I think there’s a little bit of a bambi effect with Pabu (the episode, not the place). I mean—you know how when people talk about Bambi it’s always, “Oh yeah, that movie where the little baby fawn frolics with his woodland friends and then his mom dies and oh isn’t it sad.”
And yes, it is sad, and there are adorable baby animals and all that, but in all the times I’ve ever heard anyone my age bring up that movie, I’ve never heard anyone comment on anything that happens in the entire second half after the mom dies and after Bambi grows up, including the entire climax of the film where there’s a huge forest fire and Bambi almost gets killed by hunting dogs. A lot happens! It’s actually kind of intense! But—and I’m not sure why this is, though I suspect it’s a combination of well-meaning parents turning the movie off before the scene where Bambi’s mom dies/some kids having such a hard time with that sequence that they don’t remember anything past it/kid’s losing interest during the second half—people don’t remember that section most of the time.
But, anyway, that’s what I mean by bambi effect—the first and overall calmer half of an episode or movie completely overshadowing the more intense and more eventful second half in fan discussions. And with Pabu, we tend to talk about the first half. It’s always, “The batch goes to Space Greece for a vacation and eats sushi,” and not, “THERE’S A TSUNAMI AND EVERYONE ALMOST DIES.” Because that also happens. It’s funny.

WARRIOR NUN: WAS AVATRICE ALWAYS CANON?
In EXCLUSIVE - Fuera de Foco spoke with its creator, Simon Barry, who told us more about the Warrior Nun mythology, stuntwork, and of course, the relationship between Ava and Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) and the potential return for a third season.
Avatrice was always canon
By the end of the first season, the potential relationship between Beatrice and Ava was one of the most popular topics on the show. In such a way that the known ship Avatrice was one of the most anticipated things by the fans of the series.
In the second season, Warrior Nun places a greater emphasis on the story between the two, which several viewers assumed was due to the strength that the ship had had on social networks after the first season. However, Simon Barry told us that Avatrice had actually always been part of the plan.
“Avatrice was always a point, a slow romance in the Warrior Nun story.” assured the showrunner , who points out that the second season of the series was written before the first even premiered on the platform.
“We understood how good it was: Ava and Beatrice on the show, and Alba and Kristina were very good, they had great chemistry. So the writers and I started writing from what we knew, something that the audience didn't necessarily know yet. So it was interesting that afterward the public was on the same page as us, because the series came out and they went crazy for it, for them.” - Simon Barry, Out of Focus
However, Barry commented that while the relationship between Ava and Beatrice is interesting on its own, it also has a reason for being for the story as a whole.
“It's not just about them having a relationship. It's mixed with the whole theme of the second season, which is about sacrifice and feeling that something or someone belongs to you." Recounted the showrunner, who added that "This relationship was the best way to portray the challenges that Ava was facing, as she took responsibility for her as a hero."
On the other hand, he comments that as for Beatrice, the story with Ava had to build her as a character, because "she also had to allow herself to be who she needs to be, risking losing Ava, which is hard."
Would the ending have been different?
Simon Barry revealed that despite the season's satisfying audiences, the team had written a scene between Ava and Beatrice that never saw the light of day. Well, according to the creator, although he responded to much of what the fans were asking for, he would have lessened the emotion of the final scene between the characters.
“I wrote a scene where Ava and Bea were in bed together. Not like something romantic, but them trying to get on the same terms to understand each other, and it was awkward because they weren't a couple yet." Barry detailed, assuring that it was also one of the funniest scenes to write.
"We removed it because we didn't need it, we did more by avoiding being so explicit with the tension, and that made the ending have a bigger emotional impact." - Simon Barry, Out of Focus
From emotion to action
Perhaps one of the things that stands out the most about the season is the impeccable work done by its actors and doubles in the action scenes and battle choreography ; especially considering that both Alba Baptista , as Kristina Tonteri Young, William Miller and Lorena Andreaperformed several of their risk scenes, seeking to be "really present in the battles".
“Many of the actors we have in the series do their stunts, at a very high level,” said Barry, who stresses the importance of the work done between the actors, stuntmen, and stunt and fight coordinators , Coco Usín and Lee Huang.
"We built a training place in Madrid, where all the scenes were broken down by the coordinators and then filmed,"said the showrunner, who also shared that actors and doubles trained together so that " when they see them on camera they know the movements and we could choose who did what.”
“Some of the actors told us that those scenes were enjoyable to do, they liked the physicality of them. […] Alba in particular was very interested in doing more action scenes on her own and learning from her. She has a great understanding of her own physical strength and she is very good at it. She excited us because we could use her more for filming as well." - Simon Barry, Out of Focus

Hang on. It seems like Mastermind isn't Lu Guang's song like I thought it was but Liu Xiao's. Lyrics below with the Chinese parts translated via Google.
Time is a hypocritical construct
Righteously it wipes out all of us
But I keep rising back from the dust
Again and again again and again
无数碎片 [countless fragments]
不停缠绕相连 [Continuously entwined and connected]
The shadows they whisper in your head
I let them linger and you will like it
You're tied on my strings like a puppet
Before you even notice
I made a deal with the demons
I crave the feel of true desire
There's nothing real 终究走向黑暗 [Eventually heading towards darkness]
Listening all your desperation sounding like a song
Destiny is just my game but is all you counting on right now
Joining the game
Killing spree I'm enjoying the game
So get ready I'm here
Get ready for it for it
Again and again again and again
Take my hand let's set this world on fire
Light it up for the show
Pain will get to you when the night arrives
Like the hunter when a prey lies
It's just how the world's like
Dadadada dadadada
Got nothing holding me back
Dadadada dadadada
Mastermind stays in the dark
Let my flame be your redemption
If you ever get helpless
Just take it in and we'll have some fun
在雷鸣之间我不计代价 [Between the thunder I don't care about the cost]
承受无限电压太蛊惑的力量 [The power to withstand infinite voltage is too bewitching]
在每个时间都呈现我推演结局 [Show me the ending of my deduction every time]
没人能改变或阻挡 [No one can change or stop]
You're down on your knees 'cause u can feel the pressure when I'm taking over
Ain't no too hard to see so u better believe
我就是唯一信仰 [I am the only faith]
切熟悉的全坍塌 [Everything familiar collapsed]
棋盘上未知的玩家 [Unknown player on the board]
Joining the game
Killing spree I'm enjoying the game
So get ready I'm already here
Can't you see it's a checkmate uh
Take my hand let's set this world on fire
Light it up for the show
Pain will get to you when the night arrives
Like the hunter when a prey lies
It's just how the world's like
Dadadada dadadada
Got nothing holding me back
Dadadada dadadada
Mastermind stays in the dark
Let my flame be your redemption
If you ever get helpless
Just take it in and we'll have some fun

So, going to link a couple of things before I start with this.
Firstly, the new MV for the Vortex/Overthink/Tides medley which is going to form the basis of my observations.
Secondly, this post, which makes a strong argument that Link Click is deliberately drawing from other time travel media. In this case, the 2002 version of The Time Machine. Also, a fun fact not mentioned in the linked post, but that I recently discovered is that the name of the girlfriend the time traveller is constantly trying to save is *Emma*.
Now that I've linked these two, I just want to say that this rest of this post is me having fun and I would love for these to be deliberate references, but let's be real, a lot of time travel media understandably shares a lot of visual language. Hourglasses, butterflies, and clocks are all fairly recurrent themes.
Click the read more for a mix of potential references to other time travel media and screenshots of specific details of the new MV I found interesting:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Link Click (note the photo reel design). Right: Doctor Who (specifically one of the intros for the Twelfth Doctor)
And to add to the photography aesthetic present throughout, the photo reel clock resolves itself into a camera lens:
Tumblr media
Next, we have a main character centred within a clock. In both cases, the character casts multiple shadows that resemble clock hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Link Click. Right: Steins;Gate
Tumblr media
The shot where Qiao Ling is stood still amongst a moving crowd is neat for two reasons. First, the people she's surrounded by seem to be those related to the cases CXS/LG have taken on. You can see Emma just behind in the above screenshot. And the other thing is that the first time this sequence plays the moving characters are too blurry to easily make out. When the sequence reverses however, and the lyrics speak of "pausing" the scene actually freezes with all the characters clear for a tiny bit. (I didn't screenshot purely because it was a pain to get the exact moment but you can check this if you want)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upper left: Link Click. Upper right: Higurashi Gou/Sotsu. Bottom: Steins;Gate 0.
Next up: fragments! This one is honestly a real stretch, but hey, there are at least two other time travel adjacent shows that use them as visuals in their openings. I would really like the use to be similar to in Higurashi (the example screenshot is from the anime sequel Gou/Sotsu but the sea of fragments is present in the og too). In Higurashi, each time "loop" is actually an alternate timeline (wherein events would differ slightly even without intervention) and so each fragment represents another timeline. For Steins;Gate, it's more a visual that exists purely in the opening sequence to play into the whole shattered clocks aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Link Click. Right: Steins;Gate.
This one is inspired by me watching the opening only to go "Okabe Rintaro????" when Qian Jin showed up. But also. We can clearly see some of Qian Jin's scars in this shot. There appears to be one on the back of his neck and two over his left shoulder. These have to be relevant and obviously his eye colour has me side-eyeing but I don't think we have all the pieces for this character yet. (Him being a former cop with a connection to both of our focus cop characters though makes me think)
And a final one with generic anime trope no 58382929:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Link Click. Right: Steins;Gate
I know, I know. This is typical anime/donghua. But! It's deliberately a shot in Steins;Gate that returns again and again throughout the series. It's also very associated with the character of Mayuri so take that as you will.
Bonus whatever this is:
Tumblr media
Multiple Cheng Xiaoshis in different states of doing badly. I wonder if the centremost one is the one Lu Guang appeared to be thinking of in episode 1? Possibly another "fragments" situation or if not then it may be various things Cheng Xiaoshi will go through in this season
Anyway, the Steins;Gate opening visually has a lot of similarities and of course a lot of it is natural overlap because they're both time travel series. And they both draw inspiration from The Time Machine (especially Steins;Gate's sequel, Steins;Gate 0). But I find it pretty neat how all these series from different times and places do have these recurring themes.
