The Price May Be Right - Number 4
Welcome to “The Price May Be Right!” I’ve been counting down My Top 31 Favorite Vincent Price Performances & Appearances! The countdown will cover movies, TV productions, and many more forms of media. We’re getting closer to the end now… Today we focus on Number 4: Prince Prospero, from Masque of the Red Death.
Tumblr media
Alongside “Comedy of Terrors,” this is quite possibly my favorite Vincent Price movie of all time. It is, without any doubt, my favorite entry in the Corman-Poe Cycle of features from AIP. Combining elements of the titular story with another tale from Poe, “Hop-Frog” (here referred to as “Hop-Toad,” presumably so the character doesn’t sound like a children’s game), “Masque of the Red Death” is easily the most thought-provoking and philosophical of all the Poe movies. It’s a film that seems less interested in outright scaring you, and more interested in posing a lot of interesting and unnerving questions. It’s a film about faith, corruption, mortality, ethics, and karmic justice, and the way it presents its different themes and ideas is still just as interesting today as it was back when it was made. In fact, in some ways, I would argue this movie is stronger than it ever was before. Released in 1964 – the year after “Comedy of Terrors” – the story focuses on Price’s character, Prince Prospero. The Prince is the cruel and sadistic ruler of some unknown province in Italy, and the leader of a Satanic cult. When a plague known as the Red Death – which makes people sweat blood till they die from exsanguination – strikes his kingdom, Prospero summons all the members of his cult to his palace, and locks them all away inside his castle to try and escape the plague. Also involved is a young lady named Francesca, whom Prospero kidnaps after her father and fiancé each try to stand up to him. Prospero has all three brought to his castle, to try and devise some unusual punishment for the two men, all while he tries to teach Francesca the truth of the world, as he sees it. Prospero is a truly fascinating villain. In some ways, he is one of the most evil characters Price ever played: he is callous to the core, willing to stab virtually anyone in the back and showing neither pity nor remorse for any of the evil acts he commits. When people who think themselves his friends die either directly or indirectly due to his actions, he shows no recognition of the relationship they used to share. But at the same time, there is a deeper philosophy at work with him: Prospero’s belief is that people are inherently wicked, and that the world is a cruel place of injustice and despair. He believes that God is dead, and that Satan already rules the universe. So, he behaves in a manner he believes would please Satan, just the way any Christian tries to behave in a manner they believe would please God. There are glimmers of something less than totally evil inside Prospero, however. He seems to value true innocence, in a backwards sort of way, and shows respect for anyone who can match the fervor of his own horrible faith. His relationship with Francesca is truly intriguing: it’s a sort of twisted and warped take on “Beauty and the Beast,” as Prospero admires Francesca’s faith and purity. And it is true admiration: when one of his allies suggests he enjoys corrupting her, Prospero replies, “Not corrupting…instructing.” At the same time, while Francesca is frightened of Prospero and appalled by his actions, she does come to have a sense of understanding towards him and his cynical outlook on the world. She is the closest thing to love Prospero has ever felt, and he is someone she realizes is more than just a monster. Prospero also shows other signs of right thinking: he refuses to harm children, and whenever he kills people who might be afflicted with the red death, he seems to consider it a mercy. In my opinion, Prospero is one of the greatest movie villains of all time; an underappreciated cinematic titan of tyranny that really deserves more credit. And it’s just as much a testament to Price as an actor, as well as the writing and direction, that he is such a uniquely depraved and yet intriguing character. Vincent plays the character absolutely pitch perfect, rarely hamming anything up too much (I say “rarely” because…well…it’s Vincent Price), and giving Prospero an elegance and calculating intellectuality that belies his more sinister qualities. He balances the character’s vulnerabilities and cruel heartlessness splendidly, so that we do come to empathize with Prospero, despite his unholy and horrid ways. When this villain meets his defeat, it is satisfying, yet also saddening. That is a sign you have created a truly magnificent evildoer. Tomorrow, the countdown enters the Top 3!

Revenge-
In the wee hours of the evenings glow
I laugh at the thought of him think he has control
Come back when ever like a revolving door
Thinking I couldn't possibly do or dream for more
And yet here I am with words in store
Well throw this next punch but really who's keeping score
The person you're dealing with is not the same as before
Forgiveness from God is what you should ask for
For karma is the disher of this cold war
Your dish will be Siberian winter a Russian encore
While I'm at my own table VIP eating wild boar
Because the best type of revenge is paired with a 1982 bourdeaux

The Price May Be Right - Number 6
Welcome to “The Price May Be Right!” I’ve been counting down My Top 31 Favorite Vincent Price Performances & Appearances! The countdown will cover movies, TV productions, and many more forms of media. Today we focus on Number 6: Roderick Usher, from House of Usher.
Tumblr media
This was the first film of the Corman-Poe Cycle by AIP, and it’s still one of the best entries of the bunch. It was also – at least in film – the first time Vincent Price worked in a Poe-related project (as far as I’m aware). Naturally, the importance of this 1960 feature – both for Vincent, and for the recognition of Poe’s work in cinema – can hardly be exaggerated. And while the previous pick on the countdown, “The Pit and the Pendulum,” is in some ways superior to this venture…I personally think Vincent’s role and performance in this particular tale is even better than it was in the later picture. “House of Usher” is a more or less straightforward adaptation of Poe’s story “Fall of the House of Usher.” I say more or less because, while it generally follows the plot and even adapts the characters of Poe’s story in a generally faithful manner, there is one big difference to the tale: in the book, the main character (an unnamed narrator) is visiting the house as a friend to Roderick Usher. That is not the case in the movie: in the movie, our main character is one Philip Winthrop (played by Mark Damon), who comes to the titular mansion to seek the hand of his intended fiancé: Roderick’s brother, Madeline. For numerous reasons, however, Roderick refuses to let Madeline leave the house. He repeatedly tries to get Winthrop to leave, but Winthrop refuses to depart without his beloved, and Madeline pleads with Roderick to let him stay for at least a while. As Philip spends a few days in his fiance’s ancestral home, he soon discovers the horrible history of the Usher family. He must now try to get Madeline to leave, before the madness that seems to infect her lineage consumes her whole life… In many ways, the film bears several resemblances to the later “Pit and the Pendulum”: a young man coming to a spooky place full of secrets, trying to solve some kind of mystery and help a woman he is close to in some fashion. Similarly, in some ways, Price’s character of Don Medina in the later picture is similar to Roderick…but with one key difference. Don Medina is a victim as much as a villain; that cannot be said for Roderick Usher. Roderick is a classic case of what might be termed a sympathetic villain: like Don Medina, he is a tortured soul, teetering on the brink of madness due to personal problems. The difference is that Don Medina is someone trying to avoid the shadow, and who ultimately succumbs: Roderick is someone who has, on some level, already embraced the darkness. Indeed, that is perhaps the greatest tragedy of Roderick’s character: he’s someone who doesn’t WANT to be the bad guy, but feels he HAS to be. He says a couple of times that he holds no ill will toward Philip, and he is clearly highly devoted to his sister (at times to an unsettling degree), but he fears the results of what a marriage between her and Winthrop could lead to. His thoughts are plagued at all times by the supposed curse on his family line, and his life is one spent in constant torment, as he is afflicted with a strange condition that heightens his senses to a dangerous degree. He cannot bear to taste anything but bland gruel; he can’t stand to be touched because of how it hurts his skin; every sound is magnified for him to an alarming rate. You really do feel sorry for the guy, because he’s clearly a depressed wreck who feels he’s trapped in a gloomy world. What makes him the villain, ultimately, is his inability to accept that there could be a chance for others to have happiness he cannot. The extreme lengths he goes to in order to break off the romance are what truly make him the bad guy by the end. The other major difference between Roderick and Don Medina is the way they are performed. With Don Medina, Price gives an intense performance that brings his full “ham energy” out, but with Roderick, he delivers a much more delicate, subtle, and eerily methodical performance. Given the aforementioned affliction, Roderick is a character who works in a claustrophobic manner: his voice is soft and often kept at the same near-monotonous level, yet the little inflections and the ways Vincent plays with the syllables allow him to turn every word into masterful poetry. His expression I almost eternally set in a grim-faced scowl, yet the smallest changes to the eyes and mouth mean so much as a result. In the moments where Roderick’s full horror at the situations around him comes out – when he suddenly breaks through his own armor and shows the torment underneath – it becomes truly startling. He is in equal parts an extremely creepy and unnerving figure in the story, due to his appearance and his demeanor…and yet a tragic and pitiful character as well, as we realize he truly believes what he’s saying and doing is what is necessary, if not always right. Those are often among the most compelling antagonists, and this is no exception. It’s definitely a highlight for Vincent’s work with Poe. Tomorrow, the countdown continues into the Top 5!

People who say "I don't like asoue bc it's formulaic" miss the point bc
-it starts as a formula, a cycle of the Baudelaires being abused and mistreated bc IT'S A CYCLE THAT THEY'RE STUCK IN!! A cycle of evil and ignorence. They're being tossed around by the world and they need to get out of the cycle themselves.
-the cycle: they go to a new guardian, led by Mr. Poe, who ignores the problems about the situation. Count Olaf is stalking them, trying to kill the Baudelaires and steal their fortune.
-as is the rules with poetry and writing, you have to repeat something a few times to mess around with the formula, which you see is changed as early as the Miserable Mill. There's a poetic quality to the repetition, as well as when and how it changes.
-as it goes on, you see their passiveness being increasingly replaced with action that culminates at the end of the Vile Village, where they run away. In doing so, they've cut off the "new guardian" element to the cycle.
-they're trying to save the Quagmires and figure things out on their own. But two crucial elements to their cycle haven't been broken: they still are trying to contact Mr. Poe and they are still being hunted by Count Olaf.
-in the Grim Grotto, they break Mr. Poe out of the cycle.
-in the first chapter of the Bad Beginning, Mr. Poe meets the children on Briny Beach to inform them of the death of their parents. They come with him.
-at the end of Grim Grotto, they meet him again at Briny Beach and refuse to come, choosing instead to listen to a mysterious stranger and coded message. They choose autonomy. They choose to try to learn and figure things out. Active, not passive.
-in the Penultimate Peril is an effort to cut ties with Count Olaf once and for all as well as obtaining roles from both sides of VFD.
-but they can't get rid of Olaf and they can't let him go. Bc the last part of the cycle needs to be permanently put to rest.
-YES; Olaf hunts them throughout every book. That's. The. Point.
-Olaf needed to DIE before they could leave the island in The End.
-Olaf needed to die before they could move on.
-Olaf's death cut the final current in their cycle, ending the formula and therefore ending the series. Cutting out all the "repetitive" elements of the series made it finally end.
-they broke the cycle. That's why they could be free.
UGH I have so many thoughts
One day I'll write up this theory more cohesiveness.

*slides into your asks* you're taking reader prompts, you say? 👀
well, if you feel so inspired, I'd like to offer:
"For someone who claims to not be a cuddler, you couldn't keep your hands to yourself all night." + Poe (shocking, ik 🤭)
Please and thank youuuu 💖
thank you for the request hon! word count clocks in at juuuuust over 1k. no warnings besides a lot of fluff.
Tumblr media
"I'm not really a cuddler, actually.”
Poe glances up from his datapad — patrol rosters for the next week are pulled up, with a blank space where Niv's name used to be before he wound up in the medbay with the flu — to where you're standing at the side of his cot, appraising it like you would a ticking bomb.
(Poe would know, he's seen you disarm one.)
“You're not?” It shocks him, somehow, even though now that you mention it - yeah, he hasn't really seen you be that physically affectionate with anyone before.
Well, anyone besides him. You didn't mind his penchant for being touchy, seemed to like the press of his body besides yours when he sat with you at meals. You smiled every time he kissed the side of your head before he left for a flight, and pulled him into bone-crushing hugs when he made it back.
So he just assumed that meant you're as snuggly as he is. He'd kind of been counting on it ever since he invited you over, to sleep in his quarters for the first time since you became a thing.
(That's what you keep calling it, a thing. It's so early in that it's hard to say if this is going to be a long-term relationship, but it's been long enough you both know it isn't a fling.)
“No,” you reply, monosyllabic as you pinch the fabric of your pillow between your fingers. You'd brought your own because, according to you, his was lumpy. “I'm not, is that - I mean is that going to be a problem?”
Poe watches you for a moment, trying to parse out the complicated expression on your face; which you don't seem to like, because you drop your gaze to the floor, as if you think he'll see something he doesn't like — which is just kriffing impossible.
"Nah, it's not," Poe says eventually, clicking off his datapad. The clock is rapidly approaching double digits and he's got an early meeting with the General, so the rest of the roster can wait. Hell, he'll fly in Niv's place himself if it means he can catch some shut eye tonight. “I just hope you don't mind if I am, I can't really - turn it off in my sleep.” He exhales a nervous laugh as he says it, scratching the back of his neck.
To his relief, you smile. “I kind of figured you would be. You ready for bed?”
Poe's already beelining for his side when he replies, "Maker, yes," and you only laugh in return, crawling under his scratchy blanket and dropping your pillow beside his.
You both face each other, your face becoming shadowed as BB-8 dims the lights for the night cycle, and Poe seeks out your hand, gently pulling it up so he can hold it between the two of you, the edges of the pillowcases tickling your skin.
“Goodnight, Poe,” you whisper, the ghost of a smile on your face as you squeeze his hand and close your eyes.
Tumblr media
You wake slowly, reluctantly. You're warm, in that wonderful way that means the rest of the world is chilly, and there's a comforting firmness beside you that you have no trouble burrowing closer to — you don't remember situating your pillow like that, don't recall falling asleep hugging it, but you must have because there's something that you're clinging to like you are the last vestiges of your sleep —
And then you hear a chuckle, rough and full of affection, and feel the way your pillow dips with the inhale and exhale of breath, and all at once you remember that you're not in your bed.
Prying open your eyes, you tilt your head back and realize that at some point in the middle of the night, you'd done precisely what you said you wouldn't: you'd sprawled out almost entirely on top of Poe, one arm flung over his torso, legs tangled together, your head cushioned by the joint of his arm where it meets his shoulder.
"You know, for someone who claims you're not a cuddler,” Poe begins, tipping his chin so he can look down at you. "You couldn't keep your hands to yourself last night.”
Your face beats up with mortification and you groan, turning your head to bury it against his chest, just over his pec. He didn't have to phrase it like that. "Sorry, I didn't mean to hold you hostage.”
You feel his frame tense, and then he very gently nudges you back, shifting so you're both back on your sides. Your leg is still wedged between his, and you do your best to ignore that, which Poe makes easy, what with his easy smile.
"Hey, I distinctly remember asking you if you minded if I was snuggly. No need to apologize for beating me at my own game.”
You huff a laugh and bring your hand up to cup his cheek. “I didn't know I would. No one's ever accused me of being cuddly before, you know? And I've never had anyone who -” was as tactile as you craved, before Poe.
Even with your aborted explanation, Poe seems to get it, because he nods. "Glad you could discover it with me.”
“I'm discovering a lot of things with you,” you murmur, leaning up to press your lips against his in a lazy kiss. He tastes like sleep, but you genuinely don't care, not when his warm, warm hand comes up to cradle your jaw, and he's smiling against your mouth.
He's a little late for that briefing with Leia, though, because now that you know you like cuddling, you're extremely reluctant to let him go — and Poe isn't any better, coming back even after his shower to kiss you some more, until you're having to push him away and towards his door with the promise he can kiss you some more tonight.
It's definitely not a fling. But you think it's growing into something more than just a thing.
