Dream invites Hob as a plus-one to a fashion event. Hob is ecstatic to get a glimpse into the fast-paced, cut-throat industry that Dream has nudged his way into. He warns Hob that Morningstar might drag him away at any given moment and he’d be left alone, is that alright? Hob shrugs and can’t say he minds. If he gets free food and booze out of it, he’ll gladly wander around for a bit.

And for the first time in Hob’s life, he gets dolled up. Really dressing the part of a fashion mogul’s partner. Dream takes him out, using the money from a bonus in his salary to surprise Hob by taking him to a tailor. Hob wonders why none of his usual blazer and pants combo wouldn’t work and tries not to get offended at the way Dream scrunches up his nose and refuses to answer him.

“Every man should have a tailored suit in their wardrobe,” Dream explains while Hob stands on the short platform and the seamstress takes his measurements. “A perfect fit is the raison d’être of custom suits.”

Hob swallows at the perfect French slipping past Dream’s lips. He had only been in Paris for a couple weeks yet he was already name-dropping influential French designers, recalling conversations he’d had with them in stories he’d recant to Hob in an accent that Hob never knew Dream could pull off. Or that he’d be so enticed by.

“I’ll never get the chance to wear this again, you know,” Hob smiled, a little self-deprecating. Working as a chef hardly afforded Hob time to dress up. And it wasn’t like he ever went anywhere fancy enough for such effort. “After the party, it’s just gonna sit in my closet forever.”

“We’ll make use of it…” Dream says softly, standing up as the seamstress steps away to grab something. 

Dream takes up Hob’s arm, fingers trailing down the length of it, covered in a deep blue fabric that probably costs more than their monthly rent and Hob’s eyes never leave Dream as he inspects the pins and cuffs.

“A custom suit,” Dream starts again, dropping Hob’s arm and moving on to the front of the jacket, caressing the lapels. “Is designed to highlight the best features of its wearer. Bespoke tailoring is an art form, and you are the perfect canvas.”

Hob looks down at Dream, standing on the platform gives the illusion of added height, and Dream raises his eyes to look upon him. Hob tries very hard not to dive too deep into Dream’s blue eyes, tries not to get lost in the crystal clear sea of emotions, the way he could drown in them.

“And what are my best features?” Hob grins, raising an eyebrow, challenging.

Dream chuckles, tugging at the jacket. His eyes never leave Hob’s, even as the tailor returns.

“I’ll tell you later.”

There are a lot of big names and top designers at the event and Hob hasn’t a clue who any of them are, but he listens and nods when Dream points them out. He shakes hands with professional photographers and runway models and designers that Hob kind of recognizes but not really. He’s too busy marveling at the immaculate decor, the flowy dresses, and the free champagne. 

Dream, as warned, leaves his side constantly. But Hob has perfected the art of fake-it-til-you-make-it and smiles cheerily and engages in simple chit chat where he lets the other person do all the talking and nods along enthusiastically. He tugs on the sleeves on his jacket, amazed how a well-fitted suit can feel like wearing nothing at all. The fabric is also high quality, buttery soft to the touch and moving along his skin with every step like a gentle hug. He feels a little like a poser, but after a few drinks in him, settles more into the mindset of a party crasher.

After about an hour of missing Dream, Hob goes looking for him. Weaving and winding through the crowd, finding Morningstar on a few occasions and blatantly ignoring her, especially as he doesn’t see Dream with her.

Hob finds a back entrance that’s all glass and slips through into the cool evening air and hears Dream’s unmistakable deep tenor, talking with someone privately. 

And as Hob approaches, he notes the distinct agitation in Dream’s tone.

“... truly tired of finding you everywhere I go, Christian.” Dream sighs disdainfully. 

“You should be in print,” another voice– Christian, speaks quickly, laying on the charm heavily. “I see the way Morningstar treats you.”

“They treat me fine. You, on the other hand–”

“I’d treat you so well, Dream.”

Hob finally rounds a corner and finds Dream leaning back against a wall of the mansion, holding a champagne flute that no longer has anything in it between them, as if using it as a barrier. Christian is leaning just a hair too close in Dream’s space and at the sight of it, Hob nearly sees red.

“Hey, Dream. I’ve been looking for you.”

Dream turns his head and at the sight of Hob, his face relaxes immediately. The impatient, frustrated look in his eyes, the furrowed brow, vanishing in relief.

Hob isn’t a jealous guy, and he knows it isn’t jealousy that he feels rushing through his veins. It’s possession. It’s some kind of embarrassing animal instinct to claim and parade about how that’s mine, back off.

So the way he slips next to Dream, getting an arm around his waist and pulling him into a kiss that absolutely doesn’t need to be as lascivious and biting as it is, feels both appropriate and completely unnecessary. 

But the way Dream melts at the slip of Hob’s tongue, the way he’s kissing back, using his free hand to knot into the expensive fabric of his button down and pull, keeping him close, wipes Hob’s brain clean and nearly forgets why he’s doing this… until Christian clearing his throat makes its way past Hob’s ears.

They detach with a wet gasp and the way Dream chuckles, a low rumble that shoots straight through Hob’s chest and down to his crotch, makes Hob go back for another, and another. Lips only and chaste, but Dream still leans back respectably, turning his head to address the man before them with a sly grin as Hob nuzzles his way instead up his jaw and behind his ear.

“Christian, this is my fiance, Robert Gadling.”

“Uh, hi.” Christian bites out and Hob turns his head just enough to stare him down. “Didn’t know you were engaged.”

“You did.” Dream insists, extending his arm and pushing the empty glass into Christian’s fumbling hand. “You can leave, now.”

With a barely restrained sigh of “whatever,” Christian goes, shaking his head as he does and Dream takes Hob’s face in both his hands, bringing his attention forward.

“Sorry,” Hob cracks a grin. “I know you’re trying to network and he might’ve been some hotshot guy–”

“He was no one,” Dream interjects, his fingers getting in Hob’s gelled and combed back hair and pulling it. “And that was very hot. Thank you for saving me.”

“Anytime,” Hob laughs and Dream pulls him in to taste it.

The Manfrotto Saga Conclusion

You ever go past being upset to the degree it becomes funny?

I finally got the courage to open the email.

And it's bad.

But I actually got a good laugh, so at least there is that.

This is what they sent me...

"Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear that this happened.

Unfortunately, this can happen from time to time. The cost of parts and labor are not usually too bad, but when you add tax and shipping, it can become close to the point of it not being worth it.

We don't usually do this, but as a show of support, I'd like to offer you a 30% coupon code to aid in offsetting the cost of a replacement. The code is good on anything on the Manfrotto website, excluding sale items or close-outs. It will expire in 30 days and is not replaceable."

Yes, it was the tax and shipping that put me over the top. Not the actual repair cost being more than the item is currently selling for as new.

Now, you might be thinking that is the funny part.

The funny part is the 30% coupon.

You might also be thinking, "30% is a decent discount! SCORE!"

But you may have missed the "Manfrotto website" detail.

You see, manufacturer's website pricing is mostly used so the actual retailers can point to those prices and say, "Hey, look at this great sale!" even if that is the item's perpetual price.

So, let's look at this geared tripod head on their website. It's what I would upgrade to if I were to stick with their brand.

So with a 30% discount I am down to about $175. Plus those darn taxes and shipping.

Say, what is this going for on Amazon with free shipping?

So, basically what I've learned is... Manfrotto just sucks.

When I bought this originally, I was a photography noob. I didn't realize they were a bit like the Nickelback of photo gear. Very popular, but most experienced photographers try to avoid them if possible. Mainly because they use proprietary plates. If you need a ball head for landscapes and a fluid head for video and you want to easily switch between them, you need two heads from Manfrotto. They trap you in the ecosystem.

Whereas other brands mostly use "arca swiss" plates which are standardized. You can put one plate on the bottom of your camera and switch to any head from any brand that has that mount.

So I am going to save up for something with an arca swiss mount. Something that isn't fucking Manfrotto. Someone already donated about half of what I need (thank you so much) and I think I am going to sell a few things to cover the rest.

IN THE MEAN TIME... I spent all Friday night digging through my basement. I bought my tripod like 10 years ago and I knew it had some kind of head on it originally. And in the recesses of my stuff I found an old ball head.

And while I hate ball heads and think they are a pain in the ass, it will do everything I need at the moment.

Also, it doesn't wiggle.

My big upset about all of this was mostly how wasteful it is. They are going to trash something that can be fixed because they have purposely marked up the parts to force people to buy a new thing. It does not cost Manfrotto $127 to make the parts needed. I'd be surprised if it cost them $10 for those parts.

And it is my big fear that if we win the "Right to Repair" fight, all manufacturers are just going to mark up their parts like this.

But the repair company seems a little scummy as well. I emailed them before I sent in the head for repair. I showed them the video and they did a basic diagnosis.

"The lever may be loose, or the top housing may be damaged."

And they were right, the top housing was damaged.

But they didn't say, "Hey, parts for this are super expensive. It may cost over a hundred dollars to fix."

They didn't say, "We charge $30 to ship it back to you."

I suppose I should have asked, but never in my wildest imagination did I think this repair would cost that much. It was just a wiggle!

So, I'll just get something that suits my needs better. I was planning to do that eventually, but this just accelerated those plans.

Eight-strand braid is time-consuming as fuck and one hell of an exercise in dexterity keeping all the cords in the correct places, but the end result does look hella spiffy.

The longer bracelets may also work well as anklets for some people (lengths listed below). And yes, these do indeed fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Was difficult to photograph the glow, but with a little bit of editing I got it pretty close to how they look in meatspace.

They’re braided out of nylon cord, with silver-tone end caps and lobster-claw clasps, and the necklaces have 5cm chain extensions. The clasps and chains were labelled nickel-free but I can’t recall if the end caps were, so proceed at your own risk and all that jazz.

Snap! The Jam (Polydor) (this reissue came out sometime between 2020-2021; the original album came out in 1983)

Last week I was on the Hoffman Boards and there was a thread concerning a sale over at The Sound of Vinyl in which they have roughly 175 albums on sale for the astonishing price of $0.00. Yes, these albums were free for the taking but you were expected to pay the shipping costs. The catch was you could only order one album at a time. The shipping costs varied (and made little sense): between $8 and $10 and change. It took my dense brain a period of time to comprehend this sale, but eventually I did and this album is the first of four albums I bought at the sale. (Believe me, I could have bought several things, but after awhile it just seemed greedy to keep buying things!) This album, being a double album plus a bonus 45 cost me all of $8.35 to buy. That was probably what I paid for it when I bought back in 1983! (And when I had this in my greedy little hands, I momentarily thought I might still have my original pressing, but alas, I traded it ages ago.)

There are some absolute great compilations in this world: Taking Liberties by Elvis Costello, The Kink Kronikles, Changesonebowie and you can add Snap to that list. I bought this, as I've indicated, in '83 when it came out. I knew zip about The Jam and a comp seemed a good way to learn when I was young and unable (or unwilling) to buy complete catalogs of bands as I seem to do these days. When this was offered for 'free' how could I refuse? Yes, I have all The Jam's albums today, but I never play them. Will I play Snap? Does it matter? It will be like it is back home in my collection, albeit a more updated version (or actually a repressing of the original UK pressing). I had a release date for this new reissue but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet now. This press isn't listed on discogs and The Sound of Vinyl simply says it is back in print after years of being out of print. The original US press did not have the bonus 45, nor did it have color inner sleeves (that are durable), nor do I recall it being a glossy cover. And the labels were straight up red Polydor labels.

Above you see the album cover. The second photo is the gatefold. And I have to discuss Paul Weller's choice of footwear in that photo on the right side of the gatefold. I surely would have poked fun in 1983 at the legendary fashion plate, Mr Sartorial Weller, wearing white socks and sandals. But today what really kills me is that he is doing so in a three piece suit. I do not care how cool his fashion sense is, this is easily one of the silliest choices of footwear a boy could ever wear with a cool three piece suit. Now, I will hope beyond hope that his actual footwear are those inside that little refrigerator but since we cannot see Rick Buckler's feet, they might be his shoes. Regardless, fussy Paul Weller surely shouldn't have allowed the photographer to stick him in such footwear with a three piece even for an otherwise cool photograph. I cannot stop looking at this photograph. The third photo is of the back of the album cover.

The original UK pressing contained a four track live EP with it complete with picture sleeve. You will find the front and back of that sleeve below, followed by both sides of the label.

As I've said, this is a fine compilation but this new reissue is high quality across the board. Perhaps it merely duplicates the original UK press, but I really think this quality elevates this already fine album.

Going all minimal.

So here we are at the end of the year 2023, and what a year it has been. Oh and of course I must welcome you to the new and minimal home of 28swphotography. Yes, I will be getting rid of the main 28swphotography website in the not too distant future, as instead I wanted something that is minimal and is easy to navigate, the current soon to be old 28swphotography website is one that seems cluttered and is horrible, when I first designed it, I probably did not have that much experience in Wix and how it works, instead designing the website from scratch and using a blank template which has not worked, but as I look at it now, it seems to be cluttered and slow - that being said I am not going to be critical of Wix as it is a good platform, but why do you need to pay for a website these days when all a photographer needs is somewhere to display their works and of course maybe do some writing and of course have contact details and some kind of print store - I mean you only have to go looking at the majority of photographers and you will see that their websites do seem anything but minimal, oh and when you count in the costs of domains and hosting fees it all stacks up, thankfully though with Tumblr, it is free, yes you could pay and upgrade for features that you probably do not need and as a photographer why would I need or want to do that? I simply do not, what I want is something minimal and easy and that is what I have got here with this platform. Yes I will probably make some changes to it - but they will be minimal.

But even with this minimalistic website, what else do I want to do? Well of course to be able to sell my prints through the website, which is why I will be linking the 28swphotography RedBubble Store and of course the 28swphotography Photo4Me Store so it is easy and seamless to order prints, plus of course have linked some other blogs that I also write, one of them being about the photography of the mundane which is interesting, plus another one of course is some poetry that I have started writing, which is all about the observations in the landscape and somehow photography and poetry do go hand in hand together, which is something that if you had told me that was going to happen or would ever be a thing, I would have looked at anyone gone out, but no photography and poetry do go together incredibly well to say the least.

Still though, what else is there to say?
