FOTD #042 : pink oyster! (pleurotus djamor)

the pink oyster mushroom is a fungus in the family pleurotaceae. it is most commonly found in mexico, indonesia & places with similar climates !!

the big question : can i bite it?? YES :-) this fungus is edible & delicious. it is used in asian cooking. despite its choice edibility, it is rarely sold due to its 24h shelf life.

p. djamor description :

"the pink oyster mushroom, unsurprisingly, has a pink color. it has a curly cap which is 2 – 5 cm in diameter. the caps are also quite thin. the gills are long & pronounced. the stem is very short or even non existent."

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus)

More baby mushrooms! These are known as oyster ‘pins’, the just-emerging heads of what will become gorgeous shelves of readily identifiable edible fungi. Like the baby dryad’s saddle, I’ll pop back next week and see if they’ve grown.

#2059 - Pleurotus australis - Southern Oyster Mushroom

The spotty upper surface is not the natural state - it's severely moulded. The underside was even worse.

In fact, most of the mushrooms we saw on the island over the weekend were hopelessly infected. The heavy rain really wasn't helpful.

A large and handsome gilled mushroom, often found growing from the trunks of trees in Australia and New Zealand where it feeds on the dead or dying heartwood.
