“Jack,” said he, walking into the cabin, “what are you at?” “I am trying to get this God-damned plant to stand upright. Do what I may, they keep wilting. I water them before breakfast and again in the last dog-watch, and still they wilt. Upon my word, it is too bad.”

So this post is going to be a bit weird, but, bear with me.
I have these four plants. Seriously, bear with me. And for whatever reason, I decided to give them names: two are Good Omens characters, and two are from Discworld. Three of the plants are doing wonderfully-they're happy, healthy, growing like crazy.
Then, there's Windle Poons.
Tumblr media
Windle Poons appears to be dying. At the same time, Windle Poons is not entirely ready to give up the ghost, as he recently made a new leaf.
If you've read Reaper Man, you'll know that there are some striking similarities between Windle Poons the plant and Windle Poons the wizard (mostly the dying part). So now, I can't help but wonder if I unknowingly cursed my plant by naming it.
Anyway, moral of the story is, be careful if you name your plants.
Also, does anyone know how to save Windle Poons? I've been trying a variety of things I've seen online to no avail.

I wish there were plant doctors in the same way there are vets
I just want to shove my yellow-leafed plant against the chest of a specialist and be like “cure him”

Scutellaria parvula, aka small skullcap, aka dwarf skullcap looks so much like the Japanese Mazus that it's disappointing. Like, I was so excited at first when I noticed the Mazus, until I looked closer and discovered the leaves were wrong and it had yellow dots on the flowers. My hunt for native and local skullcaps continues...

ok this sounds insane but in 2018 i went to a few carnivorous plant talks at the botany conference in minnesota. i got caught up in conversation with one of the guys there who was a huge nepenthes guy who told me a story about another collector in the pacific northwest who'd been buying poached plants, like a huge amount, and eventually got staked out by the fish and wildlife service and arrested and had all his plants seized and went to prison for it. idk if i ever talked about this on this blog before-- i know i liveblogged a lot from that conference but cant remember what all i posted-- but ive avoided talking about it since then because i was never able to find like, news articles or anything covering it, but behold.... we now have proof it was real, and im like 80% sure this was this guy he was talking about. the raid happened in 2016 and they'd been staking them out since 2013. he had nearly 400 plants and had been sourcing many of them from poachers in indonesia and borneo.
remember folks: poaching happens with plants too! it's a huge problem not only in carnvirous plants (nepenthes especially, which this piece is dedicated to talking about) but also in native plant populations in the US, including native carnivorous plant populations (north and south carolina's venus fly traps, california's darlingtonia, and sarracenia from the east coast), native orchids (historically one of the most poached categories), desert plants/cacti/succulents, and slow-growing woody ornamentals (cycads, for example). never buy bare-root plants off ebay or facebook! your best bet is local nurseries (which usually purchase farm-raised plants that do well in a wide range of conditions, and as a result have a healthy population in the wild) or specialty greenhouses (more expensive, but at least in the case of carnivorous plants offer young plants bred from established adult plants in-house, raised in captivity).

i know the creators of worlds beyond number have been clear that they're not exploring a world with our real-life social strata
but that does not exempt *us the audience* from the biases and blindspots of our real-life social strata
every time i see a post that implies that suvi is uniquely unkind or arrogant, or more annoying than either of the other PCs, or that it's the presence of ame and eursalon that influence her towards humanity, i have to wonder if the poster is projecting onto a confident Black woman
the same thing happened with laerryn. xerxes was *actively courting a destroyer god* out of grief for his love, but we had sympathy for him. laerryn went to dizzying extremes trying to save her love, and we get:
"but laerryn cast blight on the tree!" "but suvi was trying to fight orima!" yeah, aabria is an excellent player who makes internally consistent character choices that drive the plot and drama of the whole game forward. stories without conflict aren't going to keep your attention, y'all should be thanking her for telling a good story
in other words: she should not need to be sweet and humble for you to empathize or understand or refrain from public judgment of her character. she should not have to make herself smaller for you to accept her persona.
interrogate your instinct to be publicly critical of her characterization and choices - is it really coming from an honest place, or are you letting some well-established biases that we're all indoctrinated into warp your perception of what all of the PCs are doing? a good indicator: do you extend the same level of critique to all of the characters, or just the one making choices you personally don't vibe with?
it's important for us the audience to be aware of how we participate in the ecosystem of storytelling. we're not just here to consume content for our own gratification. we also have to be good, thoughtful, active listeners.

i love how sometimes, despite all the medical advancements of the 21st century, the only thing that relieves pain is sitting/laying/standing in a weird position because it places/doesn't place pressure on certain spots
