i think what i adore about ladynoir beyond high school age (18 and over) is the opportunity it leaves for some of the most DELICIOUS best friends to lovers scenarios. because, like, two people who've been fighting side by side for years? who've known each other long enough to make jokes about it, haha remember when we were fourteen and you-- we AGREED to never speak of it!!!! who've spent so long learning each other inside out, even, in chat noir's case, getting over feelings, that the idea of anything romantic between them is so far off the radar that they don't feel the need for certain boundaries, because why would it matter if they made jokes about how attractive they find each other, about getting married, about how they could totally mess with the rest of the miracle team by pretending they're hooking up because it's so far out of the realm of possibility.
but then there would be that imperceptible shift. the moment where one of them makes a joke and it feels just a bit more loaded than it should. gazes lingering where they never lingered and playful smiles turning curious. the sudden awareness that, while maybe they were cuddling on a rooftop with their best friend, they were also wrapped up in the arms of someone they trust with their lives, and is extremely attractive, and, wait, if the only reason it was platonic before was because there were no feelings, what does THIS mean?
THE TENSION. THE PINING. THE INHERENT MESS OF BEING IN YOUR TWENTIES. PLEASEEEE

One of the first things Arthur did upon hearing his Wife was going into labor was drink himself stupid. One of the things we now know about his parents is that they were alcoholics to quite the degree. Arthur, whether he knew it or not, was just acting on what he knew parenthood to be. He didn’t know how to be a dad, he didn’t know how to be a husband, but he did know how to drink.

"Carlos, if you could just pause your experiment for a second--if you could only hear me out, hear my hypothesis! I think once you understand the science of the situation, you--" Carlos opened the door. He was crying. She had never seen him cry. He was overwhelmed and unsure of how to express his emotions, since he usually only did so in carefully worded sentences, not with water from his body. "The science of the situation?" he snarled. "That Otherworld. I was trapped there, Nilanjana. I couldn't see Cecil for ten lonely years. I was kept away from the people I love, in that desolate place where you never get hungry and you never have to drink water and so you never live. It is a place that devours. It is a place that is empty. That is the science of the situation, and I study it so I can fix it. Only I can do that. Only these experiments can do that. I'm sorry, Nilanjana; I'm not going to stop so you can tell me what science is."

#Tyto listens to WtNV#spoiler warning I guess for a book that came out a few years ago now#anyway yeah hi I finished the book#the resolutions to the plot and to Nils' character arc were pretty good. nothing to write home about but fun and serviceable#I personally get annoyed whenever a story pulls a ''you thought this romance would end with these two TOGETHER? lol NOPE''#like we get it it's more realistic for whirlwind romances to end in a breakup and sometimes it's better for people to just stay friends#but firstly this isn't real life; it's fiction. with narrative devices and such.#and secondly WtNV of all media does NOT get to preach about realistic relationship trajectories when its lead fell in love at first sight#lmao I'm just saying. I'm not MAD about it or anything it just made me roll my eyes.#ANYWAY. that aside: it was good. and I do genuinely like the friendship Nilanjana builds up with Darrell at the end#but obviously the real star of the show was Carlos and the completely unprecedented character depth that they smothered him in.#not ONLY recontextualizing over a year's worth of the podcast but ALSO saddling him with LAYERS of guilt over the events in this book#he *KILLED* the *GODDAMN* *CENTIPEDE*#after his beautiful little speech about not killing things just because we don't understand them!#he was just SO traumatized by his time in the Otherworld and SO afraid for his family after Janice nearly got Got that he KILLED IT!!!#and THEN!!!! not only do they find out that the centipede wasn't responsible for the destruction!!#but it turns out it was HIS OWN MACHINE THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#his attempts to keep everyone safe were what actually caused the danger!!!! AUGH HE WAS ONLY TRYING TO HELP#HE'S JUST SCARED AND HE WANTS EVERYONE TO BE SAFE AND NOT EXPERIENCE THE SAME HORRORS HE DID AUGHDUSHGHDH#...anyway yeah back to my regularly scheduled episode listening tomorrow

The Springfield pictures on my phone are coming in handy as I go through the Lincoln book.
Wax figures of Lincoln's Cabinet from the Lincoln Museum
Banner from the 1860 Election in the historic Springfield Capitol building.
Sign from Lincoln's Law Office.
Historic Springfield Capitol building
#history is awesome#presidential talk#part of the reason i'm pausing the podcast to dig further into lincoln#is because i intended to look deeper into lincoln after this trip and never did#it's fun going back through the pictures with more context#though it would have been even more fun to have that context when i was there#the main reason i included that banner picture is because i got a nice surprise#when i saw hannibal hamlin's name and realized 'oh now i know that guy!'#it's fun to learn about history of a place you've actually been to#nice to be able picture lincoln's house and the state legislature whenever they mention them#though it is a struggle to roll back my imagination and remember the city doesn't look like the one i saw#pretty sure there was no museum across the street from lincoln's house#lincoln didn't have car traffic outside his office#lincoln probably did not go to the krispy kreme#which makes me very sad because that was one of the most profound culinary experiences of my life#(new item for the time travel bucket list: take lincoln to the krispy kreme)#there are other cool and useful pictures i wanted to show but unfortunately i had to avoid the ones with people in them#there's a great shot of the front of lincoln's office but my sister is standing right in front of it#and most of the useful lincoln's house photos have other tourists there#suddenly i'm worried that i wasn't supposed to take pictures inside the lincoln museum#if any angry museum workers see this i'm sorry#i only had an hour which meant we were sprinting through that place and i needed to be able to look closer later

Underrated "worst kind of thinkpiece article" contendor: articles about how we as a society need to examine [current trend] because naïvely buying into it ruined the author's life, only when you actually read the article it's clear that the author is in fact blaming a LOT of their personal issues on. Like. Marie Kondo

hold please for magnus archives. HOLD PLEASE FOR MAGNUS ARCHIVES.
Web-aligned avatar of the Eye john constantine, marked by every entity but the End, with whom he made a deal: he stays alive, and unmarked, as long as he spends the rest of his days preventing the ritual of the Watcher's Crown from ever taking place.
qualifications: frequently appears in people's nightmares after saving their life, has a legacy of being seen watching his comic writers from across the street, maintains a wide web (ha) of connections through the world of the Entities, weaves plots around his enemies with incredible deftness, incredibly skilled at hypnotic interrogation, probably called jonah magnus a bitch to his face at some point. and then ran for his life, but it was worth it.
potential timeline under the cut because uhhh????? things added up A LITTLE TOO WELL here
constantine being obsessed with "magic" as a kid after an encounter with an unknown entity in his bedroom (all his engines) and searching voraciously for leitners his whole childhood. finally discovers one and through a scheme involving an elaborate fake seance, uses it to bind his father so he could finally run away from home - thus becoming marked by the Web
becoming marked by the Eye and placed on the avatar track when he thwarted a ritual attempt at newcastle by unintentionally drawing the information on how to stop it out of astra; whether thwarting the ritual or taking the knowledge killed her, he still doesn't know
sent to ravenscar, a smirke-designed building, and while there is marked by an avatar of the Spiral that feeds on madness; he escapes, funnily enough, by confusing it
goes to america to thwart the brujeria — a faction of the Dark — but fails, being marked in the process.
returns home to find gary lester being hunted by an avatar of the Corruption; sacrifices him to save him, but is marked in the process. midnite comments on this, and brings the markings to his attention for the first time
loiters, lurks, and blackmails his way around the magnus institute to research the entities and their marks; in the process, learns about the ritual of the watcher's crown, and is convinced by the head of the institute at the time (👁) that it would be saving the world if he pursued it
is marked by an avatar of the Slaughter that entices war vets to obliterate their own hometown
is marked by the Stranger when ritchie simpson's consciousness becomes trapped inside a computer and later possesses constantine in an attempt to break free (ritchie simpson & sergey ushanka should kiss frankly)
is marked by the Hunt when a serial killer murders his father, hunts him across london, and constantine is forced to kill him in self-defense
comes up against and is marked by a budding avatar of the Extinction when it nukes a town, though nobody knows it's even an entity by this point
learned the truth about the Watcher's Crown from an avatar of the End (the first of the fallen) while trying to save a friend's life. makes a deal with the End to dedicate his time to preventing that ritual from ever happening, in exchange for not being marked or attacked by its avatars for as long as he lives. decides, privately, to keep his options open, and continues to accrue marks when the opportunity arises.
when he's left homeless after his breakup with kit, an avatar of the Lonely hunts him through the streets of london; he manages to trick it and See it off, but not before it marks him
creates the golem of the demon constantine from clay to imbue with portions of himself, in order to trick another avatar into not killing him; bringing it to life marks him by the Flesh
is buried alive in glasgow during an altercation with an avatar of the Buried, which failed because of his pre-existing deal with the End
submerges his arm in boiling water during a trial of courage in a cult setting; the burns mark him for the Desolation
takes a dream-walking root to meet with an avatar of the Vast and negotiate being marked; is almost swallowed up, but tricks his way out, and escapes successful
jc: hellblazer constantine is finally marked by the End when he willingly stops his own heart in a plan to thwart the unknowing; when he comes back to life, he has no vital signs and is now eligible to conduct the ritual of the watcher's crown; last seen running for his fucking life (un-life?)

I was a guest on a podcast!
That was a fun, hour-long conversation about science fiction, anthologies, and why writing doesn’t have to be a solo venture. Good times.
If anyone wants to hear what I sound like, go here!
If anyone wants to also be a guest on the podcast, go here!
I recommend both.
