It was just a kiss. It was just a kiss. It was just a kiss.
You’d misunderstood, you’d read the situation wrong, you’d seen incorrectly. It was just a kiss. It was just a kiss. It was just a kiss.
Your radio crackled, “Green Leader, checking in. We’re manoeuvring in 5. Call out.”
“Green Two check.”
“Green Three check.”
 It was just a kiss.
“Green Four check.”
 It was just a-
“Green Five check.”
Just a-
“Green Six check.”
Just-
“Green Seven,” you swallow. “Check.”
It wasn’t just a kiss.
You patted your helmet twice and rolled your neck, breathing deeply as you settled in. On your left, you could see some of Blue Squadron.
This mission was straightforward - on a holopad.
Two teams to escort The Harbringer, the resistance supply ship. It had been damaged by a rogue blast from a tie fighter just as it jumped to hyperspace and had had to make an emergency landing on one of Tre’Ral’s desert moons.
The crew on board had managed to fix all they could. But without proper materials, there was little chance of the ship making it out of the moon’s thick atmosphere and entering hyperspace. So Blue and Green Squadrons had been dispatched. Blue 1-4 had already made contact, jump-starting The Harbringer enough to get it airborne.
Due to Tre’Ral’s sun and planet density, the gravity on the moons was a little stronger than most world’s atmospheric pressure.
Green Leader, Sena, had repeated through briefing at how this would affect flying. How to be ready for it. And she hadn’t been wrong, it was different flying here. Tougher. And you loved it.
You’d grown up on Para, a planet with a high gravity density. You’d learnt to fly there well before you’d flown in space. Being here on this desolate moon almost felt like home. Your movements seemed smoother, precise. No longer needing to overcorrect for your naturally ingrained harsh movements. No longer spinning out and fighting low gravity, finally working with the tide.
The manoeuvre would see the ships escort The Harbringer out of the moon’s atmosphere and then the rest of Blue squadron would form a sort of 3D star formation around the cargo ship. All jumping to hyperspace at the same time to carry it along with them.
Simple.
In theory.
Everyone had spoken about how practically textbook it was, how easy.
But then, of course, why was Green Squadron going?
No one at the briefing had asked, why would they when the answer was so obvious. This part of the quadrant was teething with First Order. With a slow, busted supply ship you were all practically screaming for them to come and play target practice.
You swallow.
You should be focusing on that, on the mission. Instead of the utter nonsense that was ricocheting around your head and piercing your heart.
I hadn’t just been a kiss.
You and Poe had gotten together clumsily, three months ago, your normal awkwardness drowned out by so much Polanis Red that you almost couldn’t see straight. It had been after the battle of Hurthwen, a nasty dogfight that had everyone hyped up on adrenaline.
He had been drunk when he kissed you, you remembered that.
Maybe he had thought… maybe he had believed he was kissing her instead.
It made a lot more sense.
Sena was the Green Leader, she was a great pilot. One to be reckoned with. She was kind, she was fun, she was beautiful. She and Poe had joined the resistance together, risen the ranks together. Basically inseparable. Always laughing and joking. She had been in the same squad as Poe, under his command before she was promoted to leading one of her own.
They had always been close. Always. Best friends.
Sickness bubbled in your throat.
You remembered Frizz and Hank talking offhandedly, well before you and Poe were a thing. Both of them sure that Sana and Poe were dating or ‘knocking boots’ as Frizz had so elegantly put it.
“Two people can just be friends, you know.” You’d said, trying to hide your little crush on the commander.
“Yeah,” Frizz laughed, “But not them. You seen them together?”
Hank chortled.
Nonsense. You’d brushed it off then. Allowed it to creep into your thoughts when it was dark and the base was quiet. When Poe’s breathing was soft and light behind you, his arm around your waist.
Him and Sana just made a lot more sense than him and you.
“Yeah, but not them. You seen them together?”
Yeah. Now you had.
The Harbringer came into view over the horizon. The seemingly endless stretch of desert was cut through in the distance by a fearsome outcrop of crocks, leading up into a field of formidable mountains.
Blue 1-4 were already hooked up to the cargo ship, all five hoovering moving together as they flew towards you to meet.
You wouldn’t have said things were difficult with you and Poe. Well, you wouldn’t have said that before. It was complicated for everyone on the base, most staff were on different call schedules, off-world or on a mission at all times. Having a relationship wasn’t straightforward. There were stretches where you wouldn’t even be on the same planet for days, but…
But you had thought it was…
It didn’t matter.
You’d gone back to the briefing room, just before take off. You’d wanted to tap the main holoscreen twice, for luck. A little ritual you’d adopted early on. Most pilots were a superstitious bunch.
That’s when you’d seen them. Sana and Poe. Locked in a tight embrace, their lips pressed together in a deep kiss.
Your heartbeat had thundered so loud you’d been surprised they hadn’t heard it. But they’d been too preoccupied to notice your presence.
It was cliche but time had almost slowed, calmed and stretched like the moment you take aim, the second before you fired your ship's canons.
A flash of the control panel had flickered into your mind when you saw them, your fingers twitching as if you had the trigger in your hands.
You’d turned and left without a sound. Without a word. Without letting them know you saw. Leaving them to… whatever they did next.
Was it their first kiss? One of many? Had this been going on well before Poe had taken your hand and led you outside so he could clumsily name all the constellations, making up new ones and backstories to make you smile?
“That one here, you see it?”
“Yeah?”
“That one’s the best one, best in the sky. It’s orange and it’s right next to that other orange one, like they’re holding hands.”
You’d laughed.
“That’s me and you Moonbeam.”
Moonbeam. That stupid nickname.
You’d gone to your room quickly, the one that you and Poe shared, and taken off the necklace he’d given you.
“I want you to wear it for luck, Moonbeam.”
That stupid smile he’d given you as he’d slipped it from his own neck and onto yours. That stupid kiss he’d given you after. You’d thought that expression was cute when you’d seen it, pure. Now it just seemed like he’d been laughing at you, playing some sick joke. ‘How long can I string someone along?’, ‘how far can I go before they realise it’s all pretend?’
You’d left the necklace with the ring slipped through on the small set of shelves in the corner, the one Poe normally kept his holopad on.
It was idiotic, but your neck felt… empty without it. Cold. Every now and then you touched at where the chain normally lay.A subconscious action only brought to the forefront of your mind by the sensation of your own skin instead of metal.
Something caught your eye in the distance, a flash of sunlight glinting off the horizon. Dread twisted in your stomach as realisation dawned a second earlier than your scanners. The extra gravitational pressure and high quantity of magnetic metals in the sand affected everyone’s ship computers, causing a brief information delay.
Your alarm sounded out inside your ship, the radar blinking into life as tie fighters approached from the rock outcrop. They’d used the high mineral concentration to hide their energy signatures.
“Fuck.”
The radio screamed into life, orders out pouring over orders. Blue squadron rushed into position while Green scrambled.
“Blue in place now!”
“It’s gonna be rushed, but we haven’t got a choice!”
“No time!” “Incoming!” “Green half split! Evens left, odds right, let’s keep those fighter’s off The Harbringer and Blue squadron! Gamma pattern!”
“How far away is the Delta?”
“Calling in attack pattern!”
You swing to the right, falling in with Hank and Petal and bank hard, it takes less than a second for you to notice that your squad's movements aren’t as precise and well-timed as usual. The stronger gravity throwing everyone, except you, off their game.
That didn’t bode well.
You climb for a second, punching hard on the acceleration to get some height and a clear view of the oncoming and flick on your targeting system. The image glitches, doesn’t hold steady even as you focus. Off by half a fraction.
Shots fire out from both sides, most missing.
“Targeting not working!”
“It’s out!”
“I can’t get a clear shot!” “The read is malfunctioning!”
“Half a click 4/8!” You shout, as you take your shot, hitting two tie fighters head-on.
“Good shot Green 7!” You can hear the joy and relief in Sana’s voice. “Half a click 4/8, you’ll all have to manually adjust!”
You dive, swirling around two fighters before skimming close to the ground, trying to draw their attention away from the cargo ship. You spin, slamming your control harder than you would need to in any other situation as you turn and spike past another fighter, taking out one in the process.
“Wooooo!” Hank yells over the intercom.
You laugh. “Bet you never thought you wished you grew up on Para right?”
“Every day new things surprise me.” He banks left, you right, Petal dives down.
It’s too much of a rush, everything all at once, patterns and shots flying, your ship’s systems screaming as you push the engines a little too hard.
The tie fighters aren’t moving as fast as they normally do, bogged down even more than the x wings by the gravity. They can’t make their normal quick turns and it’s affecting their strike patterns.
Good.
But there’s so, so many of them.
Explosions fly debris out, and you climb higher. Needing a clear view and unable to rely on your targeting systems.
More shots fly out, The Harbringer is taking a battering but so far its shielding is holding the hull together.
The radio keeps screaming, overlapping voices that blur into background noise. You’re trained to only hear your call signal, direct messages. You vear off, narrowingly missing a blast to your wing.
“-On my tail.” Frizz’s voice cuts through the noise, a sharp stab of dread slicing you open as you turn, automatically looking to the reader, it’s still not clear.
You climb, twist, fall, see a Green ship, followed tightly by two fighters. Accelsorate, bank. You fire. You’re aiming in a panic now, not adjusting right, not breathing through.
The shot hits one, before you have to swerve to avoid being struck head-on.
“Thanks 7!” Cril yells over the speaker, managing to shake the other fighter.
There’s a scream, a crackle of sound over the system. A sound you know too well. You see the ship crash into the desert, exploding before it even hits the ground as the a tie fighter’s shots hit home.
Frizz.
“No…”
“Check!” Sana yells, unable to tell who went down with the system glitching. “Green Leader!”
You swerve around another fighter, everything moving so fast, too fast.
“Green Two check!” Cril.
“Green Three check!” Petal.
Nothing.
“Green Four!” Sana yells. No call replies. Balna. Not Frizz.
The momentary rush of relief at Frizz being alive is cut horribly short by the image of Balna’s kind face that bursts behind your eyes.
You bank left, right, swerve, take aim, twist.
There’s a chance, a good chance that you’ll win. All of Blue is in place, The Harbringer is moving up with them. The tie fighters are taking more hits than the resistance, their less aerodynamic design hampering them more than usual with this gravity.
All you need is…
Another alarm.
“Oh… fuck.” You slam on your intercom. “Z-Fighter!”
A chorus of yells answer you.
A Z-fighter, a quick moving ship a fraction bigger than The Harbringer, with two powerful front guns. A few shots would take the cargo ship out completely.
And with how slow the supply ship was moving, that wouldn’t be hard.
The Z-fighter storms in, moving fast but not firing, they were obviously having problems with their targeting too, needing a close clear shot.
“Take out the main cannons!” Sana yells, the panic in her voice cutting through the chaos. You turn, aim, take out a tie fighter but have to veer up at the last second. Twist.
Someone comes in after you, aiming for the cannons, a fighter clips their side and they can’t correct quick enough. They spiral off, their ship crashing into the Z-fighter. Obliterated on impact. The Z-fighter seemingly unaffected.
You loop back, adrenaline blinding you to everything, anything that’s not the goal. Take out the canons. Take out the canons. People are counting on you. Take out the canons.
You fire, a clear shot before you bank to the side to avoid a direct hit to your hull.
It’s not enough.
You need to pass again, and again. Other x wings flying in, taking shots, the gravity making them slow, imprecise. Only one blast hits and it’s not full on.You’re the only one hitting directly and it’s not enough.
It’s not enough. It’s not enough. It’s not enough.
There’s shouting and screaming, the zipping of the fighters as they cut through the sky. Someone yells your name and you don’t hear it.
Another hit lands. One canon out. Only one left. You can do this. The Harbringer is nearly in the upper atmosphere, they can jump from there. Just a few more seconds. You can do this.
“Black Leader!” Poe’s call sign cuts over the dim, followed by the call signs of half of the Red Squadron.
They must have scrambled after first contact.
The canon’s powering up, a quick glance to your panel tells you that The Harbringer’s shield is barely functioning. They won’t survive a direct hit. With how close they are and the Blue Squadron ships that are attached there’s no way they wouldn’t be pulled down too if The Harbringer fell.
The canon needs more than one hit to take it down, more than five. No way you can shoot five times before they fire.
You twist, full force. Pumping the acceleration. Fire. Fire. Fire. Three hit. You don’t slow down. Fire. Fire. Fire. They hit. The canon is still operational.
Sana is screaming orders, so many shots fire at the canon, none of them hit right, hit full on.
Two chances left.
One to fire. If it takes out the canon you just have enough time to serve up, to avoid getting smashed to bits.
Poe shouts for you over the intercom.
You don’t answer.
One to fire. If it doesn’t take out the canon then… then you crashing into it head on will.
Poe yells again, this time cutting over everyone else, sending you a direct call.
You don’t answer.
You fire. Hit.
Poe screams for you, his voice painful and panicked. He’s already worked out your plan before you had even thought of it.
The canon doesn’t go down.
You cut the call to him. Blocking out his signal. You don’t want Poe to think you did this for him.
You don’t want him to think you did this because of him.
“Green Seven!” Sana yells, seemingly knowing what you’re going to do.
Hank screams your name over the radio. It hurts. You think it’s the worst sound you’ve ever heard.
“Moonbeam!” Poe’s voice is ripped raw from yells, Sana has patched him through over her signal. You were wrong. That was the worst sound you’ve ever heard.
You dip at the last second, not hitting the canon straight on but smashing your right wing into it. The force surprises you, even though you braced for it. The impact sending you spiralling. You try to regain control, try to turn into the spin. Training taking over even though you're a wing and half a ship down.
Shouts over the radio, you barely make out-
“-cannon’s down-”
“-Jump!-”
A spark hits, your console explodes into flame, shards hit your side and you yell. Sky and sand tumbling over each other over and over, and you manage to hit the eject button.
The force rips you upwards, free briefly from your burning ship. But you’re too close to the floor, not enough time to slow down your velocity. There’s-
.
The impact of the ground hurts. Pain explodes along every nerve despite the ejection seat dampening. You scream.
Agony is everywhere, everything. You can’t feel anything else, can’t comprehend anything except floods of pain.
You hit your belt, falling out and to the desert floor. Looking up just enough to gauge where you are, where your ship fell. It’s an exploded, fireball mess far off. At least it’s not an immediate threat. You crawl to the side and sob.
There’s blood falling into the sand from your head, the right side of your face. You can’t see properly out of your eye and your left leg is definitely broken. Shattered. Still, you drag yourself forward, digging your hands in and pulling as something ribs and tears in your side, warm liquid soaking into your fight suit.
The resistance will jump to hyperspace, they’ll get out. They’ll make it.
You just needed to get away from your ejection seat, when the First Order doubles back they’ll see it, they’ll see you. You just needed to get to an outcrop. Hide.
Make it look like you had a weapon.
Make them shoot you first instead of taking you for questioning.
Can’t let them take you alive.
There's the faint sound of a ship somewhere above, landing gear coming down.
For a second you freeze, panic gripping your heart, you dig into the sand hard, pull, pull, pull  yourself closer towards the outcrop of rocks. The air seems to be leaving your lungs, your breathing ragged and hot.
You cough, red hitting the dirt, iron hitting your tongue.
You crawl, pull. The pain is making you light-headed. You gasp, trying to get in a full lung full of air. It's not enough. It's not enough. It's not enou…
.
When you open your eyes your first thoughts are simple. Clear.
I'm dead.
You were either shot in the head in the sand or simply succumbed to your wounds.
But then things begin to feel… fuzzy. Not painful, but not right either.
And that's when you smell the Bacta. And then the light starts to change to distorted shapes, and finally, you recognise Hank sitting next to you.
“You better not be dead too,” you whisper your voice dry from lack of use.
Hank jumps up, goes to grab your hand and then stops himself. There are tears in his eyes. He softly places his fingers on yours and you squeeze back.
“You're a fucking idiot you know that?” He grins and you laugh. Which hurts a little, but feels good.
“One sec,” he moves away just to speak to someone outside before he comes back. “I'm the one that picked you up, you know?”
“Now who's the fucking idiot?” You smile but your chest aches, heavy with the weight of his words. “You shouldn't have done that.” You whisper.
“What?”
“You were under fire, you should have just jumped-”
“I saw you eject. Saw you moving. You think I was just gonna leave you there?” He sits. “Besides, I was closest. The commander would have blown up the whole planet to get to you.”
You swallow, turning away slightly. Going cold at the mention of Poe.
Hank mistakes the look for guilt, and squeezes your hand again. “Hey, look,” he smiles, “you took out the canons, you're a fucking idiot but you know how to fly in heavy gravity.”
You snort.
He smiles.
“Who did we lose?”
Hank sighs, “three…”
You nod, closing your eyes for a moment.
“There-”
There was shouting from outside, a crash and then Poe stormed into the room, med staff close behind him.
You swallow, sickness building in your throat.
He looked awful, drawn out and worn thin like he hadn't slept or eaten in days. His eyes red.
He rushes forward, Hank moves out of the way, so Poe can take your hand in his. He leans forward and kisses you softly, carefully stroking your cheek, being gentle with your bandages.
“Moonbeam…” he mutters and you flinch back from him. He looks at you with sad, confused eyes.
“Look, I can only allow one visitor in here.” The med staff member says.
Hank stands, and speaks when you frown. “I'll see you later, Poe’s the one that hasn't left your side. The only reason he wasn't here when you woke was because I made him go take a shower.” Hank smiled, “you can thank me for that later.”
Both you and Poe are quiet as the others leave. Poe searching your face for something, while you look away.
“Moonbeam,” he says again softly, but there's an edge to his words that you're not used to. “What the fuck happened on that mission? What the fuck is this?” He holds up his hand, his necklace and ring wrapped around his palm. His eyes are shiny as he speaks. “Were you trying to kill yourself? What the fu-”
“Poe,” you breathe. Best to get it over quickly. “I saw.”
He frowns. “Saw? Saw what?”
“You and Sana, in the briefing room… before take off.”
The small frown on his forehead relaxes slightly for a moment as his eyebrows raise. “You… saw?”
You nod.
“You, but, I didn’t see you when I pushed her away?” His voice cracks at the end, a splinter running into the muscle of your heart.
“You pushed her away?”
“You didn’t see that?” He frowns again, blinking hard, “you just, just saw and walked away and what? Took this off?” He holds up the necklace again. A tear falls from his eye and he rubs it away furiously as if it had scorched his skin. “Just, just left it and… and…”
“I didn’t know you didn’t want it…” You say quietly, emotion is making your chest tight and constricted. “I didn’t know you didn’t want her…”
“What?” He breathes, moving closer and squeezing your hand. There’s disbelief in his voice, confusion. Anger, it’s deep down and controlled but it’s there. “No, look, she kissed me. I pushed her away, I, I even logged a report, I’ll pull up the god damned camera feed to show you.”
He’s not lying. His gaze is unwavering and he’s got that painfully earnest look in his eyes.
“You thought…” he shakes his head slightly, his voice pained, “you thought I’d-”
“You both make sense together.” You blurt out. “She’s… and you’re…” you shrug and sigh, on the verge of tears yourself. “You’re both the best of us.”
“No,” he shakes his head fiercely, “Moonbeam, no.” He wipes roughly at his eyes again, glancing down for a moment and you lightly touch his head.
He looks up instantly as you stroke his curls, still lightly damp.
“I’m sorry.” You whisper.
Poe shakes his head again, grabbing your hand and kissing your wrist. “I’m sorry.” He kicks off his shoes and clambers into bed next to you a little awkwardly. He’s trying to be careful, trying not to hurt you but needing closeness so badly it’s suffocating.
You scooch to the side as quickly as you can in your current state and lean into him as he wraps his body around you softly and kisses you sweetly.
“Love you, love you, love you,” he repeats after every kiss, pressing his lips to every part of your skin that he can reach.
“Why are you sorry?” You mutter as he holds you, “I’m the one that messed up.”
He shakes his head, “I’m sorry that I don’t make you realise how special you are, how perfect.” He kisses your cheek, “you’re the best of us Moonbeam.”
You tut but his grip tightens and he holds you tight.
“And one hell of a pilot.” He grins.
You scoff.
“You are.” He kisses you again.
You nuzzle against him, settling into his touch. Knots have formed in your chest, pain that’s loosening. His warmth is comforting. Home.
“Sana said she didn’t know I was in a relationship,” he says softly, resting his chin on the top of your head. “I don’t know if that’s true, but… I do believe her.”
You nod. “She’s a good person.”
He moves so he can look you in the eyes. “Please, Moonbeam, I… don’t,” he bites his tongue, closing his eyes for a long second. “I want to tell you, I want to say, don’t ever do something like that again… don’t… don’t put yourself at risk.”
You touch his cheek lightly.
“But it’s not fair is it?” He smiles sadly. “We both do that every day… You know you were gonna be in my squadron at first?”
You shake your head in surprise and he nods.
“You were, but… well,” he blushes ever so slightly. “I was so embarrassingly head over heels in love with you,” he laughs lightly. “For months I could hardly talk to you, you know I had to down five Polanis Red’s in a row after Hurthwen just so I could ask you out? I knew I wouldn’t be able to function right if you were in my squad. I knew that I’d put everyone else at risk because if it came down to it… if there was a choice between everyone in the squad dying, everyone on the base, or you… I’d let the resistance burn instead of lose you. Every single time.”
You close your eyes, fighting the emotion that needs to break through and squeeze his hand like a lifeline. “I love you.” You whisper.
Your fingertips brush against the necklace, the ring hooking around the first knuckle of your index finger by chance.
Poe slowly moves his hand from yours and unwinds the necklace from his palm before carefully placing it over your head, giving you plenty of time to move away if you wanted.
“I love you Moonbeam,” he mutters, his voice low, reverent. Then leans in to kiss you. You kiss him back with all your heart.

You didn’t think anything bothered Poe Dameron…until he found out about your ex.
Warnings: Like one mention of sex. Mentions of drinking alcohol and being drunk. Was meant to be comedic but took a bit of an angsty turn, so warning for insecure!Poe. No proofread (surprise, surprise) so there are probably mistakes. Word count: 1,056 GN!Reader, no use of Y/N.

“How big was he?”
“Poe, please – “
“No, seriously, how big was he?”
You sigh, giving him an almost exasperated look. You’re not sure how you got here. No, actually, that’s a lie. You do. You and your friends had been drinking the night before in celebration after a successful mission, with no casualties, and the more you all drank, the more the conversation…turned.
Listen, you’d played Never Have I Ever before, and even Strip Poker. You were no prude; in fact, you were open about your sexuality, you enjoyed sex and you weren’t ashamed of it. So when someone (you couldn’t fully remember who it was, you think it might have been Rose) asked what your biggest ‘non-sexual' turn on was, and you mentioned your ex was a big guy and that was what had drawn you to him in the first place.
Now, obviously, it’s the next day and word got back to Poe. He’s not happy about it, and he’s cornered you by your quarters. Normally you’d take advantage of the fact that you’d found yourself alone with him, but he doesn’t look to be in the mood. You’d been steadily seeing Poe for over a year, and you felt like you were secure in your relationship; he was a great guy, with a heart of gold, and a nice smile. You still flounder around him, because kriff, he was so good looking. He had a line of people falling at his feet any chance they get.
You never expected him to be self-conscious about his height.
“Tell me,” he said, looking at you with that frown on his face, his arms crossing over his chest.
He’d been working out a little more lately, and it was paying off. He looked delectable.
“There is nothing to tell!”
“Other than you get turned on by guys who are ‘big’,” Poe mutters, and you ignore the pang of guilt that settles heavily in your chest.
“Poe - “ you stop yourself, giving a frustrated huff through your nose. You closed your eyes and pinch the bridge of your nose as you gather your thoughts. “Does it really matter? I’m not with him, I’m with you.”
“But it turns you on.”
“Oh, Maker,” you say, exasperated, opening your eyes and rolling them up to the ceiling.
“Just tell me how big he was,” Poe said, almost nonchalant. You knew it was a trap.
“Look, it was just an offhand comment after a night of drinking, it didn’t mean anything,” you say, almost desperate now.
“Well if it didn’t mean anything, then you should have no problem telling me.”
You sigh, giving him a pointed look. “He was 6’5.”
“6’5!?” he asks, eyes widening as he looks at you.
Your shoulders sag, and you shake your head. “I told you it wasn’t important to know – “
“Not important to know? He’s a kriffing giant, how do I compete with that?” Poe asked, and you swear he looked like he was on the verge of a breakdown.
The guy can look a First Order officer in the face and shoot down a bunch of TIE fighters, but worries about the height of your ex.
“You don’t need to compete with anyone,” you said. “It’s been well and truly over with him for years, and I’m with you.”
“But you’d prefer me to be taller though, right?”
“I prefer you as you are,” you say, cupping his cheeks and making him look at you. “You are amazing. You are exactly who I want you to be. You’re brave and good looking, and you’re kind, and you make me happy, Poe. Please, for Maker’s sake, I love you.”
Poe looks at you with a sad look on his face. “I sometimes…” He goes quiet, averting his gaze from you, before lifting his hands, his fingers wrapping around your wrists. “I sometimes feel like I’m not good enough for you. That you might want something…more.”
Your heart breaks at his words. Poe was always so confident, and he treated you like royalty, and practically wanted for nothing when it came to him. You hated the thought of him feeling inadequate, or ‘not enough’ for you. He was everything you ever wanted.
“You are enough,” you say sincerely. “You’re more than enough. I wake up every day wondering how I got so lucky to have even met you, never mind being in a relationship with you. You treat me well and respect me, and you…you make me feel all fluttery inside.”
Your cheeks warm at the admission, and Poe gives you a shaky grin.
“All fluttery, huh?” he asks.
“Yes,” you answer after a few moments, dropping your hands from his cheeks.
“Your, uh…your ex not make you feel like that?”
You roll your eyes. “If you must know, he was a nice guy but not right for me. A bit of a trainwreck, but…yeah…” you sigh at him. “Please don’t…don’t compare yourself to him, or anyone else. You are kriffing Poe Dameron, everyone would give an arm and a leg to just be in your presence. And I fell in love with Poe Dameron.”
Poe studies you for a moment before his grin widens. “I am pretty great.”
You laugh, shaking your head. “Don’t let your ego get too big, you wouldn’t be able to walk through doors with your big head.”
“Even though I’m shorter, I am the better man.”
“Okay,” you say laughing, stepping away from him.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” he says, pulling you back towards him and he wraps his arms around your waist, keeping you to him. “I just worry sometimes. I’m not around much, and I don’t want you to have…wandering eyes.”
“Wandering eyes?”
“I love you too.”
Your irritation from his quip softens into a look of warmth and understanding. You adore this man.
“Let’s go and get some dinner, okay?” you say, pulling away from him and holding your hand out for him to take. “Bet all that worrying all day made you hungry.”
“Funny,” said Poe, heavy on the sarcasm as she takes your hand and you both stroll through the base, in a comfortable silence.
After a while, Poe pipes up with, “Our sex is better though, right?”
You smirk, not bothering to look at him. “Oh yeah, much better.”
“Sweet.”

You couldn't stand his voice. You wanted him to shut up, your only thought in your head was "Please shut up. I can't stand how appealing your voice is.”  You couldn’t stand the way he looked at everyone, so full of hope. You couldn’t stand the way his curls bounced when he turned his head or the way his eyes sparkled when they came in contact with yours.
It was all too much.
You raised your hand the second he asked whether there were other questions. He narrowed his eyes but like the good receptive leader he was, he nodded at you.
“This is less of a question and more of a request. I’d just like to say that I need people to start keeping the hangar clean and stop parking x-wings wherever you please, only for me to wake up in the morning and dock the ships for you. What are y’all? A bunch of five year olds?” you huffed, your hands on your hips.
You were addressing everyone in the room, but your eyes were steadily trained on the Black Leader, who had a small smirk on his face. He walked around the table and your eyes followed him while you spoke, holding your head high as he approached you.
“You heard your commander, folks!” he addressed the room with one of his charming smiles.
Leaning in, he whispers. “Although, I can’t say I’ll be the one keeping the promise, darling.”
You stiffened at the sound of his voice. He was too close and you wanted to body slam him onto the floor so that you would not have to hear him for a while.You flinched slightly as he brought his hands together for a clap.
“All right, everyones dismissed.”
You stood rooted to your spot, glaring at the General as he went to pick up his data pad.
“Oh fuck you, Dameron.” you mumbled to his back.
“Say it with a little more chest and I’ll be down, Commander.”  he turned his head to you and smirked.
Those lips.
Those fucking lips.
The one time you caved into them made you regret every possible living day you’ve had since. The way those lips had carved out the secret between you two made it seem unbreakable. You craved the taste, but you were too stubborn to satisfy the craving and you had a feeling he knew you were holding back, the passing glances and glares holding something a little more than just resentment.
“You, Dameron, are, without a doubt, the most annoying person I've ever crossed paths with. and don't even get me started on the sound of your voice." you snap.
“Hmm, would you like my voice to say something only for your ears, sweet angel?” He replied so smoothly that you almost let yourself smile, but you resisted, clenching your jaw hard.
You scowled through your heating cheeks and you let out a sharp breath as the door closed behind him. Over the past few years, that voice has been the bane of your existence. Always saying something cocky, vain or insulting. That didn’t help to cure your insatiable need for him though.
You’d spend your nights dreaming away about the way he would sound, if you ever got the chance to get under him. How would his lips feel against the shell of your ear if he were to keep his promise and whisper all the beautiful things you'd want him to do to you? Would he whimper if you tug those curls just right or would he grunt and growl if you scratched that glorious back of his? These questions kept you awake and ebbed away at your sanity for years. You glanced at the clock and rubbed your cheek, groaning slightly at the way you had let this ordinary man completely ruin your relatively stable mind.

You stared with sleep laden eyes at the x-wing that was parked smack in the middle of the hangar. You scowled again at Poe’s mischief and mumbled curses under your breath as you climbed the ladder up into the cockpit. You slid into his seat and took a deep breath as Poe’s scent filled your nostrils. You smile to yourself, tracing the joystick before you with your fingers.
You don't actually hate him, every single good memory you’ve had has him in it. You do however, enjoy the back and forth the both of you had going on for the past few months due to your sudden promotions. Secretly, you were in love with Poe, his stupid boyish swagger made your heart ache, especially when he used that god awful smile on you.
Slowly, everything was becoming more and more overwhelming, lulling you into sleep. You turned and pressed your nose into the seat, breathing in the soothing scent as your eyes fluttered close.
“Just for a few minutes…” you mumbled, and soon the cockpit of the x-wing was filled with the sounds of your snores.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
Poe was waiting for you at the hanger, watching for any movement from his x-wing. He loved teasing you like this, smiling to himself when he sees you unhappily wadling in your sleep shirt towards his ship. He waited for you to come down, so that he could scare you. He frowned when you took too long, silences ringing in his ear when his ship didn’t start moving. Alarm bells started going off in his head and he rushed to the x-wing and quickly climbed up, only to see you sleeping there.
He stared at you for a while, leaning against his x-wing as you snored softly in his seat, nuzzing your nose into his chair. He didn’t make a mistake, kissing you that one fateful day, pretending to be drunk to maybe earn your favour for the night. He knew he couldn’t have you the second your lips pressed harder against his, igniting something that he could not explain, alongside with the urge to keep you safe. He pushed you away that night, vowing to never turn back to you until he could keep you and his people safe.
The general sighed and flipped open a dummy switch by the control, a switch that you had never touched before, to reveal your face. He pressed his two fingers to his lips and to the picture of your smiling face, just like he always did before he took flight, followed by the softest kiss on your forehead, something totally unorthodox to him, something that he would talk himself out of if he ever gave his heart a chance to listen to his brain. Poe waited for a while for you to stir but breathed out a sigh of relief when you didn’t.
He wanted to keep his distance, he really did. But you kept him up all night, the way you gasped into his mouth when the kiss got a little more hungry never really left his mind, rolling over and over like a broken tape recorder. He wanted to hold you in his arms and keep his promise, to keep you alive and beautiful as always. To never see you cower away in pain or suffering ever again. How could he do that when everything went radioactive around him?
He wanted you so bad, and he was running out of ideas and ways to stay out of your lane. Poe sighed again, reaching out to move away a strand of hair that fell out of place.He leaned back and watched you a little longer until his eyes grew heavy with sleep too.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You woke up in your bed, completely confused with your bearings. You had a weird dream, being in Poe’s x-wing, being carried out by him. You tried to go through the dream in order, piecing together whether it was real or not. You finally shook your head, figuring that you probably dreamt it up in your sleep-addled brain.
You sigh and decide to get up and start your day, pulling your datapad to check your schedule. There were going to be new recruits today and you had to greet them and assign them to their positions. It was the easiest of your jobs, your smile genuine as your heart gets lighter now that the galaxy was healing. You quickly got up and got ready, to show your best to the new recruits.
You stood poised in your uniform waiting for the transport to touch down at the hangar when suddenly you felt a strong presence behind you. You didn’t need to be a master of the force to know that Poe Dameron was standing behind you, his gaze piercing the back of your head making your smile slightly. You raise your chin slightly as the door to the transport drops and a few individuals walk out. One of them leads the bunch, walking slightly faster and taller towards you. A beautiful woman, her hair cropped short and her sleeves torn up, revealing intricate tattoos. You shoot the woman with your best smile and she grins back.
“Ah, you must be the General, people talk about your greatness but never your beauty. I am Keana and this is my team.” the woman kneels in front of you and takes your hand, planting a soft kiss onto the back of it, making your face heat up at the gesture.
You were quite literally lost for words until you felt someone’s body press against your shoulder.
“That’s because I am the general.” Poe’s voice rang clear and authoritative, and the woman before you quickly stands up and throws Poe a sheepish smile.
“Terribly sorry for the mistake, I assumed that this fine lady here is the general due to her uniform.” Her words made you spin around to see Poe in his flight suit, helmet tucked under his arm and you try hard not to laugh.
While Keana rounded her group, you tip your head towards Poe with a small smile on your face.
“I think she called you ugly, baby.” you whisper and his head turns almost too sharply at your utterance of the nickname.
Poe Dameron was far from ugly. He was indeed one of the most beautiful men you’ve ever laid your eyes on. His scruffy stubble and flawless boyish curls made him look like an effortless prince. His character and charisma only heightened his attractiveness and he had a smile and glint in his eyes that made him irresistible. Poe rolled his eyes at your statement, a smirk evidently trying not to show on his lips as he tried to hold back his next statement.
“Come on, no snarky remark?” you say, utterly impressed by his control.
Poe gave you a pointed look and sauntered off to his x-wing, which was suspiciously parked in the right spot. You stared a little longer at the pilot, your eyes trailing a little lower than your liking and you pout and turn on your heel to join Keana and her little group for their tour.
You knew the man was up to something but you just could not prove what he was doing, or not doing.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
By the time the sun had begun to set, you were completely bugged out. Poe teasing you at any point of day had been a daily occurrence since the both of you touched down onto the base. But today he hadn’t said a word directly to you and you were lying if you weren’t slightly worried about it. He also had been tactfully avoiding you all day and you were positive he was when you swear you saw a rush of orange in your peripheral when you finished your tour.
Fortunately for you, you ran into the best two people that would know where Poe was.
“Finn! Rey! Where’s Dameron?” you panted, running to catch up with them.
“His room, I think. He was weirdly quiet and working on something the last time I saw him.” Finn said and Rey nodded along.
“Room. Got it. Thanks.” you punctuated before running off to Poe’s room.
You gathered yourself when you found Poe’s door, combing your fingers through your hair and then straightening out your blouse before keying in the passcode. You walked through the doorway as soon as the door whoshed open, only to find Poe staring blankly at his datapad on his bed. He didn’t even turn to look at you, his eyes carefully trained onto what he was reading.
“Dameron! Everything okay?” You chirpily asked as you invited yourself to sit at his desk, turning the chair to face him.
The silence that rang after your question was deafening. You narrowed your eyes at the man before you, trying to figure out why he was giving you the silent treatment. You pursed your lips and clicked your tongue as Poe subtly shifted, still paying you no attention at all.
Poe hated the way you called him by his last name. He sure as hell didn’t care if he was addressed with it by any other person, but by you? A fiery rage burned in him, fuelled by the way the new recruit flirted with you and the way you had blushed and flushed even with him standing right behind you. He shouldn’t be this angry, not with you, never with you.
“So the tour went great as usual, Keana is really nice and her team is great, I think that they would do just fine with our people.” You went on, breaking through the silence again as Poe types something into the data pad.
Poe’s anger was slowly growing and he focused all his might into not losing his temper and doing something that he might regret. He continued to ignore you as if you weren’t sitting there with a beautiful smile on your face that was slowly melting into a frown that he equally enjoyed. He saw your hand move and realised that you were waving at him, trying to force his attention to you.
You sighed, still not willing to admit defeat. Your brain races through the scenarios in which you could get the General’s attention when suddenly, all the lights go off, making you gasp. You scrambled off the chair and ran to the door, trying to open it but it wouldn’t budge.
“What, never had a power cut in your life, darling?” Poe’s voice dripped like venom over you from the bed, making you slowly turn around to face him.
He was finally looking at you, a glare of pure disdain etched upon his handsome face that was illuminated by the screen of his data pad, flipped your stomach at its intensity.
Why was he so angry?
His face turns back to the data pad, resuming its previous deadpan expression. You walk over to his bed and sit at the edge, watching quietly as he works, the anger seemingly radiating out of his body and making you feel small.
You blinked after a while, realising that this man actually had no right to be mad at you. All this time, it had been him annoying the hell out of you. Why should you feel small? You straighten your back and scooched closer, your hand near his.
You poked him, digging your finger into his side, only for no response. Whatever he was mad about must be making him really angry, because on a normal day, Poe Dameron would be the most sensitive person on base.
“Daaameron. Dameron, Dameron, Dameron, Dameron.” You jabbed away, but to no avail.
Inside, Poe was enjoying this. He wanted to see how far you would go to gain his attention. Somehow he knew that you were aware of what he was doing because you suddenly stopped your jabbing, your hand dropping back to your side once again.
You took a good look at him, wondering if he was worth the risk of losing everything. Your mind was probably leaning towards your riskier side as you eyed the way he sat, his legs and torso forming a seat that you couldn’t resist wanting to sit on. Your intrusive thoughts got the best of you as you quickly climbed into the bed and slid onto his lap. Poe’s eyes widen for a split second and his free hand grasps at your hips as he makes eye contact as he huffs out a breath. Then suddenly, his face goes stoic again.
He turns to his data pad that was still clutched in his other hand and continues to read, as if unbothered by your presence. Your hands bunch up his shirt and you hold onto him as you grimace. You shifted a little in his lap and felt his grip on your hip tighten slightly, making you smirk. A part of you was nervous, being in such a compromising position with your general, but Poe could have thrown you off his body eons ago if he wanted to.
Instead he sat as still as possible, only his eyes and chest slightly moving. If Poe was the one who was nervous, he clearly wasn’t showing it. You blatantly checked him out, his pretty boy curls flopping here and there, the curve of his necklace as it rested against his glorious neck, the bobbing of his Adam’s apple as he swallowed, the slight part of his plump lips that you oh so craved for, all zeroing you to the point of why you were there in the first place.
You steadied yourself, sliding your hands to either side of his shoulder, feeling the muscles underneath his jacket. Even with you feeling him up, Poe didn’t budge a single inch, his hand now gently resting on the curve of your hip. You eyed Poe’s stubble longingly, your heart thudding inside your chest as you gazed at how perfect the curve of his jaw was. A few of Poe’s fingers lightly squeezed at your hip as if he were daring you to make your next move too.
You figured “Why not.”
What could you possibly lose now, you were already straddling him.
You grabbed at his jacket and leaned in, pressing a feathery kiss to a spot between his neck and where his jaw started, and to your absolute joy, another soft gasp emitting from his lips. You let go of his jacket and let your chest lay flat against his, sliding your hands around his neck and smiling against his neck before pressing another kiss and feeling a light shudder.
“Give up Dameron.” you murmured.
Poe’s eyes remained glued to the datapad but you knew he wasn't concentrating anymore with the way he started to breathe, slow and shallow, as if he were focusing on composing himself. You slowly run your fingers through his locks, your nails grazing the nape of his neck, gently coaxing him to relax when suddenly you feel his breath jump.
“Where’s that aggravating voice of yours now, General?” You purred into his ear and felt a growing hardness beneath you, along with your own swirling heat at the pit of your abdomen.
One of your hands make their way back to his face, gently grabbing at his jaw as you push yourself off him again, effectively grinding your hot core into his just to rile the pilot up. Poe’s eyes were half lidded now and his data pad hung loosely in his grip as his hand had drifted down onto his bed, laying limp. You pushed his chin up, forcing him to make eye contact with you.
When those swirling dark brown eyes snapped to yours, you realised how much trouble you were in, just from a single glance.
“Poe…” you whispered, so softly that you doubted he heard you despite the lack of space between the two of you.
Poe’s free hand snaked up your back and held onto the back of your neck in an instant, pulling you towards him as your lips finally crashed together. The kiss was urgent and Poe wasted no time snaking the hand at your waist around your body to keep you pinned against him, making your mouth drop open, welcoming Poe’s tongue as he pushed himself up to kiss you harder.
You’ve been wanting this for months and the satisfaction that rushed over you was like no other. You didn’t care about the fact that you couldn’t breathe, you just needed to feel him against you. Poe pulls away with a sharp intake of breath as you grind down hard on his growing erection. His eyes were still on yours, piercing right through your soul.
“You’re starting something that you’re gonna regret, sweetheart.” He whispered as he readjusted the way you were straddling him.
“What are you gonna do? Throw me out of the resistance?” You laughed but it died down instantly when a smirk curled itself onto his kiss-addled lips.
Poe had kept everything he felt about you pented up for months and now he was fuelled with a passion like no other. He flipped you over and towered over you, watching as your face went flush and your eyes grew wide.
“Oh you’ll see.” He simply said before leaning down to kiss you again, pressing his entire body against your frame as your hands flew to his hair.
He knew you having your hands in his hair turns you on as much as it does him, but he tutted against your lips and pulled your hands down from his head anyway.
“You're really a brat.” he says lowly.
“Poe please…” you begged him with your eyes, not wanting him to stop.
“Brats don't get to touch me.” He gets on his knees and towered over you, unbuckling his belt as you watched on, completely aroused by the way he tugs it.
He twisted his belt and looped it around the buckle a few times before you knew what he was doing. He slipped the makeshift cuff onto your wrists and secured you to the bed, making you giggle nervously, tugging your wrists and showing you that you were going nowhere.
“There you go, pretty girl.” he smiled cruelly, tapping your cheek with his fingers and you gasped slightly at his demeanour.
“What should I do with you?” he asked mockingly as his hands trailed to your shirt, undoing the first few buttons.
“I’d save the best for last,” he smiled to himself before raising his eyebrows at you and ripping the rest of your shirt. “and I’ll start with my appetiser.”
Your breathing had quickened and you were following Poe’s every move. His fingers had moved to the waistband of your pants and he watched your eyes widen as he hooked his fingers.
“Want me to stop?” Poe questioned, slightly amused by your silence.
“No, no, please don’t!” You whine, your hands tugging uselessly at their bonds.
“As you wish, baby.” he gives you another cheeky smirk before pulling your pants down, along with your underwear, exposing you to the cold air of his room. He was a little further away now and you tried to make your eyes adjust to the dark so that you could see him.
That's when you felt a warm breath against your cunt. You wanted to snap your legs close but strong hands clamped you down and a casual chuckle emitted from your core. A soft kiss in your inner thigh rubbed all the feelings of anxiety away and Poe’s hand began to rub soft circles in the plush of your thigh that made you sink further into his bed.
“Oh, Poe…” was all you could say as his breath fanned your exposed core again.
“That’s right, angel, love hearing you beg for me.” Poe said sultry, almost to your cunt rather than to you.
He pressed a feather light kiss onto your clit and you keened, a soft airy moan filling the room.
“These moans are mine.” Poe said softly from between your legs.
His hands travelled slightly higher, his big palms and fingers feeling the planes of your skin.
“This body is mine.” He said again, almost to himself.
Something clicked inside you and you finally figured out what got you here in the first place.
“You’re mine.” This time, the words were uttered so softly that you were pretty sure you had lost Poe to his own thoughts.
Suddenly with your last act of defiance, you found yourself saying:
“You jealous, pretty boy?”
That's when all hell broke loose and you knew your next few thoughts were going to be incoherent.
Poe’s tongue lapped up your arousal that had been pooling from grinding on him and his words, making you arch your back and push your pussy into his face. His hands travelled back to your core and held you open, as he started to devour you like a man starved.
Nothing in the galaxy could have prepared you for the way your general started eating you out. He ate your spend like he earned it, licking and slurping and moaning into your pussy as if it gave him life to so what he was doing. His beautiful nose rubbed into your clit just right and your whimpering only fuelled his fire because he latched his mouth onto your clit and pushed two fingers into you without a question.
You sweared, through your haze ridden mind, that he smirked against you as you started to writhe and gasp for air as his fingers reached the delicious spot that you yearned for. You were shaking for him within a few minutes, hands desperately trying to grab onto something but failing as your orgasm ripped through you like a hailstorm.
Poe knew you were being too loud but didn’t have the heart or the coherent thought to stop you from screaming his name at the top of your lungs as your clit throbbed between his lips and your cunt clenched tightly around his fingers that were still trying their best to piston in and out of you.
Poe brought you down with several gentle kitten licks and soft kisses onto your skin as his hand began to knead gently at your flesh. He heard his belt rattling again, followed by a soft whimper that tore at his heart strings, causing him to crawl up your body with soft words leaving his lips.
“Okay, baby, you’re okay. You did so well.” he said through your gasps and gently untied you from his bed frame.
He brought your wrist to his lips and kissed them gently before rubbing them comfortingly. Your whimpers quietened down and your soft breathes made Poe smile as he brought his face close to yours.
“Hello.” He says as you pry your eyes open.
“Hey.” You breathe, taking in his pretty face before leaning up for a kiss.
Poe caught your lips gracefully, his kisses softer and more calculated. You tasted yourself on him and you realised what you had just done with your general. Poe could probably sense your hesitation when your side of the kiss had a sense of unsurity.
“Baby?” he asked as he pulled away.
“Is this right?” You asked, searching his eyes.
“Yes, baby, yes. I want this and it feels right to me. Does it feel right to you?” He says, reassuringly rubbing at your cheek with his thumb.
You smiled. This was your Poe.
“Yes, Poe. It feels right.” you giggled slightly as Poe sighed in relief.
“So you gonna fuck me now?” you raised your eyebrow and let your eyes droop, causing the now accustomed smirk to form on Poe’s face with your words.
“Didn’t think you’d ask.” Poe answered in his usual confident tone.
Poe got rid of his pants faster than you could ever imagine. To say that you were slightly intimidated by his size was definitely an understatement. He reached over you to his bedside drawer and pulled out a condom, slipping it on and letting his length drop between the both of you.
You stared incredulously at his cock that was laid out on your stomach. You’d definitely feel him in your guts for days after this. You found yourself trailing a hand down to his cock, wrapping your fingers around him to test his weight.
Poe moaned dangerously low as you started to stroke his cock, his head thrown back almost immediately. You stroked him a few more times before lining up his tip at your entrance, taking your time as you slowly let him push himself in.
“Maker, Poe.” You cried as he slowly bottomed out, never feeling this full in your entire life.
“It's okay, baby, I’m here.” Poe’s voice was strained from the way your pussy gripped around him and the both of you knew it was only a matter of a few minutes before you both were pushed past breaking point.
You nodded and Poe started to move slowly, your synchronised moans and groans echoing around the dark room once again. Poe leaned down and began to slowly suck at your exposed breast that had popped out of their bra in your previous tousle. You arched your back and threaded a hand up his locks, pulling him tightly against you as your other hand generously scratched up his back, making him moan hungrily against your tit.
“Fuck baby, you feel so fucking good.” he groaned.
His movements increased with sudden vigour, picking up the pace to match your beautiful moans. The amazing drag of his cock in your wet channel made you want to float and you feel yourself losing yourself to him. Poe’s hand ended up between the two of you and you knew he was close as his fingers started to rub gently at your already abused clit.
“Come with me Poe, please.” You whispered and he nodded immediately.
“Now.” he breathed and you came with a choked groan as you milked him, pushing him and prolonging his release with each clench of your cunt.
He pumped himself inside you a few more times before letting his legs give way, collapsing ungracefully on top of you. The both of you spent the next few minutes catching your breath, completely spent from your irresponsible activities.
Poe gets up first, pressing a gentle kiss onto your shoulder before pulling himself out of you with a groan. He pulls off the condom and you hear him tossing it aside and gently lowering himself next to you as you admire the mess you made of him.
You gently run your knuckle against his cheekbone and watch his eyes flutter close. You shuffle closer and turn around, tucking yourself into his chest and pulling his arms around you, feeling incredibly clingy after that vigorous session.
“Who knew you had an off button inside you.” Poe spoke up after a while and you swatted at his bicep, causing him to chuckle and cuddle you closer.
You suddenly felt vulnerable in his arms, turning to face him once more.
“Poe?” you whisper.
“Hmm?”
“D-do you like me?” you ask, hugging your arms around your own naked body.
Silence filled the room and you thought you were done for, that this was all for nothing when suddenly, a loud laugh emitted from Poe, causing you to jump slightly.
“You’re telling me, you slid into my lap and let me fuck you how I wanted to fuck you and you’re now asking if I like you?! Are you dumb?” he cackled through his words and you pouted.
“I don’t like you, stupid. I love you.” Poe said in one final sentence that made you almost stop functioning.
“You- I…” you tried to say but Poe cut you off with a kiss, a kiss so gentle almost like he was afraid to break you.
“I love you too Poe.” You breathed the second his lips gave you the tiniest bit of space.
“I know.” He smiled at you before giving you one last peck. “Can we go back to cuddling now and talk about everything when the power comes back?”
“By talk you mean-”
“Do I need to spell it out, commander? Now hush.” he slyly cuts you off and you smile as his arms wrap around you once again, your heart and mind finally settling in the same place.

“permission to lean in?” “permission granted”, “with your lips on mine…”, and “you kissed me last night.” “and you didn’t stop me.” with Poe?
Unremarkable
Poe Dameron x G!N reader
Rating : M
Wordcount : 1400
Warnings : Non descriptive sexual contact mentions, sort of enemies to lovers (but also sort of not?), mentions of marriage, a bunch of teasing and banter.
Summary : The morning after the night before has you giving Poe some choice feedback.
A/N : Sorry I kept this kinda short and sweet and I didn't include one of the prompts. It was difficult to fit in. And sorry it's taken me so long to finish it!
Un-beta'd. Sorry for any mistakes!!

"You kissed me last night," Poe comments the moment he walks into the empty meeting room, unceremoniously throwing himself down in the chair beside you, scrambling to catch the cup of caf he upsets on the table in the process.
"And you didn't stop me," you reply with a sigh at his actions, mopping up the spillage as he gives you an apologetic look. Even as a General, Poe was still a disaster flyboy, though you don't know why you thought that would ever change.
"Oh I know. I just wanted to remind you about it so it was at the forefront of your mind," he grins, not missing a beat in the conversation despite the mess he's made. You roll your eyes, trying to ignore the heat that prickles the back of your neck at the memory of what followed that kiss, the one that had you both stumbling into a supply cupboard of all places. Yes you might have instigated the kiss, but Poe had taken it much further than you had intended at that moment.
"You're right, I did need a reminder because it was pretty forgettable," you shrug, as though there isn't molten lava flowing through your veins at the memory of his tongue between your teeth, his body pressed against yours, the sound of supplies clattering to the ground from the shelves with the force of his thrusts.
You don't look at him, but out of the corner of your eye you see Poe's eyebrows shoot up somewhere into his hairline, and you have to bite your tongue to stop your laughter. He recovers quickly, leaning back in his chair and attempting to look as nonchalant as possible.
"So you won't be wanting a repeat tonight then?" He asks casually, picking up his datapad and flicking through it as though he isn't subtly watching your reaction.
You shrug noncommittally, dragging out your consideration as you sip what's left of your caf.
"Hmm, I don't think I had plans tonight, but that said I'm sure I can find something better to do."
"Than me?" Poe scoffs, as though he can't possibly imagine you would want to spend a night anywhere else. He gives up the show of looking at his work, throwing the data pad back on the table and folding his arms. "Well I heard Retha is hosting a film night in the mess. I'd probably have more fun at that than with you anyway."
"Probably,” you shrug, “but you know you can't concentrate through an entire film.” You glance over at him, watching his eyebrows pull together in a frown. He knows you're telling the truth but he's spoiling to argue about it.
"How would you know? You fall asleep ten minutes in and then wake up for the end asking twenty questions about who people are,” he accuses in retaliation, meeting your gaze with a glare of his own.
You jump back in, ready to defend yourself because he knows the problem is him. How many times have you settled down in his bunk to watch something and ended up under him, above him, and well, a whole lot of other positions that did not in any way involve watching the film.
"That's a lie. You've hardly ever let me watch properly to know what's going on anyway!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" He asks. You give him a pointed look of warning, wondering if he really wants you to bring up his handsy antics in front of the other resistance members who have started to file into the room. When he continues to glare at you you decide he clearly needs it spelling out.
“It means maybe I don't know what's going on because someone can't keep their di-” you cut off your hissed reply, temporarily putting your argument on hold as Poe is interrupted by one of his commanders. You offer up a small smile at the others who begin taking their places around the table, chattering softly between themselves.
When everyone seems otherwise distracted Poe rounds back on you, unable just to simply drop the topic.
"Okay, point taken, but I only interrupt the boring films," he concedes, folding his arms stubbornly. "And let's be fair you've never complained."
"Well there's never really anything to comment on, complaints or otherwise" you shrug, watching his mouth fall open that for a second time you've insulted what he considered his second best talent to flying. His eyes flash dangerously and you can't help squirming in your seat, a delicious tingling licking across your skin at the thought he may make you pay for that, one way or another.
Poe’s eyes narrow and he leans in close to you.
“Oh really? Not even that one time we-”
"Are you two done?" Finn interrupts, making both of you startle. You feel your cheeks heat with embarrassment, realising everyone at the table is now staring at the two of you. Sitting back you fold your arms, it's Poe’s fault. He started it.
You catch the tail end of Poe's grumbled comments to himself as he gets up to host the meeting, turning on the screens with a "forgettable…show you nothing to comment on."
~~~~
You stay behind as everyone filters out, leaning against the edge of the table waiting for him.
"So," Poe asks coming to stand in front of you, placing his arms either side of you, caging you in place. "Forgettable? I doubt you would have married someone who left you with forgettable hmm… moments." He settles on with a grin.
You laugh, amused that he's still not over the fact you said that, even almost two hours later.
"I was caught up in the momentum of victory," you tease, enjoying the butterflies his closeness gives you, still basking in the joy of being newlyweds after the end of the war. "I was excited to marry the resistance poster boy. Who knew he'd become so predictably boring? I mean really Poe? A supply closet? You can do better than that."
He huffs in response, acting offended all over again.
"Oh so now I'm forgettable and boring? I really thought you were still hopelessly in love with me and enjoying every moment of christening our new base. I mean, you certainly seemed to be enjoying it, rather loudly if I remember correctly," he gives you a smug grin and a raise of his eyebrow. He knows full well how much you enjoyed it and yes, perhaps you had been just a little bit loud about it.
You shrug, still playing along.
“Oh baby, that was all show. I couldn't let you think you were disappointing. You are the big scary General after all,” you tease in a babyish tone.
Poe glares at you, stepping back and clasping his hands behind his back, looking every inch the leader he is. The look he gives you sends heat rushing through your veins. The game is wearing thin, his jaw is tense and his eyes are narrowed, waiting for your move. He wants to prove your comments are wrong, even though he already knows you are only teasing.
"I guess I've interpreted this situation completely incorrectly and you don't want to help your General check out all the rooms, including the supply closets?” He asks, unmoving.
You lick your lips, fixing him with a sultry gaze.
“Well, I might be convinced, if only so I can help improve your performance.”
"Well aren't you just so selfless?" He rolls his eyes but steps towards you anyway. "You know I was thinking we could see how this room fairs but I assume that's too predictably boring for you?"
"Well," you grin, "we don't have that much time and this room is conveniently empty."
Another step towards you, "You're sure you have nothing better to do?"
“I have a free five minutes. That's all you need right?” you shrug, making the pilot break all pretence and start laughing.
He grumbles something about cheek and insubordination but you’re too distracted with the way he lights up when he laughs to care about his insults. You’re struck once more with a wave of love, the same one that made you fall for him all that time ago. Stars you adore him, you want him, you need him.
"Permission to lean in?" You ask, curling your fingers into the collar of his shirt, pulling him against you as Poe takes your waist.
He pauses for a moment, making a show of considering your request before his expression finally softens. He leans in to whisper against your lips.
"Permission granted."
He makes sure what happens next is anything but forgettable.
Because You Left
Tumblr media
Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader
Word Count: 1.7k
Rating: This one's for anybody, but the whole blog is 18+ for sure.
Warnings: Lovers to strangers, fighting, angst, swearing, both of them are probably idiots but *shrug*
A/N: Holy wow it's been a minute! I've had this one in the vault for a while but just never did anything with it. There's a happy ending as well, so I can post that if there's interest, but I'm pushing myself to not tie everything up so nicely and let the tough emotions sit so you get ✨angst✨. We also don't need to talk about how I'm working through some things about an old flame with this one soooo hush. Unbeta'd, no use of y/n.
Tumblr media
It’s an unusually quiet night on base, lamplight flickering through the hallways and muffled laughter sneaking under doors as people take advantage of the stillness. Your footsteps echo loudly, an intrusion in the calm as you hurry to your post, breathless by the time you arrive.
“Sorry I’m late,” you begin, not looking at your watch partner, “I couldn’t find-”
“Not like you to be late, Captain,” a familiar voice interrupts.
Your stomach flops as you meet Poe’s gaze. “I… I’m sorry, Commander.” Your words falter, the memory of your last encounter momentarily clouding your mind…
“Find somewhere else to sleep tonight,” Poe says quietly at the door, not looking at you, “I’m busy.”
“Of course you are. Seems like you’ve been busy a lot these days. Busy with everything but finding time for me.”
Poe doesn’t say anything as he turns his back to you, pressing the button to close the door to his quarters. The click of the door sliding into place echoes deep in your bones as you’re left alone in the hallway…
That was months ago. You’d immediately requested a service change to a new squadron and done everything in your power to avoid seeing him again. Night shifts and dangerous recon runs, anything to make sure your paths never crossed again.
“No need to apologize, I won’t tell anyone.” Poe winks at you with a grin. “So, it’s been a while, how have you been?”
Shaking the memory from your mind, you begin preparing for your watch. “Fine. You?”
“I’ve been okay.” He watches you gather your things, eyes trained on your every move.
“Mmm,” you respond non-committedly, shoving a flashlight and spare battery pack for your blaster into your bag before tugging the straps over your shoulders. “Well, I should be off. Being late and all.”
“Actually, we should be off. Your shift buddy called out so I’m his replacement.”
Fantastic. “Commander Dameron on night patrol?”
“Everyone pitches in where they’re needed,” he responds, hoisting his pack.
Six hours on watch with Poe was the last thing you wanted to do, but he was right. Everyone was expected to, and for the most part did, pitch in where they were needed. If this was how you were expected to help the Resistance then you’d grit your teeth and get through it.
“Let’s get going then.” You’re out the door and making your way to the watchtower before he can reprimand you for speaking to your superior like that.
Luckily, the calm seems to be holding and the watchtower is nearly serene in the clear night. Stars twinkle above you in constellations you were still learning and the breeze was a song you never tired of. Lost in the ebb and flow of nature around you, you don’t notice the time pass.
Poe’s voice breaks the silence for the first time in hours. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” you nod, keeping your eyes on the wilderness beyond the base.
“What happened? With us?”
Heat creeps up the back of your neck and the breeze seems to stop at the question. Like the whole base was waiting on bated breath for your response. “We just… Grew apart. That’s all.”
You hear Poe shift in his seat. “No, I don’t think that’s it. Not entirely.”
“What do you want me to say, Poe?” “I want you to look at me and tell me the truth.”
“I told you the truth.” Your clipped response is bitter on your tongue and you keep your body facing away from him. “We grew apart and the war got in the way of everything else.”
“This isn’t just some distance thing, tell me what happened.”
“I have nothing else to say.”
“You’re still not telling me the truth. I know you, why did you suddenly-”
“Because you left!” The words rip out of you and you finally stand, whirling around to face him. “Because you left me, Poe.”
Indignation blazes across his face. “I never left you, not any longer than a mission required of me!”
“That’s not what I mean!” Both your voices are too loud for the quiet watch, but you don’t care. Emotions flare and dance in your veins, demanding to be released. “You stopped giving a damn and then kicked me out of your room and told me you were busy. You stopped fighting for me. For us. You left one day and never really came back.”
The silence seems to echo as your words fade from the lone tower, open to the night sky. “I’d been trying for weeks at that point, Poe, and you kept pushing me away. So I stopped trying because you obviously didn’t want me around!”
“When have I ever said I don’t want you around?” He’s also standing, stepping into your orbit with his hands extended to his sides.
“You didn’t have to say it.” Stomping away from him to the rail of the tower, you lean against the weathered wood, “It was painfully clear.”
He follows you and grips your shoulders, spinning you to face him. “I’ve been out of my damn mind trying to be a leader in all of this. You know what Leia expects of me, you know what’s at stake-”
“Of course I do!” You shake his hands off you and push him away, “But I thought it would be exactly because of those reasons that you’d give a fuck about me. I thought, for a moment, that I was one of those things you were fighting for.”
“You were! You still are, and you always have been!”
“Just stop.” Your voice is trembling with rage and pain; searing white flames lick through the marrow of your bones. “Whether you meant to or not, you made it very clear where your priorities are and I’ve made my peace with the fact that this,” a sweeping gesture to the sleeping base below, “is your priority. Not me. And I shouldn’t be. I mean, hell, what am I compared to the entire Resistance?”
Needing to put any amount of distance between you, you make your way to the other side of the tower and settle into a chair, facing away from Poe. The noise from the breeze and insects comes back into focus as you curl your legs against your chest.
After a moment, Poe’s voice reaches you from across the tower, “Do you know why I told you I was busy that night? Why I told you to go sleep somewhere else?”
You don’t respond, hugging your legs tighter as the anger starts to fizzle into sadness.
“I told you to leave because Leia had informed me that we had just lost an entire squadron to an ambush in the Mid-Rim. I had gotten some intel that there was going to be an unprotected shipment of weapons in the area and that group was sent out to get them. It was a trap, and my bad information got them all killed.” Poe stayed away from you through his explanation, his voice drifting by more quietly with each word. “None of them made it home. Because of me.”
The urge to go to him, to wrap him in your arms and comfort him, nearly overwhelms you for a moment before he continues. “I told you to leave because I didn’t want you, of all people, to see me break. I shattered that night, and when the sun rose and I realized that I’d made a huge mistake, you had already transferred and I didn’t see you again for weeks.”
Silent tears fall from your eyes at his admissions; the truths he laid in front of you. “So I let you go,” he whispers, “because it felt like some sort of karmic justice to lose you for what happened to those fighters.”
You find your voice again and say, “I’m sorry about the mission, I didn’t know… But that doesn’t make any of this better. It doesn’t excuse the fact that you didn’t even try.”
“You haven’t let me try.” His quiet voice begins to turn to ice.
“How was I supposed to know you even wanted to? You knew where my quarters were, you have access to all my orders; you could’ve come talk to me at any time and yet you didn’t.”
Heavy footsteps move away toward the edge of the tower. Without turning, you can picture his face in the starlight: his eyebrows furrowed, lips pursed, muscles in his jaw and neck jumping as he clenches his teeth. “You said I didn’t try. That I made it obvious I didn’t want you around. Well, Captain,” he spits your rank into the night, “you made it pretty clear as well that you didn’t want to be near me. Switching squads and dodging me at every turn.”
“You have no right-” you begin, but Poe cuts you off.
“I have every right!” His yell echoes off the gently rolling hills surrounding the base. “I have every damn right when you throw accusations in my face like this. You wanna talk about someone leaving or giving up? How about we talk about how all it took was one bad night for me for you to completely push me away?”
Rage begins simmering in your gut again, bringing you to your feet and back across the tower. “You never gave me any indication that you were dealing with more than the normal amount of stress. I tried everything I could to ease that stress for you; bringing you food when you were drowning in paperwork in your room, letting you fuck me every night even when you couldn’t look me in the eye, ignoring every red flag just to try and prove to you that I was there through it all. And it was never enough.”
“Well, I guess that’s our answer, then.” Poe keeps his gaze locked with yours, eyes gleaming with fury and sadness.
Your heart shatters. “I… I guess it is.”
“I’ll send someone else up here.” Poe lingers for a heartbeat, fists clenched at his side, before turning and heading down the stairs, leaving you alone.
You stare out over base, watching Poe’s form disappear from view in the night, each step a death knell in your bones. Any future you daydreamed about fades with each passing breath. By the time Poe’s replacement makes it up the tower, the early morning wind has dried your tears and frozen a thick casing of ice around your heart.
Let me take your hand
Fandom: Star Wars
Character(s): modern!AU Poe, Shara Bey and Kes Dameron
Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader
Summary: Sometimes all you need to make the pain a little more bearable is someone to take your hand, hold you gently, kiss you softly and tell you that they love you.
Words: 6900
Warnings: Hurt/comfort with a lot of hurt (!) in the beginning, aftermath of losing a parent (please please please don’t read if you fear that you might not be able to bear reading this!), reader celebrates Christmas, kind of spoilery if you haven’t read “Free Fall”
A/N: This was supposed to be a cute little spin-off of another Christmas story that spiralled completely out of control. 2023 was the third Christmas with this story living rent free in my mind and I was really determined to finally write and finish it this time before becoming really sick for two months. Even though it’s nearly Easter I hope that maybe one or two of you might still like it <3
As always, I apologize for not being a native speaker.
Tumblr media
Christmas used to be Poe’s favourite time of the year.
There were presents, bright sparkling lights all over the city, the smell of freshly baked cookies, joyful songs on the radio, people being so much kinder than usual, chocolate glazed koyo berries and most importantly: both of his parents would be at home. Because Christmas was sacred.
Sure, presents were nice and everything, but sneaking into his parents’ bedroom before dawn on Christmas Morning, cuddling up to them under their warm blankets, lying safe and snug between them in a huge loving hug sandwich, knowing that for once there was no rush to get up and nothing to worry about because the day belonged to no one but their family?
There was nothing in Poe’s whole world that would ever be able to beat that.
Christmas was his favourite thing in the entire universe.
Even his very first memory was created on Christmas Eve. Shara and Kes would dance together at every possible (and impossible) opportunity they got, but that very first dance in the light of their Christmas tree on Christmas Eve was special.
It was as special to them as the song that had to accompany their dance: 'Let Me Take Your Hand' by Hera and the Rebels.
It was the song that had played on an old record player when they had met in an airplane hangar for the very first time. It had played when they had shared their first kiss, when Kes had proposed to his beloved Shara, when they had their first dance at their wedding, and when Shara had told Kes with happy tears in her eyes that they were going to be parents.
Music like a tender hug wrapping its loving arms around you, caressing your soul and soothing your heart, leaving you feeling like nothing in the world could ever hurt you.
Would you let me take your hand
And hold you gently
And kiss you softly
If I said I loved you
That Christmas Eve, as his parents began to sway in tune with the first few bars of the old forty-five crackling over the loud speakers, little Poe had no idea that he had just become part of a very long and love-filled Dameron Christmas tradition.
He was simply the happiest little boy, cuddled against his Dad’s chest, who held him gently yet safely close to his heart. With his Mom taking his hands in hers and making funny faces at him while singing along to the music, his eyes sparkled even brighter than the lights of the Christmas decorations around him.
As soon as the song was over, he wiggled his tiny feet and clapped his little hands in excitement, squealing giddily, “‘gain pwease!”
And his parents didn’t mind at all. With the record playing over and over again, they took turns kissing each other and placing the softest of kisses on their son’s forehead, cooing how much they loved him.
Poe couldn’t get enough of it.
On his eighth Christmas Eve, as Poe clung to Shara’s leg during their dance, he decided that part of him couldn’t wait to grow up and find his special someone to dance to their song. He vividly imagined how he would look at them the same way as Kes was looking at Shara.
Of course, his parents would still be there and enjoy dancing right next to him. He would do a show of being embarrassed when his Mom would try to ruffle his hair, because for some weird reason, grown-ups were supposed to hate it, even though he wouldn’t actually mind at all. And his Mom and Dad would love you nearly as much as he would and his parents would be so happy for their son to carry on their Christmas tradition.
If only he had known. If only he had known that this would be the very last Christmas with his Mom. Maybe he would have clung to her a little tighter, maybe he wouldn’t have nicked quite so many Christmas cookies, maybe he would have told her how much he loved her just one more time.
But then again, if he had known, it probably wouldn’t have been the most wonderful Christmas ever or the last time that he could remember his Dad looking truly happy before everything changed forever.
Only a year later it was hard to believe that any of those beautiful memories had been real at all.
Despite his insurmountable grief, Kes had tried his best to make this Christmas as magical for his son as it used to be. It was just that he had never quite gotten the hang of how Shara had always managed to make the Christmas tree and their apartment look so beautiful and festive and welcoming. And no matter how many Christmas lights he would string or how many candles he would light, it seemed like all their warmth and brightness had left when Shara did.
It was the night before their first Christmas without his Mom when Poe woke up to the most desperate stifled sobs coming from the living room. Full of worry, he stumbled out of bed and through the flat, the sinking feeling in his tummy growing heavier with each step of his bare feet on the ice cold floor tiles.
When he reached the door to the living room, the picture unfolding in front of him nearly tore is heart apart: The hunched over figure of his Dad lying under the Christmas tree, face hidden behind his hands, crying so violently his whole body was shaking.
Before even being able to form a single coherent thought, Poe had already crouched down on the floor right next to his Dad, trying to pull him into a hug – just like he knew his Mom would have done to comfort him.
His arms didn’t quite reach all the way around the package that his Dad had folded himself into but Poe tried to make up for it by pouring all the softness and warmth and tenderness from his big little heart into his words when he said, “I love you, Daddy! It’s gonna be okay!”
His Dad didn’t react. So Poe tried again, squeezing him even tighter this time but all it drew from Kes was another heart-wrenching sob.
But Poe wasn’t going to give up that easily. After all, just because his Mom wasn’t here with them in person, it didn’t mean that she didn’t celebrate Christmas with them. And if she was looking down at them from her cloud in Heaven among all the most beautiful angels in the universe (because there was no doubt for Poe, that’s exactly where his Mom would be), it would surely break her heart to see her two boys crying on Christmas Eve. And he couldn’t let his Mom down, could he? Not at Christmas.
And there was one thing left to try.
Hurrying over to the record player, he found what he was looking for exactly where his Mom had stored it away neatly last year. Ever so carefully, as if handling the most precious item in the world, he let the record slide out of its sleeve and placed it on the turntable. Slowly and gently, just like his Mom had taught him, he lowered the tone arm before turning back to his Dad.
With the first few soft sounds floating across the room, Kes finally raised his head, looking up to where his son stood, holding out his hand for his Dad. As he slowly got on his feet, Poe took a step towards him and tried his best to put on a brave smile, his eyes encouraging and full of hope.
Kes looked at his son. And he looked at the record player. Then he walked straight past his son and with a cry of agony that made Poe stumble backwards with a start, Kes tore the record off the turntable and threw it to the ground with enough force to break it into a thousand pieces. Yet they were nothing compared to the millions of pieces that little Poe’s heart shattered into at this very moment.
As his father stormed out of the room, Poe kept staring at the broken remnants of the last happy memory of his family. Trying to understand what on earth had just happened. What had he done wrong?
Maybe it was the shock, maybe it was the confusion, but he didn’t even notice how he began to shiver as the cold crawled up from the floor over his bare feet and under his thin pyjamas. Until he could no longer tell whether the numbness creeping into his heart and soul came from the cold or the growing ache in his chest. He had never felt more lost or lonely in his entire life.
For the briefest of moments, he wondered whether it would be possible to glue the pieces back together again. But as he knelt down and began to pick them up slowly, one by one, that last flicker of hope was extinguished quickly.
As he pondered over what to do, he spotted the stack of Christmas napkins that his Mom had bought last year, after Poe had insisted that the teddy bear pictured on them looked just like his beloved plushie Mr. Beebs. He had spent hours sitting right next to her, learning how to fold them into the most intricate shapes, just like his Mom had done, until he had declared excitedly that his Mom would never have to worry about folding a set of napkins for their guests ever again because now she had Poe to take care of that. Taking one of the napkins from the stack now, he could vividly remember the fondness in her eyes as her smile had outshone his proud little grin.
After spreading the napkin out on the floor, he piled the pieces of the record up onto it, carefully and gently, until even the tiniest of pieces had been accounted for. Looking around the room for something to tie the napkin bundle up with, his gaze fell upon Mr. Beebs sitting on the couch with his tiny bow tie around his neck. It didn’t seem right to take it, but Poe apologized to his teddy and promised that he would only borrow it for a little while.
Having the napkin tied neatly together, he got up off the floor, taking one last look at the Christmas tree. A source of warmth and comfort for as long as he could remember, its lights and decorations almost seemed like they were mocking him now. As his eyes began to wander along its branches, his gaze came to rest on the star at the top of the tree.
“I am sorry, Mommy,” he whispered.
As Poe held the napkin bundle gently against his heart, the tears began to fall. Unseen and in silence, yet hot and burning.
He was still clutching the little bundle to his chest when he found himself crying quietly in his bed a little later. He held it even tighter when he could hear the soft footsteps of his father approaching.
“Poe?” Kes’ voice was so gentle, it was barely audible to his son.
“Poey, sweetheart… I am sorry! I am… I am so so so sorry!”
Staring at the wall in front of him, Poe couldn’t see how his father’s tears over losing the love of his life had turned into tears over the fear of losing his son. He couldn’t see how his father reached out his hand towards him, only to hesitate at the very last moment, too afraid that he would just make things worse.
He couldn’t see how Kes longed for nothing more than to hug Poe close to his heart and never let him go again, desperate to find a way to comfort his son without subjecting him to his own soul crushing pain.
All he could see, over and over again, was that moment when his father walked right past him to smash their record to pieces.
His father didn’t want to take his hand.
Determined that he didn’t want Kes to see him cry, Poe pulled the covers over his head. And just like he had wrapped the napkin around the broken pieces of the record, Poe could feel something else wrapping itself around his heart. Not nearly as gentle and careful, but way harder and tighter and indefinitely more painful.
His father didn’t want to take his hand.
It was the last time that either of them acknowledged the song. It was the last time that music was played in the Dameron household.
And Poe never danced again.
Tumblr media
Sometimes he would dream of it, though. Holding someone in his arms and swaying to the soft rhythm of a melody while waiting for Christmas cookies to bake in the oven or the first coffee of the day to finish brewing. But it never felt quite right. As soon as that longing ache would make itself known, he would shove it back to where it came from. Burying it a little deeper every time. After all, life was not a flipping Disney Christmas movie.
Yet there was a part of him that never stopped trying to find the song again. Even more so during that time of the year. Whether it was at the Christmas markets or at the shops, as soon as the softest sound of music could be heard anywhere, Poe would strain his ears hoping against hope to hear that comforting familiar tune just one more time.
Now and then he would hum the melody to himself, especially in those moments when he missed his Mom even worse than usual.
More than once he found himself sliding into a panic when he seemed to stumble over parts of the melody or he needed a little longer to remember some of the words. Every time that happened, he feared another piece of the memory of his Mom might slip away.
One night, after waking up in cold sweat again, he frantically scribbled down the lyrics onto the next best sheet of paper he could find as if they might be lost forever if he didn’t write them down this instant. After taking a few moments to catch his breath, he carefully folded the sheet and placed it into the little wooden box in his nightstand, which held the napkin bundle and the record sleeve.
Over the years, there were a few people that he tried to confide in but his attempts always ended up with him being made fun of. So he gave up those attempts too, burying his feelings deep under the growing pile of pain and ache and longing. They were obviously too silly to share them with anyone.
Not to you, though.
When Poe and you were about to spend your first Christmas together, it had been several years since he had bothered to put up any proper Christmas decorations at all. So when you asked him excitedly whether you could put them up together, he really did it more for you than for him.
Though he couldn’t deny that your enthusiasm was more than a little contagious. You turned the whole thing into a proper little event with Christmassy snacks and hot cocoa and festive music. After a while he found your joy so infectious that it made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Feelings that he hadn’t associated with Christmas for a long, long time.
He even sent both of you into a fit of giggles and laughter after somehow managing to completely wrap himself in tinsel rather than the Christmas tree.
And then you threw him completely off balance with one seemingly innocent little question: “So what’s your favourite Christmas tradition?”
Before he could tumble off the chair he was standing on, however, his instincts kicked in, making him fall back onto his standard go to answer: Chocolate glazed koyo berries. “My father had this really amazing way of turning them into the most delicious…” he began.
But it just felt wrong. Of course he loved his father’s chocolate koyo berries, he actually used to love them a lot. But there was something else. As he looked into your warm and loving eyes, something long forgotten tried to force its way up from the deepest pits of his heart. And try as he might, it refused to be pushed back down again this time.
Determined to keep it together, he turned away from you, biting his lips until they hurt. He was not going to cry. He was not going to ruin everything again.
“Poe? Hey… sweetie, your hands are shaking…”
Squeezing his eyes shut with enough force to give him a headache, he could hear the confusion in your voice turning into worry.
“Oh Poe, I am sorry, I should have known that this might bring back painful memories, I really shouldn’t have asked, I am so sorry…”
Trying to stifle the wave of sobs demanding to be let out, he shook his head vigorously, still refusing to look at you.
“No no no, you didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just… it’s silly!” he choked up.
You paused for a moment before saying gently, “It doesn’t look like it’s silly to you?”
He didn’t resist when you took his trembling hands in yours and helped him to climb down from the chair. Not letting go, you carefully held them steady in your hands, drawing soothing circles on them with your thumbs, as Poe kept staring at the floor.
“You don’t have to tell me now, if it’s too much,” you tried to reassure him.
“No, I want to, I just…” Grunting in frustration, he broke away and began to rub at his eyes with the palms of his hands with increasing force as if the motion would somehow be able to rub those pesky and unwelcome feelings away.
Carefully taking his hands into yours once more, you slowly led them away from his eyes. As you cupped his face with your hands, tenderly caressing over his temples with your thumbs, he finally looked at you, revealing his sore eyes glistening with tears and all the pain and grief that lay beneath.
It broke your heart.
You hesitated, as you had to fight your own tears welling up inside of you now before asking softly, “Is this about your Mom?”
Poe nodded ever so slightly.
Your voice turned even softer. “Does it have anything to do with the little box you keep in your night stand?”
Of course you had seen the way that he looked at that box. You had seen how he would rest his hand on that box, how his expression would turn from soft to pained and to soft again. Now and then he had even seemed to be humming a soft little melody while gently caressing over the lid of the box. Yet despite all of your questions, it had never felt right to ask him about it before he was ready to open up to you.
Closing his eyes again, Poe took a few shaky breaths. Letting his fingers wander up your arms, until they came to rest on your hands still holding his face, he tried to ground himself, focussing his attention on you. Your kindness, your gentleness, your warmth.
“Do you really want to know?” he finally managed to ask before his voice broke again.
“I do,” you said gingerly. “Of course I do. But… I wouldn’t want you to feel like you’d have to tell me anything that you aren’t ready to share yet.”
Nodding slowly, he furrowed his brow, deepening the pained expression on his face. An even more overwhelming wave of sadness radiated from his eyes, spreading over his already grief-stricken features. He tried to open and shut his mouth a few times before giving up and taking you by the hand to lead you into the bedroom.
You knelt down on the floor right next to him while he opened the drawer of his nightstand to remove the little wooden box and carefully opened the lid, revealing its contents to you. You saw the record sleeve and the lyric sheet and the napkin bundle tied together with the bowtie borrowed from Poe’s old childhood teddy Mr. Beebs.
Taking a deep breath, Poe took the bundle out of the box and placed it on the floor in front of you, unwrapping it ever so carefully.
He hadn’t opened it in decades. The moment that the napkin came undone around the broken pieces of the record, the tight layer of repressed feelings and ignored pain and buried grief wrapped around his heart fell away with it. Until there was nothing left to hold back the swelling flood of tears.
As soon as the first desperate sob ripped through his body so violently that it threatened to take his breath away, you were there. Catching him, holding him, comforting him, sheltering him.
And Poe cried like he had never cried before.
“It’s not fair! It’s not flipping fair, it’s not… she should be here… she should still be here… here with us…”
Everything seemed to bubble up to the surface at once. Pain and anger and confusion and helplessness.
“I wanted to hug him, I… I just really needed to hug him and… and I wanted to, but… but… but I was too small and… and… how could he just smash it?”
You were barely able to make any sense of all his memory fragments and turbulent emotions that were demanding attention all at once, but that wasn’t important right now.
“He came to apologize that night but I couldn’t… I couldn’t… I didn’t want him to see me cry and I… I… I should have…”
As you held him gently in your arms, he clung desperately to you, sobbing helplessly against your shoulder.
“I just… I… I failed them. Both…”
“Oh, Poe,” you whispered as you buried your face in his curls. And even though you knew that he wouldn’t be ready to believe you yet, you added gently but firmly, “You didn’t fail anybody!”
Smoothing some damp curls from his forehead, you pressed a tender kiss to the top of his head, when a new wave of tears began to stream down his face. Hot and desperate tears that had never been given a chance to dry, burning in his heart during all those years.
And now you were kissing them away. Softly. Every single one of them, even tough they were replaced by fresh ones immediately. Until sheer exhaustion made him collapse into your embrace.
As you cradled the back of his head, steadying him against your chest, rocking him gently back and forth, you knew that it wasn’t just your boyfriend crying in your arms. You held the wounded little boy, who couldn’t understand. Who blamed himself without even knowing what he had done wrong. Who hurt so deeply and yet would rather take care of everybody else around him before tending to his own wounds.
“I am here for you, Poe,” you cooed gently, hugging him tight. “I love you!”
And for the first time in decades, it felt like a few of the million shattered pieces of his heart were beginning to heal.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to Poe, you made it your year’s goal to find the song for him.
The fact that Poe hadn’t been able to find it in all those years despite all his efforts, not even in the endless vastness of the internet, didn’t deter you in the slightest. Or so you thought. At least for the first eleven months of the year.
By the time December came around again, you were so close to admitting defeat that Poe began to worry about what brought you so low, even fearing that he might have been the one dampening your mood with his lack of Christmas spirit.
So, in an attempt to make up for that, he suggested taking you to the annual charity Christmas bazaar at your local school, hoping that a little Christmassy shopping spree for charity and the sparkly atmosphere of the Christmas lights might cheer you up again.
You tried not to get your hopes up, you really did. But the moment that Poe popped off to the restrooms and you found yourself stranded in front of a stall with several boxes of old forty-fives, you had to start browsing, of course.
Sorting swiftly through the records, you had gone through at least fifty of them, when your brain gave you a little jolt. You stopped. Going backwards very slowly, you looked at each of them again until you got back to the forty-second one. You carefully removed the record from the box. You read the title on the sleeve. You stared at it in disbelief. And you read it again. You shook your head. You read the title a third time. And despite your best attempts to stay calm, you couldn’t stop yourself from letting out a little scream that made the elderly gentleman behind the display ask in concern whether you were all right. It took every ounce of self restraint you could muster to keep yourself from throwing your arms around him and hug him until he turned blue. In the end, you hugged him anyway.
After handing the stall owner enough money to prompt him to ask you again whether you were all right, you hid the record in your bag and quickly hurried past the next few stalls, hoping not to give anything away.
You still weren’t able to keep the shine out of your eyes, though. Which Poe noticed immediately the minute that he caught up with you.
“What’s gotten into you?” he asked raising a confused eyebrow.
Letting out a happy sigh that you weren’t able to contain, you smiled, “I’m just really looking forward to Christmas!”
His gaze softened as he pulled you towards you, placing a tender kiss on top of your head. Gently rubbing your noses together, his smile grew wider until it painted crinkles around his eyes.
As he rested his forehead against yours, he whispered, “Me too!” And for the first time since what felt like forever, he actually meant it.
Tumblr media
You spent the better part of the remainder of the run-up to Christmas trying to come up with the best possible plan to present the record to him. Should you simply hide it in a pile of other gifts in his stocking, should you make him close his eyes while you put the record on, should you wake him up with the music on Christmas Morning or maybe something completely different? In the end you decided that you would leave it up to Poe because the last thing you wanted was to overwhelm him in any way or even cause him more hurt.
When you found yourself cuddling with him on the couch on Christmas Eve, however, it became increasingly harder for you to remain patient until Christmas Morning.
Lying half atop on you, Poe had completely melted into your embrace, burying his face in the crook of your neck, while you played with his hair. The ease and trust with which he relaxed in your arms melted your heart. You were just about to turn your head and place a gentle kiss to his temple, when he lifted his head.
“Are you okay, bups?” He asked, raising a worried eyebrow at you.
“Hmmm?” you mumbled a little absentmindedly. “Sure, why wouldn’t I be?”
“You’re as tense as a loaded spring about to go off. And I mean that in a very non-euphemistic, sfw way. Although…” he wriggled his eyebrows, looking way too cute with his tousled hair curling itself into every possible direction, “I wouldn’t mind adding some ‘n’ into the mix a little later…”
You couldn’t help breaking into giggles, which made Poe grin in return. “That’s better,” he smiled, placing a sweet little kiss to your forehead before furrowing his brow again. “Wanna tell me why you are so nervous?”
You really hadn’t intended to spoil this peaceful moment but you also knew that Poe wouldn’t stop worrying until he knew what was up. With a heavy sigh, you reluctantly tried to wriggle yourself free from underneath Poe to sit up, drawing some grunts of protest and a pout from him.
“I have a little surprise for you.”
Humming in a slightly more relaxed tone, he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you towards him again.
“And can we stay on the couch for that or do we have to transfer to the bedroom?”
You snorted, “I’ve clearly given you the wrong idea now.”
With another smile, you brushed a few stray curls from his forehead and left a soft kiss in their place.
“You can stay here. I’ll be right back.”
Getting up to fetch your little present from the hiding place in the bedroom, you swiftly returned and set down next to Poe before giving it to him.
It took a few moments for Poe to realize what he was holding in his hands. As they began to tremble, he couldn’t help but keep staring at the record.
“How… where did you…” he whispered.
You gently laid your hands on his before explaining softly, “Actually… you kind of led me to it yourself when you took me to the Christmas bazaar three weeks ago.”
He let out a small shaky laugh that turned into a soft sob.
You immediately began to rub his back in soothing circles, leaving tender kisses all over the side of his face until he began to lean into you.
“Would you like me to play it?” you asked him gently.
He slowly peeled his gaze away from the record to look at you. As his big brown puppy dog eyes began to sparkle, he slowly nodded as if in a daze. He had gotten so used to hearing the song only in his memory, had both dreaded and hoped for this moment over and over again. As you put the record on and the song began to float across the room, it felt too surreal for him to grasp.
The music sounded even softer than you had imagined it. And so much more comforting than Poe remembered.
It sounded like the warmth of his Mom’s hand caressing his face and his parents’ laughter and tickle fights and the smell of his Mom’s baking and Kes scooping him up to carry him on his shoulders and morning cuddles and running towards his parents’ embrace. Both of them holding out their hands for him.
Just like you did now.
“Dance with me?” you asked him softly. Warm and open and welcoming while still giving him all the room that he might need.
Poe’s tears fell more slowly this time. As you laid your arms around him, pulling him towards you, swaying both of you to the soft rhythm of the music, he didn’t fight the soft and shaky sobs that turned another layer of destructive pain and grief into hopeful feelings of comfort and familiarity and home.
His head found his place leaning on your shoulder as your cheek came to rest against his. You held him gently and at the same time so close that there seemed to be no room left for anything that might hurt him. And yet your embrace was so soft that he knew he could trust you with his wounded bare heart in your hands.
As he wept in your arms, you kept caressing over his curls, leaving a trail of soft kisses along his hairline until his tears began to mix with your own. The moment Poe noticed the wet streaks running down your face, his eyes widened in alarm and he quickly reached up to wipe your tears away. But you gently laid your hands on his and shook your head with a sparkly-eyed smile.
“Don’t worry about those, Poe. Not all tears are bad.”
And Poe’s eyes that had been sparkling with tears of pain and sorrow slowly began to sparkle with something else.
It might not have been quite what he had imagined the first time to be like. Dancing to his parents’ song in the light of the Christmas tree with his own special someone.
Yet as his sobs subsided to the gentle rhythm of your soft kisses to his face and your hands tenderly smoothing over his hair, right now in this moment, he felt like the luckiest person in the universe.
Except for one thing.
When he let out an involuntary sigh, you pressed one more kiss to the top of his head before asking, “Why don’t you call him? Ask him to come over for Christmas?”
“Who?” Poe raised his head in mild confusion.
“Your father?” you smiled.
“How did…” Trailing off and letting out another sigh, Poe began to shake his head. “Me and my father stopped doing Christmas years ago. I don’t even have his number.”
“Well, funny thing…”
As Poe began to raise his eyebrows, you allowed yourself to break into a mischievous little grin, making him smile through his tears.
“I spoke to Auntie Leia the other day, and…” you began.
“…she had his number and gave it to you?” Poe finished your sentence in only mild disbelief.
“Of course she did,” you nodded and smiled again. “I don’t know how but it’s like she knew.”
Poe shook his head, unable to suppress a soft giggle. “She always does.”
You hesitated a little before you asked him, “Did you know that your father keeps asking after you whenever he meets her?”
Sobering up immediately, Poe lowered his gaze to the ground, furrowing his brow. “No, I… I didn’t…”
“Hey…” Cupping his face and gently guiding him to look at you again, you asked, “I can call him for you if you don’t feel up to it?” Your eyes softened before you added, “And no, Poe… I don’t think that would be ‘silly’.”
Poe let out a shaky breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding. “Could you do that for me…?”
So you did. And less than an hour later, Kes was standing at your door. His knock was so soft and cautious that you would have missed it, had you not been on your way to the kitchen at exactly that moment.
He was shivering from the cold as it looked like he hadn’t even bothered to take the time and find appropriate clothes for the freezing temperatures outside. Yet when you had introduced yourself and motioned quickly for him to come in and step into the warmth, he hesitated.
“Are you really sure that Poe wants to see me?” he asked full of doubt.
You gave him a reassuring smile. “Yes he does. Of course he does! We just didn’t expect you to be here so early.”
“Oh… if you want me to come back later…”
“No, no, please… come in! You must be freezing.”
As Kes stepped into the light of your flat, you could see the clear remnants of tears on his face that had been hastily wiped away. And your heart broke for him just as it had for his son.
Poe had spent the last half hour bent over your record player, carefully removing remnants of dust from the needle and the grooves of the record. Deeply focused on his work, he gave a little start when you entered the living room, announcing brightly, “Look who is here, sweetie.”
“Hello, Poe!”
Turning around, Poe let out a soft, “Hey…” before clearing his throat and saying more firmly, “I am glad that you came.”
“Really?!”
His father’s reaction threw him off for a few moments. Was he really so utterly convinced that Poe wouldn’t want to see him?
Kes had to swallow a few times as he began to fumble nervously with the handle of the bag he had brought with him.
“Oh… these are for you!” he finally said, producing a huge bag of chocolate koyo berries.
Poe gasped in surprise. “But… these take days to make, how did you…?”
The smile that spread across Kes’ face somehow made him look even sadder. “I still make them every year, just in case you might... Never mind, you probably don’t even like them anymore, I just thought…”
Taking a step towards Kes, Poe reassured him, “No, no, of course I still love them, that’s really thoughtful of you… Dad!”
For a brief moment, Poe’s gaze flickered over to you and you started the record player. It took only a few notes for Kes to recognize the melody and his eyes widened, displaying a myriad of emotions.
“I… I’ve been searching everywhere,” he whispered. “I thought that maybe if I could find it, if I could just… you might…” Kes’ voice broke and he closed his eyes for a moment, trying to gain his composure.
When he opened them again, his son was standing right in front of him, offering his hand to his Dad. The look in his eyes was neither angry nor reproachful, but open and warm and encouraging with maybe a slightly pleading undertone. And it hit him full force just how much Poe reminded him of Shara in that moment.
Clasping a hand over his mouth, Kes let out a half-stifled shaky sob as his eyes began to glisten with tears. Taking a careful step towards his son, he took Poe’s hand into both of his. Placing the softest of kisses on his son’s hand, he gently held it against his chest right above his heart.
“Oh, Poey,” he whispered. “I am so... I am so…”
The moment his voice faltered again, Poe pulled his Dad into a hug. This drew a surprised little gasp from Kes before he threw his arms around his son, holding him closer than he had ever held him before. Like he was never going to let him go again. He knew that he might not be able to make up for lost time. But he could show Poe how much he meant to him right here and right now. Between violent sobs and desperate kisses to his temple and his cheek, Kes pulled his son close over and over again.
“Me, too!” Poe whispered through his own tears. “It’s okay, Dad… I love you!”
Maybe okay wasn’t exactly the right word. Maybe it was never really gonna be okay again. But as they both clung to each other, it certainly felt more okay than it had in a very long time. Maybe this could be the beginning of creating their new okay.
As his Dad’s desperate kisses slowly turned softer, he pulled back just enough to be able to gently cup his son’s face in his hands. “I love you, too, Poe. So so so damn much!”
You were just about to sneak out of the door to give them some room when Poe softly called out to you, “Hey… c’mere!”
They both invited you to join them with open arms. There may have been some feet casualties before the three of you found your rhythm but those were easily laughed away.
Christmas Eve turned into Christmas Day and Poe was still dancing. Safe and snug in a hug sandwich between the two people that he loved more than anything else in this world and who loved him just as much in return.
As Poe’s face once again found his familiar place in the crook of your neck, he mumbled, “I wish my Mom could have met you. I really wish that she could have been here with us just one more time.”
“I think she is, Poe!”
Instead of an answer, he let out a little sob against your shoulder, hugging both you and his Dad a little tighter, as Kes gently ruffled his hair.
And when Poe looked up again and his gaze came to rest on the star at the top of the Christmas tree, he could have sworn that it shone brighter than he could ever remember.
Sometimes life may cause you wounds that seem to hurt so deeply that all the time in the universe wouldn’t be able to heal them.
And sometimes… sometimes all you need to make the pain a little more bearable is someone to take your hand, hold you gently, kiss you softly and tell you that they love you.
it was rare for you, or anyone, to see poe without his jacket during the day. it was the one thing he always made sure to have with him. well, that and bb8. no matter the weather, or the mission, the deep brown leather was always cradling his shoulders.
and yet, as you stood in poe's room, you couldn't help but eye the materialistic item as it sat before you. draped over the back of a chair, where he had taken it off only moments ago, before disappearing out the door.
it was certainly an upgrade from his last jacket, and there was no denying how good he looked in it. was it heavy? was it warm? did it... smell like poe? these were all things you had wondered before.
looking back at the door there was still no sign of poe, and you weren't sure how long he would take, but there was a tingling feeling in the pit of your tummy that was dying to try it on. surely he wouldn't mind, though, he also didn't need to know.
you decide to bite the temptation and pick it up from it's spot. so long as you put it back exactly where it was, what was the harm in trying it on?
the outside was cool to the touch and it was pretty hefty for a jacket, but poe was strong, so there was no doubt it weighed almost nothing to him. though as you slipped your arms inside and pulled it around yourself, the weight dispersed and it just felt...
...cozy.
the inside was softer than you thought it would be. smooth as it glides across your skin, and the longer you wore it, you realised that it did smell like poe. the faint musk of him invading your senses as you hugged it tighter to yourself.
"and what do we have here?" poe's voice cuts your thoughts and you quickly twirl to see him standing in the doorway. he takes a moment to look you up and down before returning his gaze to yours. "y'know, if you wanted to try it on, all you had to do was ask."
there's a playfulness to his tone and the longer he stares at you, a smirk slowly begins to tug at the corner of his lips. you watch as he kicks the door shut behind him and takes a few steps towards you.
"you aren't mad?" your voice is quiet, not scared, just quiet.
he shakes his head, taking the opportunity to take you in once more as he takes the sides of the jacket in his hands and pulls you closer to him. "no. this is a good look for you. in fact, i might have to get you to start wearing it more often."
"think that can be arranged," you match his grin now and press a slow kiss to his lips.
"oh, i bet."
“Your boyfriend treats you like shit” the words echoed over and over again in Poe’s head and hung over the tip of his tongue, aching to say them out loud.
You didn’t need to hear the words from him, you already knew that; you were the first one aware that he treated you like shit.
You had asked Poe if you could spend the evening in his quarters, now sitting on his floor downing a bottle of spotchka between the two of you, explaining that you found one more proof that your boyfriend was cheating on you.
Cheating on someone was one thing, but being so conspicuous and obvious about it was something else.
He didn’t even try to hide it; in fact you didn’t know if he tried to, but if he did, he was certainly doing a poor job at it.
You hadn’t been dating for long, and thankfully you weren’t that attached to him, but if he cheated so early into the relationship then did he ever even care about you? Were you so boring that he had to go look somewhere else?
Poe bit his lip incredulously as he looked at you shaking your head in despair before taking a long sip from the spotchka bottle.
It drove him insane that someone like you dated someone like him, but most of all it drove him insane that someone like him cheated on someone like you.
“I think I’m gonna blaster shot your boyfriend” Poe spat out of the blue, saying it out loud though he didn’t mean to.
“Oh he’s not my boyfriend anymore” you snorted, letting the bottle slide towards Poe as you brought your knees to your chest. He stopped the bottle as the neck hit the palm of his hand, preventing the liquid from spilling out. “He just doesn’t know it yet. But does that change anything for him anyways” you muttered rhetorically under your breath, letting your forehead rest against your knees.
“You know what,” he started, taking a sip from the bottle before continuing. “I always found him obnoxious. Apparently never takes orders correctly and struts around. And he’s gotta be one of the worst mechanics I’ve ever seen in the Resistance. Couldn’t even properly run tests on Beebs. What did you even see in him?” Poe asked raising an eyebrow, still genuinely confused that you dated a guy like this one. It was nonsensical for you to date an asshole of his kind. You were smart, and he knew you wouldn’t let yourself be pushed around because you knew how to stand up for yourself.
“I don’t know.” your lie slipped away easily. What you saw in him was the rich dark curls and deep brown eyes that reminded you of someone. Unfortunately the guy couldn’t compare, and by far. “Maybe I happened to be desperate” you declared, looking back at Poe. it was half true.
Poe chuckled before taking another sip of the washed out blue liquid. He winced at the strong taste of the alcohol, and took his jacket off and put it aside as the warmth of the drink took over his body.
You sighed and reached out as he handed you the bottle back. “You know what’s the worst part of this? I don’t think I even care.” you admitted letting a groan out when you sat back against the wall.
“Really?” he asked, the expression on your face telling him otherwise. Maybe what you were saying was genuine, but there was something beyond that, and he knew you too well to be convinced of the contrary.
“...Yeah. Does that make me a bad person?”
Poe snorted and burst into laughs. “Oh sweetheart you’re not the bad person here” he smiled. “But it’s a good thing you’re not suffering from it!” he exclaimed, shrugging. “I wouldn’t want you to be heartbroken over a guy as shitty as this one.”
“Yeah” you mumbled, leaning your cheek over your forearm propped against your knees.
Poe observed you closely. You looked tired, and despite the results of a tough mission and the deception of finding another person’s clothes in your boyfriend’s room you still looked like the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in this galaxy.
“What” you called glancing at Poe, noticing that his gaze was glued and lost on you.
Poe shook his head, looking away from you. “You deserve someone good.” he declared, a small frown on his face as he bit on his lower lip and nodded.
“Yeah well, anyone’s better than him at this point” you chuckled, extending your legs on the floor. Except you didn’t want just anyone.
Maybe you weren’t sad over the fact that your ‘boyfriend’ was a cheating piece of shit, but you were over one specific cute pilot you had been having a massive crush on for years.
He cleared his throat before talking. “I don’t know if this is what you need to hear but,” he paused, a small smirk growing over his face. “I could treat you right” he shrugged.
“Don't make fun of me” you chuckled, grabbing the bottle at your feet. “I don’t doubt you could treat me well” you admitted, raising your eyebrows before drinking from the bottle.
“I’m not making fun of you” Poe snorted in disbelief. “I’m very serious, I could be a better boyfriend than him. If you let me be”
You looked at him and frowned, trying to decipher whether he was making fun of you or not. You shook your head and rolled your eyes. “Come on Poe, this is the spotchka talking” you said shrugging it off, trying to diffuse the tension, not believing Poe really meant what he proposed.
“You drank way more than me and you’re not even drunk, I can’t be drunk.” he said as a groan escaped him while he got up from the floor. “Look” he paced around the room. “I can still walk straight”
“Pfffff” you sighed, shaking your head before laughing.
“What? Wanna bet that I can be a better boyfriend than that shitpile of a man?” he asked, stopping in place.
“Okay.” he half expected you to take his offer seriously. In his mind, he expected you to decline his offer with a sarcastic comment, and he would respect that you don’t want anything with him. It would break his heart, but at least he would know for certain and would try to move on.
“Really?” he asked raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah” you shrugged, putting the bottle back down on the floor.
He kneeled in front of you, your gaze following him as he did so.
“Really?” he asked again, one side of his mouth rising into a smile.
“Yes Poe” you whispered, the same smirk growing on your face. “Be my boyfriend”
He licked his lips in a quick motion and nodded frantically.
“Okay. Let’s do that” he smiled, and reached for one of your hands. He looked at the ring you were wearing, a ring he had brought you from his homeplanet, Yavin IV. The gesture had made your heart skip a beat.
“Never took it off” you declared as you looked at it too, the carved symbols shining slightly.
“I’ll take you to Yavin IV one day” he promised, bringing your hand to his mouth and leaving a kiss at your knuckles. You smiled at him and blushed a bit, because even if you were accustomed to Poe’s constant flirting, it felt real now.
“I would love that” you smiled back at him, brushing his hair back with your other hand, which shifted to rest on his lightly stubbled cheek.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked,
“Yes you can. Please” you almost implored him.
“Good.” a sly smirk adorned his face before his lips slotted against yours.
It was soft, soft but a bit desperate, and you felt like teenagers all over again.
You framed Poe’s face and brought him closer, almost making him fall; thankfully he had enough reflexes to block his fall by putting his hand on the wall behind you. You both laughed into the kiss before he pulled away, a dopey smile on his face.
“Fuck your cheating boyfriend” he whispered accusingly, stroking his thumb along your cheek.
“What cheating boyfriend?” you asked sarcastically. “My boyfriend treats me well” you declared, confidence gaining you again.
A laugh escaped from his lips, and he grabbed the spotchka bottle before quickly kissing your forehead.
“I’d stay down there to kiss you more but my knees are starting to hurt” he said getting up again.
“Okay grandpa” you teased him. “But I can get up, you have no excuse”
“I’m fine with it, and what can I refuse you since I’m the best boyfriend ever?” he asked rhetorically, offering you his free hand to help you get up.
“Straight up best boyfriend ever?” you asked as he helped you up before taking a gulp of the blue liquid and putting the bottle on the table behind him.
“You’ll see!” he exclaimed holding his hands up, raising his eyebrows too. “I’m planning on making up for your latest disastrous relationship so you won’t have to think about it ever again”
You nodded, a downwards impressed smile on your face.
“Sounds like something a perfect boyfriend would do” you admitted.
He softly smiled, a new kind of smile you had never seen on him. “C’mere” he called, extending his arms.
You weakly smiled at him and threw your arms around him, resting your head over his shoulder. He hugged you back and cupped the back of your head. This was possibly the best hug you even received, even if you had hugged him so many times before.
“A hug is nice but where are my kisses?” you teased after a while, looking up at him.
He chuckled before executing himself, taking his role very seriously.
And the next day, the face your ex made when you told him you couldn’t hang out because you already had a date was priceless.
comments and reblogs are greatly appreciated :)))))))
Based on this request by @themarvelousbee: Affectionate things that make me fall in love prompt #12: “the hand behind their nape, when they're embarrassed” drabble with poe dameron my entire world
Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader Content: fluff Word Count: 252
Happy Poevember!
Finn and Rey see you there.
But Poe has his back to you. You've all just returned from a successful mission and Leia has announced a celebration.
A brief indulgence to lighten the strain of war.
Drinks and dancing are the main priorities and everyone seems to be pairing off with a loved one or hanging out with a group.
"Don't tell me you're gonna hang around with us all night," Finn teases, winking past his best friend's shoulder at you. Subtle.
A protesting Poe's hands land on his hips. "You guys are ditching me? Seriously?"
"Come on, Poe," Rey goads, "there's no one you want to take dancing? You of all people."
Poe Dameron never wastes a chance to shake his hips.
"Well...actually...there is someone," he confesses, "but you can't tell them - "
"Tell who what?" You pipe, appearing behind Poe with a devilish grin on your face.
Poe's head snaps around so fast at the sound of your voice. "Uh, no one. Nothing," he lamely attempts, scrubbing his hand over the nape of his neck as his eyebrows shift boyishly, as if he's in trouble.
"So...you don't want to dance with me tonight? Okay, come on, Finn," you tease, watching in amusement as his mouth falls open.
Rey and Finn chuckle at their oblivious best friend.
"So...you knew? All three of you?" He narrows his gorgeous, dark brown eyes.
"I knew there was someone," you shrug, biting your bottom lip flirtatiously, "but thanks for confirming it's me."
~
The mission was simple: get into the party, observe and gather information on the First Order officers, and report back. You and Poe completed the first two steps with ease; the two of you worked together seamlessly for a long time now. But, once the important work was done, you let your eyes wander, and you couldn’t tear your gaze off of Poe. He looked so effortlessly handsome all dressed up like this, almost like he was nobility. That was his cover after all, and it came as no surprise to you that everyone bought the lie without question.
Every time Poe looked at you, though, you forced yourself to look away. You didn’t want to be too obvious out in a crowd, especially when the two of you were undercover. Yet, you couldn’t help the way you looked at Poe, and of course you noticed you weren’t the only one with a lingering gaze on his figure.
Poe noticed, of course. Nothing got past him. And the truth was he couldn’t tear himself away from you either. You had become good friends, best friends. And after many missions together, the two of you came to an arrangement: you would hook up for release, but it never went more than physical.
It quickly became more for both of you, though you each kept your true feelings hidden from the other.
Tonight, however, Poe wanted to change that. “See something you like, sweetheart?” he leaned in and asked you with a mischievous smirk on his face.
Covering up the way you were blatantly staring at him, you grinned back, “Maybe.”
He rested a hand on your waist as he leaned in closer, “How about you and I get out of here then,” Poe’s tone dropped and sent a shiver down your spine.
The facade broke and you looked at him with an adoring expression. Poe’s eyes bore into your soul as he looked at you with a smile on his face and a softness in his features. Through the banter, you saw the genuineness in him, and it made your heart skip a beat. You couldn’t stand it any longer, you needed him badly. “Come on,” your own tone dropped as you slipped your hand in his.
“Right behind you,” Poe’s smile widened as he let you lead him away from the party and down a darkened alleyway.
You knew the layout of the area by heart in case of the need for an escape. But this was not an escape, it was a rush of desperation. You couldn’t wait until you got back to the ship, you were too needy for Poe to wait any longer. So, you ducked both of you into an abandoned room in the alleyway.
The moment the door was shut, you lept at Poe and crashed your lips together in a desperate and heated kiss. He moaned into you, surprised by your sudden action, but Poe wouldn’t dream of pushing you away. Instead, he pulled you closer so that your chests were smashed together as he deepened the kiss.
Breaking away with a gasp, Poe looked at you with wide eyes, “I like you like this,” he grinned.
You mirrored the mischievous smirk he gave you earlier as you pushed him back against the wall, “In that case,” you started, feeling bold, “I’ll admit I couldn’t keep my eyes off you tonight,” you purred as you slowly dropped to your knees, never breaking eye contact with Poe.
“Sweetheart…” Poe suddenly realized you had the same plan as he did tonight, you just beat him to the punch.
He murmured your name and caressed your head as you unzipped his pants. You looked so beautiful on your knees for him like that, and the rush of emotions went right to his cock. It jumped free from his pants and you eyed it hungrily, licking your lips as you wrapped a hand around Poe’s length and pumped it a few times.
Poe groaned your name again as you leaned forward and kissed the tip. He helped onto your head with one hand while his other landed on your shoulder. His head leaned back against the wall and a shiver ran up his spine when you finally wrapped your lips around his cock, taking him into your mouth in one movement.
“Fuck!” Poe cried out as the warmth of your mouth engulfed him.
You hummed around his length as you ran your tongue along the bottom, savoring the way Poe shivered at the action. You smirked around him as you bobbed your head up and down, slowing you initially rushed movements. Poe’s moans filled the tiny room as you worked him with your mouth.
Poe bit his lip to try and stifle his moans, but you were just too good. Part of him worried you didn’t get far enough from the party and you might get caught, but when you sucked hard, every other thought vanished from his mind. All Poe could think about was how wonderful you were on your knees with his cock in your mouth, and how good you made him feel.
As much as you wanted to keep your eyes on Poe and watch his every expression, you couldn’t help but flutter then shut. You savored the taste of his length on your tongue as you ran it up and down. You savored every little moan and whimper Poe let out when you brushed over a particularly sensitive spot. You savored the way he tightened his grip on you. You savored every little detail about this moment.
When Poe tugged on you a little harder, you knew he wouldn’t last much longer. You grinned around him as you worked him faster, sucking harder, taking him deeper down your throat. You pulled back enough so just the tip was still in your mouth and you swirled your tongue around the head a few times before you took him fully in your mouth again.
“Oh fuck… Sweetheart,” Poe cried out as his breaths became heavier, “Shit!”
You speed up the way you bobbed your head and sucked as hard as you could, determined to throw Poe over the edge. And within moments, you got what you wanted as he came hard with your name on his tongue. Filling your mouth, you gagged for a moment before you swallowed around him. Not wanting to miss a single drop, you wrapped your lips tighter around his cock and swallowed several times. Tears filled your eyes as you felt full, but you kept going.
Breaking away with a loud gasp, you let a little bit of Poe’s release dribble down the corner of your mouth as you waited for him to open his eyes. After a few heavy breaths, he did just that, and you took that moment to lick your lips and gather that last bit, putting on a show for him.
“Fuck,” Poe breathed.
Both of you burst into a fit of giggle, and neither of you knew exactly why. Perhaps it was the overwhelming emotions that overtook both of you in the heat of the moment. Perhaps it was because both of you secretly felt more for the other, and you each realized it at the same time without the words needed.
Poe dropped down to his knees and joined you on the floor. He cupped your face with both hands and kissed you deeply, taking your breath away and tasting himself on your tongue. You moaned into him as you surrendered yourself, fresh tears filling your eyes from the fresh wave of emotions.
When he broke away, Poe looked at you with sincere adoration in his eyes, “Let me repay the favor,” he kissed you again, “Again,” he kissed you, “And again,” another kiss, “And again…”
hey! i wanted to send a request, no pressure obvi! fluff 17/angst 6 w/ poe dameron, i was thinking enemies to lovers hurt/comfort. i loce your work<3
Your heart - Poe Dameron x reader, Side note im not entirely sure how squadrons work leave me be 😔
Prompts - 17 - “I almost lost you… i wouldn’t have known what to do” , 6 - “Your heart stopped… it stopped”
It was a simple mission, no one was meant to be in danger, all your team had to do was head to an outer rim planet to pick up some crates of food from your allies. Everything was fine when your squad landed and even after you had loaded everything on to your ships. The senator who greeted you though had become anxious. You didn’t need the force to sense that something was off with him. It took you a second to register that someone was speaking to you. “Are we all good to leave commander?” Blue twos voice echoed in your ear. “We’re all clear here, see you at base two” You affirmed and Two flew off the planets surface.
By the time the next few members took off it was just you, four, and six. The senator had begun sweating profusely which was weird considering it was rather chilly on this planet. “Senator are you alright do you need to go inside?” You said smiling softly at him. A look of guilt flashed across his face as he looked from you to your two squad members. “I’m quite alright dear” He said shaking his head. Out of the corner of your eye you saw something dart through the woods. “Why don’t you go back inside senator” You said calmly as you realized something wasn’t alright. General Leia’s voice came in through your comm. You stepped away from the senator.
“Yes general?” You said still scanning your surroundings. “Are you on your way back? We have all of your squad except you and four and six” She asked calmly. At the mention of your friends your eyes darted back to where you saw them last. They were both still sitting there waiting for your command. You took another step away from the senator before speaking again. “General something’s wrong with the senator. He’s acting weird and things keep moving through the woods” You said as quiet as you could so you wouldn’t alert anyone. “Do we need to send a rescue team?” She asked trying to keep the concern out of her voice.
“I’m not sure-“ Your voice was cut off by the sound of someone’s blaster hitting the wall right next to to four. “Run, Now!” You shouted at the two of them who scrambled off behind a few houses. “Yes, we need back up, quick” You said into the comm before running after the senator. Your comm had fallen out of your ear in the chase but eventually you caught him. “What the hell is wrong with you” You said pushing him against a wall. “Please you don’t understand, they took my family they said they’d only give them back in exchange for you” He said crying. You loosened your grip but still held him there. “And what about my team?! What if they died” You demanded before looking around to make sure you two were safe.
“They said they wouldn’t hurt them” He said shaking. “Oh and you believed them?” You snickered. “Get back to your house right now. I have to find my team” You said shoving him back towards his home. As you watched him head home you darted off in the last direction you saw four and six. With no comm you had zero communication. Eventually you came upon six holding four behind a wall. Four had taken a bad hit to the stomach. You quickly took off your jacket and pressed it to her abdomen. “Hey give me your comm” You said to six. Six handed over his comm and your ear was filled with the black squadrons voices.
“Hello?” Your voice echoed through Poe’s ship. “Y/n?” He said relief present in his voice. “Poe” You sighed before taking a breath. “What the hell happened?” He questioned as his team entered the planets atmosphere. “The senator did it. They took his family poe” You said quietly. “What the hell are they after all the supplies are back at base?” His voice said back. “Me. They’re after me” You said looking at six as some troopers ran past the wall. “Listen four is injured someone needs to come get her” You said cutting poe off before he could even speak. “Three is almost there but what do they want with you?” Poe said as he directed three to your location.
You were about to speak before you were cut off by a blaster sounding close to you. You nodded to six before heading out from behind the wall. A few troopers stood at the other end of the alley you were hidden in. You walked out with your hands up slowly heading towards the group. One of them shoots at you and you move to the side effectively dodging it. When you looked back you saw them arguing with each other. You couldn’t hear it al through their helmets but you heard “Them” and “Unharmed”. You pulled out your own blaster and shot the one closest to you.
They fell to the ground and another trooper shot at you. They managed to hit you in the stomach as the black squadron finally reached you all. They took out the troopers standing there and you smiled at poe as you leaned against the wall. He started walking towards you before you fell to the ground. You couldn’t hear much but you definitely heard your name as Poe cradled you before you lost consciousness. When you woke next it was to the beeping of machines in the med wing. You went to wipe the sleep out of your eyes but found that you couldn’t move your right hand. You panicked looking down before realizing that poe was laying on it.
You took in the room, noting that Leia was sat awake on your other side. “General?” You said groggily as you turned to look at her. She looked up from whatever she was reading. “Ahh, Y/n, you’re awake” She said smiling. “What’re you doing in here?” You asked quietly. “It’s nothing bad i was just checking on you and making sure he was talking care of himself, he hasn’t really slept much” She said nodding toward poe. “H-how long have i been in here?” You said looking away from poe and back to the general. “A few days. And before you ask, four is okay, the doctor said she wouldn’t be alive without you” She said squeezing your hand. You breathed out a sigh of relief.
“I’m not in trouble?” You asked quietly. “Why would you be in trouble, you handled that perfectly, get some rest commander, that’s an order” She said smiling at you before leaving you. You laid quietly watching Poe as he stirred by your side. When he squeezed you hand as he sat up you squeezed back. He quickly looked at you and practically jumped on top of you when he realized you were awake. “Hey, I’m okay” You said as he pulled you into a hug. “Your heart…it stopped” He said crying into your neck. “I know, I know but i’m here now” You said holding him as close to you as possible.
“I almost lost you… i wouldn’t know what to do” He said as he kept crying. You pulled him back slightly so you could wipe the tears off his face. “I know, but it’s okay, i’m okay, we’re okay” You said leaning your forehead against his. “Never do that again, please” He said kissing your cheeks and then your forehead and then your lips before pulling away. “I can’t guarantee that but i can definitely try” You said smiling. “Get some rest, please” He said brushing your hair away from your face. “Only if you lay next to me” you said pulling him closer. You both fell asleep tangled together on the small bed.
A/n: So this is entirely my bad anon i didn’t see the “enemies to lovers” i hope you still enjoyed it omg i feel bad 😭
Poe Dameron is a persistent bastard.
Warnings: Poe is bisexual (Taslet is a pilot in Blue Squadron). Themes of slut-shaming. Mentions of one night stands and sex. Worries of unrequited love. Mentions of fears of commitment. Small mention of parent death (both Poe and Reader). Some swearing. Lots of dialogue. Not proofread so there will be mistakes. It didn't go how I planned it, but I hope it's okay anyway! Word count: 3,821 GN!Reader, no use of Y/N.
From this request by anon. I apologise if this isn't what you expected!
Tumblr media
The first time you had seen Poe Dameron was on a recruitment poster for the Resistance.
Your first impression was to scoff and comment on what a pretty boy he was, that the Resistance must really be struggling to get members if they’ve resorted to posters. But wherever you went, you couldn’t seem to escape them, and your eyes always wandered over the serious looking face of Poe Dameron, looking into the distance with those piercing eyes of his.
And the next thing you knew, you were signing up to join and you were shipped off to their base on D’Qar.
Thanks to your father (“You need a true skill to get yourself by.”), you were good with ships; not flying but fixing. You were immediately assigned to the mechanics, and you were soon tossed into the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day life of a Resistance member.
It was hard at first; you felt like you didn’t fit in. You tried to be friendly, really, but you weren’t there to make friends, you were there to win a war. You understand that companionship was one of the most important things in the Resistance (you needed to trust your team, and your team needed to trust you), but to the top dogs of the Resistance, you were just a mere mechanic that was there to fix their ships after a mission.
All of that changed when you actually met Poe.
He’d practically crashed his X-Wing on the tarmac and climbed out without a scratch on him, like it was no big deal. He was even smiling as the other Resistance members rushed over, expecting him to be half dead, and he even had the gall to ask, “Where’s the fire?”
“Your ship,” you’d replied, running over to help put said fire out.
“Ah,” he’d said, shrugging. “It’s just a scratch, it’ll buff right out.”
It did not, in fact, ‘buff right out’, and you knew this personally because you were the one assigned to help fix his ship.
And you say ‘help’, because Poe Dameron is a stubborn bastard, and likes things done his way, so he was constantly over your shoulder as you tried to fix his ship, but you both just ended up compromising, and he joined you. Once he’d cleaned up after his crash landing, you realised that he was as handsome as his posters, but he wasn’t as conceited as you thought he would be. Of course, he knew how good looking he was, but he was at least humble about it.
That’s how your friendship started.
He’d talked to you about your home planet, and he told you about his. You both – oddly – bonded over the deaths of your mothers. Where yours was but a few years ago, long after you were an adult, your heart broke for him when he revealed he was only 8 when his mother passed away. He’d told you that she was one of the reasons he loved flying so much.
Your friendship only grew more as he went out on more missions and requested for you to help fix his ship. Then it turned into inviting you out for drinks with him and his squad, then dinner together after a hard day working, and offers of going off world, to ‘check out that market’ that you’d heard so much about, and as they say; the rest was history.
You weren’t sure when you’d fallen in love with him. It had slowly grown within you, like a flower blooming in the springtime; its roots weaved through your heart, seeking sustenance from every moment that you shared together. At first, it was subtle, like a faint whisper in the wind, barely noticeable, but you knew you felt…something. You put it down to kinship – he was your first friend in the Resistance and had taken you under his wing with no judgement. But you soon realised it was more than that.
You found yourself seeking him out, wanting to spend time with him. His laughter became the melody to which your heart danced, and his smile the sun that warmed your entire being. As days turned into nights and seasons changed, the love you felt for him deepened. Each day brought new discoveries, new reasons to cherish him. Love, it seemed, had quietly taken root and flourished, transforming your world in ways you could have never imagined, never imagined for yourself.
But then…he asked out that new pilot on Blue Squad, Taslet.
Then Tracey from droid repair.
Then that Twi’lek girl from the medbay…her name escapes you.
And you’ve come to realise that Poe Dameron would never settle down. He was too much of a free spirit or something of that kind. It hurt, to know that you would never really be together, but you would rather have him as a friend than nothing at all.
And over your dead body Poe would ever find out about your feelings for him.
You’d been in the Resistance for two years now, and you have only grown closer to Poe, and gained more friendships with his squad. And you love him, you’ve established that, but you’re about to punch your best friend in the face.
“I said no, Poe,” you say to him.
“Come on,” he replied, giving an overexaggerated groan. “You haven’t dated a single person since coming here – “
“It’s almost as if I came here for a different reason other than dating around,” you say, rolling your eyes as you stomp your way into the hangar, where Poe had obviously put some damage to his ship, again, and now you had to fix it.
This time, it was just a paint job.
Poe whines your name. “Come on, let me set you up.”
“I’m not interested, Poe,” you say, giving him a laugh as you reach his X-Wing. “Besides, I don’t even think anyone here is remotely concerned in dating me.”
He pauses for a moment as you climb onto his wing, focusing your attention on the deep scratches that were left there by Maker knows what. You frown at them, knowing that there’s some matching X-Wing paint somewhere on base, when Poe’s next words throw you.
“I might know someone.”
Your eyes meet his, a mixture of disbelief and curiosity on your face. You merely raise an eyebrow at him.
He gives you a dopey smile. “I might be interested.”
“’Might’ be?” you ask him, your eyebrow still raised.
“Okay, I am definitely interested.”
Your eyes widen a little, your body tensing. He said it so casually. How is he not sweating? The thought of you admitting your feelings to him sets you on edge all the time, and you have to go to a quiet place to calm down. Yet here he was, just…just telling you.
“You’re not serious,” you say, giving a nervous laugh. You’re giving him the opportunity to take it back, to say he’s joking.
He’s not. “Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be? You’re good looking, you’re great to talk to, I trust you with my life, and my ship. You’re great with BB, why wouldn’t I want to date you?”
You snort in amusement. “You’re just saying all’a this – “
“No, I want to date you. Let me take you out.”
You look at him in disbelief, that smug grin on his face as he just…stands there, looking at you with his hands on his hips, as if he’d just told you how his day went.
You give a small laugh. “No.”
That wiped the grin off his face.
“Why not?” he asked, his brow furrowing, showing off that cute little crease between his eyebrows that you’d imagined yourself kissing away a million times.
You couldn’t answer that. It’s not because you didn’t know why, it’s because the reason might change your friendship forever. He was just teasing you, trying to make you feel better about ‘not dating anyone’. So you tell him so, that he’s just saying that because he’s just put his foot in it.
Poe shakes his head. “No, no, that’s not true – “
“You’ve literally been with every unavailable person on base, Poe,” you tell him.
“Be reasonable,” Poe said, giving you a look. “It’s not every available person.”
“It’s enough,” you say, giving him a grin. You hop down from his X-Wing, standing in front of him. “I think you’re a great guy, Poe, but you’re just…I wouldn’t date you.”
He looks at you still, with a determined look on his face.
You take his silence as a sign to continue. “I don’t want you to take this the wrong way but…but you…you’re – “
“You can call me a slut, it’s okay,” he says, grinning at you.
You shake your head immediately, reaching to run your hands through your hair in frustration, lightly gripping at your roots. “No, Poe, that’s not what I’m saying – “
“Then just spit it out,” he says, almost laughing in frustration. “It’s me.”
You sigh and drop your arms, before averting your gaze. “You’re not a relationship kind of guy. You date a lot and fuck around a lot, and that’s okay…for you. But that’s not…I don’t want that.”
Poe goes quiet as he studies you. He doesn’t say anything as you finally looked back at him, your cheeks warm and you shift uneasily from one foot to the other under his scrutinising gaze. His eyes, like pools of warm caramel, seem to pierce through you, as though probing into areas of thoughts you've long kept long hidden from him, and the world. A faint flicker of amusement dances at the corners of his lips, hinting at the secrets he might already have unravelled from you, and the look on your face. The silence between you stretches as the weight of his gaze continues to bear down on you.
You find yourself feeling self-conscious, as though you’ve been laid bare before him.
“I can be a ‘relationship kind of guy’,” he says, the corners of his lips twitching again in mirth. “For you.”
“Stop,” you say, shaking your head as you turn away from him, suddenly desperate to find that paint for his X-Wing.
“No, I won’t,” he said, having no problem keeping up with you, even when you sped up. “You won’t date me because…I’ve slept with a few people?”
“I just want something serious, Poe,” you say, sighing as you stop and turn around to look at him. “Like I said, it’s okay that you’re not. You can sleep with whoever you want. We’re in the middle of a war, there’s no room for relationships, right?”
Poe looks at you with an uneasy look on his face. “I’m trying really hard not to be insulted here.”
“No, this isn’t…” you heave a heavy sigh and rub your hands over your face. You feel stressed. This isn’t how you imagined your day going. It was supposed to be a slow day, there were no missions, no supply runs, where you could get on with the small repairs you’d been putting off.
But no. Poe had to try and convince you to go out on a date. With him.
“I’m not bothered that you’ve…that…to put it nicely, that you’ve fucked around, okay?” you ask. “I know you. I know you’re safe and use protection, you’re not an idiot. I get it. Commitment just isn’t your thing.”
You’re met with silence again. He’s just staring at you; the crease in between his eyebrows is back again. You both stand there for so long that you look around nervously, about to tell him that you’re going to find the paint for his X-Wing but he cuts you off before you could get another word in.
“I’m going to change your mind.”
You blink at him, your mouth falling open a bit. You weren’t expecting that.
“It’s nice that you don’t judge me for having sex. And I have had a lot of sex,” said Poe, grinning dopily at you. “But I’m going to prove to you that I can be serious. I can be serious with you.”
You shake your head, knowing that he won’t last as long as he thinks he will, before turning away from him. “We’ll see. Now help me find the paint for your X-Wing.”
Tumblr media
Poe is persistent.
He’d greeted you at your door every day with a cup of caf, a lava roll, and a big smile, BB-8 usually spinning around at his feet, beeping at you happily. You’d walk together to the hangar, where you would share the lava roll.
He’d invite you to have lunch with him, where he’d ask you about your day so far, and you would tell him about the repairs you’d been assigned with that day.
At the end of the day, he’d walk you back to your quarters, where he would ask you out for dinner, as a date.
And you said no. Every time.
He would just grin at you and tell you he’d see you tomorrow.
Where he started the cycle again.
After the third week, you took a seat with Finn and Rey in the cantina for lunch – the first one without Poe since he was with the General for a mission debrief.
“Hi guys,” you greet them, placing your tray of food down as you sit opposite Finn. You tucked in immediately; you were starving.
“How’re you doing?” Rey asked you, a kind smile on her lips.
“Can’t complain,” you reply, shrugging. “You?”
“Not so bad,” she replied.
“You dating Poe yet?” Finn asked you.
You chuckled as you continued to eat your food. “Nope.”
“C’mon, put the guy out of his misery,” Finn said, smirking at you.
“Poe is fine,” you say, shaking your head and rolling your eyes, giving Finn a good-natured grin. “Stay out of it.”
“It’s sad,” teased Finn. “All he does is pout about how you won’t go out with him.”
“He’s doing it to prove a point,” you say. “He’s not serious.”
“Who’s not serious?” a voice asks behind you, and the three of you look up to see Jess and Karé joining you.
Rey told them how you were talking about you not accepting Poe’s offers of a date.
“You’re already dating him,” Jess said causally, taking a seat next to you as Karé sits opposite her and next to Rey.
You snort in amusement. “No, I’m not.”
“Yes, you are,” she said, giving you a pointed look. “He comes to get you every morning and you have lunch every day. That’s dating.”
“No, we did that all the time before,” you say. “We’re friends.”
“But you want more, right?” Karé asks, giving you a pointed look. “Because we’ve all seen how you look at Poe. It’s like he hung the stars.”
Your mouth falls open. “N-no! No, you’re wrong. He’s just…we’re just…”
“I don’t know why you’re so weird about it, he feels the same way,” Karé said, casually eating her food.
Your heart races as at her admission, and your stomach fluttering with nervous anticipation. Your mind reels, grappling with disbelief. You find yourself questioning the authenticity of Karé’s words. She was just saying that. That’s the silliest thing you’ve ever heard. Poe doesn’t like you like that.
Does he?
It's too good to be true, isn't it? You've dreamt about this moment countless times in your time here, but now that it's supposedly happening, scepticism creeps in like a dark shadow, almost like a plague on your self-esteem. You feel all your insecurities come rushing to the surface, because your friends surely are only making you feel better about your unrequited feelings for Poe.
The thought of allowing yourself to believe it feels like stepping onto thin ice, afraid of it cracking beneath your feet. You've built up walls to protect yourself from disappointment, and now someone is asking you to tear them down based on a mere observation, from word of mouth. You don’t believe it.
“No he doesn’t,” you say finally.
“Honey,” Jess says, giving you a grin. “He’s been trying to get you to agree that you’re dating for weeks.”
“We’re not – “
“Stop, please, you’re giving us all a migraine,” Karé said, almost annoyed. “We all know you’re worried about his reputation, but why should it matter? He’s a good guy who enjoys intimacy, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s still the same Poe.”
“I don’t have a problem with it, it’s just…” you go quiet before sighing, then lean in. “What if, after a while, he realises I’m not what he wants? What if I’m too serious for him? Because I don’t date around.”
“You don’t think Poe will want to be in a relationship?” Rey asks, raising an eyebrow at you.
You nod. “I’ve talked about this with Poe, but he’s determined to prove me wrong.”
Your friends look at you silently, before Jess eventually shrugs at you.
“So let him.”
Tumblr media
“Hey,” you call up to Poe, who was messing with the control panel of his X-Wing.
He looks at you at the sound of your voice before giving you a thousand-watt smile. “Hey there.”
“Can we talk? Please?” you ask.
Poe’s brow furrows in confusion but he wastes no time in climbing out of his X-Wing and standing in front of you, his look of confusion slowly melting into one of concern as he asks you what’s happened.
You’d been thinking about Karé’s words all day, and how your other friends hadn’t denied it. In fact, they seemed to agree. And after thinking about it…maybe they were right.
Maybe it's the way Poe smiles when he sees you, or the genuine warmth in his eyes when you talk. Perhaps it's the way he goes out of his way to spend time with you, or the way he laughs at your terrible jokes a little too eagerly. You had always thought he was just being friendly, but he…he didn’t act like that around the other who he’d slept with.
You’d started to entertain the possibility that maybe, just maybe, Karé was right all along. Maybe Poe did like you in the same way as you do with him. And in that moment of acceptance, a surge of exhilaration had coursed through your veins, and you suddenly found yourself in the hangar.
You refuse to let fear or doubt hold you back any longer.
“Okay,” you say, taking a breath as you look at him. “So this…this is going to be long so just…just stay with me please.”
Poe nodded. “Okay.” He places his hands on his hips as he looks at you.
Oh God, why does he always have to look so good. It wasn’t fair that the Maker made this man into a perfect specimen. A caring, wonderful, funny specimen.
“I just want you to know that I love you.”
Poe slowly smiles at you. “I love you too.”
“No, no,” you say, giving him a firm look. “I love you.”
He falters, his smile fading a little as he stared at you.
Your heart stops.
Oh, shit, everyone was wrong.
You start scrambling.
“I’m sorry to throw this on you,” you say quickly, trying to correct your mistake. “It’s just that you’ve been trying to get me to go on a date with you for weeks and I just thought it was for fun, you know? That it was a bit, but then I thought that maybe it wasn’t, that you were serious, that you actually want to take me out on a date – “
He interrupts you by calling your name, but you don’t hear him over your babbling.
“ – and I really want to go out with you, like so much, and I know I was a dumbass and thought that you couldn’t be sincere, since you…well, you know why, and I’m sorry that it came across as me being judgemental, because I was, a little bit – “
He tries to interrupt you again with your name.
“ – but I was an idiot and I’m sorry, I’m sorry for saying you couldn’t be serious enough for a relationship, I’m sorry for stringing you along for the last few weeks, it’s not fair on you, I should be more considerate to your feelings – “
He shouts your name, causing you to jump at the sudden volume. You look at him with wide eyes, breathless after your rant. You both stare at each other for a moment, and you can feel the panic claw at your throat at the unreadable look on his face. You can always know what Poe is feeling, what Poe is thinking, and it’s unnerving to know that you don’t know what’s going to happen.
Eventually, he reaches out to you, and holds you by your upper arms. “What’s brought this one?”
“Karé told me you like me,” you say quickly. “In a like-like way.”
Poe looked at you for a moment before he broke into a grin and started chuckling to himself.
Now you look confused.
“You are a dumbass,” he says, still laughing.
You couldn’t help but laugh with him. “I’m sorry.”
“Stop apologising. Listen,” Poe says, giving a dramatic sigh as his hands slides down your arms and hold your hands. “I’m not going to lie, it did hurt when you said you wouldn’t date me because I’d…slept around. I understand, though, that it can be a little much.”
You bite your lip nervously before looking at the floor, shamefully.
“Hey, no, don’t look away,” said Poe, before grinning when you look back up at him. “I want you to know that you mean the world to me. And more. And I love you too.”
You give him a slow, dopey smile.
“And although you’ve been ‘stringing me along’ for a weeks,” he says, giving you a teasing look, causing you to giggle. He gives your hands a squeeze. “I still love you and want to date you. Now, will you go out on a date with me?”
You grin excitedly before nodding. “Yes, I will go out on a date with you.”
“Finally!” said Poe, grinning at you. “I was starting to lose faith in myself!”
“I just don’t want to miss out having a lava roll first thing, they’re always the first to go,” you say teasingly, pulling him towards you as you wrap your arms around his waist.
He immediately slid his arms around you too.
It felt food. Natural. Like you were meant to be doing this the whole time.
“Oh so you don’t want me to be with you for love, you just want me to bring you lava rolls and caf every morning,” Poe teases back.
You grin and nod. “Mhm.”
“Now I know where I stand.”
“Bet all your other partners will be upset they’ll never get lava rolls and caf.”
“They never got them anyway.”
At times of chaos, a little bit of happiness seems to drive everyone away from their troubles. When there was an announcement of an engagement at the cantina on one particularly glum day, things started to take a turn for the better. There were a lot of tears, all tears of joy as the glimmer of happiness sparked a whole lot of peace in people’s minds.
You grinned at the happy couple, one a member of the red squadron and the other a tech at the operating base, who also happens to be your best friend, Kamira. They looked so elated and their happiness was clearly contagious. You congratulated the couple, kissing your best friend’s forehead and bringing her in for a hug
“Be my maid of honour,” she whispered through her tears and you nod without a second of hesitation.
It took you a while to gather yourself but you were determined to make this the best wedding ever, to make it the best glimmer of hope the resistance has ever seen.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You were now trudging around a busy market place, searching for the final accessories you were adding to Kamira’s bridal headdress, a small  astromech droid rolling at your heels telling you to hurry up.
“Yes, BB, I won’t be long. Go on, go bother your dad.” you said, turning to chastise the irritated droid.
It was then when you realised that the man in question was not behind you. You stopped and looked around, frowning when you couldn’t catch the unruly mop of curls or sharp stunning brown eyes
“Wher- Bebs, where’s your dad?” you knelt down to pat his round head. BB-8 made a sound that sounded something like “ Don’t care, am mad.” and you rolled your eyes at the droid.
“He can be mad all he likes, I’m not buying him new fittings until he learns how to behave himself.” a soothing masculine voice with a hint of authoritativeness cuts through the buzzing sounds of the market making you smile.
You gathered your face into a frown before turning to face him.
“You went into a whole lecture about me running off too far when you can waltz off wherever you want and whenever you want?” you poked the man’s chest as he stared you down with a smirk on his handsome face.
“You hadn’t even noticed how long I’ve been missing.” He raised his eyebrows indignantly at you and you couldn’t help the smile at creeped up onto your face.
“Oh shut up, Poe, here, hold these bags.” you shoved your things into his arms and walked away before he could catch anything else from the expression on your face.
Your friendship with the Black Leader had been a unrequired one. You had been working late one night, deep in focus when an X-Wing swooped into the base and landed slightly clumsily. You squinted into the darkness and quickly ran towards the ship when no one came out of it. You pried the foggy glass covering the cockpit open and you were shocked to find Poe Dameron semi-conscious and on the verge of death.
You had pulled him out with all of your strength, hulling the 80 kg pilot onto one of your trolley’s and pushing him to the med bay, screaming for help. You hadn’t heard from him for about two weeks when suddenly one of your favourite droids, an orange and white astromech, delivered a little message for you from Poe. You both got along amazingly and now here the pilot was, helping you search for wedding preparation things.
You watched as Poe adjusted the large bag of items on his shoulder as he bargained with a seller. You couldn’t deny that he was a beautiful man to look at. His sweet mannerisms and innocent eyes meant that he could easily get his way at times but you allowed it. The setting suns created a beautiful glow that complimented Poe’s tan skin and brown eyes, turning them into caramel orbs that sparkled like gems at a distance. Poe turned to you with a triumphant smile, indicating that he had won the bargain as the shopkeeper mumbled something and stuffed the things into another bag.
“Come on, it's getting late, we should get some rest.” Poe’s voice cuts through your thoughts and the both of you walk towards a nearby inn.
 .・。.・゜✭・.✫・゜・。.
“What do you mean one room?” Poe runs a hand down his face and takes a deep breath.
“We’re all booked up unfortunately,” said the bored receptionist.
“It's alright Poe, we’ll adjust, we’ll take the room sir.” you said, hooking your arm around Poe and grabbing the key that was set out in front of him giving the receptionist a forced smile.
Whatever negatives Poe and you thought about the room had been magnified to tenfold when you unlocked the door. The floor was absolutely filthy and the room was cramped, with a bed that was too big for its space. You turned to Poe who was staring into the room with the same expression you had brewing in your head. You couldn’t help but giggle and pinch his cheek at how blatant his emotions were showing through and he snapped out of it, following you into the room.
BB-8 was camping the night in his little astromech pod on the ship Poe flew you in. That just left you and Poe to find somewhere to crash for the night before heading back to base when the suns arose. You sigh and pull out a few scarfs that you brought with you for comfort, laying it on the bed so that you could have some peace of mind when you sleep. It took you a while to realise that Poe was staring like a lost child.
“You okay?” you turned to Poe, a worried look on your face.
“Uhm, yea sure. I’ll take the floor, you can have the bed.” he mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck bashfully.
“Don’t be stupid, Poe, you can sleep on the bed with me, I’m not going to throw you off the bed in my sleep.” you chuckled.
Truthfully, you were worried about his back. Ever since that accident, he had been complaining about how bad his back would hurt and nothing seemed to solve it. You didn’t want to be the cause of more of his pain, that might essentially take him away from his true love, flying. You gave him a small smile and head to the refresher to freshen up.
A few minutes later, there you were, staring face to face with Poe Dameron, casanova of the resistance. You can’t help but think of the many women and men that this man had bedded and you internally smack yourself for thinking up such vulgarity. You close your eyes and pretend to sleep, eventually lulled to unconsciousness by the soft warmth of Poe’s body heat and his soft breathing.
Poe, on the other hand, was wide awake. His plans of falling asleep in a lone bed were quenched by the bored receptionist and he was now given an opportunity like no other. He knew you were pretending to sleep, so he did too but when your breathing steadied and your eyelids relaxed, Poe laid there and stared at you. He almost never got enough time with you, just to observe you and swim in the feelings that he felt for you. Why would he want to travel to the land of dreams when all he dreamt of was before him?
Now, he pulled himself out of the urge to graze your face with his fingers, to memorise your lips with his. He tucked his hands under the pillow so that they didn’t betray him. Everynight, when he succumbed to the few hours of sleep that he had, he would dream of you. He would see your worried face, the face that you wore when you discovered him at the brink of his death. Your hair was a mess and you had an oil smear on your forehead but Poe thought you were an angel who was going to take him to a better place.
His hands itched to tuck a stray piece of hair that fell on your face as you soundly slept but he reeled himself back again. Suddenly, with a big sniff, you shifted in your sleep and one of your hands landed directly in front of Poe’s nose. He slowly took in a breath and smelled your soft soap and it was then when all of his urges took over him. Slowly, he extracted one of his hands from under the pillow and traced your hand softly, every line etched painstakingly into his brain as his fingers skimmed them, willing himself to remember every single detail.
You didn’t rouse from your deep sleep although a small smile graced your face as your pinky twitches gently. Poe sighed, slowly letting his heart leave its cavity and fill the lines on your hands. He hooked his pinky around yours gently and waited with bated breath to see whether you would be jolted awake. Your pinky stopped twitching but your breathing stayed the same and Poe continued to stare at you until his eyes betrayed him, sleep consuming him like a hungry curse.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You awoke to something warm under your face. It was so soft and smelled like clean skin with a hint of motor oil and leather, giving you a sense of comfort like no other. You nuzzled your nose into the warmth and slowly opened your eyes. All you saw was an arm extending from whatever was under your face and memories of last night flooded back to you. You didn’t move but your eyes met with the sleeping Poe, who was snoring softly, a respectful distance between the two of you, minus the hand that was softly tucked under your cheek.
The rebellious commander looked ethereal in the morning sun, his curls everywhere, his eyebrows and lips set in a neutral position, giving him an angelic resting face. You resisted the urge to close the gap and feel his soft pouty lips on yours. Your heart pounded as you took the chance you had and softly brushed his curls that were at his forehead. The second your hand came in contact with his forehead, a jolt of electricity ran up your spine, and you had to literally pull yourself together and not throw yourself over the sleeping Poe.
His eyebrows twitched and you resumed your original position, closing your eyes. He slowly woke up and his hand that was under your face gently cupped it as a soft sigh emitted from him, twisting at your insides. Your heart was pounding under your chest and you felt the bed dip slightly as Poe slid out of it and pulled his hand with him.
You only opened your eyes as you heard the door to the refresher close. You silently flung yourself out of bed and did your happy dance as all the receptors of your brain fired at once, your heart pumping adrenaline throughout your body making you feel like a mad woman. The sound of water hitting the floor stopped and you bit your lip, sliding back into bed and pretending you just had woken up when Poe opened the door again.
“We’ll leave for the base after we get some breakfast.” Poe said smiling at you and you nod with a knowing smile, a smile that could only be fueled by the sweet feeling that your commander has fallen for you.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You were running now, fabric billowing around you as you ran through the halls, in search of that one door. You found it, keying in the password and letting the door swoosh open before storming inside. Poe turned to look at you, adjusting the buttons to his uniform with a small frown on his face, but the second he properly took a look at you his mouth dropped into a soft smile.
“How’s it going, Commander?” you giggle, realising that he had put all his buttons wrongly, setting a small jar aside and reaching for him.
“I look ridiculous.” he mumbled and you laughed, patting his lapel down and pulling him towards his table.
“You look powerful, trust me.” you say, perching on his table and pushing his shoulders down so that he is seated at the chair.
You reached out for the jar of mousse and lifted his head up by his chin, so that he was at eye level with you. Without a single word, you started to adjust his curls, twisting each piece so that they fall beautifully. Poe was looking at you with his huge tempting eyes, and you looked past them, not wanting to be distracted. Once you were satisfied with his hair, you grabbed some powder and dabbed it lightly on his face.
“Ready for your big speech?” you murmured, smoothing down his eyebrows with your fingers and letting your hands trail over the sides of his face, examining him.
He shrugged, making you nod with a grin, knowing that Poe was more of the pep talk kinda person, preferring to steer clear from large structured speeches. You placed a hand on his chest and slowly pushed him against the chair as your eyes finally met his. They were slightly hooded and he gave you all of his attention, tuning his entire body towards you. You held eye contact, determined not to falter as you started unbuttoning his uniform. You tugged it and righted his buttons, your fingers working slowly and carefully on the intricately ordained uniform. Once you were done, you turned and picked up the mirror behind you, holding it in front of Poe.
“See you look cute” you smile from behind the mirror.
Poe’s hand came to rest atop of the mirror, slowly pushing it down to reveal your face. His eyes were glittering under the dim lights of his room and he was gazing at you with a new look on his face, one of wonder and amazement. You’d recognize the look on his face, the same face he used when he would blow up a TIE in the sky, his face ablaze in the monitor and a maddening expression that made him look like a scientist who had discovered all he wanted to know.
“Yea, beautiful.” he whispered softly as his eyes grazed your face.
He reached his hand out and cupped your cheek, calloused thumb tracing your jawline, making your eyes flutter close and heart quicken instantly.
“Poe…” you breathed, trying to keep your eyes on him.
“So beautiful…” he was getting closer now and you could see the light dusting of pink across his nose.
You held onto the mirror between the two of you like it was your lifeline fingers digging into its hard ridges as Poe’s nose brushed against yours softly. Suddenly a loud beep launched the both of you apart and Poe stood up from his place, turning just in time for the door to whoosh open again.
“Found your data pa- Why are you both looking at me like that?” Finn says, holding up Poe’s data pad.
You adjusted your expression casually at Finn’s raised eyebrow as Poe coughed and straightened his uniform.
“Knock next time, damn.” you heard Poe murmur and you purse your lips, keeping in a laugh.
“Time for the-”
“Right, rehearsal.” Poe said shortly, exiting the room and Finn shot you a look of surprise and followed him a second later, leaving you stunned with your own thoughts.
 .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
Poe watched you throughout the ceremony, unable to think of anything else as he watched the way you smiled lovingly at your best friend. Poe found himself replacing the bride and groom with himself and you, his hand coming up to fiddle with his mother’s ring on the necklace around his neck. You would make the most radiant bride, your smile itself would be the highlight of Poe’s day and to be the reason for that smile would be his greatest blessing.
He got through his speech just fine, his eyes searching for everyone except you, worrying that he would stumble along the way if he looked at you. After the ceremony, he looked around for you, his mind racing at the events of the morning and wondering how it would feel to speak to you again. You weren’t anywhere near the party, and Poe had a good idea where you would be. He ran, the resistance of the wind messing up his curls again and his boots thudding against the floor.
He stopped when he caught the sight of you, your cape billowing in the wind as you looked over the balcony at the scenery before you. You looked no short of a queen, your posture regal and your head held high. Poe was mesmerised, even more than he ever was when he had the chance to feel your lips against his moments before. He should have said something to you before he left for rehearsal, his heart now punishing him as he stared at you.
“I know you’re behind me, Poe, I could hear your boots from a mile away.” you said humorlessly without turning around, your voice soft as it carried away in the winds.
Poe approached you slowly, twisting his fingers slightly and taking his place beside you.
“Why?” Poe knew what you were asking and he quite frankly didn’t need you to say more.
“You saved my life, so it's undoubtedly yours.” He said softly but firmly and you turned to look at him with a shocked expression, your eyes wide, not expecting him to say what he just had said.
“Oh Poe,” you breathed, grabbing his hand and tugging him close, claiming his lips with yours as you cupped his face with your free hand.
His arms snaked around your waist as he pulled you closer, deepening the kiss, sighing as his heart gave way completely. He pulled away, but one look at the way your face was flushed made him pull you back for another kiss, one that blazed something so violently inside of him that he found it hard to pull back. Eventually, he rested his forehead against yours as you held onto him, the both of you breathing in each other’s air as your hand rested against his chest, over his heart.
“I-” you tried to say but Poe softly clamped his hand over your mouth and brought your head down to his shoulder, hugging you tightly.
In that embrace you felt it, that glimmer of hope, the best one you had ever seen in your time with the resistance.
Collateral Damage
Poe Dameron x G!N reader
Rating : M
Wordcount : 6800 (ish)
Warnings : Friends to lovers, sort of slow burn I suppose, angst, fluff, reader has a fear of flying, arguing, vague illusions to Poe's torture by the FO, vague mention of parental death (Poe's mom), mentions of panic attacks.
Summary : Poe finds out you are scared to fly, and makes it a personal challenge to fix that. Only spending so much time together, causes some complications.
A/N : there's a few bits here that mention Poe's past as a child which is from Freefall however there are no direct Freefall spoilers contained, and it isn't necessary to have read it to enjoy this.
To the anon that requested an angst to fluff Poe fic...I hope you enjoy!
~
"Poe, please don't look at me like that!" You beg.
"Like what?" Poe gives you a genuinely confused look, as though he hasn't been staring at you for the past ten minutes like you're a particularly complex puzzle he needs to work out.
"Like there's something wrong with me," you sigh, twisting the mug of tea nervously in your hands.
"I never said that! But seriously? You're scared? Of flying? This is a joke right?"
"I just think if we were made to fly we'd have wings is all." You shrug, trying to be nonchalant as you sip your drink, your fingers pressing hard into the china as you try to ignore his shock. You don't look up but you can feel his eyes burning into you.
"How did I not know this? How have you hidden it from me of all people! I'm equally impressed and offended." You suspect by his tone he's more offended than impressed, but it was never truly your intention to hide it from him. The secret just sort of… happened.
When you were children you barely knew Poe, not until after he returned to Yavin, his eyes a little darker than they had been before, his steps a little more calculated, though no less bold. When you started helping Kes out around the little farm he bought, you had gotten to know Poe a lot better. Barely tolerating him at first, before you fell into an close friendship. It had been easy enough to deny his requests to go flying with him in the early days, especially given the amount of trouble he got into.
Then when you were older Poe seemed to flit in and out of your life. Between the academy, the navy, and now the resistance, sometimes it seemed like he was never around.
But he always reappeared eventually. He came back to Yavin sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks. He used your back garden like his personal shipping yard, but you never had the heart to tell him off about it, despite the fact you had smashed more than your fair share of crockery in shock at the sudden noise of a roaring engine coming down on your house.
Everytime he asked if you wanted to go flying you found some excuse not to, sometimes elaborate ones you aren't even sure Poe believed. You assume perhaps he thought you were avoiding spending time alone with him, which was in part true some of the time.
You could have told him the truth, but the way he lit up when he talked about flying — the freedom of it, the adventure of it — had always made the words dry in your mouth. He couldn't possibly understand, and you knew he would react, well, exactly as he had.
"I didn't! You never asked, and it never came up in conversation. It shouldn't have tonight. It's irrelevant. I don't need to fly," you shrug stubbornly, wanting to get away from the topic if only to stop the quizzical gaze he's fixed you with since it came up.
"But-but there's a whole galaxy you're missing out on!" He splutters, still wide eyed with shock. "You can't tell me you want to spend the rest of your life on Yavin."
"I like Yavin!"
Poe gives a huff of disbelief at you, folding his arms.
"Liar."
"You know Poe, not all of us have the need to fly out into the night and get blown to pieces like you," you sigh, rubbing a hand over your eyes, frustrated at his reaction. "Anyways it's late. I should go."
Getting up you put your mug in the sink and grab your jacket, intent on leaving and finding some way to avoid this topic for the next however many years, probably forever.
"Hey, hey, don't go. I'm sorry, okay?" Poe begs getting up and taking a gentle grip of your arm to prevent you moving. You ignore the fire that ignites your skin where his fingers are wrapped loosely around your arm.
"Tell me what scares you? About flying I mean? Let me try and understand," he pleads.
Taking a breath you sigh. How could you explain it to someone who spent their whole life up there? How could you explain it to someone who lived and breathed the freedom of the flight?
"Pilots die, all the time. Things go wrong, fights, pirates, technical failures…" you trail off with a wave of your hand, freeing your arm from his gentle grip, not used to his touch. "I just…can't stand the thought of dying alone out there in the cold. It's hard enough worrying about that happening to you."
"You sound like my dad," Poe sighs quietly. "He didn't want me flying either. Not after my mom."
Reaching back out you squeeze his hand briefly, knowing that while the relationship between Poe and Kes had somewhat mended over the years, some cracks ran too deep to ever be fully healed.
"You know, Kes never shuts up about you flying. Always talking about what a good pilot you are and how your mom would be so proud of you, how you fly just like her. I swear it's all I heard for weeks the last time you were here."
Poe falls quiet for a long moment, deep in thought, a frown etched deep into his brow.
"He's proud of you, Poe. I know he struggles to say it sometimes, but he is," you offer gently.
Poe waves a hand nonchalantly, as though it doesn't bother him, but you know it does.
"Well you know my dad likes to keep things to himself, but apparently not from you," he eyes you somewhat suspiciously. "He likes you, you know. He told me once I should marry you. Imagine that, us, married."
He lets out a snort of a laugh as he shakes his head at the thought. You want to make a joke about it, you want to laugh it off and tell him you'd never agree to it even if he asked, but the spark of feelings you've so carefully navigated all these years flared to life suddenly and in full force at his words.
There's always been something between you, something a little more than friendship, something you both know can't be. Something both of you have avoided talking about for a long time now.
Perhaps when you were younger maybe you could have figured something out, but Poe was hardly ever around and now, well now your worlds were too far apart. Yours here on the ground, his far off in the stars. It was better not to prod too hard at open wounds, but Poe's laughter at the thought of you together, still cuts deeply.
Something must flicker across your expression because his amusement dies and Poe gives you a half smile.
"It's just, you know, you're seeing someone. Aren't you?"
"It didn't work out." You shrug as though you don't care. The truth was it never worked out, because you would always be in love with someone else. How were you supposed to give your heart away when at any given moment the one that makes it beat could drop from the sky without warning?
"Oh," he sounds genuinely sad which only drives the knife further in. You drop your eyes from his, pulling at a loose thread on your jacket as he continues. "I'm sorry. You'll meet someone else though! Although maybe…. Off this planet?"
You sigh and roll your eyes. Really you shouldn't be surprised that he found a way to spin the topic right back to your issues with flying, which you suppose was better than your love life so at least there was that.
"Oh come on. You can't be scared if you haven't tried it! Lemmie take you!" Poe sounds like an excited child on life day. Clearly the thought of conquering your fear appealed to him.
"Absolutely not! I've seen the way you fly!"
"Did you not just say even my dad thinks I'm good at flying? And besides," he leans on the counter, a shit eating grin plastering his face, "didn't you hear I'm the best pilot in the resistance?"
You roll your eyes at his cocky statement.
"Poe, I've heard a great deal of things about you over the years, not all of them I can believe and most of them I've had to defend your good name against!"
He raises an eyebrow and tilts his head like a curious loth cat.
"Like what?"
You quickly go through the ment rollerdex of things you've heard, deciding to pick out your favourite.
"Like… the time you apparently almost married a Hutt."
Poe opens his mouth and then closes it again, suddenly becoming very interested in a tin of tea on the side. He picks it up, rolling it between his palms, purposely not looking at you.
"Well, really that wasn't even my fault," he mumbles eventually, realising you aren't going to fill the expectant silence.
He can't seriously have done that? The ridiculous story can't possibly be the truth?
"You have to be kidding me! I got into the biggest argument that you wouldn't be so stupid to get into something with them. Do I even want to know the real story?"
You had vehemently defended your friend, arguing well into the night that while yes, Poe was reckless, and yes sometimes he spoke without thinking, and yes sometimes trouble found him, you were still absolutely sure the story was completely untrue. You suppose you have a few apologies to make now.
"It's not like I intended to agree to the marriage! It just sort of… happened."
You stare at him, open mouthed waiting for the rest of the story, knowing he won't be able to resist defending himself. But instead of launching into a lengthy explanation he grins, setting the tea down slowly and fixing you with an expression you are all too familiar with. The one he uses when he knows he's about to get something he wants.
"Trade. I'll fly you somewhere. Then I'll tell you."
And there it was. He knew you wanted to know the truth, unable to resist a good story about the far off places he visited and troubles he got into. You should have predicted the bastard would use that against you.
You fold your arms.
"No."
"I'll just fly you to the other side of Yavin? Short trip, in and out."
"No!"
Poe sighs dramatically, pushing himself up off the counter.
"Fine. You drive a hard bargain. I'll tell you the whole story if you let me show you around my ship and tell you how unscary it is to fly. Strictly no piloting."
"Please agree so you can both shut up. It's after midnight, and the noise you two make will bring the first order down on our heads without them even looking!" Kes Dameron booms from the hallway, making both of you jump.
"Sorry dad!" Poe yells while he gives you a grin of victory.
"Sorry Kes! I'm leaving now." With a sigh of resignation you slip on your jacket. "Fine. No flying."
"No flying," Poe agrees with a nod, holding out his hand and wriggling his fingers invitingly. You hesitate to take it, but he slides his hand into yours anyway, squeezing your fingers. "I'll walk you home."
You try not to think about how right it feels to have your hand in his.
~
"Poe, Poe," you repeat a little louder as he continues rambling away, pointing to the different parts of his X-Wing, a misty look in his eyes. You're sure you lost him a good while ago, and he hasn't stopped talking long enough for you to explain you have no idea what he's talking about.
"You have to put your hand up to ask a question when I'm teaching," he chides you teasingly. Rolling your eyes you put your hand up, glaring at him when he grins silently at you for a long drawn out moment. Just as your patience breaks, opening your mouth to ask anyway, he cuts in first.
"You have a question?"
"Several," you respond dryly. "Firstly, can you please slow down? I've no idea what you've been talking about for the last twenty minutes. Secondly, I'm pretty sure you've told me about everything that can go wrong and now I want to be near this thing even less. Thirdly -"
"This thing? This thing?" He interupts, his eyes going wide with shock. "This thing is a T-70 X-wing. I've done a lot of work on this thing!"
"I apologise I insulted your ship," you laugh, watching his brows pull together in an annoyed frown. Maker, Flyboys! As cute as he was you couldn't really expect any other reaction.
"Don't apologise to me. Apologise to her!" He points at his ship before he folds his arms stubbornly, as though he's actually serious. You pause for a moment, realising he is serious.
"Thirdly, I don't think this is helping and I'm sure you have better things to be doing," You continue, ignoring his sulk. Poe drops his arms, his expression softening.
"It is helping," he insists. "If you know what can go wrong then you know how to fix it, or how to account for it at the least. Then that part isn't so scary anymore. I promise."
"It doesn't feel like it's helping," you mumble, wrapping your arms around your chest, the low hum of anxiety vibrating under your ribs. "I'm sorry. I'm not being ungrateful. It's very nice of you to do this."
"You don't think I can do it," he grins and you roll your eyes at him for what feels like the thousandth time since he's been back.
"I'm not a challenge," you remind him with a glare.
"You kinda are though," he grins. Trust Poe to see this as some sort of game he can win. "Come on. You can trust me. I know about these things. How'd you think I survived this long?"
"Sheer dumb luck?"
Poe laughs, a deep elated noise that brings a smile to your lips and makes your heart ache with affection. It seems so rare these days that he truly laughs like that, and when he does, here with you, it only makes his inevitable absence harder to swallow.
"Probably a bit of that too," he admits with a shrug. "Okay, new plan."
He plonks himself down on the ground, patting the space in front of him for you. When you're settled opposite him he takes both your hands in his. When you try to pull away, the touch giving a jolt in your chest, he grips your fingers tighter, forcing you to stay with him. It's an all too familiar dance now. You push him away, and he only proceeds to try and hold you closer. When he's here you wish he wouldn't, but when he's gone, you ache for his easy familiarity.
He gives you a genuine open look, and your heart aches a little that he's truly trying to help when you feel so beyond helping.
"What do you think about when you get scared? When you think about being up there. What is it that worries you so much?"
"I guess dying alone?" You suppress a shudder at the thought of floating out there in the darkness, no one to hear you scream for help.
The pilot doesn't even miss a beat before he answers quickly.
"Okay, I'd be with you so that's not a problem. We would die together."
You glare at him, unamused. Ignoring your vehement stare he gestures for you to continue.
"Fine. Being shot out of the sky. Lot of time to think about dying while you're plummeting to the ground."
He gives you a grin, "We both know that's not an issue because I'm a great pilot, so no matter where we are I promise you I'll land safely, all parts intact, especially all the bits I like," he winks and you desperately try to ignore the flare of heat on your skin. "I've done it so many times I could do it in my sleep! Next problem."
"Kidnapped by pirates." You shoot quickly.
"They'll give you back after half an hour." Poe snorts with laughter when you reach out and slap his arm hard.
"Asshole," you grumble, fighting back a smile.
He grins at you, clearly enjoying himself at your expense and while you should mind his teasing, you find it hard to care, not when his eyes are lit up with genuine joy.
"You are really not helping," you laugh eventually, shaking your head. "I'm a lost cause."
"Not entirely, just mostly. I mean none of these are good reasons to be scared," Poe smiles and you have to admit it chafes you a little that he still doesn't seem to understand.
"I never said my fear was rational."
"It's not entirely irrational either," Poe acknowledges with a shrug, finally allowing you to pull your hands out of his while he taps his chin in thought. You curl your fingers into your palms, willing away the memory of his touch.
"What you need is a distraction!" Poe proclaims brightly. For a shocked moment you think he's talking about a distraction from him, which is entirely exactly what you need. But he keeps talking and you realise it's nothing like that, although he inadvertently makes you distracted anyway, from flying at least.
"Yeah, something to take your mind off getting up there."
You shake your head, knowing it won't work. Suddenly this whole thing seems like a bad idea. Poe wasn't one to give up, and yet over the years you've tried just about everything to get over your fear. A weariness starts to creep in, encouraging you to make your excuses and leave.
"I doubt anything would distract me that much. Anyway, I think we should do something else. Flying isn't that important." You try, knowing it's hopeless now you've encouraged him this much.
"What if I flew naked?" He grins, wiggling his eyebrows. His constant blatant flirting is starting to take a toll, and you can't muster even a smile this time. He knows, yet he does it anyway. It's infuriating sometimes, purposely poking and prodding when you're just trying to get by without spilling your heart all over the grass.
"Coming from the person who laughed at the notion of us being married, I don't see how you think I'd care about that." You don't quite mean to bite it out the way you do, but Poe ignores your attitude and leans back on his arms, gazing at you.
"Yeah, because we'd argue all day long about everything. I'd be messy, and you'd want a tidy house, we would fight over what to have for dinner, because you won't believe I'm the better cook, I'd want to paint the walls blue, but you'd want green. You'd want to live here and I wouldn't." He waves his hand, indicating that there would be a longer list of issues if he continued. "The thought of us being married is funny because it would be chaotic, not because I don't love you."
The words hit you like a shot, and judging by the look of fear on the pilot's face he probably hadn't thought them through before they left his mouth.
"Guess the cats out of the bag now. Well, suppose it was never really fully in the bag anyway," he mumbles, running a hand through his messy curls, before he stares up at the sky. "I mean, I know we've never….I know we've never gone down that road, but you know I've always had a soft spot for you."
You knew. Of course you knew. You both held an affection for each other, but you also know it wasn't meant to be. Maker knows you've spent your life trying to get over him, and Poe… well he never breathed a word about his feelings in the matter. You assumed he had moved on some time ago. If his list of conquests was anywhere half true, he moved on quite well.
You avoid his gaze, looking down at the dirt. "Love is a lot different than a soft spot. Seems funny you never mentioned that before."
Poe swallows, sitting back up properly and reaching to take your hands, you snatch them back before he has a chance, a swell of anger starting in your chest. There is no need for him to tell you this. You don't want him to tell you this. It won't make any difference to say it out loud.
"I knew I couldn't stay so what was the point? You've said yourself how much you love Yavin. Who was I to ask you to give it all up? You deserve someone who could be there for you, where you wanted to be. You still deserve someone like that."
"So why bring it up when you know it isn't you?" You snap angrily, getting to your feet, panic pulsing through your veins. While you've had this conversation a hundred times in your head, in reality you have no idea how to react. Suddenly the open wound becomes a sinkhole, and every wall you've placed around your feelings starts to crumble in. Your chest constricts with panic. He can't do this now. Not after all this time. You won't be able to rebuild what he's torn down. This will burn your friendship to the ground.
"Because I'm selfish," the pilot admits, jumping up and following you as you storm across the garden towards the house, the flaring pain in your chest getting worse with each word that leaves his mouth. You won't talk about this. You can't talk about this.
"Yes, you are! You blaze in and out of my life and everytime I think I might have a chance to mend myself, you come tearing down from the sky. Maybe it is about time to actually have this conversation so we can both move on!" You spin on your heel to face him, stepping back when he reaches for you again.
If he touches you now you won't ever be able to let him go, he'll find a way to calm you down and you don't want to be calm. You want to be angry. You want to yell, scream, and let out every feeling you've kept locked inside. You want him to feel even a small spark of what he's done to you for years. You need to be angry.
"Why can't we just be together now?" He interrupts your rant.
"What's the point, Poe? You know I won't leave, I can't leave. And you can't stay. It won't work and we both know it."
"We don't know that because we haven't tried!" He implores passionately. "You can come with me! The resistance would be lucky to have you. If you just try! If you just let me show you. I promise it's not so scary, and then we can go anywhere we like!"
"I can't do it, Poe. I just can't and there's no point trying to make you of all people understand that."
You turn to leave but this time he's quicker than you, reaching out and catching hold of your wrist.
"So this is how it ends is it? We dance around this for years and then we just do what? Give up?" The pain lacing his voice is enough to make your lip tremble as you bite back the tears.
"You're right. We've danced around this for years because we both know it isn't going to work! Why now? Why after all this time decide to drag all this up now?"
"Because we are in the middle of a war. Because I don't know what's going to happen to me tomorrow, or the next day, or the next. Because I might not be here to tell you this, and for some reason it kills me that I might be gone and you would never know that I loved you. I've waited years for you to find someone who makes you happy, someone who gives you everything I can't, but everytime I come here I know it hurts you because it hasn't happened. And I need you to know that someone, that I, love you. I don't think I can just walk away this time." He sounds resigned and it crumbles away every last brick you had to protect yourself. Poe doesn't think he's going to survive this war. In the end, he knows he's going to leave you anyway.
It makes you angry to hear him talk that way. Poe was the upbeat one. Poe was the one who always figured a way out. He doesn’t just accept the inevitable. And you don't need him concerned about you either.
"Well you should just walk away, because I don't need your pity!" You yell, feeling the hot tears escaping your eyes.
"That's not what it is!" Poe takes a breath, clearly trying to calm himself and de-escalate the situation. "I'm just trying to be honest with you for once. I can't just leave and say nothing this time."
"You mean like you have every time you disappear into the sky for months on end?" You laugh bitterly.
The pilot swallows, his eyes searching yours, pleadingly, begging you to understand why now, but the anger still swells in your chest.
"I've always come back to you. Every time I can. For Makers sake do you think I'd be here so often if you weren't?"
When you say nothing Poe frowns, reading your expression all too clearly.
"You won't even consider coming with me? You won't even try?"
You wrap your arms around your waist, holding yourself together as you shake your head.
"I can't. We can't and you know it. I…can't leave. I can't leave," you repeat in a whisper, shaking your head, the tears flowing fast down your cheeks.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry," Poe apologies softly, reaching out to take your arms, drawing you close to him. You try to fight it, pulling your body away, but Poe ignores you, holding you tight against him until you stop fighting, allowing him to hug you tightly.
"I know you can't leave," he admits, letting you go to cup your cheek, his palm warm against your cooled skin, his thumb sweeping away tears. "You don't have to, okay? Just say the word. Say the word and I'll be here, with you. I'll stay right here so we can try. Tell me that's what you want. Tell me you feel the same and I'll do it."
You know what he's offering, and you know he can't fulfil it. He's speaking without thinking it through, in desperation, trying to fix things, to fix the damage his words have done.
You wish you could accept it, but the thought of Poe grounded, here, a place he fought so hard to escape, causes an ache in your chest. You know it can't be that way.
Maybe he would give it all up for you, but it would never be enough. Not for him. Eventually the cracks would form, and he'd be gone, and leave you so much more broken than you already were.
"Tell me you feel the same," he whispers, leaning into you.
"Don't do this," you beg softly, bring your hands up to rest on his arms to push him away. You can't seem to make your body follow through with the action.
"Then stop me," Poe challenges, his hand sliding around the back of your neck. He's so close you can feel his breath against your lips, the warmth of his body against yours.
Maker, he was going to break your heart. He won't stay, he can't stay. You won't make him do that, not for you. But you're sick of fighting it, sick of trying to pretend. He's here, with you, wanting you. Just this once, once can't hurt.
The screeching beep of his comms stops you both, the sudden insistent noise cutting through the tension and your own clouded thoughts, making you step away from him quickly. Poe lets you go, his expression pained, though he doesn't move to answer the incoming call.
Swallowing hard you gesture to his pocket, refusing to meet his gaze, fearful of what you might find there.
"You should get that."
"Yeah," he nods distractedly, taking a breath and fishing the comm out. He holds it in his hands, glaring at it before his gaze flickers back to you. "Can we talk later?"
You hesitate initially but then nod. Later gave you time to think, to process everything, to try to explain to him why this can't be. Maybe you can salvage your friendship after some time apart.
A tiny voice in your head whispers the vicious truth. It was too late for that.
It's less than an hour before he leaves again, back on urgent business for the resistance. You hadn't opened the door when he came to say goodbye. You hadn't answered when he asked if you wanted him to stay, and you hadn't the strength to smile and see him off this time. He left you with the memory of his muffled voice, promising he will come back, promising he'll figure out a way to make this work, begging you to think, to try.
For once you're grateful he's gone. At least he isn't around to see the damage.
~
The tea Kes Dameron had pressed into your hands has long since gone cold as you stare out at the grass, little shoots growing where previously a star fighter engine had burnt them away, one that so far hadn't returned, and perhaps never would.
There's a sigh behind you, a creak of the porch steps as Kes sits down next to you. The older man had come to help you fix the flickering light in the kitchen, something you'd have once asked Poe how to fix, allowing him to instruct you via comlink, teasing and laughing at your questions and frustrations. But you hadn't spoken to Poe, not in months now, too ashamed and regretful of your behaviour, and too fearful of what speaking with him may bring up.
"He was asking about you again earlier. You can't keep avoiding his comms."
You can feel Kes's eyes on you but you refuse to look up from the dent in the grass. You don't need to ask who he means.
"I'm not. Poe calls at bad times."
Kes makes a disbelieving noise, taking the now cold mug out of your hands and setting it down to the side, making you finally look up.
"It's been a bad time for the past two months. What happened between you?" He frowns at you.
"Nothing." It was the truth. In the end nothing had happened, not really. But the almost of it, the almost hurt worse.
You don't want to talk about Poe. You don't want to think about it. But the next question slips out without you being able to stop it.
"How is he?"
Kes lets out a long breath.
"You know Poe, all smiles and reassurances but he hasn't been the same. Not since…" Kes trails off and your stomach gives a now familiar lurch at the memory of Kes turning up at your door, pale and scared, stuttering out that the First Order had captured his son. As far as you know Poe never told Kes what happened in those days he was gone, but if the stories you heard were even half true, you're surprised he made it out alive.
"He needs someone there," Kes continues eventually.
"He has his squadron." You ignore what Kes is implying. It's a conversation you've had a hundred times over now. It makes your chest ache in a now all too familiar way.
"He needs you, and for all your denial you need him. You can't spend your whole life moping around here. I can make the arrangements to get you there. You just have to say the word."
You had tried in the weeks following his departure to do as he asked, to fly. You had walked to the shipping yard every day, listened to the roar of the engines, talked to the pilots, tried with every fibre to set foot on a ship, any ship, but you couldn't do it.
You had come to accept that you were right to distance yourself. There was no way for you to be together.
"Kes, I can't do that. I… me and Poe… we just aren't… our lives don't fit together." The shame burns in your chest that you couldn't be there for him when he needed someone the most, after his escape from the First Order.
Kes scoffs in an all too familiar way. You wonder if Poe knows where he got that reaction from, if he knows how much like his father he can be.
"Don't fit together? You kids," Kes rolls his eyes. "Nothing in this life is ever easy. If you want something enough you'll find a way through it. Poe's mother," he hesitates, the words catching in his throat. It's rare for Kes to mention Shara, but when he does, it always seems it causes him physical pain. The older man swallows hard before he continues, looking up at the sky.
"She was a free spirit like Poe. But she loved with her whole heart, and so does he. He'd give up the world for you. Don't let your fear hold you back. Don't make the same mistake with him that I did. If you do, you may lose him forever."
Kes was right in a way, your fear was holding you back, it always had. You'd always known Poe's heart was in the stars, and your fear would never let you leave the ground. But Poe had offered to give his world up for you — his stars, his resistance, his freedom. Even if he couldn't stick to it, he was willing to try.
Maybe you could try again. For him.
~
Poe is still in his flight suit, his hair damp and messy, helmet clutched in one hand, talking animatedly with another pilot who you vaguely recognise, who apparently knows you straight away. The pilot nudges Poe — who continues to chatter away obviously— before forcefully spinning him around to point at you.
You can tell you are probably the very last person he's expecting. His eyes go wide and he blinks a few times, as though he's imagining you here. He opens and closes his mouth but whatever words he wanted to get out, don't seem to come, or at least you can't hear them across the yard.
You hadn't told him you were coming. In fact, you still hadn't answered a single one of his comms. It's not that you hadn't wanted to talk to him, but more that you hadn't wanted to disappoint him if, in the end, you couldn't go through with it. Getting here had taken weeks, the trip was rearranged three times after you found yourself unable to get on the ship, and in the end Kes had dragged you in himself and tied you into your seat, reasoning that you needed a push. He was probably right, but you would still be having words when you saw him again.
Raising a hand to Poe you give him a small wave, glad that you landed a good few hours before he returned from whatever mission run he was on this time. It had given you time to clean up and compose yourself, for the shaking to finally stop.
You hesitate in the landing bay, unsure if you should go over or stay put. Poe decides for you because the moment you move a foot forward, he runs to you, skidding to a stop almost toe to toe with you.
"Here-you-h-how?" He stutters out looking you over, as though you might have been kidnapped and dragged here against your will. "Is everything okay? What's happened? My dad-"
"Is fine," you cut him off, recognising his rising panic. "Everything's okay at home. I just thought it was about time I came to see you for once." You give him a nonchalant wave of your hand and a shrug, although your stomach feels full of stones as you take in the new scar across his cheek.
"But… you wouldn't even fly with me!" He sputters out, as though that's the most important point.
You give him an apologetic smile.
"Your dad made me realise I needed to be here," you confess, "We heard about what happened. Your dad was worried about you and how…" you were coping after being tortured.
You don't finish the sentence, swallowing hard.
"I was worried about you." You drop your eyes, instead gazing down at his scuffed boots, still feeling ashamed you hadn't been here sooner.
The pilot sighs, "I'd have come to you if you'd just answered my calls. I just thought you didn't want to see me, and then things here got… a bit crazy."
"I know, but the way we left things. I didn't know…I couldn't…I'm sorry. I tried to come, I really did. I couldn't and… I couldn't tell you…I panicked and everything that happened, and what we said, and what I did, and I wanted to be here for you when you were… but I couldn't. I tried but i couldn't do it, and then -"
"Stop, stop, stop," Poe shushes you, pulling you into his arms and holding you against him tightly, while you try to ramble out an explanation, an apology, and confession all in one, the words tumbling together, desperate to escape.
"Shhh stop," he repeats softly, squeezing you against his chest.
It's more than just a friendly hug, it's more than just a greeting. He holds you tighter than he ever has, one hand curled into the back of your shirt while the other grips his helmet, his face buried in your neck, as though he could hide from the world. Your heart aches for him and everything he's been through as you hold him.
You wait for him to ask you questions, to call you out on how you acted, even to tease you for the whole situation.
Instead, "I'm so proud of you," is all he says.
You bite your lip hard to hold back a flow of tears, gripping his flight suit as he squeezes you breathless.
"I can't believe I wasn't your first," he huffs suddenly against your skin.
"What?" You squeak, heat flushing over your skin at the sudden change in conversation.
"Pilot! I wanted to take you on your first flight," He sighs, pulling away to pout at you in the most adorable of ways. It makes you want to laugh at the look of actual disappointment on his face. You hadn't realised it had meant so much to him, then you remember that he had seen you as a challenge and can't help but wonder if it's purely that someone else won, where he lost. You can tease him about it later and find out.
For now you'll sooth his jealousy just a little.
"Does it help if I tell you your dad had to basically restrain me. I cried, had I don't know how many panic attacks, shut my eyes the whole way, and I absolutely never want to do it again?"
Poe considers this for a minute before he grins, "Kinda does… but not the crying or panic bit. Or the fact you don't want to do it again" he clarifies quickly, before you have a chance to tease him about enjoying your misery. "We can work on changing that last part. And I'm still sad you didn't trust me to take you first."
"Well maybe if you didn't fly that barely legal piece of junk X-Wing I'd have-"
He suddenly leans forward and presses his lips to yours, cutting off any further insults you could throw at his ship, and while his kiss takes you by surprise, it's not unwelcome, and you immediately find yourself sinking into it.
The kiss tastes of desperation, of impatience, of longing buried for too long.
You let out a soft moan as his tongue licks into your mouth, deepening the kiss. You tangle your fingers in his sweat damp curls in the way you've wanted to for so long.
His helmet thumps noisily to the ground when he drops it to wrap both his arms around you this time, pulling your body hard against his. He slides one hand up your back to the back of your neck, holding your mouth to his as he kisses you passionately.
This time it isn't his comms that interrupt you, but the hollering cheer of his squadron.
You pull apart suddenly, your cheeks hot with embarrassment.
Poe gives you an abashed smile, throwing a rude hand gesture to his still cheering comrades, mumbling a soft apology.
"Sorry, I just decided it might be better to skip the talking part this time, since it didn't really work out so well last time."
You can't help but let out a soft laugh, feeling dizzyingly elated at the lingering feel of his lips on yours.
"No, it did not."
Poe grins, drawing you close once more, "now what were you saying about my beautiful custom X-Wing that you are absolutely going to be flying one day?"
You roll your eyes. Flyboys.
The Commander & The Star
Tumblr media
Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader
Word count: 2.2k+
Summary: Maybe you realised you love your best friend when it’s too late
Warnings/Tags: mentions of death, injury, explosions, fire, guilt, also a couple swears in there, probably the most angst I’ve ever written(I promise there’s a happy ending), cocky Poe Dameron, overuse of the words TIE Fighter and X-Wing(sorry), in case it isn’t obvious I know nothing about flying either and there’s of course some smooching
a/n: yeah sorry this came out of nowhere and is probably a bit of a mess and ngl I don’t fully understand Star Wars but I do love Poe Dameron so… hope you enjoy!
also I’m pretty sure there’s no mentions of gender or appearance or anything like that but as always if I’ve got that wrong and there is let me know! Appreciate you all, have a wonderful day🤍
(not my gif)
・☆: *.☽ .* :☆
nonononono…
You’re stumbling over rubble, uncaringly inhaling thick smoke as your numb legs carry you across the rugged terrain. Your heart thrashes around in your rib cage as your eyes sting with tears. No one ever prepares you for this when you’re learning to fly, not even your worrying thoughts every time either of you got in an X-Wing could prepare you for this.
Just moments ago you’d watched your best friend get shot out of the sky. The best pilot in the Resistance, hell the best pilot in the galaxy had been shot down in front of your very eyes.
It was only supposed to be a recon mission on some desolate planet no one had heard of for many, many years. But of course, in all of the galaxy, the First Order had a spontaneous patrol in the exact area just by the planet you were looking for. Poe was quick to spot them but before the two of you could make a quick getaway the four TIE fighters were barrelling in your direction.
“Shit! We gotta take them down. You take the two on the left and I’ll go right,” Poe’s crackly voice coming through your speaker somehow sounds calm in the middle of all this. It doesn’t matter how many times you fly your X-Wing or fight off the enemy there’s always a twinge of doubt about your ability in the back of your mind every time. But it all washes away every single time Poe utters the words, “Hey, you’re okay. We’ve got this.”
Your X-Wings are close enough that you can look to your right and see him in his cockpit. When he looks over at you it feels like time stands still for just a second, then you share a nod before both flying off in different directions. Your ships are still connected by your communicators so you can hear all the whooping and taunting Poe does as he flies. No matter how distracting he is, the sound of his voice is always something that will calm you. Even as you manoeuvre around the two TIE Fighters that are close on your tail.
“Poe! I can’t shake these guys,” you’re pulling up trying to roll over the top of the TIE Fighters to get an advantage behind them. You’re too out in the open and you’re finding it difficult to get around them. You’d never want to admit that the First Order is good at anything but maker these pilots are brilliant.
“We need to go down,” you can hear him pushing buttons, obviously trying to figure out a plan on the spot, “ah! There’s some mountains below. We’re better down there, I’ve pinpointed it on your map okay?”
“Shit!” You jump when you suddenly see one of the Tie Fighters in front of you explode, pulling a hard left to avoid going headfirst into it.
“You’re welcome!” You can picture the smug look on Poe’s face, always looking for a way to show off. Always a little reckless too. The man’s still chasing off his own two enemies he didn’t need to pick yours off for you too.
“A little warning next time would be great,” you push a few buttons, pulling up your map on the little screen in front of you. The one TIE now behind you again, chasing you down and shooting off blasters in every direction. You try to pick up speed as you quickly descend into the planet’s atmosphere, your ship beeping and flashing red in warning.
“Careful, Star.” The callsign he’d chosen for you rolling off his tongue with ease still makes your heart do a little flip. Your mind instantaneously shifts focus onto Poe’s X-Wing flying ahead as a TIE Fighter tries to come at him from the side. You’re quick to turn toward it, expertly flipping switches and locking your launcher onto the enemy ship. You can’t help but tease Poe just a little, “Careful, Commander.” The TIE explodes just as you speak and you smugly pull away in a different direction still acutely aware of the ship following you.
“A little warning?” He mocks your previous words and you can’t help but roll your eyes. Your head switches focus back to the task at hand, you’re trying to find an opportunity to lose the guy behind you or make him crash whichever comes first. Your eyes scan the new terrain, the mountains are just ahead but it’s too open and the gap between you and the enemy is closing.
“Change of plan!” You pull up and left suddenly yanking your ship in the direction of some towering trees, “gonna try lose them in the forest.”
“Star.” Poe’s voice warns, he always hates when you split off but you’re the only one he ever trusts to make decisions on the fly. You choose to just ignore the warning until he repeats it just as you spot the TIE Fighter pull away from your rear and go towards Poe. Shit.
“Poe!” You pull back hard, your X-Wing just floating on the spot for a second before it twists and you’re trying to speed toward the other ships.
“Yeah, I see them! Can you get behind them and I’ll lead them-“ A shot clips one of Poe’s wings and you can hear the beeping coming from his control pad.
“Poe?!” You’re immediately concerned, thinking the worst as you catch up.
“I’m good, just a little damage!” If you’d been anyone else you’d have missed the tinge of worry in his voice but you’re you and you’ve been his best friend since day one. His worry bleeds into your brain and your focus falters for just a second you miss a shot on one of your enemies. It comes back quickly as you start to see Poe’s ship slowing down significantly, giving the TIEs an advantage. One tries to take his side again just like the one before while the other continues to chase him from behind. You’re just out of range to lock your blasters on the ship and you’re pushing your X-Wing to its limits now just needing to get a little closer.
“comeoncomeoncomeon!” You’re nervously mumbling, your whole body tense, “YES!” Your control pad shows it’s locked on the target and you fire rapidly before it can change. Before you can even celebrate taking down another First Order pilot you see the red beams shoot out from the TIE Fighter you’d just been pursuing right before it explodes. You watch in horror as it completely takes out Poe’s other wing and he starts spinning toward the ground. He clips the last remaining TIE Fighter on his way down and sends it spinning straight into a tree and explodes.
You screech out his name as you hear his ship beeping through your comms, you can just make out what you think is Poe hitting the control panel with his fist. He doesn’t say a word and you feel stuck in place like some kind of force is holding you there so you can watch your best friend plummet to his death into the forest below. As if someone flips a switch you’re steering down haphazardly, not being as careful as you normally are when landing your X-Wing. It’s barely on the ground before you’re tugging at your seat belts and pulling off your helmet. You forego deploying your ladder instead just ungracefully slipping down the side and landing on the ground with a thud that sends shooting pain up your legs.
There are bits of TIE Fighter smoking or on fire, there are even parts of Poe’s beloved X-Wing scattered on the ground. Your legs feel like lead as you climb up a mound covering where you’re sure Poe crash-landed. Your lungs burn as you inhale the thick smoke in the air and you’re scared. So scared. You reach the top and you almost fall straight back down, the sight before you making your legs weak. That beloved X-Wing he’d spent years working on, the thing that had tally marks scratched into the floor of how many people he’d lost so he always knew what he was fighting for. That godforsaken thing you’d both spent countless late nights fixing up, just in pieces in front of you. It’s hard to see it all, a part obviously exploded and was blowing thick dark smoke out into the air. Your eyes sting and you’re honestly not sure if it’s the smoke or the fact you think your best friend just died and you blame yourself for it already. There were so many things left unsaid, so many adventures you were supposed to go on together. You knew every time either of you flew that this could happen but some part of you thought that you were both invincible, that nothing would ever happen to you and now it has and you’re numb.
Your legs almost give out as you clumsily stumble down the mound. You can feel your body trembling as you search the wreckage for confirmation of your worst fear. You’re coughing now as you get closer finding heaps of metal you start pulling apart in hopes you’re wrong.
He won’t get to see the Residence win.
He won’t get to grow old and have the kids he said he wanted.
You won’t get to spend another day with your best friend.
You won’t get to tell him you love him.
Your thoughts race at light speed and your legs finally give out, you sink to your knees and sobs freely fall out of you.
“I-I hope those tears aren’t for me Star,” his voice is gruff, he’s coughing too and you almost think you’re hearing things until your head snaps around and you can see him limping toward you a few feet away.
“Poe? Poe!” You’re slipping on the ground as you clamber to your feet and then you’re sprinting toward him. Uncaring that you were just on the ground sobbing because you thought he was dead. He’s covered in ash and his flight suit is torn in places and singed in others. You just manage to make out the little cuts littering his handsome face that you know he’ll think make him look tough later. Then when you’re within touching distance your hands reach for his face and you don’t even realise you’re kissing him until you are. You’re kissing Poe Dameron and it feels like heaven. You’re holding onto him for dear life as if he might disappear but relief floods your brain, he’s really there, he’s alive. Then suddenly your logical brain kicks in and you abruptly pull away looking at him wide-eyed with disbelief. Your hands move away and back again before resting on his shoulders and your brain just acts like you didn’t just kiss your best friend but he hisses and recoils one shoulder away from your hand.
“Yeah I’m gonna need you to put that back in,” he jokes like you’re not now just staring at his dislocated shoulder. Your relief-addled brain had clearly missed that upon your quick inspection as you raced over. You’re trying to focus on inspecting him for any further injuries now instead of focusing on the way he tasted like those blue candies he buys in bulk because he eats so many. You don’t even look up at him when he calls your name, busying yourself with looking over a cut on his other arm and thinking if you have enough first aid supplies to treat all of this. Then he says your name a bit more sternly, his working arm swatting both yours away and he reaches up to hold your face. He tilts your head up so you’re looking directly at him now and you watch his smile grow, “how long have you been holding out on me?” You must look completely dumbfounded because he chuckles a little before it turns into a cough and then a groan of pain as he buckles over a little. You’re quick to support him, the trained medic in you taking over as you wrap his uninjured arm around your shoulders.
“Come on,” you pause for a second to collect your thoughts and find the right words to say, “we can talk about this later.” It comes out more like a question, hope seeping out of every word.
“Oh we’re not done with this,” he gives you that smug look he does when he gets a bit cocky and you can’t help the way your elbow just ever so slightly nudges his ribs, sending him into another coughing fit and wiping the cocky look off his face.
You laugh just a little as he scolds you, trying and failing to use his ‘in charge commander’ voice, “not funny! Gonna write you up for that.”
“I’d like to see you try,” still chuckling, you glance at his dislocated shoulder, the side with which he writes and you see it click in his brain when he realises.
“Oh ha ha, laugh at the injured man. I can type with my other hand y’know,” your body’s still riding high on the adrenaline but your heart is calm. Poe’s here with you, you’re both alive and maybe you’re in love with each other and you just never realised.
I just called to say I love you
Fandom: Star Wars
Pairing: Poe Dameron x gn!reader
Words: 1500
Summary: When you are worried about Poe on his mission, he tries to put your mind at ease.
Warnings: Mostly fluff with some sprinkles of angst, reader is extremely anxious in the beginning, no gender specific descriptions of the reader but Poe refers to them as Beebs’ mommy
Tumblr media
The buzzing of your holopad made you wake from your troubled dreams with a start. Still in a daze, it took you several seconds to become aware of your surroundings and realize that you must have fallen asleep on your bed after tossing and turning for hours.
Slightly disoriented you groggily tried to grab your holopad from your nightstand, when you realized with a jolt that there was only one person who would try to contact you at this time of night. The reason why you hadn’t been able to find any proper rest for more than three weeks now: Poe.
Suddenly wide awake, you quickly unlock the holo call while trying to find some clothes between the sheets in case you would have to jump into action immediately.
“Poe?!”
“Hey, Koyopoo!”
“Are you all right? Do you need back up? A mechanic crew? An emergency medical team? Substitute transport?”
“Actually I just – “
“You didn’t accidentally blow up another X-wing, did you? Did you blow up another X-wing? Please tell me you didn’t blow up another X-wing!”
“No honey, I just – “
“Why didn’t you contact the control room? Did Lt. Prebun mix up the frequencies for the emergency channels again? I swear, this guy…”
“Sweetheart, could you just – “
“I told you, you should have taken more pilots to the rendezvous point, didn’t I? I told you…”
You were half way finished with trying to pull the next best shirt over your legs when your sleep-deprived brain finally caught up with the lack of urgency in Poe’s voice. You hesitated.
“Wait, why… why are you so calm?”
“Because you seem to be excited enough for the two of us?”
“Sh… sorry, sweetie!” You tried your best to calm down taking a deep breath before asking, “What do you need?”
“First of all, I need you to relax, bups, everything’s fine!”
“I am relaxed!!!” you shot back with the calmness of an exploding death star.
“Snugglebums…” he cooed gently.
“Kriff, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m just… slightly on edge.”
“I know, pumpkin, that’s why I wanted to tell you the we’re all okay as soon as the comms were safe to use again.” His voice was so soft and soothing that you could actually feel some of the tension being released from your body.
“Also…”
There was always an ‘also’ with Poe, wasn’t there. As if reading your thoughts, though, he immediately assured you, “Everything is fine, really! I just… I just needed to hear your voice.”
Even through the blurry image generated by your holopad you could see the warmth and adoration radiating from his eyes as he lovingly touched the screen of his device.
You could only imagine how much of a mess you probably represented right now, with your tousled and tangled hair sticking up from your head in every direction, your puffy eyes heavy from sleep deprivation and your face crinkled with worry lines. Yet Poe’s eyes seemed to glisten as if he was looking at the most precious treasure in the galaxy. He might have been at the other end of the universe and yet you could sense his feelings for you flowing through you, warming your heart and soul as if he was right there beside you.
Despite your best attempts at trying to sound serious, you weren’t able to keep your emotions out of your voice. “Poe, you know what the General said about keeping the comms clear during missions...”
“I remember, peachy!” He grinned. “But I have a very important message for you, you see?”
“Wait, what, you do? Hang on a second…”
Switching into mission mode again, you frantically rummaged through your sheets looking for your datapad to write down Poe’s message. When you finally found it, you unlocked it as quickly as possible, nodding in Poe’s direction, “Okay, I’m ready, shoot!”
“Right.” He cleared his throat a little overdramatically.
“I just called…” he began.
“I just called…” you repeated typing as fast as you could.
“…to say…” he continued.
“…to say…” you repeated, wondering why nobody had informed you that the secret code for transmitting messages had obviously been changed again.
“I love you!”
“I love… Pohoe!”
“Awwwww did you hear that, Beebs? Your mommy loves me!” The mischievous glint in his eyes accompanying his cheeky smile was framed by the most gorgeous crinkles in the galaxy.
Fighting very hard to refrain from simply covering the holo projection in smoochies, you tried to remember your professional training when you asked him cautiously, “Poe, what did you do?”
“What makes you think I did something?” He raised an eyebrow without losing his scrumptious smile.
“Well, for starters, you calling me Beebs’ mommy usually means that you fear you might be in trouble.”
As the transmittance became a little wibbly-wobbly, you were only able to catch a few excited beeps before you could hear Poe again, “Beebs wants to know if you love him, too!”
“Changing the subject, are we, sweetie? Of course, I love him, too!”
“I’m sorry, peanut, I don’t think he heard that.”
“I love you, Beebs!” you exclaimed a little louder.
“Whaaaaat?”
“I love you, Beebs!” you basically screamed at your holopad.
“Geez, babe, there really is no need to wake up half the base!”
Spinning around you nearly fell of the bed when you realized that the man you had assumed to be several systems away was suddenly standing in the door to your room.
“I am going to ki…” – “kiss me?” he chimed in hopefully.
You were about to tell him that he got it half right and look for a pillow or maybe something not so soft to throw at him, when the relief of seeing him safe and sound took over and you leapt to your feet closing the distance between the two of you in a heartbeat. Throwing your arms around him, you bury your face in the crook of his neck, not quite succeeding at suppressing a few sobs of relief.
Whatever cheeky grin or witty comment might have been on his lips, was quickly wiped away as he pulled you as close to him as humanly possible. “Hey, Koyopoo,” he whispered softly, placing a gentle kiss on top of your head.
You allowed yourself to cling to him just long enough to convince yourself that he was actually back and safe in your arms before pulling back to examine him for possible injuries. At least that had been your plan. Which was significantly hampered by the fact that Poe was not ready to let go of you yet by a long shot.
“Poe, sweetie, just lemme…“ – “I’m fine,” he said, knowing exactly what you were about to do and not loosening his hold on you one bit.
“The last time you said that you had to spend two weeks in intensive care,” you pointed out,  drawing a sheepish giggle from him.
“I’m fine, love,” he repeated a little softer before pulling you even closer to his chest. Closer than you could remember ever being held by him. Close enough for your relief to be dampened by concern.
“Poe, what happened on that mission?” you asked him softly.
“Nothing. I mean, nothing to worry about. I just really really really missed you, boo.”
Gently cupping his cheek you scanned his face carefully, finding nothing there but pure sincerity and endless affection.
Before you got the chance to lean in for a proper kiss, you felt a nudge to your knee, which was followed by a few impatient beeps.
“Oh yeah, Beebs would like to tell you that he loves you too!” Poe explained laughing.
As you knelt down to give the little droid a few belly rubs, he began to wiggle excitedly and chirp happy beeps at you, which became even happier when you leaned forward to place a little kiss on his dome.
“Oh, so *he* gets a kiss?” Poe pouted.
“That’s for bringing him safely back to me,” you explained partly to him and partly to the little droid. “Thank you, Beebs!”
“I had a little to do with it, too, you know.” As he crossed his arms as if he had been mortally offended, his pout intensified.
“Sure you had, flyboy!” you grinned, patting his knee sympathetically.
“C’mere!”
Pulling you back up and into his arms, he gently rubbed his nose against yours before hugging you even tighter than before. As your head came to rest on his shoulder, he put his cheek against yours, tenderly swaying you both from side to side, as if dancing to a silent and soothing rhythm.
“Baby, we really need to find a way to help you relax and stop worrying so much whenever I am on a mission.”
“Mmhhmmmm…” you hummed against his shoulder. “You mean like when you start pacing across the landing pad three hours before my scheduled return? Like when you personally double-check each first aid kit on our transports? Like when you ask my mech at least five times if they are sure my wing is in ship shape condition before every flight? Like when you nearly lost it with the new comm officer for losing contact with me during our last mission?” You raised your head to be able to look at him. “That kind of relaxing?”
“Hold on, I didn’t… how do you even know about this?”
Unable to hide your smile, your gaze flickered involuntarily towards BB-8, prompting Poe to grumble, “You little snitch!”
Appalled by the accusation, the little droid rolled backwards chirping a few indignant beeps that were followed by a long and sad one.
“No, no, of course I am not mad at you, buddy!”
“Whoooeeeeeeh! Bleep blob da blibbo?”
“No, I have no idea why they are wearing my shirt on their bum,” Poe laughed before turning back to you. “Sweetiepie? Why *are* you wearing my shirt on your bum?”
Letting out a groan you leaned your forehead against his shoulder. “Because.”
With a chuckle, Poe pulled you closer towards him.
“I think I kind of like it.”
“Really…” you murmured into the fabric of his flight suit.
“Can I tell you what else would look really good on your bum?”
“Mmhmmm? Of course you can,“ you mumbled as you nuzzled your face deeper into the crook of his neck.
With the fast decrease of adrenaline in your system now that you were back in his arms, you could feel the last weeks of worrying catching up with you quickly and your head was growing heavier by the second. If it hadn’t been for Poe holding you upright as you melted into him, you probably would have collapsed already.
“Maybe some other time,” he smiled. Keeping you steady against his chest, he carefully guided you to your bed. After gently helping you to lie down, he took a moment to smile at the way you seemed to be drifting back to sleep already.
Having made sure that BB-8 was properly docked into his charging station, he swiftly got out of his boots and his flight suit before climbing into bed right next to you.
As he pulled the cover over both of you, you snuggled up against him laying your arm around him, melting into his comforting warmth with your head tugged safely beneath his chin. Slowly stroking his hand up and down your back while leaving the softest of kisses on your temple, he could feel you smiling against his chest.
“Hey, Poe?”
“Mmhhhm?”
“I love you, too!”
