshwater
-Despite being grass types, Lileep don't have much of the biology that other grass types have. It's thought that when they were alive, they were water/grass types

Review for my good boys the bellsprout line?
Tumblr media
Bellsprout has gotta be one of the silliest Pokemon out there in terms of movement, second only to Toedscool. Look at this ridiculous thing with its skinny little root legs and dot eyes. How can you not enjoy it?
Tumblr media
Also, pitcher plants are always cool, and giving it a "body" made of the roots and stem is fun and something that weirdly isn't done a whole lot with grass-types. The colors are also pretty nice, with a good mix of complementary yellows, greens, and browns, with a pink rim to boot (similar to actual pitcher plants, though they usually have a red gradient as well). It's super simple, but really enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Weepinbell starts to edge a bit close to the "even blend middle evolution with no unique traits" trope, but it avoids it mostly by lacking the body of Bellsprout, but being oriented upside-down compared to Victreebel. What also helps it is it's absolutely silly googly eyes, which combined with the always-open "mouth" give it the impression of constant shock. I also like the addition of the green dots, which help break up the yellow areas a bit without being overly intrusive. Nothing too crazy, but it works.
Tumblr media
Victreebel is probably my favorite of the line. I really like the change to slit-like pupils and the eyes being directly under the rim, and the way said rim now sports a pair of fangs for good measure. The eyes taking up less space means there's more room for green dots, and the leaves and body shape are really nice and have a better flow to them than Weepinbell's.
I also like the long stem in the back, which kind of mimics the bottom of a tropical pitcher plant without literally having it in the same place. Likewise, the leaf at the top is interesting, as it kind of works to pull in food in place of it not actually having any hands. Just a very balanced design all around.
Tumblr media
As a quick note, the line was supposed to get a split evo ala Bellossom in Gen 2. There's actually a subtle baseball theme to this guy, because it's name (Tsubomitto) references catchers mitts, and its legs look a bit like baseball pants. Get it? Like the opposite of a pitcher is a catcher? Anyway, it's kind of fun, but it just looks a bit too similar to Bellsprout in overall body shape to really feel like it would've added anything to the line.
(Also, side note 2: these guys don't need anything too badly, but given that pitcher plants are normally extremely red in color, I think it would be fun to have a fire/grass regional that spits oil instead of acid. Bellsprout's legs could look like little fuses!)
Tumblr media
Anyway, overall, a simple but pretty fun line with some neat looking plant monsters.

What the heck IS Weepinbell??
The bellsprout line is kind of hilarious because you start with this skinny wriggly boy, then SCREAMING FLYING BANANA and then finally... a normal pitcher plant but with eyes.
It maintains cohesive design elements throughout the line - the bulb shape, the rim around the mouth, and the leaves, which makes it... nominally identifiable as a continuous evolution, I guess, but where Bellsprout and Victreebel do kinda look like actual plants, Weepinbell looks like a Q-Bert enemy, its giant staring eyes are just... hilariously bizarre as a middle stage between its other forms.
That said, I really like the idea of a pitcher plant as a Pokémon, Victreebel looks genuinely kind of sinister, and the idea of a carnivorous plant that can *actively* hunt you is a good idea for a monster. And it really doesn't take any more than giving it eyes and a couple of sharp fangs to impart it with a sense of predatory intelligence.
Bellsprout is adorable and Victreebel is scary... but Weepinbel remains a bit of a joke.

Sorry if this has been asked before but, what if gankndorf and sheik had pokemons? Team ideas? Types they would like? A single favorite pokemon each could have? :3
hmmm honestly idk as much about pokemon as i probably should these days but i feel like ganon would have some mix of dark/ghost/lightning/fire/poison types, and sheik would maybe favor fighting/fairy/flying/ice/water types?? ganondorf would definitely at least have a Victreebel bc he would love having a big sentient pitcher plant, and i feel like sheik would have a Hitmonlee?? and i also cant seem to picture her without a Porygon for some reason lol

Pokémon teams for my two Rain Code OCs! Sticking with the gym leader rule of an overall type since combing through every single Pokémon to find the most fitting would take ages. I granted myself the right to kinda half-ass it in a reasonable way.
Tumblr media
Ringo's ace is Palafin, reflective of his reliance on companionship to succeed with their spontaneous schemes. Tatsugiri also aligns with their 'it takes two' attitude. Gastrodon for his preference to flee rather than fight (and being more active in rainy weather, go figure), Quagsire for his easy-going nature, Quaquaval for their ability to distract with flashy moves, and Floatzel for his desire to help those in need!
Tumblr media
Lieu's ace is a Dragalge, which is the natural predator of Finizen (the pre-evolution to Palafin) and can blend in with the environment, a skill taught to them by Aide. Glimmora and Victreebel go along with Lieu's signature of slowly killing their targets with poisons from plants, as Glimmora's design resembles nightshade and Victreebel is a pitcher plant that lures its prey with the scent of nectar. Toxapex for first attacking with slow-acting poison before using close-quarters combat, Arbok for intimidation tactics and tenacity, and Scolipede for brute strength in hand-to-hand fights.

I based it on how pitcher plants glow blue under UV light. :3
