A Day To Remember, Asking Alexandria, and Point North Close Out The Summer Season at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre

To be honest, I didn’t think I would even get approved for this, and I didn’t think my photos were going to and I think that’s what motivated me to go the fuck off on the collage instead. It’s hard being a blogger around professional photographers. Photography is only one part of my creativity, and I can’t just home in on that, I must be able to do other stuff because well, my mind goes about 1000mph and in 42 different directions. I couldn’t imagine what my photography would be like if I always had a camera on me shooting everything all the time. It’s not to say the people I shoot with all do the same thing, but most have more creative leaning jobs, so photography work isn’t far off.

I on the other hand work in a way that is more like my day-job which is running an adult beverage dept. at a million dollar a week grocery store. Fast paced is my wheelhouse and I think that’s one of the best parts about live music photography if I’m going to be honest. It forces you to be better than you know you are. You must be, just to keep up with the people in your town let alone the rest of the world. This is where the collages and slideshows and gifs and writing and design and edits all come into play.

I can say I’m going to cover a show, then talk like every single dork that goes to a show and sits there like a Jackapple reviewing the show like they’re at home watching it on tv. I don’t do that. I experience whatever I can. Even if it’s just me sitting in a bar room by myself hearing the sounds in the background. I can find ways to do something and that’s a massive bummer when I finally hit a wall and can’t do anything whatsoever. Thankfully those days are gone. Even with more and more shows being postponed and pushed back to next year, shows are still happening today.

Point North are a high energy band that understood the opening slot well, it sets the tone for the night. Asking Alexandria elevated the energy as soon as they walked out though. You can tell they’re seasoned veterans just by the way they command the crowd right out of the gate. I shot these dudes over 5 years ago and two of them weren’t playing with the band at the time, so this was really like the first time shooting them. They were fucking terrible at Dirt Fest in 2016 and all I can remember is that old dude filling in for Danny pronounced the city of Pontiac weird. It’s stuck with me for 5 years. Anyway, I love a band that writes a song called Anti-Socialist and then doesn’t say the name of the title when talking about it. I know you want to be Texans so fucking bad. The hilarious thing to me about this is that my blue-blooded rust belt living ass will always be more American than these dudes. People are interesting. Including myself for sure, because I’m being a dick for no reason. I think this is something not only myself can work on but probably most people.

You cannot please everyone. It is not up to you to decide how other people think of you. Just be yourself and the right people will ride and die with you. The rest don’t have to be enemies. Having a few things, we don’t see eye to eye on is not a death sentence for a potential great friendship. It’s really depressing to me that I’ve been watching the left side continue to eat itself for not being 100% on every issue that comes out. All I’ve come to is this simple conclusion, I don’t know shit. I’m not here to tell people who to shoot shows. I’m not here to tell people how to write. I’m not here to tell you how to do anything. I’m here for my own selfish reasons and that is it. This music means more to me than it means to anyone who is going to ever read this shit. Why else would I work a job that gives me the easy ability to do this shit in the first place? I can go anywhere and work retail or adult beverage and make more. I do it because I can move hours around. I do it because I can come in and not add hours to our allotment. That day job has opened me to people I wouldn’t have otherwise fucked with. People I consider great friends nowadays. The fucking air is thick with this idea that we must hate each other. I don’t want anyone to be harmed for their viewpoints, unless it’s a fucking chomo or a fucking actual nazi scumbag or a rapist. Are you feeling me? Like, not agreeing with these weird Yorkshire dickheads doesn’t mean I hate them or think I’ll of them at all. Ask me that a few years ago and I probably would say differently.

I think it needs to happen; we need to chill the fuck out. Collectively.

What do we have in common though? Music, partying, having a blast, cool so why not focus on that shit? I expect Anti-Flag and Toby Keith to do their things ya know? And there is most definitely a place for either side of the spectrum. I hope more to come to the conclusion that it’s not left or right it’s not black or white, it’s all grey and there are these things called nuance and intent. Anyway, these dudes are cool for a bunch of dorky Englishmen. Don’t beat me up for fucking with you, not all lefty fucks have tight lips. These bitches sink ships.

What can I say? I like their old stuff.

I just wanted to shoot a show at a venue 4 years ago to the day I told someone with me “I think I need to shoot these shows by myself.” Time is a circle pit was born because of this event. I posted a collage to IG from this set and Canon the camera company commented on it and told me they loved the way I displayed my concert photos. The next day, the shit came out about Josh. That’s just how my life works. Shoot a big, massive show it might catch some traction, then, guy is a sack of shit. Allegedly. Look, I don’t run a news site. This isn’t breaking scene news. I’m not consistent enough to do that shit, nor does drama interest me. It’s impossible not to talk about here though.

All I know is I’m just a fuck-up with a camera and a knack for writing. This is a pivotal band in pop punk and easycore and still to this day highly influential in the music world. What goes on after this? I don’t have a fucking clue. I just know I took some photos. I hung out with a bunch of incredibly photographers. The weakest talent was me in that group, for sure. Highly suggest checking out all of them, just look for the clean pro photos from the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre ADTR show on either Facebook or Instagram. They’re all truly incredible at what they do, and it’s been rad watching them do their thing and being able to do mine alongside them sometimes. As for ADTR I shot the first three, they got the crowd going fucking nuts. I walked out of the amphitheatre into the pouring down rain with my camera bag and went right to my Jeep. It took me an hour and a half to get there. It took me an hour to get home.
