It is January 2024
I'm still a Covid ward nurse
In the last couple months I've seen 3 people die specifically and directly because they chose to go on a cruise or bus tour as their way to enjoy retirement / enjoy their time before they need a rest home
Covid ages older people a decade in a week
People who were still managing to live independently at home with maybe a cleaner once a week - again and again I see them spend 3 weeks in hospital and be forced to discharge straight to an aged care facility, if they come out of it at all.
Don't let older people go on things like bus tours and cruises.
A memorable holiday with your partner, very easily ends with one of you losing your life, and the other never being the same again, and never being able to go home again.
Wear a mask.
Get vaccinated.
Quit smoking.
Encourage community or social events to continue to provide some degree of Covid safety.

Hello again! I am here to share an interesting fact with you all.
Did you know that the word beach in French, is spelled plage?
In which case, I do suppose a certified lifeguard could also be referred to as... a plage doctor!

can you smell covid?
additional context: I could smell The Sickness on my boyfriend a few days before he tested positive up through to the day before the end of his paxlovid course.
and if you can, can you describe what it smelled like?

one of the things that does aggravate me about that post though is this (and other similar sentiments):
If you want an environment in which you feel safe from covid, at this point in the pandemic (when the virus is endemic and not spreading rapidly as far as we can see from case counts) it is your responsibility to take the steps necessary to make you feel safe.
because like. actually it sucks that i have to keep myself safe, and also there IS no environment in which i feel safe... because nobody is masking. my primary issue is that nobody is masking on public transport and in crowded indoor spaces. i can't really make myself feel "safe" when that safety relies on other people. yknow?
i don't appreciate that that post, like so many people who choose not to mask anymore, places the responsibility of keeping oneself safe on the people who are most at risk (to be clear i'm not particularly at risk other than having mild asthma, but the post addresses immunocompromised people specifically here and i think it's kind of shitty to say "well a terminal cancer patient has to keep themselves safe, it's nobody else's responsibility to do so" even if it's true).
idk, like. the post does a great job of explaining the online fearmongering and paranoia and reassuring us that things aren't as bad as that even if covid is still a very real threat... and for the most part, it also does a good job of like, explaining that look, people are not being malicious here they're just trying to live in a way that makes sense to them
buuuut it still kind of feels like it misses the point that people who are worried about catching covid are worried because there is only so much they can do to mitigate that risk if the people around them won't do the same. i mask up every time i'm indoors but i still have to take public transport where almost nobody is masking, ventilation is questionable, and i have no fucking idea how many people's infected breath is still lingering in the air.
like. i think it would be unreasonable of me to expect everyone to mask up at every single indoor gathering forever and to never go out and do anything that poses a slight risk of respiratory infection transmission. people deserve to live their lives as they choose.
but i don't think it's unreasonable to be frustrated that people won't even mask on crowded buses or trains or in doctor's waiting rooms anymore. idk. there's a difference there, to me, even if i can't fully articulate it, and even if i KNOW that it's my own responsibility to keep myself safe, i don't think it's unreasonable to be upset that i'm the only one shouldering that burden. yknow?

Hey loves, new COVID variant that appeared about three weeks ago, BQ 1.1 has violent vomiting and diarrhea symptoms, think dysentery. It escapes vaccines so far and is especially dangerous for people with depleted immune systems, especially cancer patients who apparently can take a drug that makes them especially sensitive. Wear a fucking N95 / FFP2 mask and wash your hands regularly.

Yet another PSA from your friendly neighbourhood ward nurse
If you or a close person ends up in hospital please check in and make sure we have your contact details correct.
We go over the personal info form with all newly admitted patients, but these days most people don't have phone numbers memorized, and even though we check, contact numbers for next of kin often don't work when we try to call you.
Check your phone and make sure you've got an emergency contact number set up
Make sure your important people are clearly labelled (I have my people saved by actual name, but then also labelled with relationship like mother and housemate, and have them starred as important contacts)
Check in with your older relatives or neighbours - make sure that they have this set up in /their/ phones as well
And if they are older and at risk of becoming confused when unwell, it may be worth setting up their phone so it does not require a password
I don't know if that's official recommendation or not
All I know is that the other night, we had a new admission brought in by his neighbour, who had checked on him because she hadnt seen him in a few days
She found him collapsed at home - weakened because of Covid
None of the contact numbers we had on file for his family worked
He collapsed again within an hour of us receiving him
He was dead within 5 hours
The only person we could call was the neighbour who brought him in
The only reason we managed to contact his family at all was because he had his phone in his pocket, it didn't need a passcode to unlock, and the doctor could go through the numbers that shared his family name
Please
Wear a mask
Get vaccinated
Check on your neighbours
Check on your elderly and at risk community members and family
Go through safety precautions with them - make sure they have these things set up
Help them set up their phones so they can easily use them even if feeling confused
That's the difference between dying alone or not

My, I have been quite unmotivated as of late... I'm sad to report I've fallen ill once more. The holidays were difficult as I was quite sick during Christmas as well, but I'm shocked to find it happening again so soon.
Fortunately, I'm nearly recovered! It is no longer painful to speak, and I do not have an ache of the head every day. I am very grateful for this.
I do not have much else to report. I have been enjoying the Anne of Green Gables novel series recently. Anne reminds me much of myself!
Yours,
Mina ♥

My summer so far:
Allergic reactions to mysterious bug bites
Shenanigans with @cigaretteburnslikefairylights (a good thing!)
COVID
Tendonitis
Rectal surgery
Niagara Falls and "The Importance of Being Earnest" with @meldanya44 (a good thing!)
And now, today, the most brutal bout of food poisoning I have ever experienced
The cons are vastly outweighing the pros and I am so, so fucking tired.

shoutout to the few people i see still masking in train stations, on buses, in grocery stores, in crowded streets. you remind me that i'm not crazy or overreacting, that covid is still a very real and very present threat, that we should still be masking in public spaces, and that i'm protecting others by protecting myself.
it feels like everyone wants to just 'move on' from the pandemic and pretend the risk is worth the 'reward' of 'living normally' (aka not inconveniencing themselves). i'm grateful for the people who remind me that there are folks out there that walk the walk as much as they talk the talk when it comes to giving a shit about other people's safety.
