Look but don't touch. Poison oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum) is in every one of these pictures, and is out in full color on most of the trails in my area. I've always thought them beautiful at this time of year, although most people reasonably recoil on sight. I know folks who've had to be hospitalized after close encounters (when poison oak burns, for instance, you really, really don't want to be anywhere near the smoke), but these plants also give life; towhees, squirrels, and even deer eat their berries and shelter in them, and I think we owe something to their power to discourage people from trampling carelessly through the undergrowth. I like to think of them as protectors.
Also present here are Eucalyptus (I'm not sure which variety – the scent is transporting, but they're aggressively invasive and explode if fire catches their crowns, so I'm not that happy to be living in such close quarters with them) and a roadside thistle (probably Cirsium vulgare – also known as bull thistle – and certainly not a native). Poison oak is one of the few plants that manages in Eucalyptus stands here; the litter is so thick and full of tannins that most plants just don't make it. It looks like there's some coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) in there, though!

Poisinia art trade for @clbl-arts 🥰
[image description: Art of Lavinia Asimov and Poison Oak from Trials of Apollo. They are both standing knee deep in a river, with a forest background. Poison Oak is a dryad with dark wood textured skin and sharp features. Her hair is green and tipped with red, and pulled into a leafy, poofy ponytail. She is wearing a simple white dress that is tied at thigh-length. She watches Lavinia with a carefully amused expression. Lavinia is a pale girl with cropped pink hair. She is wearing a green flannel bandana on her head, a pink tank top, and Jean shorts, with a lesbian flag colored bracelet and a Magen David necklace. She has scars on her legs and arms. She is leaping anxiously into the cold water with a splash, clearly flustered. End description]

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE I AM NOT A DR:
For the people who get really nasty bug bites, a oil or salve made of Dried Jewel Weed (leaves & flowers) will take down swelling and itching, and provide comfort. It's a treatment for poison oak as well.

Identifying Poisonous Plants!!
Whether you're going out for an evening stroll or foraging, being able to identify poisonous plants can be incredibly helpful.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is no "one rule" to look for when identifying a poisonous plant from a harmless one. Each plant has its own characteristics that are unique to it, with some obvious overlapping of course. Also each person can have a different experience with a plant as well. Meaning, one person may be able to handle something another person can't.
A lot of the variance has to do with individual allergies, but there are also those plants that everyone needs to stay away from as well.
Some poisonous plants include:
Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac - these are know to cause contact dermatitis as well as other more severe symptoms (depending on the seriousness of the allergy)
Virginia Creeper - This is a pal to Poison Ivy that grows near it in most cases. While the leaves don't cause the dermatitis, the fruits are very poisonous. If ingested they can cause serious kidney damage and even death.
Wild Cherries - These are very tricky to identify so always use caution before consuming. [I've acutely poisoned myself with only 1 berry and it't definitely not something to mess with. For me, it caused disorientation, a drunk feeling, loss of balance, and an overall feeling of being unwell.]
Poke/Pokeweed - While there are ways to prepare Poke leaves to consume, this plant is best to be avoided by newcomers. If you boil the leaves, changing the water out 3 times, you can eat them. The benefit of doing so is that they purge your lymphatic system. This plant is known to be full of berries but they are poisonous so do not consume! (The berries can be used to make dye's however.)
Horse Nettle/Nightshade Plants - The plants in this family contain a compound called "solanine" which is highly poisonous. Most of the levels of solanine vary throughout the year. For example, Horse Nettle is known to be its most poisonous in the fall. Another example of a nightshade plant are potatoes! While potatoes are not poisonous, I'm sure you've been told to avoid eating any green ones - this is because of the high solanine level
The best way to identify which plants are poisonous or not is to do research into the plant in question and keep a detailed field journal. Using plant identification software is a great tool to use aside of your other identification methods, but they should be used with caution. Do not base the edibility of a plant solely off of an identifying app - do further research. I like to use the app to figure out the name of the plant and then compare it to what I've found on the internet.
Remember to have fun and be safe (using caution when necessary) whenever you are exploring the great outdoors!(:
