POC WoL Appreciation Week is a go!

I want to thank everyone for all the supportive responses to it and now am happy to say that I am going through with the appreciation week!

I plan for it to be October 25th to October 31st! 

As stated before, during the event I will post daily screenshot prompts. And they can be interpreted in whatever way you want! The only rule on subject matter is that I ask that you please keep things sfw! 

Support each other! Getting likes and reblogs and nice comments on your own screenshots is always a neat warm fuzzy feeling. But be sure to return the love! If you see someone’s screenshot(s) going without notes, like a like or a nice comment. Let them know they were seen and appreciated. This is an appreciation event so show your fellow players their beautiful characters are appreciated!

Aside from that the only real rule to this event is to be kind. This is a positivity event. No hate, no negativity, and no hostility whatsoever. I don’t want to see anyone harassing or bullying anyone else. If you find yourself that at odds with someone I ask that you make use of the block button instead of dragging any ugliness into an event that’s meant to be fun and positive. And the last thing I want is for it to be associated with any negative incidents. Please be kind to each other. 

If you have any questions please ask away and I will try to answer them as best I can. And thank you again for the support! Can’t wait to see all your lovely characters!

Freeing this feathered friend, from a terrible, ill-fitted cage, was one of her first good deeds since retirement. The bird was free to go anywhere it wanted, yet it chose to hang out with some old sky-pirate who also recently gained her freedom.

The sparrow may not always be seen with her, but it did not stray far. It was beckoned by its name, Meep, due to its constant chirping, and what of the hellsguard? Well, she gave herself a new name as well: Quiet Sparrow.

I have always been shy about my ethnicity.  Growing up, compared to my family, I was fairer skinned but I grew up in a Latinx household where I grew up hearing Spanish and English, I celebrated Latinx traditions and this was all normal to me growing up.  When I started school, in a mostly white neighborhood, I found out just how different my family was.  When you’re children, different is strange and I was told that my family was strange.  Despite being fairer skinned, I had features that my classmates liked to point out and tease as being different and, therefore, ugly.  My nose was too big, my hips were too wide compared to my more willowy classmates, my eyes were too dark and not sparkling blue. I transferred to a mostly Latinx junior high because it got so bad.  But it wasn’t any better there.  In my new junior high, I wasn’t Latina enough.  I didn’t talk with an accent so that made me ‘white.’  My Spanish wasn’t the ‘correct’ Spanish (we spoke Tex Mex at home).  I was quiet and shy.  I was isolated again. High School came and it got a little better.  It wasn’t until college where I could finally just be happy with myself and people got over their stupid fixations and focused on being adults. I struggle a lot with my self esteem but it’s beautiful to find people who want to reach out and say ‘you belong and you’re beautiful the way you are.’  Thanks for letting me take part in POC Week.

After a great deal of encouragement from my friends today I finally decided to make Berrod look the way I’ve always wanted him to. I always hesitated or minimized the changes because I had so much art, story, and screenshots, but I can make new stuff from now on. I’ve got a lot to change and update, but it’s worth it. I’m so, so pleased with this! Thank you for the encouragement, folks!

POC WoL Week Prompt 2: Home 

Character Featured: Straume Staunton, dock-worker turned adventurer. 

More rambling under the cut.

We often talk about the escapism of roleplay -- and that is valid as hell. When I began to play Straume though, I decided to make my experience with him about embracing instead. Embracing colour, lifestyle, personality, sexuality. I wanted to write an actual person living life in Eorzea. I wanted to write his relation to his home, to his travels, his labours, his indulgences, all without shame. Tropes aren’t a bad thing in writing and I’m sure Straume’s still got plenty. Still I wanted to tear down the walls of what some characters ‘should be’. In the end, I got my second generation immigrant highlander; a short, stocky fellow who works hard physically and has decided to educate himself in order to seek better opportunities and see the wider world. 

He can throw a punch (he says; allegedly), he can lug heavy crates around -- but he’s damn good at his letters and numbers, and well-spoken to boot. He struts around in a tank top, slops and boots. He’s a skilled laborer with a good work ethic and the will to learn. He can also cast spells from his little budget grimoire. He’s made up his mind to use all these honed skills to become an adventurer and live his dream, to embrace his freedom. 

He has his flaws as well, nobody’s perfect. He is as fallible as any man. He can be mistaken, he can misstep. By no means is he some goody-two shoes, even if he is lawful. 

He is a sexual being. He craves it, indulges in it. 

He is proud of who he is and nothing can take that from him. 

It’s sort of self-inserting, but honestly, I don’t care! A lot of his qualities are things I embrace for myself, and things I want to see this creation of mine embrace for himself. It’s so damn refreshing, being able to do this without the pall of hiding behind an actual falsehood like before. To indulge in a tribute to my pride in myself and my creative spirit. 

Now I just need to finish gearing him...

I’ve been watching and listening to your feedback

I’ve been seeing some uncertainty and worries about whether or not white content creators should be participating in poc wol week. And I should probably address it now. And perhaps I had spoken too soon at first and stirred up some confusion and worry on the matter. I apologize for that. 

I did make this event to be originally meant for poc in our community. I made this event because of my own insecurity about my characters. And after hearing about how other poc fans faced harassment for their characters I fell pretty hard into a depressive slump. I cried about it. I didn’t want to write. I didn’t want to rp. I didn’t even want to share my content with friends. And it hurt even worse to know that I wasn’t the only one who had ever felt like that.

The final straw was when I actually felt tempted to use fantasia to lighten my character’s skintone. And I knew I needed to do something about. Because I’d be hurting myself worse by betraying myself and who I was like that. 

And I knew that I probably wasn’t the only one who had those same desperate thoughts. That my characters weren’t “pretty” or “light enough” for people to like them. Those aren’t healthy thoughts to have.

And so I thought of poc wol week. A moment for all those poc content creators who ever felt that insecurity to shine. To let them know their characters are beautiful and appreciated and perfect just the way they are. 

Many poc players would prefer it if white content creators not participate. I never said anything officially because I wasn’t sure how I would be able to enforce this beyond trusting people’s integrity. Now I’m not going to be able to check every single blog to make sure only poc are participating. But I do ask any white content creators thinking about participating to please consider this. 

This is my first large scale event and I am still learning how to manage it responsibly. Fumbled on it a little there but I will be happy for any questions or feedback.
