Pretty Little Liars: Ten Theories on the Mannequin Family

1. Vivian Darkbloom’s family.

Vivian Darkbloom is Alison's alter-ego, her fantasy self when she’s living another life: “Don’t you wish you could just be someone else?” Charlotte later takes on her identity, fleeing to Paris.

She’s supposed to be what Alison and Charlotte then want to be, and that includes the perfect “model” family, sharing “cherished memories” and “warmth and laughter” that Charlotte didn’t get.

2. Alex Drake’s wealthy family.

Alex Drake was sold from Mary Drake and Dr Cochrane to a wealthy British family that abandoned her at an orphanage when she was four.

Her adoptive parents along with adoptive siblings that were kept and loved, unlike her. The handprints on the wall are the mark of Alex who was abandoned by her adoptive family and lived a terrible life, even if they’re still living in their perfect model family.

3. Sara Harvey’s family.

Parents and a little brother, the blonde little girl can be either Sara or her sister instead (similar to number two where Alex is missing from the family dolls).

We learn Sara came from an abusive home in early S6. This could be related to the handprints on the wall.

4. More standard - Charlotte’s family.

Of course there could be a more standard answer to this question: simply Jason, Charlotte, Jessica, Kenneth. This is when Charlotte was still with her family. Jessica is pregnant with Alison.

After Alison came into the world Charlotte’s life changed not only by the bathtub incident but the boundless love she’d always have for her sister.

5. Bethany’s family.

Related to Charlotte giving (via Black Widow) condolence flowers to Bethany Young’s parents? Maybe or maybe not. The handprints on the wall are in three different colours. Three different Dilaurentis’s (the family of puppet masters) had its hand in affecting that family, and not for the better.

First - Jessica having an affair with Mr Young.

Second - Charlotte either trying to hit Bethany the night she died or digging up her grave, maybe there’s more we don’t know on Radley…

Third - Alison was supposed to be the target, but the hit ended up being made on Bethany. A fatal mistake…

6. Archer Dunhill’s family.

The reasoning for why Charlotte would have a mannequin family of Archer’s family (presumably casting him as the young boy) is dubious. However since he was her love it’s not implausible to assume she’d commemorate him in some way - and what better way to do that other than the other thing she loves the most; dolls?

7. Wren Kingston’s family.

Same with Archer especially since he was a major part of Charlotte meeting her sister and he seemed to know about the Dilaurentis-Drake-Hastings family drama back in *season 5* according to 7x20. Is it really a stretch to suspect a bigger role from him?

8. Charlotte and Archer’s future family.

With how much Charlotte cares about family it isn’t out of the picture that she’d want one with her true love Archer. The black haired mother Charlotte could be the Vivian Darkbloom disguise she continues donning after she runs away with Archer after being in Welby.

9. Not loved ones but lost ones.

The woman is Marion Cavanaugh, the man is Darren Wilden, the little girl is Bethany Young, and the little boy is “Charles” Dilaurentis.

It’s not a family, it’s the ones Charlotte has lost along the way, for better or worse, by outside forces or by choice (Side note: The handprints represent who they are survived by, one person with each colour. Maybe Marion is red or Wilden is or Bethany is green, could go either way. Either way none of them are for “Charles”).

10. Alice’s family.

No deeper meaning, but could this be the third reference to the mysterious, almost ghost-like, little blonde girl?

(In my view, this seems the most likely theory.)

PLL: OS Thoughts and Spoilers!!

Okay I just finished the first three episodes of PLL: OS and I have many, many thoughts and also I am totally hooked, but what I keep coming back to is this - 

This whole twin thing with Karen and Kelly HAS to be part of this, right? I mean, Kelly has played such a relatively small role in the show so far, it’s not like she has some clear purpose in the plot as of now. And yet the writers have gone to all of this extra effort to have Mallory Bechtel film scenes as both twins, use a body double for those scenes, edit it all together...instead of just having Karen be an only child, or giving her a fraternal twin played by a different actress. Would they really go to all that trouble just for the sake of having identical twins “just because”? I don’t think so.

I also have to point out that when she first arrives at the dance, Imogen “mistakenly” identifies Kelly as Karen. But was it really a mistake? Imogen used to be best friends with these girls, how likely is it that she would so easily mix them up at this point? And Kelly’s “twin-fusion” response seemed a little nasty and out of character...a little too much like Karen.

So I think it’s pretty clear at this point that Karen and Kelly kept up their switching places trick from earlier in the episode and it was really Kelly who died at the dance, with Karen taking her place and masquerading as her, and I will die on this hill (for now).

PLL: Original Sin theory - Kelly is obsessed with Imogen

Ok so i’ll preface this by saying that I believe the show is telling the truth in showing that Karen is dead and Kelly is living, as pll fans we are obviously honed in on twin shenanigans and having them pull an Ali/Courtney situation just feels way too obvious to me. (Also I don’t think this theory will stand up past like probably episode 4 but still)

From what we’ve seen, Karen is more of an outright, mean girl type whereas Kelly is a more quiet and sinister type of bitch. Where Karen has shown to curse people out and cause trouble blatantly, Kelly causes issues in a more sneaky underhanded way that she can almost play off as accidental but is clearly more calculated. (Like the Carrie plan being her idea)

In the party flashbacks we see that Imogen clearly has a closer bond with Karen than she does Kelly - obviously editing plays as part as it’s a pain to get both “twins” on screen at the same time but it’s Karen who rushes into Imogens’ arms, Karen who’s cheek she kisses and Karen who she continues to cling to and address for the most part as the scene goes on while Kelly gets an air kiss, a vague greeting and a few brief shared looks/touches.

It’s also shown later on that Kelly was basically an outsider in their friendship, whilst looking at a picture of the three of them we see Imogen and Karen pressed close and Kelly off to the side - alone- like a third wheel. Maybe she was jealous of the bond between them and tired of feeling like she was second best to her sister and wanted to make a change.

When Kelly tells her sister what happened between Imogen and Greg, the dialogue is specifically withheld from the viewers, perhaps Kelly was over exaggerating the story in order to cause a rift in their friendship. If she thought that there was no chance Imogen would ever like her as much as she liked Karen then maybe she thought the easiest thing to do was to just divide them entirely. (Personally I think she didn’t intend for them to have such a long-standing fall out and she probably believed they would resume their friendship soon enough but was maybe hoping they wouldn’t be quite as close - obviously Imogens’ pregnancy was an unexpected wrench in the plan as Karen used it as ammunition to fuel her new vendetta.)

Now that Karen has caused such a big issue with Imogen, Kelly knows there’s no way to rekindle the situation and resigns herself to having lost Imogen but at least can relish in the fact that she doesn’t have to compete for her attention with her sister anymore. Imogen becoming an outsider also plays into her hands as now she has zero competition for her friendship, even though she can’t have her - she doesn’t want anyone else too either. When she sees Imogen befriending the other girls she becomes sort of bitter and nasty and sides with Karen in order to fuck her over which is why she’s so gleeful about the Carrie plan, the chance to turn Imogen back into an outsider is exactly what she wants since she believes she can never have her to herself.

Flash to Karen’s death, she now realises she has an opportunity to change things up, I think Kelly sees how she can clear Imogen’s name in and save her from her fathers wrath in order to get back into her good books and also use this as an excuse to become close friends again, closer than before even since Karen is no longer around to interfere. Kelly reaching out to invite her to the funeral feels like an olive branch and then the apologising on the swings shows she’s succeeding at least partially in getting Imogen back on side. I don’t imagine it will last long as the cracks will start to appear and maybe she’ll become too possessive or something but temporarily Kelly will feel like she’s on track to being Imogen’s best friend, the only problem now being the other girls being “in her way”.

Whew, I have to admit, it’s good. Better than all the remakes.

Spoilers below, but here are my thoughts/theories:

Kelly is not Karen, have we learned nothing guys? Marlene’s game is red herrings everywhere in the beginning. My guess is she is actually happy Karen is dead, having lived in her shadow. I could definitely see her being a nemesis, but she’s still a wild card for me.

On that note, Kelly’s mom has to have been bullied by Imogen’s. She seems to be withdrawn (maybe she knows her husband is cheating/gay?), maybe she was close with Angela. I am assuming most of the adults went to HS together. How wild if Karen’s dad was also Imogen’s?

Would Wes have been in HS with them all too?! He is so sus. I do love that this time around, Tabitha knows what he is doing and recognizes the manipulative tactics he’s using on her.

Imogen’s pregnancy is such a strange plot direction for me. There’s no way there’s going to be a baby on this show? But then, I am not sure what will happen there. Identifying the dad has to be a huge reveal, otherwise we’d know?

Unrelated to plot but what the fuck is with the fashion?! Imogen’s Spirit Queen outfit was such a let down for me. The old PLL was mostly fashionable for its time.

I LOVE that Minnie “Mouse’s” mom is played by Lea Salonga AKA Princess Jasmine!

Finally, A. The jump scares and camera slanting were so scary for me lmao. The shed next to the school- um?! has anyone found the janitor yet? Why is it still up if no one uses it? I think it’s just one A right now. It has to be Angela, Angela’s sibling, an ex, idk. Or someone from this generation connected to Angela in some way.

PLL ORIGINAL SIN THEORY (I’m on ep4)

- Karen isn’t dead, Kelly is and Karen is pretending to be Kelly that much is extremely obvious but what if like in the PLL books, the switch happened long before?

If you’ve seen the original PLL, Alison tells a horror story in the first secret about two twins who get into a fight over dolls and one of the twins kills the other. We later see that dead twin in Ashley’s house many seasons later and she recalls calling her mother who is crying. She tells Ashley about how she and her twin would fight over dolls and that she was afraid her sister had lied to her mother of which would make her mad.

Let’s say that’s the version of events Alison told was a reimagining and Kelly and Karen are the twins. One day they’re playing with their dolls and get into an altercation and Kelly gets Karen in trouble and sent to Radley, but it backfires, Kelly is sent (as Karen) instead. She knows the killer, she plots the murder so she can be Kelly agian. We are actually seeing the real Kelly now alive, only on the show it looks like Karen is pretending to be Kelly.

Alternative theory: I think this one’s less likely, but let’s say the same principle only with amnesia and Kelly gets her memory back and plots this revenge against her sister. Again, she reclaims her identity

As for the identity of our killer; it’s got to be someone related to Angela

This crazy theory has been stirring around in my mind .. so we know so far this show loves referencing movies and playing homage to a lot of them so what if they decided to do an orphan twist and by that I'm talking about the Movie Orphan ,now if any one has seen that movie you know in that movie the girl being the orphan is actually a grown woman who looks like a kid.. So my theory is what if Mouse is actually much older than she really is but looks like a teenager .. who actually was the girlfriend of Angela Waters and is now going back to Millwood to get revenge on the mothers /daughters but the one doing the killing is her true love Angela Waters .. this dynamic duo could be revealed as the A team ... now to make this theory work , the moms probably knew Angela liked girls but never met the girl Angela was dating .. Theory time (PLL: Original Sin)

I was a pre teen when I started watching the original PLL and I was obsessed with it back then, PLLOS has made its way into my adult life and now i’m obsessed with theorizing everything again so let’s go

At that beach scene Imogen is still wearing the clothes from Karen’s party which makes me think baby was conceived that night, so something happened either at the party or on the way home.

Tabby was SA’d that’s why she keeps the camera at the boy’s locker room, she’s probably trying to discover who was it and tbh I have a feeling it might be Noa’s boyfriend. The opening has a lot of futebol references

One of them is for sure helping A, that text message? “Reveal your true self, 1 bully down 5 to go” was shady asf

Minnie is off but I don’t think she has anything to do with A but something equally sinister has happened to her

Karen really died, Kelly planned her death. There was a lot of swapping that day but i’m sure Kelly is the evil twin, the way she told the ‘truth’ after her dad gave a speech about how he would end those girls life? self preservation, she needed him to stop digging further into her sisters death

The sheriff definitely has an affair with the principal. I said what I said

Angela was being followed by someone/threatened the night of the party

Also, that wasn’t a party. No one calling the cops or 911? no way, literally no way. I’m pretty sure it was just the moms and Angela that night, as Tabby’s mom said “they know what everyone thinks is the truth” there’s more to it.

These are all great; but honestly my go to will always Spencer as Alison’s killer (or almost killer; or Bethany’s killer; or Courtney’s killer… all interconnected theories lol). Lately though I have been so intrigued by the idea of Aria Is A— specifically one that doesn’t use ableist misinformation as her “motive” and instead delve into all the little hints the show never really explored about Aria/Alison having some sort of twisted Heavenly Creatures relationship.
