Hey thanks for the Numel love! How about another of my favorites, Whismur?
Tumblr media
Whismur!!!
Whismur’s an odd little Normal-type rabbit-like creature. It’s simultaneously themed around both being very quiet and being very loud. Known as the Whisper Pokemon, Whismur is exceptionally quiet under typical circumstances, with its voice being barely audible – but if it senses danger, it cries at a volume comparable to a jet plane. Its crying actually startles itself, which leads it to cry even harder, creating a feedback loop of continuous screaming. This then continues until it eventually gets exhausted and falls asleep. Just like a real baby!
Tumblr media
Its ability to cry nonstop is actually incorporated into its design in a pretty ingenious way: those little holes beneath its ears. Apparently these holes allow it to inhale even when crying, enabling it to shriek continuously without the need to catch its breath. This also means that if its ear holes are sealed, it stops crying, though attempting that seems….not advisable. Don’t wanna accidentally suffocate your Whismur!
Tumblr media
The other notable aspect of Whismur’s design is its face, which is….very strange. It’s got eyes consisting of four lines each, radiating like plus signs, and its mouth is a very peculiar shape as well. Although noselessness usually isn’t worth noting, it seems a deliberate choice with Whismur, given its ear holes’ ability to inhale air. Still, strange as its face is, it definitely evokes a level of distress that seems appropriate for something scared of its own crying. It’s quite pitiful, really.
Tumblr media
Whismur is also one of the only pokemon in the franchise to be nicknamed by an NPC, with Zinnia accompanied by a Whismur named Aster. This Whismur occasionally addresses Zinnia with cries of “mum”, “mama” in Japanese, seemingly intended to evoke the sense of it being Zinnia’s “daughter”. According to an interview and the Pokemon Adventures manga, Aster was named after a person with special powers who held the position of Lorekeeper prior to Zinnia. This person likely held special significance to Zinnia and has since passed away, explaining Zinnia’s somewhat extreme attachment to Aster.
Tumblr media
Shiny Whismur has a slightly paler lilac body, with green accents instead of yellow. I don’t feel the colour scheme fits it quite as well, though it’s a decent shiny overall even if it’s not a dramatic change.
Whismur’s not a pokemon I’m personally that into, but I respect it. It’s an interesting mix of cute and unsettling, with its small rabbit-like body being traditionally adorable but then subverted by its super weird crying face. For something so forgotten, it definitely feels like a lot of thought went into its seemingly simple design and concept.
Screamy beby/10.

The Long and Short of It - Runners-up of Unusual Size
And now, a silently deafening congratulations to our runners-up for this week: @azathoth-the-bored, @helloijustreadyourpost, and @pocketvikings!
Scuttling Companion - @azathoth-the-bored
ATTACK CRAB! Yes! Excellent! I must compliment you for finding a vector for constructing a Combat Crab that does not in any way involve a knife. That would be my, and I think many other peoples’ go-to strategy for Violent Crustacean Construction, and yet you’ve deftly defied that idea and instead dipped your magnificent claws into the realms of wizardry. Fantastic. So lets talk about this wizard crab. It seems... Real goshdarn powerful. Like, “You probably need to tone this down a bit, honestly” powerful. Might want an extra mana or a lower power somewhere in there. Definitely feels like an uncommon if nothing else. As much as I would love to have a board full of these beaters in limited and just spend my time drawing cards on my opponent’s turn, preventing them from ever attacking or blocking my tide of terror, I somehow doubt anyone playing against me would feel the same way, so thus I must advocate for rarer Crab Familiars. Lovely work regardless, though.
Goblin Pretenders - @helloijustreadyourpost
Your skill for consistently coming up with cards that so succinctly yet elegantly yet novelly yet understandably fit these prompts cannot be overstated, and I feel I need to commend you for that before I begin talking about your submission, which has, in five words of rules text, conveyed that it is very much just Three Goblins in a Trenchcoat. Yes, I know you changed the name from that. No, I will not forgive you. Regardless, the trenchcoat flavor (ew) remains, and words cannot adequately summarize how fundamentally Goblin-like this method of constructing a Tall Goblin is. I can just imagine the thought process here: “I want to make an Unusually Large Goblin, how do I do that? What if they all hid in the same jacket?” and that’s it, that’s the card. It makes perfect sense, it brings warmth and joy to even the most frozen and dejected of souls, what’s not to love? Aside maybe from the repercussions of allowing a Goblin deck to potentially assemble an evasive hasty 6/6 on turn three. That seems possibly dangerous, and is probably the main reason this isn’t a winner in title (aside, of course, from this contest being extraordinarily difficult to judge, just as every contest is). But it very much is a winner in my heart. And also a runner-up. It very much is that, too.
Bamboo Trap - @pocketvikings
I’m not going to lie, I did kind of write this one off a bit at first, but, though it is very simple technology, it very much does the trick.  Flash is a very clever way of making a Plant/Wall with great power that's still an effective blocker, and the flavor is very well executed. Though I do have one, tiny, tiny concern: I’m not sure this card is green. Like, I know the card you submitted is green. But functionally, this is just about half an Impeccable Timing. I know green gets plenty of flash creatures, but is a Wall a creature, really? In set design terms, defenders are generally not counted as creatures, as they are incapable of performing the main action which moves the game forward. I'm just not confident green is allowed to remove creatures like this. This same card, but white? Black, even, maybe? Absolutely, 0 concerns whatsoever, you're golden. But the green mana gives me pause. It is, of course, incredibly minor pause on a perfectly lovely card, but that pause is still there, and I felt it was worth at least bringing up.
And those are our runners for this week. Full commentary, and I swear this on the soul of my father Domingo Montoya, will be forthcoming. Yes, all of it. I mean those ones, too. I do also have finals this week, though, so your consideration at this time would be greatly appreciated. Regardless, thank you all for participating, this contest was a delight to watch unfold. See y’all in a year! Less time than that if you’re counting the general commentary, but, yknow. Can’t pass up that goof.

Right up your Alley - Artist’s Alley Winners
Here they are, folks! Not much of a preamble this time (other than I picked three land-themed cards, huh) so let’s get into it!
Nature’s Bounty by @hiygamer
I had to do a double take on that art, because oh my god that bird is made of leaves it’s adorable. The card itself is very neat- it’s a variant on Growth Spiral, except the card draw is conditional but you might get a populate in exchange. It seems to play the same at first, but it opens up a lot of different scenarios, and definitely feels more GW- you’re either helping the land or the creatures grow, and it feels very mother-nature-y. The flavor text is also very sweet- on any other card, I would honestly think it’s a little too saccharine, but with this art and the effect, it just really comes together in a way that it normally wouldn’t.
Swallowed by the Sea by @nine-effing-hells
Ahh, the good ol’ rarely used “just beneath” rules text. It’s been a while since we’ve seen that. This one is on the winners list because of how incredibly well the name and effect work together. If you were to tell me of a card named “Swallowed by the Sea”, this would be the most literal translation into game terms I could think of. It works so well, too! More islands means more water, a bigger wave, and things get buried more. It’s great! The art is also a fantastic fit, and the haiku flavor text is the cherry on top. Much like the other winners, everything about this card just fits together so smoothly.
Wilderness Awaits by @pocketvikings
It’s no secret that I typically find myself drawn to the splashy, exciting cards, since they are quite literally designed to grab your attention. Something about this one just called out to me, though. It has a very elegant simplicity, and I wouldn’t blink twice at seeing this in an actual pack. We’ve seen lots of one-mana-tutor-basic-to-hand-with-upside spells (whoof, that’s a mouthful), but no scry 1 so far. The art just feels so exciting, so open with possibilities, and it elevates a completely straightforward common into something more. The flavor text is also great- with that much room, you could have over-engineered a big block of flavor, but the simplicity of the text complements the card so beautifully. It’s very well done- obviously not pushing any boundaries of design, but it’s clean and well-polished.
See you in like 5 minutes!

Sparks Flying - Pre-Ignition Winners
Hey folks! Lotta really cool entries this week. Several characters I definitely expected to see, and several that came out of left field, but were awesome picks nonetheless. However, as always, a few just had that certain je ne sais quoi that singled them out as winners. And here they are!
Tyvar, Prince of Skemfar by @nine-effing-hells
Hoo boy. Far and away the most flavorful card this week, and so many little details that bring this card to life. Firstly, it fits right in the cross-section of double tribal like so many Kaldheim cards do - Like Cleaving Reaper did for Angels and Beserkers. Secondly, Tyvar’s character is quite literally “boastful himbo”, so Boast is a beautiful choice for him. The flavor text is a ribbon on top of some already excellent flavor, and... yeah. I’m not sure what else to say about this card, other than I really like everything it’s doing, and it would be a very fun deck to pilot. The abilities are simple and easy to remember while still being fun combat tricks, it encourages an aggressive swarm of tokens- if Tyvar hadn’t been a planeswalker, this is exactly the kinda of card that would seamlessly fit with Kaldheim as a whole.
Angrath, Belligerent Blacksmith by @misterstingyjack
The more I read this one, the more and more I liked it. I don’t know how “angrath-y” it feels, considering his schtick is mind-control magic and less “artifacts with sac abilities”, but since we’re going with the blacksmith flavor, it’s understandable. The ability is really neat, and immediately made me want to theorycraft this deck- obviously you want self-sacrificing artifacts, as many of them as possible, and ones that you could benefit off of activating twice in one turn. Sadly, Treasures and other tokens don’t work with him, but that is likely for the best. I also like the way that it works out where you only get a single extra use out of the artifacts, before needing some other way to recur them again. It’s a really cool card and definitely feels like a build-around-me commander. I do think the flavor could be stronger here, because I’m not sure exactly what he’s doing (repurposing scrap metal for new projects?) but the existing flavor text doesn’t contribute anything that the name doesn’t already cover, so you could use that space to expand on the character a bit.
Niko, Stunning Athlete by @pocketvikings
Our third of three Niko cards this week, and by far one of the simplest and cleanest entries overall. After all, before their ignition, Niko was “just” an athlete, A damn good one, to be sure, but not exactly a complicated profession. I like the heroic both as a nice tie-in to Theros, and as a way for Niko to create openings for themselves. The curiosity effect is also just a nice simple way of getting a reward for “winning” the combat. There’s really nothing crazy about this card, but it would slot perfectly into an Aura/ voltron precon, and you could build some very flavorful decks with it. I can’t help but wonder if it should need just a liiiiittle something more- like first strike or a gold token on combat damage, a la The First Iroan Games? That’s probably just my “commander designs must be pushed” brain though, so ignore me. I think it’s a wonderfully flavorful and fun design.
And them’s the winners! See you shortly for the runners up!
@naban-dean-of-irritation
