The heaviness of her head was the first thing [Y/N] felt the moment she gained consciousness. Her eyelids fluttered a few times before her eyes fully opened only to close them back the next moment as she found the bright light of the room rather uncomfortable. She slowly opened her eyes again and blinked a few times, adjusting to the light in the room and scanning her surrounding.
Soon, she realized that she was in a hospital room and it didn't take long before she noticed her left leg in a cast. All the memories from the previous night at Mona's birthday party flooded her mind, causing tears to pool in her eyes.
She couldn't believe that A had actually tried to kill her and she was, of course, utterly relieved that the faceless monster hadn't succeeded in their task.
She pressed her head against the pillow and closed her eyes, causing the tears to run down her cheeks.
"[Y/N/N]?" a voice called along with the sound of a door opening.
[Y/N] turned her head in the direction of the familiar voice and through her blurred vision, she recognized the form of her older brother. She blinked a few times to clear her eyes while her brother was already wiping the tears away from her cheeks before cupping them in his hands.
"You're okay, buddy, you're okay," he told her gently. The way he comforted her reminded her of the way he would do so whenever she injured herself when she was younger. His presence alone gave her strength and made her forget the fear that came along with the memory of the accident.
She sniffled before smiling at her brother, "Can you help me sit up, please?"
"Of course, hold on," [y/b/n] replied as he slid his hands underneath her back and gently lifted her into a seating position. Then, while holding her with one of his arm around her shoulders, he arranged the pillows behind her back so that she could sit comfortably. "This okay?"
"Yes, thank you," she sighed and her brother sat next to her, taking her hands in his. "Are Mom and Dad here too?"
"They're actually on their way here as we speak," he answered. "I sent them home last night because I figured they could use some rest."
"You should've gone home too," [Y/N] spoke, scanning the tired features of her brother's face. "Did you get any sleep last night?"
"Sleep was the last thing on any of our minds, buddy," [y/b/n] shook his head, closing his eyes for a brief moment. Thinking back to the previous night, where he had almost lost his baby sister, only brought him complete distress. "Though I sent Mom and Dad home to get some rest, they didn't. All they did was call and text me, asking if you had woken up or not. Besides, there was no way I was leaving you along here while the monster who did this to you is still out there."
"I'm so sorry for worrying all of you," [Y/N] whispered, tears gathering in her eyes again.
"It's not your fault, kiddo," her brother's reply was instant. "But, what happened last night, [y/n/n]? The police told us that it was a hit and run."
"I think that's what happened," [Y/N] answered slowly. Her brother knew her so well and it was very difficult for her to tell him only half of the truth while looking into his eyes. "Hanna and Mona had a small misunderstanding, I guess. Then, Mona disinvited Hanna from her birthday party and well, Hanna snuck in. Aria, Emily, Spencer and I went to meet her in the parking lot. I was crossing the parking lot first to catch up to Hanna when the car came out of nowhere."
"I swear when they catch that monster, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure they stay locked up for a very long time," [y/b/n] muttered, anger lacing his tone.
"[y/b/n]?" [Y/N] called and his eyes instantly softened, looking at her. "I'm okay. I mean, the broken leg sucks but I'm going to be alright."
Her brother smiled at her lovingly at her attempt to comfort him and pulled her into his arms, hugging her close. [Y/N] wrapped her arms around him, feeling safe and protected after the nightmare she just survived.
They were interrupted when there was a knock on the door. The sibling pair pulled away from each other and turned towards the doorway. The door was slowly pushed open and their parents entered the room, making [Y/N] smile instantly. Her parents visibly breathed out in relief at the sight of her before returning her smile.
It wasn’t long before they reached her and gathered in her in their warm embrace. Her brother, meanwhile, stepped back to let the parents have a moment with his little sister.
"You're okay," [y/m/n] whispered, cupping [Y/N]'s cheeks in her hands, her teary eyes scanning over her daughter.
"I’m okay," [Y/N] nodded, her own tears slipping out of her eyes. Her attention turned to her dad when he caressed her hair, his worried gaze set on the wound on her forehead.
"When they find the lowlife who did this to you, I'm gonna kill them," he said quietly.
"[y/b/n] said he's gonna make sure they stay locked up for a long time," [Y/N] said with a chuckle, hoping to lessen her parents' worry over her.
"I guess that's an option too," her dad replied with a shrug, causing [Y/N] to laugh.
Seeing her smile was more than enough for her family and they took her in their loving embrace again, thanking the stars that, despite her injuries, she was alright.
...
It was a little later in the morning and [Y/N]'s mother kept her company. Her dad was out in the hallway on a call while her brother had gone home to freshen up.
Even before the knock came, [Y/N] and her mom both heard familiar voices and the sound of rushed footsteps.
"I wonder who that could be," [y/m/n] said with a teasing smile before moving to open the door. "Hi, girls."
"Hi, Mrs. [y/l/n]," [Y/N] heard her friends greet before she saw them.
"Is [y/n/n] awake? Can we see her?" Hanna asked.
"She is and of course," [y/m/n] replied, opening the door further for her daughter's friends.
[Y/N] smiled when she saw Hanna first and the latter didn't waste a second before moving towards the bed to hug her injured friend carefully.
"You scared me, [y/n/n]," Hanna whispered with a relieved sigh, leaning her head against [Y/N]'s.
"I'm alright, Hanna banana," she replied, rubbing Hanna's back to comfort her.
"I'll give you girls some time," [y/m/n] said, moving to exit the room. "Call me if you need anything, okay? I'll be right out here."
"Of course," Spencer replied. "Thank you, Mrs. [y/l/n]."
[Y/M/N] smiled at them before stepping out of the room and closing the door. Over Hanna's shoulder, [Y/N] passed a smile to her other friends, who returned the gesture and waited patiently. They knew that [Y/N] and Hanna were the closest. The two were friends even before they met Alison and their bond only grew stronger after Ali's disappearance while the rest of them drifted apart.
[Y/N] frowned when she heard Hanna sniffle and pulled back from the hug. Hanna wiped away her tears before looking at [Y/N].
"Han," the injured girl whispered, taking in the blonde's red-rimmed eyes.
"I'm sorry. It's just that you really scared me," replied Hanna.
"No, don't apologize," [Y/N] said back, shaking her head. "I'll be okay, trust me."
Hanna nodded with a small smile and moved aside to let the other girls hug [Y/N]. Once Aria, Emily, and Spencer finished checking up on [Y/N], Hanna was quick to resume her seat next to her best friend.
"Does it hurt?" Emily asked, sitting at the foot of the bed near [Y/N]'s injured leg.
"Yeah, kind of," [Y/N] shrugged and smiled a little as if accepting that the road to recovery was going to be quite long. "So, who is it? Who's A?"
[Y/N] looked at her friends expectantly and frowned when the three girls looked at Hanna in turn.
"Uh, we didn't talk about it last night," Hanna said when [Y/N] looked at her. "I mean, I know who A is but we couldn't focus on it last night without you."
"You guys didn't have to," [Y/N] said softly, feeling touched by her friends' consideration.
"We're in this together, remember?" Aria asked from where she was sitting on [Y/N]'s unoccupied side of the bed.
"Thanks guys," [Y/N] said, squeezing Aria's hand in hers while her other hand was held by Hanna.
"Noel Kahn is A," Hanna blurted, unable to keep it to herself anymore, and her friends gaped at her.
"What?" Emily questioned just as [Y/N] asked, "Are you sure?"
"Yeah," Hanna nodded in confirmation. "I saw him in the woods and he left an A message."
"You actually saw him leave a message?" Spencer repeated, her posture still laced with shock at the revelation of their tormentor.
"He wrote something on the back of a car window," Hanna spoke slowly, a little hesitant this time.
"Do you know what he wrote?" Emily asked.
Hanna remained silent. [Y/N] didn't know if Emily or Spencer noticed it, but she definitely saw Hanna glance at Aria once before looking away.
"I see you," Aria spoke, gaining her friends' attention from Hanna. Her gaze was on the floor as she fiddled with her fingers nervously and the rest of the girls understood that was the message written on the car.
[Y/N] looked at Hanna first and the latter gave an uncomfortable smile. Hanna didn't want to be the one to reveal the second secret she had discovered last night -- it was totally up to Aria as it involved her. [Y/N], then, looked at Spencer and Emily, who looked as equally confused as her.
"How do you know?" Spencer was the first to question Aria.
"I was in the car," Aria replied quietly.
"Whose car was it?" Emily asked next and Aria sucked in a deep breath.
"Ezra Fitz," the petite girl's answer left her friends baffled except for Hanna.
"Wait, Mr. Fitz?" Spencer asked, her voice a little louder in shock. The judgement in her voice was extremely obvious as well. "Our English teacher?"
Aria gave a short nod and the other three girls looked at Hanna, who nodded in confirmation.
"Aria, you and Mr. Fitz?" [Y/N] asked gently, though she was still in disbelief at the idea that one of her best friends was in a relationship with their English teacher.
Aria simply nodded again in response.
"The call you got at the party?" Emily said, her eyes lighting up at the memory from Mona's birthday party. "That was him, wasn't it?"
"Yeah," Aria said with a heavy sigh and finally looked up at her friends. "Guys, I couldn't tell anyone. I promised Ezra."
"Ezra?" Spencer scoffed. "Wait, this is something that's been going on? You and a teacher?"
"I didn't just get into his car last night, Spence," Aria answered, offended. "Who do you think I am?"
"How long have you been seeing him?" Emily asked, sounding calmer and less judgmental compared to Spencer.
"Since before school started," Aria said.
"Since Labor Day?" [Y/N] asked. "That's when you got back from Iceland, right?"
"Yep," Aria confirmed.
"So, you didn't have a boyfriend in Iceland, then?" Hanna asked, her brows furrowed in confusion.
"I- I did," Aria answered, "But, it's not like that."
"And, why did you get into his car last night?" Spencer questioned Aria and the latter looked uncomfortable with all of the questions being thrown at her.
"Spence, look," [Y/N] interrupted with a sigh, rubbing her forehead. Along with her leg, her head was starting to hurt as well with the tension in the room. "Aria's relationship with Mr. Fitz is the least of our concerns right now. We just found out who A is. What are we gonna do?"
"Okay," Spencer breathed out, nodding, and turned to Hanna. "Han, what exactly did you see again?"
"Well, I saw Aria go into the parked car," Hanna said, her gaze falling on [Y/N]'s injured leg subconsciously. "Then, I saw someone in a black hoodie write something on the back of the car window. When the person turned around, it was Noel."
"So, was he the one who ran me over?" [Y/N] asked. "I couldn't really see the driver."
The girls looked at each other, wondering the same.
"I'm not sure," Hanna answered first.
"It was too dark to see the driver," Emily added.
“Guys, it couldn’t have been Noel,” Aria said suddenly.
“Why do you sound so sure about it?” Spencer asked.
“Because, I saw him too. Well, I didn’t see him write on the back of Ezra’s car,” Aria replied. “But, after [y/n/n] was taken to the hospital, I saw him with the rest of the crowd. I don’t think he could’ve hit her, park the car, and then come back to the site of the accident all within a short amount of time.”
“So, are there two A’s?” [Y/N] asked nervously.
“Like, one is Noel who wrote the message on Mr. Fitz’s car and the other that drove me over?”
“I do not like the sound of that,” Hanna said, leaning her head on [Y/N]’s shoulder.
“None of us do, Han,” Spencer sighed.
Later that afternoon, [Y/N] was re-reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for the nth time when there was a knock on the door of her hospital room.
"Come in," she called and marked the page she was on with her bookmark, leaving the book in her lap for the time being.
Her eyes watched in curiosity as the door slowly opened and she was taken aback when Jason slowly entered the room. He smiled at her and she noticed that he had a small lavender-colored gift bag in his hand.
"Jason?" she asked with a stunned smile.
"Hello, [Y/N]," he greeted, his smile faltering once he took in her bruised form.
"Hi! Come on in," she said and he moved further into the room, moving his eyes away from her leg that rested in a cast.
"Hey," he said in a whisper, standing next to the bed. "How- how are you?"
"I'm doing okay," she answered and he nodded. However, she could see the concern in his green eyes as they scanned over the bandage on her forehead, faint scratches on her arm, and on her injured leg again.
"My god, [Y/N], are you sure you're okay?" he asked, meeting her eyes again.
"I mean, it's not rainbows and unicorns at the moment," she chuckled. "But, I'll be alright."
He breathed out a laugh, shaking his head.
"What is it?" she asked curiously.
"Your positivity," he replied, smiling at her in rather awe. "It's amazing, really. I remember Ali used to go on and on about how you were the most positive out of the powerpuff girls."
"Ali called us powerpuff girls?" [Y/N] asked teasingly.
"Okay, that was me," he said sheepishly. "Sorry."
"Don't be, it's funny," she said, still chuckling before looking down at her lap for a moment. Noticing the book there, she moved it to the table beside her and faced Jason again. "Would you like to have a seat? There's the chair."
"Oh, sure," he replied before picking up the chair that was at the foot of the bed and moving it closer to her. "I met your parents and brother outside, by the way. They seemed busy on the phone."
"Don't remind me," [Y/N] shook her head tiredly. "Somehow the accident ended up on the news and everyone we know have been calling continuously. Mom, Dad, and [y/b/n] were ignoring them, but I asked them to answer the calls and just get it over with, you know?
"Besides, every time they look at me, they get this sad look in their eyes and I feel bad that I gave them this scare."
"Hey, no, it's not your fault that you got hurt," he said gently.
"I just wish I moved out of the car's way when I saw it come at me," [Y/N] said in a small voice. "Instead, I froze on the spot; it was like my brain stopped functioning."
"Do you think that it was an accident?" he asked.
"What?" [Y/N] asked, her heartbeat rising at his intent gaze on her. "I think so. I- I don't see why anyone would want to hit me on purpose."
"I have a feeling that something's going on," he spoke, continuing to look at her. "First, Ali went missing and they found her body literally after a year. Then, we did a memorial for her only for someone to destroy it so- so brutally. Then, when I saw you at the school the other day during the storm, you seemed pretty terrified after getting a text and literally flew out of the room. Now, someone ran you over with their car, [Y/N]. All of these can't be a coincidence, can they?"
"I- I don't know what to tell you, Jason," she replied with a soft sigh. She truly didn't and this topic made her feel uneasy. She had a feeling A was behind all of these incidents, but she couldn't tell Jason about them. She couldn't possibly put Jason in A's radar.
"[Y/N], please," he pleaded in a low voice. "Is there something going on? Is someone bothering you and your friends? Was someone trying to hurt Ali?"
"I really don't know," she answered helplessly and he let out a defeated sigh, dropping his gaze from hers. "If something was going on, especially if it was related to Ali, I would let you know. I promise."
He looked at her again in silence as if analyzing whether she was telling the truth or not. [Y/N] wasn't sure what he saw, but eventually, he looked convinced by her words.
"Thank you. Oh, and here," he said, handing her the small gift bag he had brought. "This is for you. It's a little get well soon present."
"Thank you," she replied, keeping the bag in her lap. "You know, you didn't have to."
"I wanted to," he shrugged, smiling.
"Well, thanks again," she replied, feeling her heart warm at his sweet gesture. She looked at the bag, but she couldn't see the contents in it due to the tissue papers he had placed in it. "What's in here?"
"Go ahead and look," he chuckled, causing her to grin sheepishly. However, she did as he said and moved the tissue papers to the side of the bag and gasped, her eyes widening.
"Oh my goodness!" she exclaimed in a whisper, taking the small otter plush toy out of the bag. She held it in both of her hands, gazing at it with heart eyes.
"Jason," she called, turning to him, and he was already looking at her with an affectionate smile. He found her reaction to the simple gift so cute and pure. "This is adorable! Thank you so much! How'd you know I like otters?"
"Guess," he said with a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Ali?" she asked and he confirmed with a nod. She was almost in disbelief at that idea that Ali had talked about them so much.
"You girls are all that she talked about most of the time," he shared with a sad but fond smile on his lips and she returned it.
"Thank you again," she said softly while hugging the otter close to her heart. "I love this little guy so much already."
"You're very welcome," he couldn't help but laugh at her words. The way she found happiness in the smallest of things made him adore her further. He didn't think the gift was a big deal. However, seeing the way she was holding the plush toy as if it was a prized possession warmed his heart and he was glad that at times he had paid attention to Ali's tales about her friends.
"So, I should get going now," he said in a low voice, regretting the words that left his lips.
"Oh, okay," she replied in an equally low voice that made him wonder if she was going to miss him as much as he would miss her the moment they would be away from each other. "Are you going to stick around here for a while?"
Was that hope he heard in her voice?
He shook away his mind voice and looked at her with guilt.
"I'm actually leaving town," he said, making her heart drop.
"Oh," a barely audible whisper was all she could manager. She cleared her throat before speaking again. "When do you leave?"
"Later today," he answered. "I'll be back, though. Soon, hopefully. Sorry, I don't mean to drop all this on you."
"No, don't be," she shook her head, a small smile stretching her lips in order to reassure him. "Are you driving?"
"Yes," he nodded.
"Drive safe, okay?" she said.
"Of course," he smiled at her. "And, you take care of yourself, alright?"
"I will," she nodded.
"And, please let me know if…" he trailed off and she understood perfectly.
"I will, Jason," there was something in her voice that made him trust her words and he nodded at her gratefully.
With one last smile, he got up and moved the chair he was sitting on to its previous position by the foot of the bed. He once again moved closer to [Y/N] to say his goodbyes. For now.
"I guess this is goodbye," he said.
"I believe in see you laters," she chuckled, making him do the same. "Thank you for visiting me and for the gifts. I appreciate it."
"Anytime, [Y/N]," he replied before his gaze dropped from her for few moments before returning back to hers. "Is it okay if I give you a hug?"
"Yes," she whispered after a few moments, subconsciously opening her arms for him. Jason leaned down and he was as gentle as possible as he held her in his arms. One of his hands cradled the back of her head against his shoulder and the other wrapped around her shoulders. [Y/N] slowly brought her arms around him and rested them on his shoulder blades.
Jason was the first to pull back from the hug, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. [Y/N] moved her hands back in her lap and smiled up at him as he looked at her.
"I'm so glad you're okay," he told her quietly, his hand holding the side of her head for a few more seconds before he stepped back, creating a little distance between them. "Please stay safe."
"I will," she replied in an equally quiet voice. "You too."
He nodded at her and slowly walked backwards before stopping at the door.
"See you later, [Y/N]," he said with a smile, which she returned instantly.
"See you later, Jason," she said and watched as he stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him.
[Y/N] let out a small sigh and looked down at the otter plush, smiling fondly at it. Her heart felt a little heavy at the thought that Jason would be miles away from Rosewood, from her, soon. At the same time, his word of coming back soon made her feel relieved.

ᕚ---ᕘ
The streets were dark and deserted as you made your way home from visiting your possibly soon university. You were exhausted from the energy, hustle and bustle of campus life and longed for a quiet evening with Emily. She was probably already waiting for you at your family home, and you were really looking forward to spending the rest of the night with her, probably with a nice hot bath and a relaxing episode of your favorite series.
Tapping the steering wheel and whistling softly to the gentle tune from the radio, the silence was broken by the sound of screeching tires and a car getting dangerously close to you. You tried to stay calm as the car sped up and soon pulled alongside you in the opposite lane. You gripped the coating layer of the steering wheel, your knuckles already turning white as you tried to slow down. You thought maybe the person was just trying to get ahead of you. But it was too late, the car rammed you on the left rear of the vehicle and threw you against the guardrail.
You came to a stop with a thud. The accident wasn't serious, but you felt a sharp pain in your side as you sat up in your seat and watched as the other driver's car came to an abrupt stop. As you tried to calm down and get your bearings, you saw a dark figure get out of the black. Panic gripped you as you realized you were dealing with "A" who had been putting pressure on you and your friend group for years and so, in a desperate attempt to get help, you searched for your phone on the passenger side to make one last call.
Your fingers trembled in fear as you dialed Spencer's number. The phone rang once, twice, and you were startled as a shadow moved into your vision. “A” came walking towards you with slow steps. When you finally heard your sister's voice on the other end, you couldn't hold back your emotions anymore.
"Emily, please... help me," you whispered in a choked voice before your words were drowned out by a loud crash and a high-pitched scream. An iron bar had hit your windshield and gave way under the pressure. "Y/n, what's wrong? Where are you?" your girlfriend shouted, her voice sounding desperate and hysterically when she heard the ominious shattering of glass.
Her brow was furrowed as she threw the history class index cards on the table, standing up immediately to make way for her panic. Spencer, Hanna and Aria stood around her, their faces marked with fear and worry. "Em, I-I don't know how much time I have left in which I can speak. A is here to get me.“
You heard the girls' voices distorted through the phone and tears welled up in your eyes as you glanced nervously out of the broken windbreak. You sobbed as she tried to stay calm on the phone, even though she was already panicking inside, not being able to shake the uneasy feeling that you were in great danger. It gnawed at her and sent a cold shiver down her spine. "I don't know where he/she/it will take me. I'm scared, Em.."
Another shattering of the window in the passenger seat made you jump and a loud scream of your name came through the phone, followed by the voices of Hanna, Aria and Spencer, who were screaming in pure fear. "Y/n, listen, we'll find you, okay? Stay calm and do everything A tells you to survive!" Aria spoke, her voice shaking.
You felt how time was running out and the shadow under the hood was crowding you. There was no time to run away, especially since the stabbing pain wouldn't allow it. You shook your head. "You won't be able to find me, just like we haven't been able to find A all these years. Caleb will track my phone and then there will be no further trace of me. I will disappear.“ you spoke carefully, unbuckling your seatbelt and moving wildly looking around - the dark figure had disappeared from your view. "Emily.. I love you," you whispered in a broken voice, a stream of tears running down your cheeks.
“I love you too, sweetie,” the person addressed immediately replied with a halting voice, swallowing the lump in her throat as she looked to Spencer for help. Her mind was racing as she tried to think of a way out of this nightmarish situation. „I will find you. I will bring you back to me. I promise you!" you nodded involuntarily to yourself, listening to the voices of your friends encouraging you and promising to save you. But you also felt your strength fading, and you knew it wouldn't be long before something would happen that would end your life.
"Spencer, Hanna, Aria.." you whispered one last time and wiped your damp cheeks. "I-I.. thank you.. for everything."
Before anyone could answer, the door to your car was thrown open and you were pulled roughly out of the vehicle by the collar of your shirt. Your senses raged with fear as you felt a strong arm drape over your middle. Your screams were muffled by a rag held over your mouth as you listened tot he desperate cries of the girls.
The world around you blurred and the darkness started to surround you. You didn't know why you had to be the victim. But you knew you had to fear for your life.
ᕚ---ᕘ
Two weeks had passed since you were kidnapped, and your friends' desperation grew with each passing day. The girls and their boyfriends had searched tirelessly for clues, but so far without success. Every day that you weren't found felt like an eternity to Emily.
Everyone had vowed not to give up, and they worked day and night to pursue every lead they could find. They searched the city and checked every place outside of Rosewood where they thought "A" might be holding you.
Then, finally, after countless hours of searching, they came across a promising lead. Mona had given them a tip that led them to an abandoned place on the outskirts of New York. It was a gloomy place, overgrown with weeds and marked by decay, but they knew they couldn't waste time.
As they walked along the small cobbled path past a house, they immediately felt the weight of the darkness that must reign there. But they did not let their resolve be deterred. Especially not Emily. She ran into the house and searched every room, every corner, every deserted hallway, her heart pounding with fear and hope. But she found nothing.
But as Caleb was about to close the closet, he heard a faint noise from somewhere below him. He followed the whimper and knelt down before feeling the carpet that had been laid out and discovered something underneath it. He picked at the corners of the rancid carpet, tossed it aside and found a hatch that led to an underground cellar. "I have something here!" he shouted and Emily immediately came around the corner, her shaking hands holding onto the hatch and immediately pulling it up.
They carefully descended the creaky ladder steps and when she entered the basement everyone froze in shock. There, in a crummy corner, you sat huddled on the floor, pale and exhausted, but alive. A hint of relief flooded through Emily as she rushed over to you and pulled you tightly into her arms. Spencer couldn't avoid rushing to her sister either.
"You found me," you whispered with a weak smile, your fingers dancing on your lover's cheek while your other hand searched for your sister's. "And we never gave up on you."
They left the scene together. Tobi had already alerted Tanner and some rescue workers, who immediately took you away to look after you. Emily breathed out, close to tears. She finally had you back, even though she thought she had long since lost you.
ᕚ---ᕘ
After your long stay in the hospital, you finally returned home. Walking back to your room felt like a rebirth after all the days of imprisonment and suffering, a return to a place of safety and peace. The air smelled familiar and the warmth of home enveloped you like a blanket of security. A familiar hug that you so desperately needed.
When you took the stairs to your room and shortly afterwards entered it, your breath caught in your throat. The gentle smell of food rubbed under your nose, there were candles everywhere that flickered gently and casted a warm light into the room. A bouquet of colorful flowers sat on your bedside table and your eyes widened in surprise as you saw how Emily had transformed the room into a romantic paradise.
"Em...that's incredible." you breathed as you fully entered it and closed the door behind you. Your heart felt warm and light as she felt the love Emily had put into this surprise. Your lover stepped out from the shadows smiling, her eyes shining with love and affection. "Welcome home, my love." She said quietly and moved closer to you to press a tender kiss on your lips.
“This is... this is beautiful,” you whispered as tears of gratitude sparkled in your eyes. She gently took you in her arms and hugged you tightly. "I wanted you to feel loved as soon as you got home." She spoke quietly and led you to your balcony, where you sat down at the small table and began to enjoy the delicious meal that Emily had lovingly prepared. You couldn't believe how much effort she had put into making you happy. Every bite was like a declaration of love and you thanked the stars for the wonderful woman who was by your side.
“Thank you for always being there for me,” you spoke carefully, ruining the silence that had settled between the two of you. "Forever, don't you remember?" she asked, pulling up her sleeve. The colorful bracelet you had made for her years ago, before your relationship, was still attached to her wrist.
You smiled and pulled her towards you with a wave of your hand to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.
After dinner you relaxed on the balcony lounger, wrapped in blankets and surrounded by stars. Emily cared for you lovingly, gently stroking your hair and whispering words of love and care to you. "I'm so grateful you're home," she spoke softly, holding you tighter against her front. "I couldn't imagine a better place to be." You replied and smiled happily, leaning your head back on her chest and closing your eyes.
In that moment, your home felt not just like a place, but like the safest and most beautiful place in the world. crAcked: Chapter 2
Characters: Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Emily Fields, Alison DiLaurentis, Mike Montgomery, Byron Montgomery, Ella Montgomery, Darren Wilden, Jenna Marshall, Toby Cavanaugh, Noel Kahn, Ezra Fitz
TW: Grooming, fire, violence, death
Word Count: 1,861
Author's Note: This is a PLL fanfic that I mainly started writing for myself. It's been a hot sec since I've posted chapter 1 but I finally mustered up the motivation to write chapter 2. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
In all the chaos of Alison's funeral and that scummy cop, Wilden, vaguely threatening Aria and her friends, the small brunette had almost completely forgotten all about how Ezra Fitz had turned up at Ali's funeral. If Aria hadn't been so damn captivated by him, she might've stopped to ask herself why exactly a teacher that had never even met Alison was attending her funeral services. Sure, maybe he wanted to support his students--especially one student in particular--but still, why attend a funeral for someone you'd never even laid eyes upon?
The two of them had only had a brief moment to talk but the short conversation left Aria with more questions than answers. He'd apologized for "being a jerk" and he'd insisted that he cared about her. While she thought it was sweet, more than anything, it just left her feeling very lost.
So lost, in fact, that she hadn't even heard Spencer at first as they were sitting at the Rosewood Grill after the funeral. "Hello, earth to Aria," the brains of the group said. "Do you think Wilden knows about... You know, the...Jenna thing?" Aria let out a deep sigh and ran a hand through her hair. God, I thought we were fucking done with the Jenna thing, she thought to herself. "I don't know, guys. I mean... How could he know? We all promised to keep it a secret, after all..."
The Jenna thing, as in when the girls accidentally not so accidentally blinded Jenna Marshall, the new girl in town.
When Jenna first got to Rosewood, her long dark hair and her stunning green eyes had gotten everyone's attention. She was gorgeous and the minute Aria saw her at Noel Kahn's Halloween party, she knew Alison was threatened by her very presence. Not only was she beautiful, but she had made it clear that she was her own person who could make her own friends. Ali didn't like that, not one bit.
So when the blonde got the opportunity to get back at Jenna and her reclusive step-brother, Toby Cavanaugh, Alison wasted no time. Like so many bad memories, Aria could never truly get that night out of her head. It haunted her day and night.
You see, a little over a year ago, the five girls had been gleefully trying on clothes in Emily's bedroom. It was like any other sleepover until suddenly, Alison exclaimed "I can see you!" and raced to the window, pushing Aria out of the way. Ali insisted that she'd seen Toby in the window and that they all needed to go "teach him a lesson." Immediately, Aria had gotten a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She had tried to push back but Alison was not having it. Looking back now, she knew that she should've just stood up to Ali when she had they chance--they all should have.
Before she knew it, they were at the Cavanaughs' garage, hurling a stink bomb through the door and running away. What started out as a harmless little prank quickly turned into a raging fire that permanently blinded Jenna.
"We had the chance to stop Ali that night," Aria said regretfully. Looking at the other girls' faces, they clearly felt just as much as shame about the situation as she did. But what could they do about it now? Surely, they'd be in some sort of legal trouble if the fessed up to Wilden about it, right? And how would he even know in the first place? After all, Ali had gotten Toby to take the blame, somehow...
That night, as Aria was lying in her bed, attempting to sleep, she kept thinking about what Ezra had said to her. His words rang over and over in her head: I care about you, Aria, but this just isn't right. And as much as it felt right to her, maybe he had a point. After all, he was older than her, and wouldn't that make him wiser than her, as well? As she drifted off to sleep, she'd made up her mind. Tomorrow, she was going to nip this in the bud and transfer classes. Besides, with everything going on with her family, that weird cop, and the fact that the whole world now knew that Alison DiLaurentis was dead, she really couldn't handle anything else on her plate.
The next morning before first period, Aria went and sought out Ezra, who was grading papers at his desk. God, he looked so handsome in his tie and button-down shirt. Dammit, Aria, focus, she told herself. You need to do this. Giving a soft nock on the door frame, she said "Hey, can I come in for a second?..."
The young teacher instantly lit up when he saw her face and nodded, beckoning her to come in. Getting up from his desk, he said "Yeah, of course," and walked past her to shut the door behind her. Gingerly, she said "Oh, this will only take a second..." Besides, she didn't want to give people the wrong impression with the door shut--she was ending this and that was that. She took a paper out of her binder and handed it to him. "I'd like to transfer out of your class."
At her words, a look of obvious disappointment crossed his face, which was honestly a bit confusing. "Uh, I totally understand, but, um... I'd hate for you to have to drop the class, especially since we've already started working on our first novel. If you transferred to another class, you'd already be behind..."
Nodding, she said "Yeah, I thought about that, but... I don't know, I just feel like it's the right thing to do..." Looking up at him, he was clearly searching for words to say and he opened his mouth but then closed it again, as if he'd thought of something to say but then changed his mind. "Okay, then I'll go ahead and sign the transfer paper," he said, grabbing the pen off of his desk. "Thank you," she said softly, taking the paper from him and giving him a small smile.
Honestly, she thought he'd look a little more relieved, since he was the one who told her this...thing between them wasn't right. But then again, she couldn't deny that she was at least a little pleased that he wasn't jumping for joy at not having her in his class anymore. Maybe that that meant what he'd said was true--maybe he did really care about her.
Taking the paper back, she said "Thank you, Ez--Mr. Fitz.. I appreciate it." With that, she turned and practically bolted out of the door, sure that she'd change her mind if she stayed just one moment longer. She hurried down to the registrar to turn the paper in before she headed to math class.
However, the transfer was apparently not meant to be. During science class, a student aid had come by her class and delivered her transfer paper with a brand new bright red "DECLINED" stamp on the top of it. Shit, she thought to herself. Is the universe trying to get me to fuck up? Then again...what if this was a good sign from the universe? Perhaps a sign that maybe, just maybe, there really was a chance for her and Ezra?...
When she arrived at English and set the declination on his desk, she could've sworn she saw a small smile perk up at the edge of his lips.
Even though whatever was going on with Aria and Ezra was confusing, being at school was a million times better than being at home, that was for sure. Before Aria had gone away to Radley Iceland, she'd been keeping a huge secret for her dad. It turns out, those rumors about him sleeping with his grad students had turned out to be very true. Aria had seen it with her own eyes and she knew she'd never be able to forget that image of his father kissing another woman in the back of his car for as long as she lived.
At the time, he'd begged her to keep it a secret. Aria's father had told her that if she told her mom, their family would fall apart. She could still hear her own words in her head when she'd begrudgingly agreed to pretend as if nothing was wrong. Through her tears, she'd said to her father's face, "I don't think I'm ever going to be able to forgive you for this."
And she'd meant what she said. From the moment she'd gotten back from her sabbatical, she'd been short with her father whenever he attempted to speak with her. After all, over the past year, she'd had a lot of time to think about the situation and she'd grown incredibly resentful of her father. How could he have put all of that pressure on his own daughter? And all to keep his dirty secret of infidelity? What a fucking coward. What a fucking piss poor excuse for a father.
So on Saturday afternoon, when she arrived home from a coffee run, she didn't know what to say when her father confronted her about her attitude. "You're not very good at hiding your feelings, Aria. And your mother knows that something's up. You need to get past this."
"I need to get past this? I need to get past the fact that I caught you cheating on Mom? I need to get past the fact that you fucking begged me to keep that secret for you?" She shook her head incredulously. "You've got to be fucking joking." Her father looked hurt and taken aback by her harsh words but she couldn't hep herself. What else was she supposed to say? How could he expect her to feel any other way?
Still, she wasn't done yet. "Are you still seeing her?" she asked, her words as sharp as knife. Her father shook his head and said "What? Why would you even ask me that?"
"Answer the question, Dad. Are you still seeing her?"
He shook his head, but Aria really didn't know whether to believe him or not. "No, I am not seeing her. I told you, I'm done with that. I'm done with her. All I care about is our family." Yeah, fucking sure, she thought to herself.
"Whatever, Dad," Aria said with a heavy sigh, the feeling of exhaustion suddenly taking over her body. She couldn't keep doing this, she couldn't keep holding up all this weight on her own two shoulders. But, then again, she couldn't break her mother's heart like that--or her little brother's. She had to protect her family, that was her job. It was part of the reason why she'd done what she'd done that night...
As she started to walk away, her father said "Aria, where are you going? I'm not finished with this conversation."
"Well, I am," she snapped back. She turned away from her father and swiftly walked up the stairs. She'd be fucking damned if she let him see her cry again. She couldn't give him that kind of power over her.

“We can go back. You can be you again. I’ll be me. Just like before.”
There’s no mistaking the slackening of “Courtney’s” grasp now. “You’d switch back?” she asks. Her voice is full of suspicion. “Just like that?”
Ali takes a deep breath, feels her lungs fill up with air. The rest of her life - and the length of it - could potential depend on what she says next. “I’d switch back,” she confirms resolutely. “Just like that.”
--
What if Alison and Courtney’s final confrontation had gone differently on that fateful summer night? “Once Upon A Time,” coming soon.

Another “currently thing”… I think I’m gonna make these a series. Anyway…
Currently thinking about writing a story/series about Veronica Hastings x Reader, where reader has had a crush on Mrs. Hastings since high school. They don’t do anything until the friends are graduated from college…
I don’t even want to elaborate anymore because I think it will spoil my ideas but…
Let me know what y’all think. Any additional information/concerns/comments/brainstorming ideas.

—————
“Where is Spencer with my mozzarella sticks?” Hanna groaned, dropping her head on top of her book that laid open in front of her, and [Y/N] chuckled at her friend’s antics.
Currently, [Y/N] and Hanna found themselves in Spencer’s kitchen, sitting at the island, as they studied for the SATs.
“Relax, Han, I’m sure Spence is on her way here,” [Y/N] replied while working on practice questions. “Remember she had to pick up Aria on her way?”
“Yeah, I remember,” Hanna groaned yet again, facing [Y/N] this time with her cheek pressed against the cold page of her book.
[Y/N] was so engrossed in her studying that she didn’t notice the sudden mischief that lit up Hanna’s eyes.
“Until they get here, though,” Hanna began, lifting her head up and sitting straight again with her hands clasped in front of her. “We have something very important to talk about.”
“Talk about what?” [Y/N] asked, her eyes turning suspicious as she noticed the teasing glint in the blonde’s eyes.
“About the past few days,” Hanna replied. “About Jason.”
“What about Jason?” [Y/N] asked, her eyes dropping to the pages in front of her again as she tried to remain nonchalant about the topic.
“[Y/N] [Y/L/N], you know exactly what I’m talking about!” exclaimed Hanna.
“Nope, I don’t,” [Y/N] answered, flipping the pages of the book because she couldn’t concentrate on the practice questions anymore.
Hanna, who understood this, was quick to pull the book away from [Y/N] to which the latter let out a ‘hey!’
“[Y/N/N], did you really not see the way Jason’s eyes lit up when he saw you after he said hi to me the day he came to discuss the memorial with us?” Hanna asked, ignoring her friend’s protest to grab the book again.
“The way he hugged you and to me, it looked like he only let go when you pulled away from him first,” Hanna continued and [Y/N] remained silent, no longer trying to get her book back. “He also stood closer to the side you sat by at this very spot. He was all polite and business until he brought up Ali’s picture, and you replied that it was our favorite. Not to forget, you speaking up totally calmed him down when we pretty much nagged him about why Jenna wanted to speak at the memorial.”
[Y/N] played with her fingers as she processed Hanna’s words. She would be lying if she disagreed with Hanna because she had made the exact same observations about Jason. However, she was afraid to hope that there was more – that Jason somehow returned her feelings.
“Also, let’s not forget the extra large frown on his face when Eric hugged you after the memorial,” Hanna added.
“Wait, what?” [Y/N] asked as this was the first time she was hearing about this.
“Yes!” Hanna exclaimed. “I mean he probably knows Eric’s your ex so he was very much likely jealous.”
“Han,” [Y/N] sighed. “Are you sure you’re not imagining things?”
“Of course not,” replied Hanna. “I’ll have you know that I’m a very observant person.”
[Y/N] couldn’t help but chuckle before sighing.
“Hanna banana, nothing is going to happen between Jason and me. So, you need to forget about Jason and I, and focus on the SATs we have tomorrow.”
“Hey, I’m multitasking!” Hanna reasoned, making [Y/N] laugh yet again.
“But, Han, I’m serious,” [Y/N] replied. “To Jason, I’m prob- definitely just a friend of Ali. One of the powerpuff girls as he used to call us.”
“I’ve just… never seen you look at a guy the way you look at Jason,” Hanna said softly. “I mean I know you were with Eric and you two liked each other, but I don’t know. I’ve always thought you two were better off as friends.”
“That’s why we ended things but we are still good friends,” smiled [Y/N].
“I hate that I’m nagging you about Jason, but I just… I want you to be happy,” Hanna shrugged.
“I am happy, Han,” [Y/N] replied, leaning over and squeezing Hanna’s hand reassuringly.
Before Hanna could say more, they heard the sound of Spencer’s car.
“Let’s not talk about Jason anymore,” [Y/N] said. “Can I have my book back please?”
“Ugh, fine,” Hanna rolled her eyes dramatically and handed [Y/N] her book again. “Our conversation isn't over [Y/N/N]!”
...
The day of the SATs was awful to say the least.
Veronica Hastings had driven Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and [Y/N] to the school. Spencer’s mother didn’t let the girls out of her sight until she verified with someone the test was definitely taking place and not getting canceled due to the storm.
“Test is on today,” a woman, one of the proctors, told Veronica. “Rosewood students should register in the library.”
“Half of the school isn’t even here,” Hanna said.
“And, they may never make it,” Veronica added. “We saw this huge tree down on Sawmill Road and they’ve closed off York street.”
“That wasn’t because of the storm,” a familiar voice replied from behind them and the four  best friends looked at each other in alert. Detective Wilden was the last person they wanted to see at the moment. They, along with Veronica, turned to face him. “York Street has been closed since last night.”
“Why?” Veronica questioned.
“Somebody decided to pay a visit to Alison DiLaurentis’ memorial and destroy it,” Wilden informed them, making the girls’ hearts drop. “Shattered the tiles, broke the bench.”
“What?” Aria and [Y/N] whispered in shock.
“When did this happen?” Spencer questioned.
“We had to cordon off the area, there’s an investigation going on,” Wilden stated, eyeing the girls rather suspiciously.
“Spare them the details,” Veronica interrupted before Wilden could continue. “They’re about to take their SATs.”
“Right,” Wilden nodded, slowly backing away from them. “Good luck on the test, ladies.”
“We should get to the library,” [Y/N] said quietly and walked ahead with Hanna as the others followed.
...
The exam still hadn’t started and [Y/N] found herself alone in the music room after a while. She was seated on the window sill and leaned against the window with her eyes closed as she listened to the sound of the rain and winds.
She felt exhausted with everything.
First, one of her best friends, Alison, disappeared a year ago only to be found murdered a few months back. Then, Jason DiLaurentis – her dead best friend’s brother and the man she had feelings for – returned to town to plan a memorial for Ali. Now, the memorial they put their hearts into was destroyed.
It also didn’t help that Emily was acting pretty strange. She hadn’t joined the rest of the girls the previous night to study for the exam, explaining that she didn’t get out of swim practice till late. Except, when Wilden had questioned about all of their whereabouts, Emily told him that she was with her friends to study for the exam. And, now, Emily was upset with them for questioning her on her lie and had stormed off.
Everything was taking a toll on [Y/N] and all she wanted to do was go home, snuggle in her covers, and shut the world out for a while.
“[Y/N]?”
The call of her name startled her and she snapped her eyes open, turning her head to face the doorway. To her complete surprise, there stood the man, who had captured her thoughts and more.
“Jason?” she asked, her voice indicating her surprise, as she moved her legs down to sit up straight. “What are you doing here?”
“Wanted to have a word with Detective Wilden,” Jason replied, walking further into the room, and his wet raincoat hung on his right arm. “Went to the police station and found out he was here.”
“Jason, it’s terrible out there,” she couldn’t help but say in concern. “You shouldn’t have driven in this weather. It’s dangerous.”
“I know, but I had to,” he said, pausing a foot or two away from where she was sitting. “I don’t know if you heard but Ali’s memorial was destroyed.”
“I heard,” [Y/N] whispered, dropping her gaze from his. “Detective Wilden told us.”
“I’m sorry,” Jason said a few moments later and [Y/N] looked up at him again in question. “I know that you and your friends worked really hard on it. I can only imagine how upset you guys must be.”
[Y/N] shrugged with a sad smile.
“You can sit here if you’d like,” she said when she noticed Jason was still standing in front of her. He complied, sitting next to her with a small ‘thanks.’ “I’m sorry too.”
“For what?” he asked, confused.
“For everything that’s happened since Ali’s disappearance,” [Y/N] replied. “It feels like… she can’t rest.”
“More like Rosewood won’t let her rest,” Jason added with a bitter smile.
“I’m still having a hard time processing this, to be honest,” [Y/N] commented. “Rosewood has always been a strange little town. Yet, it’s hard to believe that such a heartless person is out there who would destroy a memorial.”
“Do you or your friend know of someone who would want to hurt Ali?” Jason asked and [Y/N] froze in her spot. “Someone who must hate Ali to such an extent they’d go as far as to destroy a memorial for her?”
In [Y/N]’s opinion, the list of people who disliked Ali was rather endless. Unfortunately, her deceased best friend wasn’t the nicest person. She had bullied almost half of the school and had made more enemies than friends. One of Ali’s victims definitely had to be their faceless tormentor, A, and they had to be responsible for destroying Alison’s memorial the previous night.
But, of course, she couldn’t exactly reveal all of this to Jason.
“[Y/N]?” Jason called when she didn’t reply for a long time and the girl looked at him again.
“I’m not sure, Jason,” she shook her head. “I have a feeling that there are probably a lot of people out there who didn’t- well, don’t like Ali and us. But, I don’t know anyone specific who could’ve done this.”
Jason seemed convinced and nodded at her answer. He was well-aware of the type of person his little sister was. Yet, it broke his heart that even after her death, someone was holding grudges against her.
“Are you ready for the SATs?” Jason asked [Y/N], changing the topic from Alison.
“I- I guess so,” she shrugged with a low chuckle.
“Hey, it’ll be okay,” he said reassuringly, understanding how stressed she must be feeling. “Don’t think about anything now. Just focus on your exam, okay? I’m sure you’ll do great.”
“Well, it’d be greater if the exam gets canceled,” she said, causing him to laugh. “But, thank you, Jason.”
“Of course,” he said, still smiling. “And, I hope for your sake that the exam does get canceled.”
She laughed, shaking her head, before meeting his eyes. The two of them felt lighter for a moment despite the chaos that awaited them outside the classroom. The moment was soon interrupted when [Y/N]’s phone binged with an incoming text.
“Excuse me,” she said, moving to grab her cell phone from her bag, and Jason nodded, looking away. [Y/N] instantly tensed when she saw that the message was from none other than her and her friends’ faceless tormentor.
Define 'desertion.' Seems like you're about to lose Emily. Who's next? - A.
Just like that, the calmness Jason’s words and presence brought [Y/N] disappeared. She abruptly stood up, startling the man next to her.
“[Y/N]?” Jason called her name and she turned to face him while wearing her backpack. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes,” she breathed out, nodding her head rapidly. “I have to go.”
“Are you sure everything’s okay?” he couldn’t help but ask, having noticed her rapid breathing.
“Yes, yes, I just really have to go,” she replied, already walking towards the door.
“Uh, okay, can I walk with you?” he asked.
“No, no, it’s okay,” she said quickly, already out of the classroom. “I’ll see you later.”
Before he could reply, [Y/N] was already out of his sight. He was confused and a little suspicious by [Y/N]’s sudden anxious state. Soon, he walked out of the class too, hoping to find Wilden and also to check up on [Y/N] if possible too.
...
[Y/N] walked to the locker room to join the rest of her friends, who were all there except for Emily.
“[Y/N/N], where were you?” Hanna asked in concern.
“I- I just needed some time to myself,” [Y/N] answered and her three friends nodded in understanding. “Where’s Emily? Is she okay?”
“She’s right behind you,” Aria replied and [Y/N] turned around to see Emily walk towards them.
“Hey, Em, where were you?” Spencer asked gently when Emily stopped a few feet away from them.
“I was looking for my purse,” replied Emily, not meeting her friends’ eyes.
“Maybe it’s still in the library?” Hanna suggested.
Before the girls could talk further, they were interrupted by Wilden.
“Emily, we found something that belongs to you. Could you come with me, please?”
Without waiting for Emily’s reply, Wilden began to walk off while Emily turned to her friends, looking scared. [Y/N] held Emily’s hand in hers, nodding at her, wordlessly telling her that they were in this together.
“Emily, let’s go,” Wilden pressed sternly and the five girls walked behind him, annoyed and worried.
They followed Wilden to the library and their eyes widened when Wilden stopped by a table, where Emily’s bag sat.
“Perfect, we can all be together for an update,” he said in mock excitement as the girls stood in front of him.
“What’s going on?” Spencer asked first with her arms crossed across her chest. She wasn’t about to let Wilden intimidate her and her friends easily when they did nothing wrong.
“Did you tell your friends where you were last night?” he asked, facing Emily with a smirk. “When you weren’t studying for the test? See, because I got these really interesting photos…”
Wilden passed his phone to the girls and they were shocked to see the pictures of Emily at the site of Alison’s destroyed memorial.
“And, I see that you didn’t get a chance to clean your shoes either,” Wilden stated, looking at Emily’s muddy shoes.
“It wasn’t me, I swear,” Emily said in a shaky voice as tears ran down her cheeks.
“Oh, really? Were you there to cover up Toby’s tracks then?” Wilden questioned sarcastically.
“I found it like that,” Emily continued tearfully. “It was already destroyed when I got there.”
“And, this,” Wilden ignored Emily’s words and pulled out a piece of paper from his coat pocket. “Would you like me to share this with your friends or would you?”
Emily looked horrified and tried to snatch the paper from Wilden, but he held it away from her. Meanwhile, the rest of the four girls looked on, feeling confused and helpless.
“Go ahead and tell them, Emily,” he said with what [Y/N] would call a purely evil smile. “Tell your friends about the angry letter you wrote to Alison.”
“You had no right to read that,” Emily said tearfully, wrapping her arms around herself, [Y/N] instantly side-hugged her as she was standing next to her.
“What’s in the letter, Em?” Spencer asked softly.
“Tell her, Emily,” Wilden snarled. “Tell her how you wanted to punish Alison for rejecting you. Tell her how you felt relieved at her funeral.”
“I went back to the memorial to say that I was sorry,” Emily said as [Y/N] rubbed her back. “I wrote that letter in anger and- and I didn’t mean the horrible things I said to her. I- I loved her as- as more than a friend.”
Emily looked down as she finished speaking, leaving her friends in surprise. They had no idea that Emily was in love with Ali.
[Y/N] held Emily tighter when she felt the latter shake in her arms. Her hatred for Wilden was increasing day by day. She couldn’t believe he would go ahead and reveal such personal information about Emily. It should’ve been totally up to Emily on when or if she would’ve preferred to share this with her friends.
“Give her the letter back or I swear to god–” Hanna demanded, facing Wilden with fiery eyes.
“Sorry, can’t do that,” was Wilden’s smug reply as he kept the letter back in his coat pocket. “We’re not leaving the room until Emily here tells me why she was carrying around pieces of Alison’s memorial!”
“Detective Wilden,” a familiar voice called and their heads turned towards the doorway of the library to see Jason standing there.
He walked further inside the library, towards the detective and his sister’s friends. His eyes were narrowed and suspicious as he looked at the familiar faces gathered there. His suspicion soon shifted to concern when he noticed a teary Emily being held by [Y/N]. He looked at [Y/N] in question while she looked back at him helplessly.
“What’s going on here?” he asked sternly, turning to Wilden. “Shouldn’t they be with the other students?”
“It’s good that you’re here too,” Wilden smirked, taking Emily’s letter to Ali out of his coat pocket again. Then, he proceeded to show Jason the pictures of Emily at Ali’s trashed memorial, the figurines in her bag, and the letter.
“Stop,” [Y/N] interrupted before Wilden could explain the contents of Emily’s letter to Ali. “Jason, Emily didn’t do this, okay? She would never!”
“I believe you, [Y/N],” Jason replied instantly. “Emily or you girls are the last people I would expect to destroy Ali’s memorial.”
“The proof is right here, Jason,” Wilden scoffed in disbelief.
“Just because you can’t find the ones who committed the crime doesn’t mean you can go around and accuse my sister’s friends,” Jason said back. “Besides, you shouldn’t even be talking to these girls without their parents present!”
While Wilden was staring down Jason, Hanna was quick to grab Emily’s letter from his hand before moving back and the detective glared at her.
“Spencer?” another voice called and they turned around to see Veronica Hastings walk into the library, observing the people present there, especially Jason and Wilden rather cautiously.
“Who are you?” Wilden questioned, annoyed. He was already in a foul mood as Jason hadn’t believed his accusations against Emily.
Veronica was not at all fazed by the detective’s rude tone and her face was a mask of calm as she came to stand next to Spencer.
“Her mother,” she replied simply before her eyes fell on a crying Emily, then she turned to her daughter. “Honey, why is she crying?”
“Detective Wilden accused her of killing Alison,” Spencer replied.
“What?” Veronica asked, baffled.
“He also went through her purse and continued to accuse her,” Aria added.
“Hold on, you’re questioning minors without an adult?” Veronica questioned the detective angrily. “What police department do you work for? What century are you in?”
In the next few minutes, Veronica Hastings successfully shut Wilden’s mouth, causing him to leave the library in irritation while she proceeded to take the girls back to the locker room.
[Y/N] slowly trailed behind her friends and Spencer’s mom. She knew Jason was standing behind them and could feel his eyes on her. A part of her wanted to thank him for standing up to Wilden for her friends and her, while the other part was nervous to do so with a mini audience.
With these thoughts swirling in her head, she was already outside the library when a hand held hers, stopping her. She looked to her right to see Hanna giving her an understanding smile.
“Go talk to him,” she said softly. She glanced at Aria, Emily, Spencer and Veronica, who were walking ahead of them.
“Han,” [Y/N] protested weakly.
“Go, I’ll cover for you,” Hanna interrupted. “Just be quick.”
“Thanks, Han,” [Y/N] said before turning around and walking to the library again. Once she reached inside, she saw Jason still standing in the same spot, staring at the ground and lost in his thoughts.
“Jason?” she called softly, not wanting to startle him.
He looked up at her, surprise evident in his eyes.
“[Y/N]? Is everything okay?” he asked in concern, walking towards her and she met him in the middle of the library.
“Yes, yes,” she breathed out, nervously fiddling with her fingers as her gaze moved around the library for a few moments before finally meeting his attentive, green orbs. “I just wanted to thank you. For standing up to Wilden for Emily… and the rest of us.”
His lips pulled into a small smile as he looked at her.
“You don’t have to thank me,” he replied, shaking his head. “Wilden had no right to accuse Emily and intimidate you girls.”
“We’re kinda used to it by now,” [Y/N] shrugged with a humorless chuckle and Jason’s smile faded.
“Has he been bothering you and your friends?” he asked, a protective stance taking over him. “Do you want me to file a complaint against him?”
“No, Jason, don’t worry about it,” she shook her head. “I’m sure Mrs. Hastings scared him enough. You saw the way he kinda ran out of here, right?”
“Yes, but still…” he sighed.
“I’m sure he won’t bother us anymore,” she said, smiling reassuringly at him.
“Okay, I believe you,” he finally nodded, smiling back at her.
“I should go now,” she said, slowly walking backwards. “Thank you again.”
“Anytime, [Y/N],” he answered and she gave him one final smile before walking out of the library.
Once [Y/N] was out of his sight, Jason sighed and looked down at the carpeted floor of the library, wondering if it was right to feel the way he did for his deceased sister’s best friend.

You did not remember exactly when the sickness had started to hold your body in captivity and destroy your entire life, but it used to come with the stress of A and their sick and twisted games. Now, you only felt relief whenever you could hunger your problems away, taking all the imperfect things of your body and starving them away.
It is the rumor mill and the people whispering behind your back that have been brewing since you were kidnapped and resurfaced. Since then, you hid into your clothes that swallowed you whole. Sometimes, you stood completely naked in front of your bathroom mirror and hugged your body, silently pleading to yourself to finally be perfect. Maybe if you were just a little lighter, A would stop putting you down.
And like so many times lately, you lay on your bed, your hands firmly placed on your growling stomach and your fingers brushing your ribs with your fingers absentmindedly. -Since you have been back home, you have gained enough weight to support an entire family, piggy.- Was the anonymous sender's last message to you and left you shrugging as you repeated the number that your scale spat out less than a few minutes ago.
For days you had not eaten more than measly portions of fruit, eggs or vegetables, which did not even provided your brain with the nutrients it needed. You had given up eating lunch with the girls, refused to eat at the breakfast table of your family home. The taste of the bitter coffee that Spencer brought you to school every morning was also starting to bother you and nearly made you sick.
And then there was Spencer Hastings which knew about your struggle with food. The person, who cuddles you during movie nights when you are cold from not eating a lot during the day, and does not mind if you refuse to eat big portions, if you ate at least small things in her presence. If she had learned one thing, it was not to push you but to give you space and take your own pace to improve.
Sometimes you thought to yourself that she did not care or took it seriously. She was too busy clarifying the person hiding behind an annoying letter in an alphabet. But you were wrong. So wrong. The brunette was more than just worried, paying attention to every little thing you ate. And sometimes Spencer was frightened about it.
Hunger took over and the aching stomach put you in a fetal position. With shaky hands, you fumbled around on your bedside table to look at your phone and manage to distract yourself, until you saw your best friend standing in the doorway. "Please, do not say anything. I know I am taking steps backwards," you whispered.
Spencer did not utter a single words as she walked towards you and gently pulled your frail figure into her arms. She kissed your hair and softly rocked you back and forth as you let your tears flow freely onto her shirt.
The two of you went to therapy sessions together with Dr. Sullivan, she did not force you in any way. You alone had the idea, but you asked her for support, which she was happy to give you. You did not want to disappoint her, as she was one of your best friends and a rock in the surf who enriched your life. Spencer knew how you felt, assured you that you would never disappoint her and you believed her by the beautiful smile that graced her lips.
"Can you please eat something small for me? An apple maybe?" She asked cautiously, afraid that she had ruined the moment and pissed you off. But she did not, instead you nodded into her chest and pulled away from her which she did not expected at all. "Very good, I will get you one quickly. Do not move."
The brunette quickly ran down the stairs and you were worried for a moment that she would break her legs at that speed in the dark. But she appeared back in your room without any injuries in no time and took her usual spot on your bed.
She held the apple in front of you and you swallowed hard before unceremoniously bringing it into your own hand and taking a small bite out of it. You found yourself feeling the food move into your stomach, hating the feeling of instant weight gain. The desire of hiding was great as your stomach slowly expanded and the doubt crept it. It was a constant battle. But the brunette never judged you for it.
"Thank you for trying to fix me," you whispered into the dark of the night, her arms firmly around your body as she leaned against the headboard of your bed. Spencer involuntarily pulled you closer to her and kissed your temple. Her head rested on yours, occasionally checking the mirror to see if you were eating. "You are trying to restore yourself, I am just your little support. You do not need me."
You did not know what to say to that, so you fell silent, but thought about the line she had uttered. This time the brunette was wrong, you needed her more than you would ever admit. The second time you started crying that night was not because you were hungry, but rather for the girl who you had become- so terrified of loving yourself.
“Hey do not cry,” she hummed quietly to herself, pulling your face up towards her. The pads of her thumbs wiped the salty tears from your face as her eyes lost in yours. Spencer was protective of you, knowing that all she could do was be there for you and pick you up when you could not do it yourself. You had to fight for yourself and stop the evil voices in your head from A telling you negative things about yourself. You were not ugly or fat like you thought. In her eyes, you were the most perfect person in the world and she loved you just the way you were.
"You are beautiful and we can do this, together." her voice was thick with emotion and the faint sobbing of the night echoed off the cold walls of your room. Despite the dark and heavyhearted atmosphere, something had changed inside both of you. You wanted to change, wanted to become a person who accepted herself and proudly loved her body. Not just for her, but for you.
Spencer, on the other hand, understood that after that evening, her feelings were not just based on friendship, but became more sensitive. Her heart loved you in good and bad times and she would fight with you, no matter what.

Author's Note: This is a PLL fanfic that I mainly started writing for myself. I'm a die hard PLL fan but, like a lot of other people, I was thoroughly disappointed with a lot of their choices so I decided to try my hand at writing what I wanted to happen in the story. I've never written fanfic, as most of my writing experience has been via Tumblr rp's but I thought I'd give this a try!
Tumblr media
September 1st, 2009. That was a night that Aria Montgomery would never forget, not for as long as she lived. That was the night that everything had changed.
It’d be silly to ever think that she could erase those memories from her brain, so she didn’t even try. Instead, she had decided to accept it–after all, what else was there to do? Things had happened–things that were never supposed to happen. Yet, the events of that September night had changed everything. As Lady Macbeth famously said, “What is done cannot be undone.”
By sunrise, the whole town of Rosewood knew that blonde bombshell queen bee Alison DiLaurentis was missing and nothing would ever be the same again.
Even now, after a year had passed, Aria was still unsure about how she felt about the entire situation. As she unpacked her boxes and placed her books back in their rightful place, she thought about everything that had happened and the impact her choices had had upon everyone.
One thing was for certain–she was grateful to be back in her own bedroom. The warm, dark wood of her bedroom floor and bed frame were certainly much cozier than the cold, white walls she had grown accustomed to this past year. It felt good to be back at home again.
Of course, to the outside world, she’d been away on a special study abroad program in Iceland this past year, an incredible opportunity that had happened to arise in Aria’s time of need. Her little brother, Mike, had even agreed to try to keep her Facebook page updated with beautiful pictures of the stunning fjords of Reykjavik. However, the truth of Aria’s whereabouts were much more…complicated, per se, than a study abroad trip to Iceland.
She’d spent this past year locked away hiding away in Radley Medical Center, trying to repair her fragmented mental state. After September 1st, it hadn’t taken very long at all for her parents, Byron and Ella, to figure out that her best friend’s friend’s disappearance had taken a serious toll on her mental health. As soon as the “MISSING PERSON” fliers went up, Aria just about lost it. After attempting to take her own life near the end of September 2009, her parents felt as if they had no other choice but to try and get her the help that she needed.
However, in the town of Rosewood, being “mentally ill” was not acceptable, or even relatable–sure, everyone had their own struggles but you kept that quiet and to yourself. It was the “polite” thing to do. Besides, after Aria had woken up in a hospital room, realizing her attempt had been unsuccessful, she couldn’t face her friends–hell, it was nearly impossible to face her own family, especially her little brother. Therefore, it was decided: Aria would go to Radley Medical Center in order to heal, and no one would ever know. To the outside world, she’d be experiencing an incredible opportunity overseas in Iceland and none would be the wiser.
It was quite the ruse and honestly, her parents had been a little unsure about the entire thing. Sure, people who were open about their family problems were judged harshly in Rosewood but who even cared about petty scrutiny and gossip if their daughter wasn’t okay? But it was Aria that had begged her parents to keep the truth a secret, only letting the principal of Rosewood High School know what was actually going on so she could continue her studies.
Now, after nearly twelve straight months of intensive therapy and “rest,” Aria was ready to return to the real world of Rosewood and continue on with her life. Still, the night of September 1st, 2009 still haunted her–more than anyone would ever know.
In just a few weeks–and still, years from now–the town of Rosewood would be full of gossip: gossip about a particularly handsome new teacher and his apparent penchant for underage girls. Yes, by now, it’s no secret that Ezra Fitz had been taken with Aria Montgomery when they first met at the Hollis Pub the day before school started. However, what a lot of people don’t mention is how Ezra was able to manipulate his way into Aria’s life and strike when she was most vulnerable.
You’ll come to find very soon that everyone in the town of Rosewood has flaws and secrets–absolutely everyone. But some things are more forgivable than others. And what was unconditionally unforgivable was a grown man preying on the innocent young girls of Rosewood High. Ezra had zeroed in on Aria and was just waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce.
After all, Ezra was already well aware of Aria’s own secret–well, at least one of them. You see, during his junior and senior year at Hollis, he had heard rumors about Professor Montgomery and one of his grad students. Now, Ezra didn’t usually listen to gossip–he believed himself to be above all of that. However, it had become rather difficult to simply ignore the rumors about a professor taking advantage of one of his students. Though he’d never actually had a class with Professor Montgomery, he knew of him and figured that the rumors were probably true.
Once he put two and two together–that Aria was the daughter of Bryon Montgomery–he knew that he had an in. He was aware that it was rather ironic. But this was different, he told himself. Ezra knew she was in a susceptible position–she needed guidance, someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on. That’s what Ezra told himself and that’s what he set out to do. Truthfully, as cunning as she was, Aria never stood a chance against someone so sinister.
However, that didn’t mean that Aria didn’t have her own ammunition. Sure, her family was holding on by a thread–but the other girls had their own secrets, too. They always had. Luckily, Aria had always been incredibly observant. Though she could certainly have her moments of outspokenness, she also knew how to sit back and listen. One could learn a lot of information when they were simply listening.
Take Hanna Marin, for example. Poor little Hefty Hanna–Aria had always detested that nickname that Alison had placed upon Hanna’s head. It was cruel and unnecessary. But Alison was the queen bee and whatever she said simply…was. However, anyone with eyes could see the toll that it took on Hanna. Aria remembered that one time, during a sleepover, the girls had been enjoying chick flicks and ice cream. They had been watching Mean Girls, one of Alison’s favorites. Aria always assumed it was because she viewed herself as Regina George.
Just before the Burn Book fight scene started–arguably one of the best scenes in the film–Hanna had gotten up to go to the bathroom. Aria thought it a bit odd but continued watching and laughing along with the other girls. But the minutes continued to pass and Hanna still wasn’t back. Curious, Aria mentioned checking on Hanna and got up off the couch and headed to the bathroom, her feet padding on the hardwood floor. When she got to the bathroom door, the unmistakable sounds of retching came from the other side of the door. Aria gave a small knock on the door. “Hanna?... Are you okay?” Hanna cleared her throat and quickly said “Yeah, I’m fine. I’ll be right out.”
Sure, Aria probably should’ve said something about it–but what could she say? Hanna was clearly embarrassed, you could hear it in her voice. Wouldn’t it just make it worse to question her about it? Aria tried to tell herself that maybe Hanna’s stomach had just been acting up but deep down, she knew the truth. She knew how Alison made Hanna feel like shit about her body–honestly, it wasn’t very surprising that Hanna would attempt to find comfort in bingeing and purging. It made Aria’s heart sink but what else could she do?
As far as Spencer and Emily went, their secrets weren’t too difficult to figure out, either. Really, all you had to do was have eyes. The way Spencer so desperately wanted to be like her older sister, Melissa, was obvious to everyone. On top of that, the brains of their group suddenly seemed to become a brainless lovestruck girl whenever her sister’s skeezy boyfriend, Ian, walked into the room. He was not only her field hockey coach but, as everyone figured, most likely her future brother-in-law as well. However, no one could deny the brunette’s heart eyes whenever Ian cracked a subpar joke.
Emily was somehow even more obvious. Between the odd comments from Alison and the way you could practically feel Emily’s giddiness radiating from her every time the blonde bombshell simply spoke, it was clear to anyone with a brain that Emily was in love with Alison. Not to mention the time that Aria had accidentally overheard one of their conversations during another infamous sleepover. She’d forgotten her phone in Emily’s room and when she was approaching the doorway, she overheard the distinct sing-song sweetness of Alison’s voice. It was the voice she used whenever she really, really wanted something
“Look, Em, I’m sorry that I was so mean to you the other day in the locker room. I didn’t mean to snap at you, I just… I just don’t feel…that way. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t still kiss–but only if you want to, of course.”
Alison’s voice was sugary sweet and full of softness–god, she was such a manipulative bitch. Don’t fall for it, Em, Aria thought to herself. But then, seconds later, Aria could hear the undeniable sounds of lips locking, so she slipped back downstairs and never told another soul.
Truth be told, Aria was mildly horrified at the state of her friend group when she returned to Rosewood High. The girls hadn’t even tried to remain close to one another? The brunette realized that it was going to be a lot more difficult to get her friends back together than she initially thought.
What horrified her even more, though, was the face that she saw at the front of the classroom during first period on the very first day of junior year. It was none other than Ezra, the man boy from the bar. He looked just as equally horrified to see her face and she was certain that he’d never speak to her again. And honestly, if he were even half a decent man, he would have quit his job right then and there–but of course, “decent” was the last word anyone would use to describe Ezra Fitz.
The situation with her English teacher might’ve fully taken over Aria’s brain that night if it hadn’t been for the sirens that began to ring out around 9PM, just as Aria was about to get ready for bed. The sirens were down the street but something made Aria’s blood run cold and she followed that feeling out onto the sidewalk. Sure enough, the sirens were just a few streets over, down by the DiLaurentis house. Oh, fuck.
Alison DiLaurentis’ body was found buried under the gazebo her parents had put up the previous summer. The backyard had been under construction at the time, making it the perfect place to dispose of a body.
The day of Alison’s funeral was what finally brought all the girls back together. They sat with each other in the same pew, as if no time had ever passed. While waiting for the service to begin, the four girls realized that they’d all been getting messages from a mysterious person who signed their messages with nothing but an “A.” Was it “A” for Anonymous? It couldn’t have been “A” for Alison. After all…her body was lying in a closed casket just feet away from them.’
However, it wasn’t until the very end of the service that the girls realized how serious all of this was. Detective Wilden, a hot shot police officer, approached the girls and vowed to find out what happened the night that Alison disappeared, which sent a chill down Aria’s spine. Just as he walked away, all of the girls’ cell phones eerily rang at the same time and the threatening message stared back at them through the screen:
“I’m still here, bitches, and I know everything - A”
