Garcy + secrets

Usual canon-divergent ‘verse, PG-ish, also on ao3.

There are three things that Garcia Flynn will take to a grave that he supposes will not qualify as early anymore even if it is inevitably in the near future.

One, that he is incapable of true regret.

Two, that he does not believe in second chances or redemption as such concepts would apply to his own existence.

And three, that his heart is not as cold and locked as those around him may believe.

It’s this last issue that makes him question the other two, a year into a strange horror of an unearned life and dynamics that almost feel like a family. The mission keeps evolving and maybe it never ends but no one’s dead yet, and these are his people now, this is as close to a home as he’s likely to ever have again and he-

The second-chance of it all manifests itself in the form of a small woman a decade younger than him, currently perched on his bed in what has to be both the most uncomfortable and least seductive position he’s ever seen. In the year or so since she’s at least figured out that he doesn’t mind her presence – he dares not assume anything, the idea that she may actually do more than tolerate him is still terrifying – he’s walked into a lot. It’s like having a cat, he supposes, except sometimes she’s randomly in a state of undress and other times she’s crying and-

At least today she’s just tangled her body in a bizarre knot, which is somehow normal even if at least one of her limbs is in a position he cannot describe for the life of him. At least she’s in her normal off-day uniform of leggings and one of his sweaters and when did she start borrowing those and when did he decide never to say anything about it. At least this all feels almost like life.

She turns her head as she hears the door but otherwise makes no effort to untangle herself from whatever weird stretch she’s doing, which… again, normal. They exist around each other; he did not at any point agree to having a roommate, but while she still nominally has her own space down the hallway, that’s about what it’s turned into. She sleeps on the chair unless it’s one of the days with the crying, and maybe that explains her current state of contortion, and-

“Everything alright?” he asks, because he has to ask, because she’s usually not in here at midday unless something isn’t and-

“Wanted quiet. I don’t feel like refereeing a fight about future technology.”

He nods – he’d come up here for about the same reasons, that one issue within the only stable romantic relationship on the team having reached an unusual volume today. There are things one does not deal with voluntarily; that is several of them at once.

“They’ll calm down,” he murmurs. He understands volatile dynamics well enough. Rufus and Jiya usually aren’t, even if their respective points of reference are the equivalent of an interfaith marriage, and they’ll be alright, this is what boredom does to people, this is-

“Still easier to be two floors away from it,” Lucy counters, beginning the process of untangling herself.

Like a cat, Flynn thinks as he watches from the distance of the doorframe. She is more delicate than he will ever directly say, and getting out of whatever the hell that position was takes some maneuvering and yet somehow it all looks effortless. He wonders how much he is allowed to say, if it would be too far to make a comment about how oddly adorable she is sometimes, and he is not used to keeping so many things within himself and he-

Someday, he decides. In the unlikely event that they both survive whatever ending the next few years bring. In the even more unlikely event that she still wants anything to do with him. No reason to risk a new volatile dynamic when where they are now is enough.

Still, he murmurs an endearment in his native language as he sits down at the far end of the bed and reaches for the book he was reading earlier, and in these small moments he can at least hope.

I would LOVE to hear about what characters in fe3h annoy you particularly for Undeveloped Characterization reasons...

Okay okay so I have to apologize for how horribly long (months!) that I’ve been sitting on this ask but at the time I couldn’t formulate an answer that seemed fair. 

Like, I super don’t like Lorenz, but I’m willing to suspend my dislike until I finish my GD playthrough and see for myself if he has any redeeming qualities. I am frustrated by the lost potential of Catherine’s character, but I think it’s unfair to expect a lot of character development for non-students. 

But it’s clear that I have one winner for the Most Disappointing Lack of Development category, and that’s Ingrid. 

Just. I hate everything about how Ingrid is written. I hate how poorly handled her supports with Dedue are, I hate how she’s on one hand picking up after the boys and on the other hand completely alienated from the other girls, I hate how she shoots down Dorothea’s advances so harshly while tolerating worse from Sylvain, I hate how it never feels like she ever truly becomes secure in who she is and how she has a longer support chain with Seteth than she does with the only other female knight in the game. 

I think it’s been long enough since I played AM that I can finally divorce the character from the awful writing enough to appreciate fan content of her now. And I don’t think she’s meant to be as off-putting as I find her, but it’s just so, so clear that she was written by conservative dudes who don’t know how to reconcile their desire to have a female knight with their desire to make her a super feminine waifu.

So yeah, in terms of undeveloped characters, I think Ingrid is at the top. I started out with such high hopes for her, and the writers somehow managed to undermine her every step of the way.

Please can you describe outer wilds to me in terms of plot/gameplay/whatever? Is it a horror game or is it just terrifying to you personally? I could look it up but I am certain your explanation will be better

I’ll do the best I can to explain the game. Basically everyone will tell you that it’s best to go into this game as blindly as possible, and I do agree with that, but also as someone who is very scared of a lot of the things the game involves, I found a little research after I started helped me out. (I also have truly no idea how far in I am. I suspect not very far in, but it’s a very opaque game that is entirely self-directed.) 

In short, it is not a horror game. However when I was googling “outer wilds very scary???” after a few hours playing, I found a bunch of people who basically said the exact same thing and agreed that the particular cosmic scope of the game and the alien nature of it can be very frightening. 

It is a game about exploration in space.  You play an astronaut on a small planet on their first voyage into your little galaxy. It does not have any gore, but you can die. (boy. you sure can die.) The graphics are cartoony and very pleasant aesthetically. If you get motion sickness easily in games, this one probably isn’t for you. 

In long, if you want the slightly more spoiler-y (but still vague)

you are in a time loop that ends when the sun explodes. You then wake up back where you started with the knowledge you have gained in your previous runs. Also your runs can end waaaaaaaay sooner than just the sun exploding because it’s ridiculously easy to die but flying into the sun or falling off a cliff or running out of air or a thousand other ways--I just got killed by something that I’m not even sure what happened. But it scared the shit out of me. I’m less scared of the game now but that’s largely because I’ve been avoiding the two main planets that scare the shit out of me. 

Basically in terms of fear, there’s the cosmic fear of the inescapable death via sun exploding. Then there’s the specific terrors of different planets. There’s a planet with massive weather events for example and I get really freaked out by the enormous water tornados you have to navigate around. Then there’s a plant planet that is MUCH larger on the inside and navigating into that infinite abyss of white void fills me with so much creeping dread. And then there’s a planet that has a black hole at the center. I’ll be real, the black hole doesn’t scare me too much any more because I’ve accidentally died because of it so many times. But BOY. That one freaked me out. 

The controls also add to it. You’re often weightless or navigating with less gravity so it’s really hard to control your trajectory. I’ve finally gotten semi-comfortable with the controls, but a big sense of the dread in the game is how out of control you feel of your own movements. You see something that you want to avoid but you have to rapidly figure out how to avoid it or if you even can. And that’s really hard because boy moving in zero-g is like. remember Newton’s laws? No you don’t. Oops you flew into the black hole again. 

Meanwhile, the aesthetics are so gentle and cartoony and soft, and the music is like bluegrass with sad piano interludes, and the story of the world (that I’ve found so far) is really really interesting. But the dread. Everywhere, the dread. 

If the idea of a game with almost no instructions and just exploration as a way to figure out the story and the world appeals to you, I’d recommend this game. If you have cosmic horror fears (you might not know you do! If I had not started playing this game, I would be incapable of understanding how freaked out it makes me) I’d say playing might be rough. And if you get motion sickness easily, I’d say this game might be unplayable. I’m enjoying it but also it gives me anxiety. Part of me wants to give up and just watch someone else play it. The rest of me is like “just one more time loop really quick tho”

I do. Lately I haven't been keeping up with it because real life has been...eventful...but I will eventually get back to it.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

This is a toss-up between Here Without You and Can You Hear Me Now (or Am I Lost)?, which are both ER Luka/Abby one-shots and canon-compliant, hence the angsty endings. I don't end on angst when I'm fully steering the ship, however much I might drag the characters through it beforehand. (Though how I avoided angsty-endings to any of my Garcy fics, I don't know. Probably pure spite.)

7. Do you write crossovers?

I never have. The closest I've come to doing it is a fusion rather than a true crossover.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No hate. One or two less than impressed reviews from readers who just weren't the right audience for the fic.

9. Do you write smut? If you do, what kind of smut do you write?

A leeeetle bit. I dip my toe in occasionally. So, mostly fade to black and non-explicit description.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge. (But let me know if you see one elsewhere!)

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yep! Amber and I with our currently-on-hiatus-but-we-WILL-finish-it-someday-DAMN-it We Part Only to Meet Again. I don't know that I could co-write with anyone else! But Amber and I think very similarly and are often mistaken for each other, so it works!

12. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

All-time favorite is such a hard question! I guess that would have to be one I haven't written for, because I feel like all my ships ever come back to it in some way: Anne and Gilbert from the AoGG series. I see them in pretty much any ship I've ever loved.

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

The first I ever published for was HP. I wrote some stuff that I never finished or posted for Bones and Gilmore Girls. And Nancy Drew, if we're going way, way, way back to when I was a kid and didn't even know fic or fandom existed.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Too hard, argh. (I am terrible at choosing favorites, if you couldn't tell.) Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably give different answers. But Q & A for Timeless because it was fueled by self-indulgence and spite but apparently that works for me because I love the end result. Also, Resting Murder Face because it was so fun to write that I cackled the entire time. For ER, it SO depends on my mood, but I am particularly proud of my WIP County General's Lonely Hearts Club because I love leaning into friendships the show never explored.

- Timeless, Emma centric, unfinished/paused, 685 words - This was an idea I had for SO LONG and I kneecapped by not starting it when I wanted to. That was two summers ago, when I was forcing myself to not fic and ONLY work on my novel, because I was taking a novel writing class and we had to produce ten pages a week. But I should've done it. - I just love the idea of Emma ending up with children that she thinks she's going to hate, cause Emma hates everyone, and ends up wildly protective of them and actually, like, caring about them?????? - I've talked about this endlessly with @aparticularbandit and @pixievixen <3

“We don’t have time for this right now, there are two little girls in a foster home in Daly City that are waiting for me.” “Have they ever even met you? Are you going to be any more familiar to them than a foster parent would be?” “They are my grandchildren,” Carol replies, not answering the questions. “I will not leave them in the care of somebody that I don’t trust.” “You still don’t have car seats!” Emma calls after her, as Carol starts the car. When she comes home, she’ll be bringing Emma’s two, tiny new housemates with her. Exquisite.

No good thing has ever come out of a mission in the Victorian era, Lucy is convinced.

Fine, being a petite woman is not an advantage at any point in history, she is well aware of this issue, but there is just something about the late 1800s in particular that ends in disaster for her. Maybe it’s the particular low point of fashion that era represents – corsets have their purposes, she can admit that and deal, but add in a skirt fitted enough that she can barely move and that there is a problem. She has to be restrained, and she is learning that she is not actually a restrained person, and she-

They are in New York, which is thoroughly unhelpful because there are literally thousands of things that could be about to get derailed, and the usual interplay of personalities means she gets to spend the next few days pretending to be married. This has become normal enough, and what had started as okay let’s just accept that assumption has turned into more of an intentional move. She’s safer this way, and in return she’s still about the only person who can even occasionally make Flynn understand the word no, and-

She wonders, sometimes, if this routine might be messing with his version of a healing process.

They’ve done this enough times under similar enough circumstances – there’s about a hundred year stretch where this works – to have a practiced and coherent cover story. Recent immigrant and his native-born wife whose family wildly disapproves of her life choices. All of that is true enough, though not the implications of it, not the idea that she might’ve been corrupted or-

There is a familiarity in the way her companion’s fingers tighten around hers, the unspoken protectiveness she gets in return for playing this role she does not want. A reminder, as they go on, that he has killed for her honor before and probably will do so again. They are tethers, they are so many things, they are-

“Are you alright?” she asks. They have a distance to clear, and they might as well talk, and she worries, and she-

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“You’ve introduced me as your wife… how many times so far today?”

“Four, maybe?”

“Isn’t that weird for you?”

Flynn glances away and she can almost feel him trying to find a tactful but evasive answer, and she hates how he won’t actually say what he means whenever she brings up the fact that they do have some kind of emotional bond even if it is years from becoming anything a less damaged person would describe as mutually romantic. There is something between them, dammit, there is something between them and-

“It works,” he says after a moment too long.

“I know I’m not whatever your wife was but-“

“That does not make you any less magnificent.”

“I don’t want-“

“I am not an open wound, Lucy. You do not need to worry about-“

“What if I want to worry about you?” she says just a little too quickly and oh god, she had never planned on admitting that but-

“It would make you even more unique than you already are.”

She is sure there are more things unsaid, but she has caused enough distraction as it is and she decides she’ll pick it up later. When they are home, where they belong, when she’s in comfortable clothes again and curled up in that awful thrift-store abomination of an armchair she practically lives in and-

She holds his hand just a little tighter, and the adoring looks she claims are an attempt at making them invisible are actually real, and at the very least no one is going to have questions about her fake marriage.
