This Month In History - October

Lots and lots of landmark anniversaries to celebrate this month:

Oct. 3, 2003: School of Rock opens

In Oct. 2003, Richard Linklater's biggest grossing film was released. It still holds up today and it was ahead of it's time in some ways. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 20th SOR!

Oct. 3, 2008: Rachel Getting Married opens

In Oct. 2008, Jonathan Demme's family drama was released. The big thing people talked about at the time was Anne Hathaway's performance, which was nominated for an Oscar. But the movie itself has actually gotten better each time I've returned to it. There's so many Demme trademarks in this (numerous previous collaborators have cameos, love and passion of music, handheld documentary-like camera work, etc) and it's worth re-visiting. It's a movie I saw with my now-wife just before we actually got married! Happy 15 RGM!

Oct. 4, 1968: Night of the Living Dead opens

In Oct. 1968, one of the greatest horror films ever was released. George A. Romero's zombie flick has stood the test of time. When I met him in 2015, he signed my DVD. Here my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 55 NOTLD!

Oct. 6, 1988: Dear John premieres

In Oct. 1988, one of the most underrated 80s sitcoms premiered. Taxi veteran Judd Hirsch played a newly divorced New Yorker, who joins a support group for divorced people. It was very much an ensemble show and the writing was quite good. Happy 35th DJ!

Oct. 10, 1988: Rattle and Hum released

In Oct. 1988, U2's companion piece album to their documentary film was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 35th R&H!

Oct. 10, 2003: Kill Bill Vol. 1 opens

In Oct. 2003, the first part of Quentin Tarantino's action epic was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 20th KBV1!

Oct. 11, 1968: Barbarella opens

In Oct. 1968, the futuristic sci-fi space funfest was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2018. Happy 55 Barbarella!

Oct. 12, 1993: Vs. and Aurora Gory Alice released

On the same day in 1993, two of my favorite alt-rock albums of that era were released. Pearl Jam's second album Vs. was released. After the massive success of Ten, I was starting to feel a little burned-out on PJ by the time Vs. came out. That had nothing to do with the band or their musical abilities, just that I played the hell out of the album and needed to decompress. But loads of friends were heavy into the Vs. album and I eventually was lead to buying it after hearing some of the songs on radio. It's easily one of their best albums! In 2013, I included the album in my Top 5 PJ Albums and while a lot has changed since that list, but if I had to re-do the list, Vs. would still make the cut. Boston alt-rockers Letters To Cleo brought an element of power pop and melodicism to the Alternative Nation. The debut album Aurora Gory Alice was first released on CherryDisc, but in 1994 it was re-issued on Giant around the same time "Here and Now" was featured on the Melrose Place soundtrack and critiqued by Beavis and Butt-Head. But it was singer Kay Hanley's voice and the entire band's songwriting that has made this one of my favorites of the 90s. Years later I got to interview Kay and guitarist Greg McKenna for my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 and here on this site. Happy 30th Vs. and AGA!

In Oct. 1993, the stop-motion animation Halloween / Christmas classic was released. I saw it opening night in the movie theater and was blown away by it. I've seen it many times at both holidays over the years and now I watch it with my son. Happy 30th NBC!

Everything has his spot. He also keep another library in his bedroom, with all the books and scrolls he has, most of them are healing or history tomes ♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon: (done) ☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon: (done) ♒ - cooking/food headcanon: tried to cook mole stew once and it actually wasnt that bad, at least that's what durin and disa told him over and over again

Maedhros:

☾ - sleep headcanon: Dude hasn't slept in years, not since Angband and even before that every time he tries to sleep he hears his brother's screams as he gets burned alive and then it's his father's death. So he just stays up and broods or does accounting or practices swordfighting or writes long letters to Fingon and after Fingon's death he still writes those letters he just never sends them. Sometimes he goes to the rampart of Himling and looks west and thinks about his mother ☆ - happy headcanon: he used to be happy once right? he must have been, he remembers hours spend laughing at Caranthir's antics or helping Ambarussa with their calligraphy or festivals he spends dancing with Fingon and Aredhel and his mother's kin. Catching things for his younger brothers and cousins they couldn't reach, playing hide and seek with them ✿ - Sex headcanon: he can be ace as a treat ■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon: it's all very sparse and he doesn't have much stuff anyway most of his things are still in Valinor and he didn't get to bring anything and he also doesn't really get attached to any item be it decorative or practical plus he doesnt sleep so why would heed a bed, if he rests he does it leaned against a wall or smth ♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon: he loved dancing and singing and playing the Middle-earth version of volleyball ☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon: likes: taking walks at night with only the stars and moon above, he plays long distance chess against caranthir, he also likes wine. dislikes: actually can't stand maglor like at all and its all rather silly cause they entered a music competition as kids and he was unprepared so he asked Maglor to write him smth and then maglor played both his and Maedhro's song, and well.. Maedhros is still his father's son and even nerdanel couldnt smooth things over. ♒ - cooking/food headcanon: he was a bit of a picky eater as a kid and hated everything yellow, so no apples, potatoes, yellow bell peppers, quinces, cheese, or yellow sewets etc but he's not a picky eater anymore and wolves down everything he can get his hands on

Fili:

☾ - sleep headcanon: fili sleeps like a rock and he hates sleeping aloe cause when he was little he used to share a bed with both his mother and his younger brother, so he can't really fall asleep unless he knows someone is at least in the same room as him. ☆ - happy headcanon: his father taught him how to braid and he was often allowed to braid his father's, Dis' and Thorin's beard and he felt very honoured doing that and ofc he taught Kili how to do his own hair ✿ - Sex headcanon: sadly he died a virgin even though he had been pining after Nori for the entire trip to Erebor, they werent even stuck in a cell together in Mirkwood, round of Fs in the chat pls ■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon: he shares everything with Kili actually and sometimes Kili uses up all the soap and then there's no soap left for Fili, or sometimes Fili uses up all the flour and butter and milk and Kili just wants to have some cereal but alas no milk. And no Dis did not kick them out she would never she loves her sons too much for that, it's just that thorin thought it would be best if they lived closer to the smithies, especially since they both have a knack for oversleeping ♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon: he has a 12 step hair care and skin care routine, everyone always thinks Ili is the vain one but no it's him, he is the one that takes ages in the bathroom and looks into every mirror or window he passes ☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon: likes: baking he actually tried to convince thorin once that he much rather wanted to be baker (an equally important and well respected jobs among the dwarves) but thorin told him it would be better if he knew his way around a proper weapon ; he also likes a good prank, and o boi did he use to prank Balin and Dwalin cause he and Kili knew they could get away with it (Balin) and could fit into hidey holes they couldn't reach (Dwalin) dislikes: he hates rain and humidity, again he's quite vain. He also dislikes being late but his bed is just too comfy ♒ - cooking/food headcanon: he secretly loves baking.

I made a promise i would put this up today, no matter what sort of divergence presented itself.

You may have noticed an abundance of baby references since may, with flutterings of cryptic calling on this or that; well today being 9/11, the spirits tied things up nicely with a bow, demanding politely that i talk.

Perhaps you’ve read the tape “remembering 9/11”. It is a tape from the end of february 2017. I was hiding out in a hotel in CT with the tarot reader’s painting, and pictures of Stella/Katie and Psychic Jakk. If memory serves, it was the weekend that PJ started telling me all the things he had been hiding in his feral little heart, and proposed to me, even though he was still legally married. I cried at that.

In this weekend i believed him to be in a straitjacket in a hospital. He claimed Blond’s mom took him there at my suggestion & that a restraining order had been put in place so he’d be safe. In this particular conversation I talked about the day that i first thought he was shot, and what happened in the aftermath (I’d look at it again, to get a true feel).

This had always been foggy to me. All i knew was the baby started talking to me in a hotelroom, and suddenly I was enraptured in a psychic soap opera, cleaning my house in black underwear, waiting for my shot, estranged boyfriend to walk in the door.

Something that i truly appreciated about psychic jakk’s come to jesus transformation where out of nowhere he was telling me every love-infested thought of the last four years was that it felt like i finally could be heard about all the emotional turmoil i had been forced to hold inside. when i listen to that tape, i hear a woman who 100% absolutely believed she was talking to her estranged boyfriend about the day that reality and fed fantasy crossed over, where the aftermath could only be collapse.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize it wasn’t an astral version of him. All you have to do is look at each drama that I was told about day to day to put it together.

Present-day……Things took a turn on the baby’s 9th birthday. Honestly i want to attribute it to the talk to me sachet powder i put in my shoes, or maybe the music spell tori amos did in the theatre after reading the 7 page letter i wrote on back of y’all’s pictures about our cast of characters and my five year adventure. The point is, mid-May was when I was able to put the puzzle pieces together, and I slowly horrifyingly realized that the spirit of our aborted child had not only been conjured up and chained to his would be-birth parents, but that he had been hiding in my apartment while I was hiding out in Yonkers in 2020, and that the thing I saw moving in the closet that i videotaped before I left was actually a 7 yr old spirit.

Once I realized it was him for real, the floodgates were open. Whenever a song came on that mentioned a baby, he’d start tapping me. When I was walking through the dollar store because I had no money for food, I heard someone say to look at the coffee cups. Love you to the moon and back stood out like a hologram. Later that day, Ronan by Taylor Swift played, a song that played on his birthday about a little boy who dies. I love you to the moon and back, she sings. I broke into tears.

They do that shit all the time. All the time. You just have to listen.

I suddenly became a full-time mom. It brought to mind something Steel had said when I was pregnant and torn; “ You’ll be raising that child, whether its in physical form or not.”

I cried a lot because i felt guilty, sad and boulversee as the French say, about imagining his experience. I remember the day that i made the connection that the spirit talking to me was making the exact same movements that i assumed was my niece for all of 2016-17. That was probably the moment where it all started clicking. He was able to put pictures in my head just like the witches could and use the music to get me understand things that i was missing, and that became my norm. The very first day when he played songs with names of people who were involved, I didn’t want to believe what I was hearing because there has been a lot of trickery, and the learning curve has been painful, but i soon was able to discern. That was when I realized spirits are much smarter than humans. Or as smart in a different way.

That same day my clairvoyance expanded; I clearly saw him with a shackle around his neck. I think i was more horrified by that than anything else. From that day forward, I tried to figure out exactly what had happened to him so i could find out how to undo it. I invoked angels and deities, and begged for help, and I’ll probably do that until someone can guarantee that his spirit is truly free. He says that the triad, all three of them, still pull on his chain.

I guess I can see the point. Wake up an unborn child to drive the mama insane. It probably could have worked. We all know I was messed up by the abortion, especially the tarot reader. But what scares me about self-absorbed millennials fucking with power and the dead is playing God with innocent lives. Forget about how much you may hate me for whatever reason; what should scare you is your lack of conscience. It’s a disorder, you know. It’s called sociopathy.

Today at the end of the daytime session, the baby kept nudging me excitedly when Enchanted played. “I was enchanted to meet you. “

So maybe, jakk, i wasn’t enchanted to meet *you*. But it happened.

And that when I thought you were shot which I shakily told my mother and analyst as I waited for you to walk through my front door…..well, maybe it was “entirely imagined” as your terse text said.

It just wasn’t imagined by me.

It was snowy outside, as per the time of year. Snow was lightly falling from the sky like specs of pure joy. The stars were sparkling along the navy blue sky and the full moon was shining a pure white, lighting up the field surrounding the Burrow. Gifts had already been exchanged hours ago, Christmas dinner had also finished hours ago and now it was time for family time in front of the roaring fire. It was all perfect.

Mostly.

The only problem lies with the fact that Bill did not tell his family about his separation with a specific blonde woman and instead brought home a “friend”. Bill had forgotten to share his newest relationship with his family. He groaned in front of the door before entering his family home and turned to you, quickly telling you exactly what had him rubbing his temples.

It didn’t bother you. You just smiled at him and put a hand on his shoulder, telling him that they’d be able to figure it out with time. He wasn’t worried about them disowning him or anything, his family was so loving, he just.. Forgot. That, and he just didn’t want to disappoint them, everyone loved Fleur.

But they also loved you! This wasn’t the first time they met you and it wouldn’t be the last. Bill and you held a relationship stronger than iron beams holding together a bridge, so you both expected it to travel pretty far down the road. But like I said before, everything was going close to perfect. It wasn’t until said ex got brought up.

“Bill, dear, why didn’t you bring Fleur?” Molly turned to her son before quickly turning to you. “Not that we don’t love your company, (Y/n)!” She clearly meant no offense to you, so you just shrugged it off.

“Oh, um. She was busy.” He played with the mug in his hands before sipping it. The whole family was in the living room, enjoying some family time and hot cocoa. Your own grip tightened on your mug while you took a messy sip, your hands quickly coming to wipe away the spilt dribbles.

“Oh, that’s a shame! We haven't seen her in some time. I’d love to see how she’s doing. You stopped mentioning her in your letters.” Molly kept trailing on, oblivious to how awkward you both felt. No one was exactly good with ex’s being brought up. You swallowed thickly.

“Ah, yeah.. We um- We kinda-”

“Oh, Bill, you didn’t.” Arthur spoke up, once again, oblivious to how Bill stiffened next to you. Your eyes flicked quickly between your boyfriend and his father. “You didn’t.. You didn’t get her-”

“What? Dad- No-” His face quickly flushed colors while his younger siblings snickered with each other. “No, dad, we aren’t expecting.” He removed a hand from his mug to drag it down his face. That same hand fell and landed on your knee. “Actually, it’s different that that, we-”

“Oh! You proposed?” Molly interjected again, causing you to sigh. “You really should have owled us, Bill! This is very important information that really should be shared with your own mother.” Her voice slowly grew quiet as you quickly exited the home with a quick, pathetic excuse and rushed to get fresh air.

You quickly remembered it was cold as hell and you were in a t-shirt, a pair of red and green flannel pj pants and the heart melting reindeer slippers your boyfriend had gotten you that morning as a gift. At least the cold Burrow floor wasn’t a problem anymore. Your arms wrapped tightly around yourself as the cool, winter breeze blew past, dragging some white puffs of snow along with it.

A sniffle escaped you while your eyes burned with tears. You weren’t much of a crier, but something about the citation was just grinding your gears and it hurt. You wondered a few feet out, noticing a log resting before the frozen pond. You brushed the light snow fall off and sat down, ignoring the uncomfortable wetness.

You really regretted not bringing a jacket. You were so lost in your own head you didn’t even notice Bill now walking up behind you. You let out a sigh, your warm breath becoming a tiny blast of fog before slowly vanishing. You rubbed your hands together quickly, trying to keep some part of you warm.

“Are you cold? Do you need my sweater?” Bill’s voice caused you to jump and turn to him quickly. His voice was softer than freshly fallen snow and his gaze on you was somehow softer than that. "Of course you're cold, it's freezing out here. " he whispered, more to himself, and he shrugged off his Christmas sweater, gently handing it to you. He walked around the length of the log and sat down next to you, his hand coming to your knee again.

You tugged it on, letting out a quick thank you and casted him a sat smile.

"Oh, love." His voice was still so soft. "Please, don't cry." he cupped your chin with a glove covered hand and made you look at him. His other hand came up to gently dry your damp cheeks. “It’ll be ok.. I promise.”

“Can you.. I.. Just hold me.. Maybe?”

Bill didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around your shoulders and tug you into his side. He kissed your temple while you pressed your head into the scarf covering his neck. He rocked you side to side, hoping the motion would help you feel a tiny bit better.

“We’ll work this out, I promise.” He whispered to you, unaware of the audience behind the two of you. “It’ll be ok.” He gave you a squeeze.

They knew you were more than a friend.

Dean grabbed a shopping cart from the rack at the store entrance and pushed it awkwardly through the store as well as the crowds of people. The light sounds of Christmas music played through the speakers in the background of the roar of constant chatter. Items were in display boxes in the center of aisles marked For Sale! in red letters on big signs. Different things from men’s and women’s cologne to fuzzy socks and bigger things like expensive and needless foot massagers.

Needless to say, Dean didn’t know where to start, but he was going to walk around until he fingered it out. He was determined to give you the Christmas you deserved. He had a plan that he’d cooked up on the way up here. He had twelve days to give you the holiday experience of a lifetime, and he wasn’t going to let any of it go to waste, he was going to start with a small Christmas present for you to open tonight when he returned to the Dean cave, and then spend each day surprising you with something new.

Tonight there was a big snowstorm coming, and he’d already had his plan for that as well, but he needed something he could give you for tonight. Being hunters, you didn’t really wear makeup. He didn’t want to get you something for the kitchen because then he felt like it looked like he was asking you to cook more when he wasn’t.

He did keep coming back to the fuzzy socks. The bunker was always cold this time of year, even with its artificial climate control, and he had more than once seen you shivering in the morning and walking around with his jacket on. So he grabbed those, and also a pajama set that looked like it matched with a long-sleeved flannel shirt and plaid fuzzy pants. He also knew you liked hot chocolate, so he grabbed the stuff to make some hot chocolate and some alcohol to add to it. He knew it wasn’t much, but it was only the start.

He did feel a little strange Christmas shopping. It was something he had never actually done before, but he had to admit that he felt a little string of excitement as he looked at your new pajamas and socks. He hoped this was the start of something between the two of you. Something that would last long after Christmas had come and gone.

Back at the bunker, you took your time in getting to the shower. You had spent some time in your room looking through old family photos you had hidden under your bed of Christmases past and things that you would never have again with a heavy heart. You also spent some time kicking yourself for worsening your mood when Dean wanted to spend time with you. That was something normally that made your day. You carved the attention of the elder Winchester, even if you had never admitted it out loud. So when he came up with this whole movie night idea you should have been over the moon and not dwelling on the past.

After some time you pulled yourself up off of the floor and put the pictures away before making your way to the showers, where the promise of steaming hot water and Dean’s soap awaited you. You wondered if he noticed you using his shampoo and soap but just chose to never say anything. It smelt like him, and it was comforting on those cold nights alone.

Speaking of cold, the temperature had started to drop a great deal tonight, you could feel it in the air that hung in the bathroom as you peeled the clothes from your body and stepped under the scalding spray. You were glad to be back in the bunker and out of the storm outside. You loved the snow, and you loved to play in it like an overgrown kid, but you didn’t like traveling in it.

By the time you had gotten out of the shower, your skin was wrinkled and the shower was filled with warm steam, but you felt more relaxed in body and mind. You had been able to mostly get your anxiety under control with the help of the hot water and Dean’s soap. When you stepped out into the steam warmed room and wrapped the towel around your body you were surprised by a poorly wrapped present on the sink waiting for you. You blinked for a moment and looked around cautiously before making your way to it.

There was a little note taped to the top of the package that said, “Day 12, something to keep you warm, D,'' written in Dean’s handwriting and you swore for a moment your heart stopped in your chest as tears pooled in your eyes. Had he really gotten you a present?

You tentatively unwrap the gift to find a new pajama set with a set of fuzzy socks sat haphazardly on top of the folded clothes and smile to yourself at his obvious attempt to do it himself. Your heartfelt like it could swell up and sore around the room and tears were steadily tracking down your cheeks as you quickly dressed in your gift. Dean didn’t have to go to the store and do that for you, but he did, and it meant the world to you.

By the time you made your way to the Dean Cave, Dean was sitting a tray of hot chocolate on the little table in front of the oversized recliners, and grinning widely at you as you appeared in the doorway in your new PJ’s.

“Looks great on you Sweetheart,” he said proudly as you blushed and made your way over to him. “I’m glad they fit.”

“Dean, you didn’t have to do this, but you made my day. Thank you so much,” you tell him, throwing your arms around his neck and his arms wrap around your waist, pulling you into a tight hug before lowering you both down to sit in the same recliner and handing you a mug of hot chocolate that you were pretty sure he’d spiked with alcohol like you had done for him that one hunt in Detroit when he’d caught himself a pretty nasty cold.

“I wanted to do it Y/N/N, and this just day 12,” he told you with a wink, and you giggle in spite of yourself as he turns Elf on the TV, and wraps his arms around you, and pulls you into him. Something he had never done often, but you love it nonetheless.

“You really don’t have to do this, Dean. I know you don’t really like the holidays all that much,” you tell him earnestly as he sips from the much in his left hand.

Dean shrugged and smiled at you, “maybe I just never had anyone I really wanted to celebrate it with,” he said simply, and your blush deepened as your heart pounded against your rib cage.

You snuggled down into his hold a little more comfortably, a content sigh leaving your lips. You had no idea what Dean had planned, but you were excited to see what the next few days had in store for you.

Dean couldn’t wipe the smile on his face off if he wanted to, and even long after you had fallen asleep in his arms he didn’t even bother moving you, just slouched down the chair more than content to sleep right here with you all night long.

The way your face lit up as you walked into the room in his gift made his broken and battered heart beat again for the first time in ages, maybe celebrating Christmas with you is just what he needed too.

Average hours of sleep: ahahahahahahahahahah... uhhh it depends on the day. i normally stay up late and sleep in if i don’t have anything to do the next morning but my work sometimes demands i get up early and i usually chug along on about 6 or 8 hours of sleep in either case

Number of blankets I sleep under: Just one! I haven’t really experimented with more than one but I get hot really easily under a fluffy blanket sooo

Favorite fictional characters: Hmm... at the moment, not counting my own characters or other peoples’ OCs, my top three right now, in no particular order, are Sado from The Hex, Mari from OMORI, and of course my all-time fave, Drizzt Do’urden from R.A. Salvatore’s books

Favorite book: I don’t really read too much any more,,, and I’ve already mentioned my love for R.A. Salvatore’s books so that’s cheating. I’ve been really into this book I bought called To My Trans Sisters, which is a collection of letters to trans women from trans women that’s been really uplifting

Favorite artists/bands: khai dreams, Mother Mother, Muse, Bleachers... call me basic lmao

When did you create your blog?: This blog? Uhh... I think it was around the middle / beginning of 2020? My first ever blog was all the way back in 2016 though!

Do you have any other blogs?: Only my incorrect quotes blog and my nsfw sideblog!

What made you decide to get a Tumblr?: I couldn’t tell you. I can tell you all about the story about how the FN.aF fandom got me into the RP scene but I’m not sure what prompted me to move to tumblr since it was so, so long ago. I guess I decided to just do it! Made some friends along the way, most of which are gone now, but... hey ho, I’m here now.

Do you get asks on a daily basis?: Somewhat? I tend to reach out to a lotta people and reblog a fair amount of memes, I just don’t get too much unprompted stuff which sucks. It’s always a pleasant surprise when someone is invested enough in my muses to send little questions, and I really wish it happened more! Now, as for actually answering those asks...... uh, this question is over--!

Why did you choose your URL?: It’s kinda the theme of my story and the muses, at least it was back when it was just Alex, Yeong-Hui and Garis, but it still kinda fits. The whole idea is that their story and experiences are reflective of the way people from totally different backgrounds and with totally different life experiences can find unexpected solace in the little common ground they have with one another, and conversely how people who go through the exact same situations can turn out so, so differently. The prime cases of this are of course with Alex & Garis with what they each went through and how their relationship blossomed, but not it’s extended even further with Theo’s backstory situation, and Souji being a bit of an outlier to the entire thing yet still being everyone’s friend, more or less! That, and I really can’t think of a better URL. I’m not going back to something like hearts-of-coal, but spectrumbound was pretty good... ah, well.
