FOTD #030 : barbie pagoda! (podoserpula miranda)

the barbie pagoda is a fungus in the family amylocorticiaceae. it was found in new caledonia in 2012. it grows in the soil & is associated with the oak gum plant.

the big question : can i bite it?? though the edibility is unknown, it is advised that you do not eat this fungus as it is critically endangered.

p. miranda description :

"its common name is the barbie pagoda fungus due to its brilliant pink colour, similar to cotton candy, & multi-tiered appearance, with 3 to 6 pilea stacked one above the other & separated by about one-half inch (about one cm) of stem between pilea, & reaching a height of four inches (ten centimeters)."

Finished Funguary 2022, just in time for next year’s, haha. Had what I thought was the brilliant idea of jamming the remaining mushrooms into a short comic, and then sat on the rough sketches for months. Learned a lot about the comic making process, future attempts will be faster!

Would you look at that? Today marks the last of the weird-themed #Funguary prompts and the beginning of a new weekly theme tomorrow! In the meantime, though, today’s featured mushroom is the lovely Podoserpula Pusio!

You may perhaps recall that I did a Podoserpula Miranda artwork for last year’s #Funguary challenge, yes? These are apparently the only two known species of mushrooms in the Podoserpula family - and yet another species commonly found in Australia and New Zealand (seems like they’ve got a lot of freaky fungi over in that corner of the world)…

Do you like the showgirl vibes I gave this girl? In last year’s Podoserpula Miranda artwork, I made my girl’s dress look like it was made from the fungus, but I decided to go a different direction with this one. Another name commonly used for the Podoserpula mushrooms is “Pagoda fungus”, which kinda got me thinking about the elaborate sets, headpieces, and costumes showgirls use - and voila! 😄

Because it IS fascinating!

For example, this

Is podoserpula miranda, which is commonly known as Barbie pagoda fungus. It's found in New Caledonia and we don't know too much about it! It was only first described int the late 2000's-early '10s.

The fact that we don't know much and that we somehow missed it until recently is what fascinates me—how long has it been here and we've simply been oblivious to it's existence? To see but not be seen—there is truly so much of the natural world that we do not understand or have not even discovered yet. The world truly is ever bountiful for knowledge seekers.

This is officially the last week of #Funguary , and the theme for this week is cute/pretty fungi - so we’re starting off strong with Podoserpula Miranda!

These mushrooms are also known as Barbie Pagoda mushrooms, and if you look up photos of them, you can see why. Tbh, Podoserpula fungi (either these ones or Podoserpula Pusio) are just so freakin’ pretty - and apparently, they were only discovered in 2012/2013! Unfortunately, they’re also critically endangered due to forests being cleared and farm animals being introduced in their habitat… 🙁
