Origon the Denouncer (Archon Studio Dungeons & Lasers)
It has optional wings, but I again wanted the more traditional Asian look. The head was a little tricky to assemble and I had to use a bit of clear resin to fill in some gaps without ruining the paint job around them.
There were some random flashes of inspiration here, like using a blue wash on the scales and on the red parts of the hair/head. The red on the spines isn't as warm as I'd like because I didn't start with a yellow basecoat there, so it got a bit brownish and I ended up having to give it orange highlights.
Also, I seem to only have this bright green in contrast paint and not in normal paint. Army Painter just doesn't seem to have the specific shade in normal paint.
Here's both the dragon and phoenix together, as is traditional.
Tumblr media
I figured out that I did the phoenix colors in the wrong order. No matter how much you drybrush yellow on top of red, it'll never be as vibrant as starting with yellow and shading with red. I wanted the phoenix to be brighter where it's hottest (at the body) and redder as it goes out, like how flames actually work. Painting dark to light works on smaller flames though, like on torches, but in that situation I'm actually painting the yellow/white on rather than drybrushing.
There was one of these dragons at the painting competition in the large miniature category, and while I could never achieve that level of precision and consistency with my own painting (and not really interested in doing so, tbh), the piece is imo even more boring than oh look another box art and was not commended. (Like if you're going to do monochrome, go hard mode and do it black/white for style points.)

プラモデル ☆ Plastic Models!
One of my other hobbies and a reason why I disappear so much.
I tried making Gunpla boxes, but they are really bad lol. I don't know what I'm doing. Also a HG box probably wouldn't be that big but whatever, it's the Sims.

I have finished my 2000s Revell reissue of the classic 1960s Aurora Wolfman kit. From black plastic to this!
This was an absolute blast to work on. I've had this kit for five or six years but was intimidated by the fact that it required gluing and painting. I even cut a custom styrene base, which really solidifies it as a finished object. I'm so happy I took the leap and I'm really proud of the results.

So. Staying sick at home I finally got some time to start on one of my non-Warhammer projects.
This time I’m kitbashing a WWII destroyer from 2 of her sister ships.
The plan is to install lights inside the hull and superstructure as a test run before I start on any bigger ship build.
I’ve drilled over 150 portholes in the hull and glued the propellers and everything else that goes directly on the hull.
You can also see that I dry-fit the front deck.
I’d say that the hull is basically ready. All that’s left is to clean it up (you can see some drilling residue around portholes and glue marks near the propellers - I’ll sand those).
With this done I’ll dry-fit the entire deck, cover it with tape and spraypaint the hull with primer.
After that comes painting which I need to do now - before I fill the portholes with optic fiber.
Preferable the next update will show the hull with lights in. Even if they’re not installed for good yet. One thing I’m not sure is if I should go with cold or warm light. I’m kinda suspecting that they wouldn’t be using cold white lights during WWII. Maybe outside of searchlights. Still. I’ll likely need to inquire at some museum or association.
Ah. I didn’t mention which ship it’ll be.
I’m trying to recreate the German Destroyer Z-23.

More pictures of Tiasha with her wings.
Don’t cry, Tiasha. You’ll get your weapons someday. In the meantime maybe you can cobbler your enemies with those massive legs.
Tiasha: WAAAAAAHHHH!!
Was it something I said?

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross plastic models catalog pencil board (shitajiki)
This is a pencil board showcasing Macross models made by both Arii and Imai (no Nichimo models). Here you will see the propensity for Japanese modeling companies to work in tandem with each other. If one company does a particular subject in 1:72 scale, then the other will make the subject in 1:100 scale so as not to step on each other’s toes.
In general, the Arii kits had more pronounced molded detail, more decals, and employed polycaps. Imai kits had overall better proportions though, making them the winner. Imai sold their molds to Bandai in (I believe it was) the early ‘90s, and Bandai has repopped most of them over the years since then, except for a few like the Zentraedi Quel Quallie reconnaissance ship. Arii last repopped their ‘80s Macross kits for the Macross 15th Anniversary. I’ve never asked Arii reps if they still have their old toolings for their old Macross kits. The Arii Destroid Monster (not pictured above) kit goes for quite a lot of money since it is in 1:160 scale and larger than Imai’s 1:200 scale version.
Also, check out the Macross acrylic paint sets that were available at the time. The one featured above was for the Glaug officer’s battle pod.

Infernal Phoenix (Archon Studio Dungeons & Lasers)
It has optional armor pieces, but I'm sticking to the more traditional look to pair with their Oriental dragon kit.
The egg is from a different D&L kit, but pieces of the eggshell are sculpted onto the phoenix's base so they belong together.
After building the main body, I realized that this really needed to be painted before assembly (lots of layered parts), which is something I don't do often.
