POC WoL Appreciation Week is a go!
I want to thank everyone for all the supportive responses to it and now am happy to say that I am going through with the appreciation week!
I plan for it to be October 25th to October 31st!
As stated before, during the event I will post daily screenshot prompts. And they can be interpreted in whatever way you want! The only rule on subject matter is that I ask that you please keep things sfw!
Support each other! Getting likes and reblogs and nice comments on your own screenshots is always a neat warm fuzzy feeling. But be sure to return the love! If you see someone’s screenshot(s) going without notes, like a like or a nice comment. Let them know they were seen and appreciated. This is an appreciation event so show your fellow players their beautiful characters are appreciated!
Aside from that the only real rule to this event is to be kind. This is a positivity event. No hate, no negativity, and no hostility whatsoever. I don’t want to see anyone harassing or bullying anyone else. If you find yourself that at odds with someone I ask that you make use of the block button instead of dragging any ugliness into an event that’s meant to be fun and positive. And the last thing I want is for it to be associated with any negative incidents. Please be kind to each other.
If you have any questions please ask away and I will try to answer them as best I can. And thank you again for the support! Can’t wait to see all your lovely characters!

No shade at anyone, but just putting out the gentlest, kindest reminder that the creator of POC WOL Week has stated it is meant to be for POC content creators to shine and appreciate the beauty of their characters.

I’ve officially no spoons and it sucks because I’ve two more screenshots I’ve wanted to say for PoC WoL week but in between squeezing in one last day out and the elections, it’s hard to do anything else but watch anime then sleep. I’m not putting my activity on hold but I am taking this weekend to pull myself together and letting folks know that they can do the same.
I had this friend for a few years and she was almost like a mother figure to me; providing for me when I needed it, picking me up when stranded & giving me a shoulder to cry on when no one was around. We stopped being friends last night and it took what warmth I had to finally let her go.
A part of me is very angry with myself for having those comments slide without addressing them properly and pressing the issue when it wasn’t acknowledged. Yet another is sad that I’ve lost her because no matter what, it isn’t easy letting something go that you once cherished for years.
Tumblr media
I won’t get into specifics because it’s personal but the argument revolved around her vaguely prejudiced statements she’s made over the past year and not being able to take responsibility for them, stating that “everyone mattered.” And that we, as the minority, are not treated any less unfairly than our white citizens.  After being fact-checked by multiple sources when she combated my views, she went to the ‘let’s agree to disagree’ ploy, then proceeded to guilt trip me into oblivion by stating how her “love for me” and our “friendship” shouldn’t be tarnished over something so trivial.  This grown woman cared more about looking the victim than actually give a damn about me to the point she’d use every toxic/abusive trick in the book to have me bend and comply. And it really, really fucking hurt. She’s still a person, no matter what, but this couldn’t be a person that I could call myself a friend anymore.
And I wholly implore that everyone experiencing pressure from families, loved ones and friends to do the same: stand your ground. You don’t have to attack or waste time even educating them but never, ever ever, let anyone put you in a corner and force you to compromise your values or very existence. A person who truly loves and appreciate you will never ask you to do that.

POC WoL Week Day 3: Adventure
“And this is the Sea of Clouds. Rather reminds me of Il Mheg, minus the pixies, though there is a giant whale. This particular spot is actually directly above where we first met; I thought you might appreciate the memory from a slightly different perspective. Or maybe not; Dusk Mother take me, there are so many places, yet somehow I can never seem to decide where to bring you. Mayhaps you could speak up and help a bit? Make a request? After all, this is hardly just my adventure anymore. Eh, Ardbert?”

the sad reality is fandom is transactional in a lot of ways, creators are viewed like content machines to begin with and then Black creators absolutely have the deck stacked against us from jump bc no one in these white ass fandoms wants to engage w anything but white ppl and the occasional brown paper doll by a white creator.
I saw one white person send an ask abt poc WoL week asking if it’s ok if they can participate with their characters of color and I’m floored bc I don’t get how you read that post announcing it and come away with “I as a white woman need to take up space here”
Compare the notes the announcement for poc fan focused weeks/events/challenges get to the actual content produced for it and it’s hysterical. Vivienne appreciation week a few years ago was like me and blackviera and 1 or 2 others. meanwhile the announcement topped 3k notes. People reblog shit to look woke for clout and then never actually take substantive action to engage w the content
that’s why tbqh I focus on reblogging Black folks and Black folk produced fan content. It’s not that I don’t love or appreciate my white/nb friends and y’all’s work, I read and enjoy it, but literally no one is out here checking for us but each other.

Is it ok to post in Wol week if your wol is a poc but irl you are white? Asking cause I dunno and I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.
Answer: We genuinely can not stop you from doing so but we would appreciate it if you didn’t. Reblogging and hyping up the PoC players that do post is the best thing you can do right now!

With respect to the POC WOL Appreciation Week, I'm joining the group of folks who will be here to support and reblog the participants, but I will not be a participant myself, now that I understand that the exercise is more about creators than characters. Initially I had intended simply to display my character and have that be that, but as the discussion continued, it seemed less and less appropriate to partake.
I believe very heavily in visual diversity of characters and I try to reflect that in the characters I create, but I also don't believe that someone like me, who does not identify as a POC, should use this appreciation week to get recognition. I do hope that at some point we can maybe have some serious, gritty talks about racism and colourism as it applies to this fandom, but perhaps that's best left for another day.

POC WoL Appreciation Week
You read the title right!
I want to do something for all our poc and their characters in the community. But I want to know if anyone would be interested in it. The gist is simple. I want to do a week of screenshot prompts for people to do and show off their lovely poc wol! Each prompt will involve a different theme that can be interpreted however you want.
As a poc myself it really brightens my day seeing other people’s poc characters show up on my dash. Seeing poc characters being loved and cherished really warms my heart. And I wanted to share that feeling with the community.
These a very tough times we are going through. And I wanted to do something to brighten people’s moods. So if this is something people would like to see, I will host it! And feel free to dm  me for any questions!

I’ve been watching and listening to your feedback
I’ve been seeing some uncertainty and worries about whether or not white content creators should be participating in poc wol week. And I should probably address it now. And perhaps I had spoken too soon at first and stirred up some confusion and worry on the matter. I apologize for that.
I did make this event to be originally meant for poc in our community. I made this event because of my own insecurity about my characters. And after hearing about how other poc fans faced harassment for their characters I fell pretty hard into a depressive slump. I cried about it. I didn’t want to write. I didn’t want to rp. I didn’t even want to share my content with friends. And it hurt even worse to know that I wasn’t the only one who had ever felt like that.
The final straw was when I actually felt tempted to use fantasia to lighten my character’s skintone. And I knew I needed to do something about. Because I’d be hurting myself worse by betraying myself and who I was like that.
And I knew that I probably wasn’t the only one who had those same desperate thoughts. That my characters weren’t “pretty” or “light enough” for people to like them. Those aren’t healthy thoughts to have.
And so I thought of poc wol week. A moment for all those poc content creators who ever felt that insecurity to shine. To let them know their characters are beautiful and appreciated and perfect just the way they are.
Many poc players would prefer it if white content creators not participate. I never said anything officially because I wasn’t sure how I would be able to enforce this beyond trusting people’s integrity. Now I’m not going to be able to check every single blog to make sure only poc are participating. But I do ask any white content creators thinking about participating to please consider this.
This is my first large scale event and I am still learning how to manage it responsibly. Fumbled on it a little there but I will be happy for any questions or feedback.

Thank you
This week is going by and I’ve seen so many amazing wol/ds!
When I first came up with the idea for POC WoL Appreciation Week I honestly did not think my post would get more than ten notes. That it would just get buried. And I was absolutely stunned to wake up next morning to see it get almost a hundred notes--and even more so when I saw that number grow. This was something people actually wanted.
When I saw that first entry show up in the tag, I felt pure joy. I love scrolling through the tag. I’m seeing people bravely sharing their own experiences. I’m seeing people being encouraging and supportive. Which is nice to see given that so many people are going through rough times in our world right now.
I hope this event continues to reach the people of colour in our community. And I hope it helps anyone who is struggling. Because no one should ever feel bad about wanting characters who look like them.
I am so glad this even kicked off like it did. I was honestly not expecting this amount of enthusiasm. And I want to thank every one of you. Because without your support I wouldn’t even have had the confidence to host it.
So keep it up. We’re half-way through the week and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your characters.
