FOTD #027 : poison fire coral! (podostroma cornu-damae)
poison fire coral is a coral fungus in the family hypocreaceae. this fungus is native to korea & japan, but has recently been spotted in papua new guinea, indonesia & some parts of australia !!
the big question : it is edible?? NOT AT ALL >:-( this fungus is fatally toxic & contains several strong mycotoxins. (more info below the cut if you want to see)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
p. cornu-damae description :
"the poison fire coral consists of a coral-like fruit body. the arms of the coral are orange to bright red & grow vertically from the ground."
[images : source, source & source] [fungus description : done by me, since i could not find a description online]
"fun" fact : ''symptoms associated with consumption of this fungus include stomach pains, changes in perception, decrease in the number of leukocytes & thrombocytes, peeling skin on the face, hair loss, & shrinking of the cerebellum, resulting in speech impediment & problems with voluntary movement. in another instance, an autopsy revealed multiple organ failure, including acute kidney failure, liver necrosis & disseminated intravascular coagulation.''

Poison Fire Coral
Me, Digital, May 2022
Yes, it's oversized mushrooms again. Just a quick painting of tree-sized poison fire coral mushrooms after a long and exhausting weekend of all day classes and a Monday with 90% relative humidity.

Poison Fire Coral
Tumblr media
Its scientific name is Podostroma cornu-damae. This fungus/mushroom is one of my favorites. It is well-known as being one of the world’s most deadly mushrooms. It is most commonly found in Asia, and when I showed Akko a picture of it, she said that she had seen them growing in her hometown in Japan. Fortunately for her, she wasn’t stupid enough to eat it.
She may have touched it though... Her reaction to this picture was certainly upset.
If you eat them, your organs fail. Common symptoms include stomach pain, peeling skin, hair loss, low blood pressure, liver necrosis, acute kidney failure, and eventually death. They can also cause respiratory failure, and it has been said that it can shrink the brain.
It is often mistaken for an edible type of mushroom called Ganoderma lucidum. It is very dangerous even in tiny amounts, and it releases toxins straight into your skin if you touch it. I take interest in this type of mushroom because this is the only known poisonous mushroom in which the toxins can be absorbed through the skin and cause horrible symptoms that can lead to death, just as if someone were to eat it. Though touching it will usually lead to symptoms showing up much later, and you are less likely to die than if you were to eat it.
Oh, and @thereal-amandaoneill, you better tell your friend @blazestarninja13 to be careful. These wonderfully deadly fungi have started to pop up in Australia.
And who knows where they may show up next...

Ok! :D
the indigo milk cap mushroom gets it's name from the blue milk like substance it "bleeds" upon being cut open. They are typically found in coniferous forests after heavy rainfall and despite their out of place color, are in fact edible and harmless!
Podostroma Cornu-Damae is one of the most poisonous fungi. Residing in southern Asia, this rare mushroom is the cause of multiple deaths in Japan and Korea.  Trichothecene mycotoxins can be found in the bright red fruiting bodies of the mushrooms.  Trichothecene mycotoxins often result in organ failures, low blood pressure, peeling skin, hair loss, and sometimes death if all symptoms are left untreated.
Those are the newests mushrooms i've learned about.
OMG MUSHROOMS ARE UR SPECIAL INTEREST?? THATS SO COOL OMG /gen
oooooo that sounds so cool! i think ive heard about the milk cap before but i’ve never researched them very much

Rating Poisonous Mushrooms
Tumblr media
Amanita Muscaria
Not gonna lie that looks like a pretty awesome mushroom. This is the kind of mushroom you’d see in an idyllic fairy tale that the frog warned you not to eat, but you ate it anyway and now your firstborn is cursed by the Evil Priestess of the Forest.
8/10

Pleurocybella porrigens
As if the name wasn’t enough to get you excited (the actual name is Angel Wing), the shape!!!! Looks so soft!!! I could stroke it forever. I mean, despite the fact that it’s super poisonous and this one guy who ate it died shortly afterwards of brain disease, it looks like a very nice mushroom. I would definitely like to see it grow on a time lapse.

Podostroma Cornu-damae
Nope nope nope nope nope I do not like this mushroom. They look like tongues. TONGUES. Coming out of the soil. This is enough to make me hate Mother Nature. Ew ew ew ew ew. Also some of the symptoms if you ate these are very similar to radiation sickness.
(Edit: my friend said that they look a lot like gnome hats and if you pull them up you'll have a very angry gnome. Much better than tongues.)

Conocybe Filaris
Now this is a better mushroom. Not too sure about the colour, which reminds me of stagnant water, the shape looks great. Very bendy. The shape would be ideal for catching little dewdrops in.

The Destroying Angel
First off, what an awesome name. I would actually give anything to have a name like that. But, no, it’s given to a mushroom. The mushroom probably doesn’t even know that it’s been given a name. Anyway, it doesn’t really look that poisonous. It’s just an average mushroom, and it looks like you could definitely pick that up when you’re foraging, and put it in your omelette the next morning. Except that you would probably die after that because it’s responsible for a large proportion of mushroom-related deaths. This is slightly off-topic, but imagine having to explain that your friend was killed by The Destroying Angel, and everyone thinks that it’s something amazing and extreme, except that it’s just a little white mushroom.
9.5/10

A rare and deadly fungus, the only one that can poison a human from mere touch, has just showed up where nobody expected - in suburban Queensland, in the far north of Australia.
Originally discovered in China in 1895, the reddish-orange poison fire coral (Podostroma cornu-damae) is predominantly encountered in Asia, including Korea, Japan, and the Java Islands.
When even a tiny amount is touched or consumed, it can cause your skin to peel off, your hair to fall out, your brain to shrink, and a whole lot of other terrifying and potentially lethal symptoms.
"I thought 'no, this can't be it because this is in Australia' — it's not known to be in Australia," the self-proclaimed fungi fanatic who found the mushroom told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Zeza springs into Vladimir's study, hands all but overflowing with moss, ivy, roots, and leaves. However, in the center of her hands is a grouping of orange mushrooms and much more oddly shaped red mushrooms that look more like coral almost. "Vladimir look at what I've made! Conocyde filaris and Podostroma cornu-damae! Such little darlings! And so poisonous too!" Her dream-like voice is very excited, seeming specifically because the mushrooms are poisonous.
Random ploppy ask // always accepting.
@awoken-lights
The noble was reading one of his many tomes in his quiet study. A few candles were lit. Preferring the dim light as he read his notes that were accompanied with a cup of wine. As he heard the excited footsteps making their way to him, he tilted his head up to see Zeza.
The item that was in her hand caught his eye. Studying it in detail so that he would put it down on one of his journals. Taking note on how poisonous this thing really was. Also questioning Zeza for holding it so close to her.
“Very beautiful, my dear.” He said in a silky tone. “Although, I’m concerned about your health. You’re holding something....poisonous....”

Jade what’s your favorite mushroom?
Hmmmm, that’s hard to say as there are so many excellent species. If I had to pick a few though, I would probably go with the Podostroma cornu-damae, Amanita bisporigera, or perhaps the Galerina marginata. -Jade

Top 5 mushrooms that will remind you of Donald Trump.
5. Bolbitius titubans (Yellow Fieldcap)
Tumblr media
Much like the president this inedible mushroom is recognized by it’s yellow top that starts to turn white with age. It’s also a coprophilius fungus, which means it likes to surround itself with shit.
4. Gyromitra esculenta (False Morel)
Tumblr media
This little shroomie may not resemble Trump, but if you see one you may mistake it for his shriveled up brain, which fell out of his ear and is now rotting away in the grass, full of nothing but poison.
3. Amanita phalloides (Death Cap)
Tumblr media
Not only is this mushroom one of the most vile and poisonous of it’s kind, but it also hosts a disgusting yellow mess up top.
2. Pleurocybella porrigens (Angel Wings)
Tumblr media
Don’t let the name fool you! This lumpy white lode looks like Supreme Leader Trump with his shirt off, plus it tricked the whole world with it’s ability to poison the population. It was long thought to be edible, with no reported poisonings for years. The game changed in 2004 when 60 people in Japan fell ill after trusting this little bastard, and more than 15 died.
1. Podostroma Cornu-damae
Tumblr media
This fella looks almost as much like an orange dick as Trump. If thats not enough to earn it the #1 spot on the list, take a bite and experience the physical analog to the emotions trump makes you feel.
3. Depletion of blood cells
2. Hair loss
1. Peeling off of facial skin
