Pharmacy Accomodations for Trans people

Something for trans folks who get their medicine at a retail pharmacy(aka in stores chains or drugmarts)

Here are things you probably should know:

Pharmacists are more trained than technicians about trans stuff. So prepare for confusion and yes even a little bit of pushback sometimes. Techs are gonna be the main ones that handle you, most are very sweet its just the lack of education. If it ever gets bad(and I hope it doesn't) ask to speak to a pharmacist and ask about your request there. If they refuse or are cruel in anyway, switch. Pharmacies.

You CAN get the name on your profile to change even if it's not legally. This varies store to store on how they'll handle it. But it should be as simple as asking them to put it in parenthesis (). Deadname (real name) and although it doesn't get rid of your legal name yet, you can use your real name instead and they can still find you in the system.

Now, for your prescriptions. Let's say you're on hormones secretly, or that if certain people pick up your prescriptions you don't want them to know your on hormones. If a tech sees you have it ready, they will always hand that bag to them(they literally just need first name last name n birthday), UNLESS. You ask them to add a note in your file. Stating "Do not let anyone but (you) pick up hormones or let them know its ready." So if you have a situation like this, please let a tech know to put in your file.

Pharmacies aren't usually picky with needles and techs don't usually know what you need(because so many gauges and mls and shit) so keep a note of which needle gauge you have, so if you need more you can let them know. Not really a big one but helpful and nice.

If you don't have insurance always ask if they have a discount card you can use. If you have a goodrx card that can work, but some places aren't contracted with them and it won't work(albeit you can still use the app and use the coupon discounts there!) Don't be afraid to ask for assistance like that, techs are there to help.

If you're signing something that is basically saying you picked up your prescriptions you don't have to sign with your deadname. It's not a legal binding document, it's supposed to let you know for example if you forgot if you picked something up that you signed for it.(they usually have a digital copy but once again. Each store to their own.) So sign how you want, aslong as it lets you know it was you.

Big one here if you're afraid to do it in person incase of pushback: call. Call them and they should be able to help. And if it gets bad your in the comfort of your home and safe.
