He never thought this would actually happen. He thought she'd say something, or he'd say something. Or they'd do something. Or something else would happen, like the end of the world. He feels like an ass for thinking that he'd welcome it right about now.

He also has absolutely no idea what he's doing here, about to watch the woman he loves marry another man. And boy doesn't that hurt like hell?

It's a false sense of nobility that's brought him here, he's sure. And a stupid promise to always be there for her. He'd meant it, really. He hadn't meant to rip out his own heart doing it, but hey, he should've been more specific then. And a lot less cryptic, maybe. That damn nobility is the reason they ended up in this mess in the first place.

There aren't a lot of people, just the closest friends, friends, and family. It resembles something he imagined their wedding might be like, when he allowed himself to dream about their future. And now someone else will get to have it with her.

To be fair, at this point he's not entirely sure she even loves him. Of course the very fact that it's her wedding day should probably tell him all he needs to know about her feelings for her future husband. She wouldn’t marry someone she didn’t love. He wouldn’t want her to do it. But it still hurts.

It does hurt that she’s chosen someone else. Though he knows better than to make her shoulder all the blame. It always takes two after all.

The music starts playing and he reluctantly stands up. If he's standing, he's a lot more ready to flee. Or to grab her and flee with her. He really should’ve done that. Except, right, there’s that nobility thing again. Also the respecting her choice thing. And the being a chicken thing. A noble chicken. It makes him chuckle and Teal'c, who stands next to him, raises an eyebrow at him, Are you alright?

He’s standing, but can't bring himself to look back, where he knows she is about to appear any second.

When he hears people gasping he knows she's there, and he fists his hands, and stubbornly stares forward. But not at her almost husband. Never.

He's there for her, but that's as much as he can do. Unless she wants to completely destroy him. And he'd probably let her do it, she only needs to ask.

He sees her walk past him out of the corner of his eye. Past him and right to that bastard. It could've been you, a stupid and annoying voice inside his head taunts him, but he firmly tells himself to shut up.

But then she turns, so he can see her profile, and she's smiling, but his gaze moves lower to her stomach and wait, when did that happen?

The night sky is just beginning to brighten when Jack O'Neill wakes up with a start. The soothing and familiar sounds of the night bugs coming from the open windows do nothing to calm the rapid beating of his heart.

He flings the cover off and sits on the bed, with both hands covering his face. The cold air makes him shiver, but he ignores it.

A gentle hand presses to the small of his back and he almost jumps off the bed. "Jesus." His reflexes may not be what they used to be, but he's still better that most people at unexpected. It's dark enough, but he can just barely make out her face. And a very sleepy, somewhat confused, and impossibly adorable expression she's wearing. "Carter."

Her voice is rough with sleep and her hair is sticking in different directions. "Mhmp." She coughs a little. "You okay?"

He thinks he's going crazy. But instead he says, "What’re you doing here?"

Sam rubs her eye with one hand, and the look she gives him, well, the more adorable version of it, is as familiar to him as breathing. Slight exasperation mixed with confusion, fondness, and humor. He has no idea how she manages it. "I'm sleepin' here."

When he just keeps staring at her, she lifts her hand and places it on his thigh making him jump a little.

"What is it?" She's almost completely awake now.

"You’re here," he says slowly.

Her brows furrow. "Yes. Uh, do you want me to leave?"

The word is out of his mouth before she even finishes speaking, "No!"

She looks pleased. "Then what the hell is this all about?"

He isn't completely sure himself. But she’s here. "Carter?"

"What?"

He grabs her hand, still resting on his thigh, clasps it tight and hauls her up. She doesn't resist, just makes a muffled ooof sound. But now they're sitting face to face on his bed in his cabin and the look of confusion on his face is mirrored on hers. He pulls her to him, tight. Her arms wrap around his heck and one of her hands strokes his hair.

"Did you have a bad dream?" she says quietly against his neck.

Jack freezes. It can't be. He's more that capable of telling the difference between a terrible reality and a nightmare. Isn't he? But while the images that woke him up seemed bright and real and memory like just minutes ago, they are now dull and blurry around the edges. They still make him shiver. He moves one hand to her flat belly, needing to be sure.

Sam stills and then she pulls away slightly. He immediately misses her warmth.

"Do you want to tell me what's wrong?" she asks him softly.

"How many times have you been married?"

She looks startled, like it's the last thing on Earth she expected to hear, but she doesn't hesitate before answering. "Zero. Unless you count that time on PJ8-747." She smirks. "We never did get a divorce. I don't think they would've given it to us anyway. I’ve been engaged twice, but you know that," she says just as softly.

His relief is almost palpable and he knows she can see it. "I think I dreamt that you were about to marry Shanahan?" He looks away, embarrassed to have reacted this way, and then back at her. "It felt so real."

It's brighter now and he watches understanding dawn in her beautiful eyes. Sam has bad dreams, too.

She puts her hand on top of his, still pressed against her belly, correctly guessing the other part of his dream, and squeezes his fingers. Her other hand strokes his cheek. "I did not marry him." She scoots even closer. "I could not marry him." Their noses almost touch. "Because I love you," she says right before she kisses him.

And it's wonderful. Jack's sure he can draw all the strength he needs from her kisses. This all too real dream knocked him out of his element, but she makes him feel like himself again. He can only hope he does the same for her.

The kiss is soft and slow and when it ends, they don't move an inch away from each other.

He presses his forehead to hers and closes his eyes. "I love you."

He can hear the smile in her voice when she says, "D'you want to go outside, get some fresh air? The sun's going to rise pretty soon."

Jack opens his eyes and nods.
