#pokemon black white pokedex entry
Text
For my ongoing analysis of Ingo and Emmet, namely examining their Pokemon teams to figure out what they say about their characters, I've been reading the Pokedex entries of their Pokemon's lines to see if I can find any trends with them. For ease of reading, I'm putting them all in one document. So if you want a one-stop shop to read up on their Pokemon's dex entries, here you go!
I'm still struggling in trying to find any kind of trend with Ingo's Pokemon where Emmet's show a pretty clear one of cooperation (and also being so violent that I just stare at the entry and go, "Emmet... What the fuck???"). If you can see a trend that I'm not able to, I would really appreciate it if you were to tell me!
Also it probably goes saying that in order for me to read it (using desktop) I have to view it at 200%.

octopath 2 as pokemon trainers! extended commentary (SPOILERS FOR BASICALLY EVERYONE'S STORY) under cut so it doesn't take up 2+ pages. Please do not think too hard about the trainer sprite choices 💗
Okay! Some of these were really easy to make (Ochette, Castti and Temenos), and some were... a bit of a challenge (Partitio and Throné)
Ochette:
VERY self explanatory. Solgaleo is Juvah (white lion), Decidueye is a combination of Mahina and Ochette's hunter class (owl and elemental arrows), Thieval is.. a fox resembling Akalā that's physical based, Shiny Magikarp is Acta (not that good, evolves after putting in a lot of effort), Turtonator is Tera (anatomy, typing), and finally, Articuno is clearly Glacis (Legendary ice bird)
Ochette's whole story is about collecting legendaries, of course her team is half legendaries and pseudo-legendaries
Castti:
Here, we start to have some more pokemon that integrate character's personality. Mega Kangaskhan is Castti's very mother bear-esque personality, nurturing yet ready to chop off someone's limbs anytime. Combusken is also an extension of this (with Castti often being called a mother hen). For some reason to me, Combusken felt more fitting to me than Blaziken, probably because it resembles a chicken more.
Lapras! This one has two reasons. It knows Sing (Castti's nighttime path action knocking people out), and Surf (We all know Castti's history with maritime traveling). Its personality also matches with Castti's drive to care for everyone.
Breloom was chosen because of its Poison Heal ability combined with it's grass/poison duotyping. Torkoal is similar as it was chosen because of it's drought ability. Both of these tie into her final chapter.
Mamoswine is Wooly-Ooly 🙂
Throné:
Lillipup is her buppy 🙂... + the pokedex entry for shield
Tumblr media
Klefki is Throné's keys for her collar coming from her parents (Klefki can learn thief, her thief parents carry her keys)
Tandemous, the Couple Pokemon, represents Mother and Father! They both teach moves to Throné that she uses throughout her life (Charm, Thief, Substitute, etc.)
Sneasler is Throne's (NO ACCENT, MY CTRL-V BROKE FOR TUMBLR ONLY.) collar, with the ability Poison Touch. Its lone wolf personality, combined with its general abilities works well as Throne.
Seviper is a black snake. Dodrio is meant to represent the structure of The Blacksnakes though, constantly fighting with its other heads until one becomes the "leader".
Overall I did try to give Throne more speedy pokemon to fit her class and Aeber's Reckoning.
Osvald:
Drampa! This represents his fatherly personality that he keeps behind his scary looks. It's very Osvald-coded to me, can you please just look at its pokedex entries? (burning homes to the ground. haha. it's almost like his third chapter... and his backstory)
Tumblr media
Charizard is his ever-burning flame in his chest, his life. Blaziken is like this except for its extra fighting typing as well as it's ability to learn Knock Off, an move that damages opponents while also removing their items (Mugging)
Alakazam... let me just pull up the dex entry. This also ties into Osvald's "Calculations complete!" battle line.
Tumblr media
Golurk is Rita (I didn't want to do Golem the pokemon so I chose the next best thing, and the ghost typing helps. I'm so sorry.), Kirlia is Elena (beautiful child, only becoming more beautiful through a better environment)
Partitio:
This is a trainwreck (cue boos). Partitio is the result of me throwing things together despite him being one of my favorite Octopath characters.
I tried to give a lot of his pokemon a secondary business advantage!
Fidough is one of these! It's bread, one of the things he could barely get enough of as a child. Fidough can kickstart the fermenting process w its yeast and it's adorable. Its also Garnet 2, less of a meanie.
Shuckle... hah. Shucks. Another one for the business advantage of berry juice (unless that harms it. then it's there for comedy). Good at foraging, probably a Partitio trait.
Snorlax um... rest move... Partitio's nap action. Needs high friendship to evolve.
Rapidash is from Partitio being described as a wild stallion as well as it's ability to learn Ember, magic that Partitio also knows.
Meowth is there because it holds an Amulet Coin, acting as the Grows on Trees ability
Musharna is Partitio's dreams and how he's made his big dreams help the whole world defeat poverty 🙂
Agnea:
Okay, there's a lot of obvious dancers here. There's also a lot of grass/bug types to show that she's a countrygirl from the Leaflands
Hitmonlee is there because it's the first kicker of the fighting types (Dancer's Ruinous Kick). It's flexible also, like Agnea (I assume superstar dancers are ?? really flexible???)
Leavanny, while it is graceful, only knows Swords Dance. Leavanny is actually meant to represent Agnea's father, with its ability to make clothing (See below).
Tumblr media
I chose Oricorio's Baile form as Agnea wears a more flamenco-esque dress
Swoobat is there because of its klutz/clumsy ability (we are introduced to Agnea by helping her find her lost purse), and because of its heart stamp attack (This references the travel banter between Agnea and Temenos in her final chapter where he tries to teach her how to remember each of the 8 gods, "Dancers seal with a kiss".)
Clefairy is just very Agnea to me, very cute and adorable little fairy.
Roserade is a straight forward Agnea reference, grass dancer
Temenos:
We start off with a Crick reference right away: Honedge. It's a steel-ghost, just like Crick 🙂. Unevolved base form pokemon, like how Crick is only a "newly anointed knight". Also bc Crick uses swords, I'm sorry.
(Mega) Houndoom is Temenos, the Pontiff's Hound. Having Temenos be a dark type fits him best, considering how he barely fits into the church and brings down the Sacred Guard.
Lycanroc's Midnight form is what Roi looks like to me. That's it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hatterene is Temenos'... off-putting nature ("Omg so cute ^_^ wait holy shit what's wrong with you" energy) as well as his inquire ability (see below). Disarming voice is like Breaking during an Inquisition in my head. Dazzling Gleam is like Holy Light. Misty Explosion is like Temenos' EX Heavenly Shine, except with swapped consequences (Misty Explosion wipes out your entire HP bar, Heavenly Shine wipes out your entire SP bar).
Tumblr media
WOOLOO. MY LITTLE LAMB!
Zoroark is Temenos' mask, that only comes off at the very end of the game. He's the black sheep of the church. He's lonely, but he's there. Does anyone hear me. Literally look 🔽
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND FINALLY. HIKARI:
Samurott. It's a sword-wielding pokemon. It's a samurai. Hikari needs water.
Machamp is Mugen, look at those arms.
Tumblr media
Braviary is an eagle, like Kuzan! With the psychic typing of its second form, it reminds me of Kuzan's transition in the end from being Ku's greatest tactician to Oboro of the Moonshade Order who revived Vide.
Arctozolt is Rai Mei, electric ice type (electric abilities living in Stormhail). The only one in pokemon.
Mightyena is well. Hikari's loyalty reminds me of pack animal behavior (lovingly). It also knows Swagger and Taunt which reminds me of Incite.
Marowak is there because Bone Rush reminds me Aggressive Slash as both are multi-hit moves. See also, its dex entries

just commenting: Ghost-Type Trainer MC made me think of Mimikyu being BFF with a Banette who also has a creepy doll appearance and it's pokedex entry is also scary but Yuu doesn't think that and that the banette is a sweetheart that only wants to be loved.
Link to the scenario =
I know you are just commenting but I have to say that you are spot on of what Yuu is feeling towards her previous ghost-type family. Yes, the pokemon may be a struggle and a handful from time to time but the effort and care that they put into training and taking care of them was worth it all to earn their trust and love in return.
Yuu loves them to death. Anyone messing with her PokeFamily will not just mess with her but also her fam.
For Banette, the pokemon completely is a simp for her trainer.
The young teen gave it all the love it wanted when they jad found it in a dump. Of course, the pokemon was weary at the trainer and tried to attack it with Yuu's pokemon by them, which had give it an disadvantage and lost.
Though Banette knew that Yuu had choose it out of pity, it was grateful for the caring and nurturing that the latter had given them.
{DELETED SCENE!}{BONUS}
" (MC) has ghost friends this whole time!?!?"
Everyone gave Kalim individual looks of disbelief, weirded out, exasperation and a blank look from what he had all just exclaim.
"What?" Kalim look all of them innocently "It's true!"
Jamil light out a sigh at he's master's usual antics "Oh Kalim..."
"Banette?"
Everyone frozed at the sudden sound coming from the entrence of the hallway. Slowly, they all saw another monster like the ones they had seen with their manager but more like a doll like the yellow one except that one is black, has magenta eyes and a creepy mouth that resembles a zipper with it holding a bunch of flowers in it's arms.
Tumblr media
The thing just stared right at them, as if staring righg at their souls to see if they are worthy of living...or dying. The whole gang didnt knew what to do, all they did was staying still at the positions they are in, now knowing what to do with...with these unusual being right at front of them.
"You think its one of them?" Ace asked Deuce beside him.
"How should i know!?" Deuce loudly whispered back.
Withing those next few seconds were like hours for the gang. The eyes, the mouth and its appearance were unsettling especielly after what happened to them earlier.
Wait no more for the pokemon had made the first move.
Though it was unexpected, no suprise.
Banette's smile grew even wider and thinner, menacingly look at it's poor victims with glowing eyes, even doing the cliche putting your arms up and scary pose to play a 'little bit' with it's new guests at it's domain.
Which had worked.
White became the color of everything to the group of Vil, Rook, Epel, Kalim, Jamil, Ace and Deuce upon seeing that horryfying state that the little 'doll' had shown to them as it continues on it's way, passing by them with the flowers still in hand and onto its way to your room.
*THUD!*
Banette look behind it self and saw the whole group passed out in an instant from the sight before them, snickering at how they easily fainted by just one simple trick

#000 - MissingNo.
I think it only makes sense if I start talking about the most well known before I get to the others. That being MissingNo of course!
Now, if you look at MissingNo's pokedex entry, it'll look a little something like this.
Tumblr media
So, let's make something of our own! Ahem.
MissingNo, the Corruption Pokémon. First sighted on the coast of Cinnabar Island over in the Kanto region, it's said that this Pokémon is a shapeshifter that takes many forms- it usually resemble that of gas, sludge or floating blocks, but on the rare occasion it's known to take the shape of a ghost, an Aerodactyl fossil or a Kabutops fossil.
It's type is Bird/Normal. Yes, bird, not flying. Supposedly Bird was a scrapped type originally referring to what'd become the flying types, and it's the only Pokémon to have this type alongside it's equivalent 'M (00). Because this type technically doesn't exist, it means it's resistant and weak to nothing, so just consider it a Normal type.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MissingNo is considered a legendary Pokemon by those who believe in it's existence. When it shapeshifts into anoter pokemon it mimics everything but it's color- which means you can imagine a Bulbasaur with orange, purple, white and black as it's colors.
In the Pokemon world, it's rumored that MissingNo is one of Arceus's first creations that came out incorrectly. It might've actually been a kind of... Beta version of Mew considering it's whole shapeshifting ordeal.
So to shorten all this down into a simple Pokedex entry:
"A mysterious Pokemon from the coastline of Cinnabar island, MissingNo is rumored to have connections to Arceus itself and has the ability to shapeshift- though it keeps its colors- due to being a broken version of Mew."
Tumblr media
Oh, my beloved little MissingNo... All that popularity isn't going to fix a defense of 0, a special of 6, a speed of 29 and a HP of 33... I'll forgive you for the 136 attack though.

Canon Pokedex Entries (That Belong To Beta Designs)
One interesting thing about Pokemon’s development history is that in the early gens, the ‘dex tended to be written early on, but then would never be updated after the designs were finalized. This means that a lot of Pokedex entries in the games apply to designs that we never got. I couldn’t find any collections of these “contradictory” entries, so I wanted to list them out here.
(Note that this strictly applies to Pokedex entries only. If you guys would be interested in seeing a list of similar non-Pokedex things, like typing or design elements held from the beta, let me know.)
Tumblr media
Umbreon--Gold
When agitated, this Pokémon protects itself by spraying poisonous sweat from its pores.
We’ll start with an easy, well known one: Umbreon’s Gold entry mentions it spraying poison because it was originally meant to be a poison-type according to Gen 2′s Spaceworld beta.
Tumblr media
Dragonair--FireRed
It is said to live in seas and lakes. Even though it has no wings, it has been seen flying occasionally.
Dragonair’s beta design was named “White Dragon”, and as you can see from the image above, it had no wings--hence why Dragonair’s FireRed entry claims that it flies without wings despite it very clearly having wings.
Tumblr media
Arcanine--Blue/Red and Stadium
A Pokémon that has been admired since the past for its beauty. It runs agilely as if on wings.
A Pokémon whose beauty is legendary in China. It is said to run gracefully and lightly, as if it were flying.
Ignoring that the IRL location of China no longer exists in Pokemon, these entries mention it running “as if” it had wings or was flying. This is because Arcanine’s beta design, called “Wing”, had wings on its heels (which is also why Arcanine’s final design has clumps of fur around the legs).
Tumblr media
Celebi--Gold
When Celebi disappears deep in a forest, it is said to leave behind an egg it brought from the future.
A very obscure and weird one. Celebi’s original design was based off of Kokopelli, a fertility deity worshipped by many indigenous cultures, such as the Hopi. Kokopelli is said to carry children on his back to give to women, hence this very weird Celebi entry that states that it brings eggs from the future. (Side note: this is also probably the biggest single improvement over the beta Gamefreak has ever done because seriously, what were they thinking).
Tumblr media
Latias--Ruby
Latias is highly sensitive to the emotions of people. If it senses any hostility, this Pokémon ruffles the feathers all over its body and cries shrilly to intimidate the foe.
Latias appears to be fairly smooth in its final art, with not much implying it’s supposed to be feathery, and certainly not much implying it has enough long feathers to ruffle. This is because Latias and Blaziken were once one Pokemon; one that clearly had a lot more feathers than the final design does.
Tumblr media
Shuckle--Gold, Crystal, and Black
The Berries it stores in its vase-like shell decompose and become a gooey liquid.
The fluid secreted by its toes carves holes in rocks for nesting and can be mixed with Berries to make a drink.
It stores berries in its shell. The berries eventually ferment to become delicious juices.
Another weird one. Based on Shuckle’s original design and its original Rock/Ground typing, Shuckle is either based off of snake wine of all things, or the act of fermenting alcohol in a jug or piece of pottery. This is why it has the category of “mold Pokemon” (”fermentation Pokemon” in the original Japanese) and why there’s an emphasis on it making fermented juices (alcohol) in the ‘dex.
Tumblr media
Gligar--Gold and Ruby
It flies straight at its target's face then clamps down on the startled victim to inject poison.
Gligar glides through the air without a sound as if it were sliding. This Pokémon hangs on to the face of its foe using its clawed hind legs and the large pincers on its forelegs, then injects the prey with its poison barb.
It’s still somewhat there in the final design, but Gligar appears to be based off a facehugger, judging by the beta. It’s even possible that this is where the English name comes from (as in, H. R. Giger).

Ayo I saw something like this a while back
Can you imagine you fall into Hisui but you kept all your memories and you keep going through all this bs cause Arceus. ANYWAYS you see Ingo but like it’s obvious he doesn’t remember you cause your husband is a big baby and would’ve been hugging you in an instant, but you continue on dropping hints or at least trying to his memory in the right direction.
To him your a stranger but for some reason he feels so much love when with you, his brain is confused but his heart is screaming in pure love.
But it’s not till he sees you get absolutely bodied does he truly remember you. Be it from Lord Electrode or an alpha Pokémon, or hell he is walking through the village towards the training grounds and the guards are screaming to get a nurse ready and you’re being carried in.
Idk makes good hurt comfort in theory
ik ur ask didn't inspire me into 3000 words...
anyways:
My Sweet Lord
cw: blood and injury mention,
words: 3349
One moment, Ingo said he was going to investigate some strange light that had appeared in a tunnel. You, feeling clingy, asked to tag along. He had considered you for a moment before relenting. The tunnels always felt a bit eerie to you, as large concrete tombs meant for only vehicles and trained staff to explore. His arm moved to block you when the anomaly came into a view. A strange, white portal with odd black clouds surrounding it. Ingo yelled for you to run. Suddenly, a strange suction overcame you both, pulling you to the blinding lights. You screamed alongside him, panic leading you to try and escape, but the power of the force was impossible to escape. Desperately, you reached out for your husband. Just before you hand could grasp his gloved one, he slipped into the portal.
Tears burned your eyes as it began to shrink. No! You refused to be taken away from him. Running towards the lessening pull, you felt your body get consumed by a strange airlessness. An empty void all around, not a sound to be heard. Well, until a strange pulsing, glowing form appeared before you. A voice echoed heavily into your ears, willing you to the apparent 'Arceus'. It warned you of entry to a strange world and demanded you seek out all pokemon in order to find them once more.
Then, darkness consumed the nothingness around you.
You landed on a beach, being jostled awake by a strange man. Moving away, you blinked a few times. This place… Was not Unova. Not at all. It was soon after that you were informed of your entry in Hisui. You were unsure of the word but recalled something in an article about how Sinnoh received its name. That was impossible. You could not have been well over two hundred years into the past.
It was true, unfortunately. You came to realise as the supposed Professor Laventon pleaded for your assistance in gathering his unruly pokemon in pokeballs. Pokeballs that were not made of the modern plastic or metal but, rather, wood. You caught them with ease, having been a trainer in your youth. Technically, you still were recreationally. Nothing like your husband, of course. Speaking with Laventon, he promised an attempt to earn you a place to live in Jublife Village, but nothing concrete.
You were put through the absolute ringer. That was sarcasm, of course. Catching a Starly, Shinx, and Bidoof felt almost humiliating as a task. You pet the Bidoof while you were welcomed to the Survey Corps and given a uniform by Captain Cyllene. Your assignment, naturally, was to complete the pokedex. You felt ten years old again despite being well into your twenties.
Your life fell into a strange lull of catching pokemon, battling a frenzied noble when entering a new area, and dealing with whatever drama the Galaxy Team or the clans decided to toss out. Currently, you were on your way out after calming Lord Arcanine of the Cobalt Coastlands. What waited outside your door had you stop dead in your tracks.
Ingo, your husband, was passing by. His head turned to you. Mentally, you readied yourself for the touching reunion between the two of you. No movements were made by the man, however. Suddenly, you noticed his condition. Pristine work coat had clearly lost a battle with something that had claws, white button down was replaced with a Pearl Clan tunic, and his gloves were completely gone. "Good morning, fellow who came from the sky! Commander Kamado told me to let you know he awaits your arrival in his office," he spoke, his voice a bit more muted than its usual volume. You nodded, and he walked off somewhere.
That was Ingo… Right? You were certain it had to be. No one else could have his coat, hat, slacks, and shoes. That was Ingo. "Ingo!" you called out. His head turned around to look at you. Confusion was present on his face. Oh, no. What do you say now? His eyes showed no recognition of you. It hurt. "Uh, what's that ring on your finger?" you blurted out, unsure if it was still even on. He lifted his left hand to his vision and gazed at it carefully. "Ah, well, you know… I'm not quite sure," he answered, twirling it around, "I believe it symbolises something important to me. How about yours?" Ah, observant as always. "Marriage. My husband bought it for me," you explained simply. Would he catch on? Ingo nodded before walking off.
Kamado instructed you to handle the next frenzied Noble, Electrode, as usual. A newcomer, Warden Melli, barged in and made a scene which led to you having to battle Adaman. After that, Cyllene went over the particulars of the mission to you before checking to make sure that you were at a high enough rank to even go enter the highlands. You were, of course. Most of your time had been dedicated to the pokedex, desperate to 'seek all pokemon' as commanded.
You headed to the training grounds, where apparently both Ingo and Irida awaited you. It felt strange seeing him again. He still gazed at you with unknowing eyes, which stung you harshly. Irida greeted you with a new kindness, thankful for your help and some of her growth from the coastlands. "Hello! This gentleman is Warden Ingo, who serves Sneasler," she explained, motioning to him. He stood stiffly, a bit blankly even. It was not necessarily abnormal for Ingo to lack movement and expression, words were his forte while Emmet's was expression, yet he seemed too muted.
Even still, you were not all too surprised Ingo had become a Warden. He was an amazing trainer with unbelievable patience. It was hard to resist the urge to lean into his side, as you had always done. Ingo used to be so adamantly against PDA, fearing it would make him look unprofessional. That changed as you slowly grew closer and closer. Now, however, it felt impossible. Ingo did not know you at all.
"Pleased to properly meet you. I apologize for the abrupt how-do-you-do before. I am the warden Ingo," he introduced himself correctly, hand going behind his back and the other tipping his hat slightly. His phrasing reminded you of his introduction on the Single Battle Line. Another small needle into your slowly shifting heart into a pushpin. "I understand you’ll need a hand from Sneasler in order to meet Electrode. Whether she’ll see fit to help you, however, we can only find out by making the journey. Now, let’s have a safe journey to Mount Coronet! All aboard!" The last phrase was enunciated with a familiar pose.
Oh, Ingo. You found yourself giggling at his antics. His posing stopped as he stared at you carefully, a light pink making the smallest hint across his cheeks. Irida darted her eyes between you two before speaking, "He's a bit like you, you know." It was hard to not smile at that statement. Irida, dear girl, you have no idea. "Oh, how so?" you asked back, controlling your tone coolly. "Well, he appeared one day from who-knows-where," she began while Ingo nodded in confirmation, "What's more, much of his memory seems to be missing. Maybe travelling with you will help fill in some of the gaps in his memory."
You certainly would like to try. Out of everyone in Hisui, you were probably the person who wanted his memories to return the most. They parted from you with a simple goodbye and a promise to reunite in the highlands. Naturally, you immediately went after them. Ingo waited for you in front of a cave, stance a bit tired. It was nighttime, after all. "Hi, Ingo," you greeted him with an awkward hand wave. It was strange. You usually met him with a kiss to his cheek and a long hug. Dinner sitting on the table as he blabbed to you about his day. You truly missed Unova. Running water was a sacred gift, and you would kill for a nice bath. Especially one with Ingo.
"Hello…" his voice trailed off, like his thought got lost somewhere in the space between his brain and his mouth, "May I ask something?" You were caught off-guard but nodded. "You do realise that you have been speaking to me in another language this entire time, correct?" Had you? The language of Hisui was something you had to learn from Laventon, a fellow Galarian speaker. Of course, Ingo was someone you subconsciously would respond to in that language.
"Ah, sorry! This is what they speak where I'm from, Unova," you wondered if the word would jog anything in his brain. He nodded. "You know… In my world, there's these crazy strong trainers. Uh, do you know what a trainer is?"
He shook his head, "I don't believe that I do. The word does seem familiar, however…" His hand stroked his goatee. Poor, baby… Ingo hated whenever he was able to go without a shave. Though, he was certainly pulling it off.
"Well, they are people who train pokemon. Simple, right? My husband is one of them, along with his twin brother," you explained, leaning into his side as he guided you through the cave. A direct approach would likely scare him off. As much as you hated it, a subtle, hinting manner would prove more beneficial.
"Your husband… You mentioned him before. He gave your ring to you, right?" Ingo asked curiously, silver eyes glinting with something else. You nodded with a small smile. "I think I was married, too. I can't remember much at all…" He stopped and closed his eyes. A moment of silence was had, "I'm starting to recall a man who looked… like me. We'd battle and discuss Pokémon, I think… The words "I like winning more than anything else" flashed through my mind just now…" Emmet. You wished to say his name. Why did you not? Ingo deserved to know of his twin brother.
"Funny that is… I have a friend who said things like that back in Unova. He was a Subway Boss, Emmet," you prodded his memory carefully. Ingo froze completely for a moment. He shook his head suddenly before continuing on. Though, you heard him mutter a 'Your combination is the best, perfect!' under his breath. Leaving it alone, you continued to walk with him.
He guided you through the highlands with ease, never straying too far from you. It was filled with mild conversation or a comfortable silence. Never once did he comment on your close proximity to him. In fact, a few times he even leaned into you or brushed his hand against yours. No longer that soft, spongy hands you could recall. His body seemed harder, too. Had he put on muscle? You could not imagine. Not your twig of a husband.
Stopping before a steep cliff, he looked up at it. Clearing his throat, he spoke again, "You would never expect to be able to climb such sheer cliffs as these, yes? But with Sneasler as an ally, it becomes the work of a moment. She is so at home on a cliff face, one might think she knew some secret— some hidden move…" Ingo seemed constantly on the verge of recollection but never able to truly climb over the cliff. He shook his head. You knew he was doubting himself. A longing overcame you to cup his cheeks and reassure him that he was doing everything perfectly right.
"What am I saying? Hidden moves? There are no such things in Hisui, surely… Yet I feel as though I was on the cusp of remembering something just now… Just who was I before I came to Hisui?" he questioned himself more so than you, "If you fell from the sky… you come from another world altogether, most likely. Perhaps a pokemon battle with you would jog this memory loose… Would you honor me with a battle, my dear?" The term of endearment made heat return to your cheeks. "Of course, Ingo," you grabbed one of your pokeballs, "I… want to thank you, for listening to me. You remind me so much of my husband…" Tears burned your eyes as you took form across from him.
Ingo stared at you, a look of hurt in his eyes. "I see. Well, all aboard, then! Machoke, prepare for departure!" he yelled out, volume more reminiscent of what you heard around the station. His Machoke was sent out, and you imitated him with your partner. A harsh battle soon followed. Ingo's skill as a trainer had not at all lessened from his memory loss. He kept you on your toes as he always had. It was something you loved about him, his competitive spirit. In the end, however, you came out victorious. His eyes closed, and a small smile came across his face.
You were introduced to Lady Sneasler before Ingo announced his departure. Part of you wished to beg for him to stay, but you knew that he would be unable to help you with whatever was to follow. An Electrode, huh? You could only hope they were not as fond of exploding as their modern counterparts.
Melli served as a deterrent once more before finally relenting from Adaman's scolding. Now, the arena was yours to battle. Carefully, you took a deep breath. Nearly dying for a fourth time, an exciting event to be sure. The next few minutes proved your wishes untrue and led to much more pain than necessary. You would bear it; you needed to. In order to get yourself, and Ingo, home, these Nobles needed to be calmed and the pokedex finished. A well-timed explosion caught you off-guard before everything returned to the void once more.
Your screams echoed through the mountain. Ingo's trek home stopped. Anxiety burst through his veins as his heart raced a speed which was surely unhealthy. His flute was played, and the mountain was scaled. His feet refused to stop moving until he observed your status with his own eyes. The Moonview Arena had a small crowd around it. Melli looked terrified while Adaman knelt beside something. Team Galaxy members, guards and medics stood around. Ingo shoved his way through.
A loud sob escaped him as he saw your injured state. Everyone backed away from the volume of his voice. Adaman moved from you to allow the Warden a place at your side. His memories crashed into him like a freight train. The shock and trauma of seeing you so bloodied and battered… Ingo was overcome with brutal emotions. His partner, his spouse… His lover. Your hand was grasped by the silver-haired man. Pleas for you to wake up, to not leave him racked through his system.
A guard had to drag him away from you as they rushed you back to Jublife Village. Barely could they remove him. The ring was now a heavy burden on his left hand. Melli stared at him as if were mad while Adaman asked, "… You were close to them, weren't you?"
"They are my spouse. I love them more than anything…" he managed to get out, "How could I forget someone so precious to me? I should have never let them come with me in that tunnel." The Diamond Clan members were confused. You would have cleared the caves of the highlands with or without Ingo, surely. Of course, Ingo was referring to how both of you ended up here. He should have made you stay in his office. There, you would have been safe from all the dangers posed by Hisui.
Irida heard his story with a heavy heart. She was not the type to normally force something, but her respect for the bond described by Ingo between you two had her demand that Kamado allow Ingo to see you as soon as the doctors would okay it. Hopefully this would stop Ingo's seemingly endless crying while he blames himself for every single thing that had happened to you since your arrival in Hisui.
He stays by your bedside, talking to you about anything. You do not ever respond, still unconscious. Everyone around the region is talking about the sad tale of reunion and immediate loss. His hand grasps yours, and your wedding ring is twirled around by him. Why had you not just told him? He would have believed you. From the moment his eyes had first landed on you, his heart filled with unconditional love. It confused him; the deep affection that had seemingly sprung from complete nowhere towards a stranger. Everything became worse the more that he passed at your side, and how you spoke of your homeland.
The warmth of your body at his side while he walked you through the cave was something that made him feel complete. A strange piece of him that had been missing but had finally been returned. Emmet. You even mentioned Emmet to him. Everything you did was an attempt to remind him of who he was. His lips press to your forehead as he gives you an unwilling goodbye.
Melli, strangely, apologised to him. It was in the purple-haired man's normal way of doing things, of course, but an apology was given. He appreciated the kindness. Lady Sneasler had taken to clinging to him and purring, hating that her dear Warden was so melancholic. He scratched his cheek and let her do as she pleased with him. A week passed before he knew it.
You woke up, exhausted and with your bones screaming in pain as you tried to push yourself up. A hand gently pushed you back down, forcing you to relax again. Alright, you had been absolutely bodied by Electrode. You would rest this time. "Sorry, doc… I thought I dodged in time," you joked, hoping Peselle would forgive you. "You most certainly did not dodge it 'in time'," a voice that was certainly not the pink-haired woman's own chastised you. Your head whipped over to see an extremely tired Ingo sitting beside you, hat laying on his lap while his coat hung off the back of the chair.
His eyes stared at you with a familiar stare that Emmet often got after doing something childish. This was no longer the amnesiac Ingo from before. "Uhh… hey, honey," you nervously spoke, not wanting your first moments of consciousness in who-knows-how-long to be one of Ingo's scolding rants. He could go on for literal hours. "How are you feeling, darling? Do you need a doctor?" Ingo asked, looking over you thoroughly. Oh, no. He had entered his mothering mode. The last time this happened you were banned from using knives over an accidental slice with dicing tomatoes.
"Ingo, hey, do you remember everything then? I don't think Warden Ingo would be calling me darling," you changed the subject before he could truly get started. Ingo gazed deeply into your eyes before gently grabbing your left hand. It was then brought to his lips where he pressed a kiss onto your ring. "I do. I know that you're my spouse, and that I am Subway Boss. Oh, and that I have a twin brother named Emmet," Ingo answered your question, "By the way, dear, do you mind not nearly dying? Or do I need to lock you away in my cabin? If this ever happens again, I do not believe my heart can take it."
You laughed before motioning him closer. He leaned in slowly. A flinched happened as you pulled him in for a long kiss. His eyes fluttered closed as did yours. It lasted much long than it should before he pulled away. A warm, calloused hand grabbed yours while rested his forehead to your own. "I love you more than I believe words can say," his voice was no more than a whisper. You smiled and tightened your hand around his. You had more reason to finish everything you started, but…
A little patience wouldn't hurt. No, not with Ingo at your side as support.

not a whole proper analysis post cause im too tired for it rn but quick thoughts on nemona's house as analyzed by me.
(disclaimer: we're running with the idea that this set up is meant to mean something, because we are actually allowed to go in her house unlike most other buildings despite it being easy to shut it off. suspend ur disbelief and say that everything in nemona's house is set that way for a reason)
Nemona's house is fairly symmetrical, save for the aysemtrical stained glass window design and the way the balcony flowers fall. Aesthetically symmentrical, not obsessive exact symetry.
Nemona's house features 4 house staff, two butlers and two maids. None of them have any dialouge referencing Nemona herself.
One talks about how they dust a lot and dont get how more keeps appearing, one talks about how the master and mistress are away at the moment, and the other two have simple bubble dialouge that just references cleaning
There are 6 pokemon in nemona's house, none of which are paldean introductions
3 pachirisu, gible, goomy, and chansey
I cannot find any reason for there to be a pachirsu in this house let alone 3. please help.
the gible and goomy both are pseudo legends and may mean to imply more about how nemona's family is powerful and rich. nemona also personally has a goomy she trains to fight you, but these are seperate pokemon. goomy is also notable as the weakest dragon pokemon (so says dex entry i think its rad)
chansey is heavily assosicated with medicine, curing illness and injury. it's also known for having good tasting eggs, but the paldea pokedex entires focus on the medical and speed aspects so I'll lean into the med thing.
where the pachrisu are at the table and the dragons together to the side, chansey is placed on the right hand side in the living room. On my inital playthrough i thought it was sigficant from a gameplay perspective (like a healing chansey or something) but no such thing. it is promenantly placed though, so i like to think it's relavent
(personal theory running that nemona's poor stamina / whatevers up with her arm is enough of a thing for there to be a live in chansey to help her out. even if not that bad, enough that her parents decided it was important, maybe for image reasons? rich family and all...)
there are 3 art pieces, an abstract greninja player doesn't recognize as a greninja, some fish player finds pretty, and two eevee playing entitled sibling love. the eevee depicted are male and female, and could potentiallyyyyyyy be really vague forshadowing about nemona's older sister. likely also just,,, rich people have fancy art.
there are doors on either end of the hall, unopenable. window blinds are drawn.
a long couch and two chairs in the centeral area on a large rug, coffee table in the middle. the entire house is rather white (the colour) though with some black cabinets
clicking on said cabniets nets you dialouge about how organized they are
connecting the above to nemona's really clean dorm room suggests that nemona's orderliness is something she gets from her family
there's a bookshelf? low shelf, books you can't interact with. not much else to say.
i need to review some of her early dialouge but nemona does not seem to have any strong opinions on her house, with the only notable thing being that she doesn't think it's notable enough to have the final rival battle there. i know its like,, the game wants u to fight in mezagosa, but also.... they did not have to offer that as a dialouge option, nor make nemona respond the way she did. you can take her statement that that beach isn;t all to interesting in her opinion at face value or not (a implication she'd like to avoid her house??? probably not??), either way.
exterior wise still fancy very pretty, the garden's got a circle thing going on, noticeably more pristine than players house. again contrasting player, the entire thing is much more organized but also... lacking customization and personality.
it does have a battle court in the back <3 and a beach. rich girlie.
that's my nemona house notes if anyone has anything to add please do.

The Rufflet Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Likewise it makes sense to introduce Pokemon’s first eagle in its first American region, and the fluffy down feather-covered noggin of Rufflet is successfully quite cute. Embodying the persona that America likes to brand itself with, Rufflet is said to be quite brave and stand up to stronger opponents, even when it really doesn’t have to and come out of the fight stronger, even if it loses.
That’s all well and good, and does reflect the whole Land of the Free and Home of the Brave thing that the good ol’ United States likes to brand itself with, though one Pokedex entry humorously states that Rufflet will often end up bawling and crying if it loses a fight. I don’t imagine this was like, commentary or something, it’s silly to think someone would try doing that through a one-off Pokedex description, but I find it funny anyways. It helps add character to Rufflet regardless, that under its courageous and brazen demeanor Rufflet’s still a little baby eaglet.
Tumblr media
Rufflet’s evolution, Braviary, is what you’d expect out of an American-themed bald eagle Pokemon, having a fluffy white head, and being colored red, white, and blue primarily. As an additional touch though, Braviary’s also got feathers distinctly placed around its face like a headdress. This, along with specific definition and thickness given to its legs, are reportedly sourced from Native American culture. It’s nice to see some attention given to the original culture of the land, so props to Braviary there.
One small thing is that I would’ve expected Rufflet and Braviary to be Fighting/Flying types, especially when their counterparts seen next in the Pokedex are Dark/Flying, but no, both are Normal/Flying. It’s not like, a knock against them or anything, just something I would’ve expected but didn’t turn out to be the case. Given how much the Pokedex talks about both Braviary fighting nobly for others’ protection, you think it would’ve been given the noble Fighting type, but no.
Tumblr media
Braviary would also be given a Hisuian form, given the Psychic/Flying type of all things, and now resembling a Steller’s sea eagle more than ‘murica’s bald eagle, fitting as it now lives in the ancient Japanese region of Hisui. I appreciate the inclusion of more marine birds in the game, and a big, telepathic eagle isn’t what I expected included amongst them, but still welcome with open arms. The Pokedex draws a further connection with the sea eagle by stating Hisuian Braviary uses its psychic powers to send shockwaves across bodies of water to stun fish, sending them to the water’s surface for easier capture.
As a design, Hisuian Braviary is pretty neat, with its new solely black and white plumage better resembling that of a seabird. The fiery psychic crest it’s got is pretty small and perhaps doesn’t do a great job excusing the inclusion of the new type, but it does have a cool, wispy appearance, and gives Braviary big, false eyespots, and that’s always fun. A simple, though effective regional form, if you’re asking me.
Score: 4/5
Tumblr media
Overall, nicely thematic birds.

I have received a vision while catching all the starters in the new Pokemon dlc and so it must be shared. It's time forrrrrr.....
WHICH POKEMON STARTERS EACH OF THE BALDURS GATE 3 CHARACTERS WOULD HAVE
I am basing this off the final evolutions of each starter, for example infernape instead of chimchar
1. Wyll: I believe in my heart of hearts this man would be best fucking friends with an empoleon. Not only would empoleons steal and water typing make it very effective as a shield for the week, especially against demons, but empoleons personality generally is very proud and upstanding. Like Wyll, it is proud but not prideful, not full of arrogance or superiority, but the pride of responsibility and leadership. I feel like they both represent something more than they are.
Also I think both Wyll and Empoleon are extremely cool and swag. Thats just me tho
Tumblr media
2. Lae'zel: I think Lae'zel would love a Feraligatr, and not because of any fucking jokes about what githyanki look like! I think she would deeply appreciate the ferocity and power that feraligatr has, with its incredible bite force and powerful legs. there isn't a lot in the pokedex about its personality, but I like to imagine it as a creature with a lot of loyalty, it sticks to those it has grown close to and will fight by their side until the bitter end. I think they would "spar" (read: play fight) often, with Lae'zel trying to give it more formal training, especially since totodile is known for having little control of its incredible jaw strength. I don;t think she would like that uncontrolled strength.
Tumblr media
3. Karlach: Karlach is the genesis of this stupid idea. I caught a tepig and thought, 'man, karlach would love an emboar' and I am fucking correct. Karlach obviously needed a fire type, and nothing suits her more perfectly than one of the Fire/Fighting types. Emboar not only fits her personality, but also her fighting stye, with its Black and white 2 pokedex entry saying "A flaring beard of fire is proof that it is fired up. It is adept at using many different moves." literally perfect for 'set my engine on fire and i am a master of killing diffderent varieties of demon' karlach. Not only that, but its original pokemon black entry has the line "It cares deeply about its friends." Emboar is Karlach the pokemon.
Tumblr media
4: Gale: This man needs a Delphox in his life fucking immedietly for a multitude of reasons. First of all, psychic types are genrally supposed to be smarter than your average person, so hopefully another companion like tara who would be able to keep with his smart ass. Speaking of his intelligence, we all know, despite this man's vast fucking intellect, he does not have the best foresight, making decisions that seem good in the short term, but not so great long term. Delphox can fix that! According to its X entry, it can literally see the future! let this man know if fucking with strange magic will go well or not. Also, its hidden ability is magician and its basically a witch. All in all, solid companion for Gale/
Tumblr media
5. Shadowheart: This one was a bit harder, but if we are talking about early game, still devoted to shar shadowheart, its got to be incineroar because it dont think any other starter matches incin for sheer drama value. Its literally and on fire cat that is also a pro wrestler. Also the secondary dark typing and edginess fits. If we are talking late game, Selunite shadowheart, Meganium. Maganium's whole bit is renewal and healing, giving life where it was previously taken away. The only starter that could be better at healing is primarina and that doesn't fit shadowheart as well as meganium does. I think the whole evolution line fits shadowheart pretty well as well. Starting with Chicorita, a barely sprouting flower, through Bayleef, where you can finally see the beginnings of the vibrant flower that is Meganium. I think that is somewhat mirrored in shadowhearts process of growing into herself throughout the acts, as she finds who she is without shar.
Tumblr media
6. Astarion: I think this one was the hardest for me, but I think it has to go to Decidueye. A ghost type archer whose signiture move is about taking control the battlefield by locking their opponents down? seems to fit with Astarion pretty well. The dex entry holds pretty true as well, stating that "Although (Decidueye is) basically cool and cautious, when it’s caught by surprise, it’s seized by panic." I am unsure if Decidueye is the perfect fit for astarion but the only other one I could imagine him with is greninja, but i dont think it fits as well as decidueye.
Tumblr media
Anyway! thats the main six. I might do additional ones later. The Shadowheart and Astarion ones are definitely the weakest, but I think they are still pretty good

Was reading your Raichu post, which prompted this giant message.
There actually is some evidence that regular animals still exist in the Pokemon world, just not as prominently. There's actually promo material of Pikachu and Ash walking past a lady walking her dog, for example. This suggest that, originally, regular animals and Pokemon were supposed to coexist.
Tumblr media
One possible explanation for why we don't see them is that they're less popular than owning Pokemon, and since wild animals generally avoid humans, trainers wouldn't encounter them, much.
Takashi Shudo, on the other hand, claims all real-world animals went extinct and were replaced by Pokemon (presumably by evolving into them...hopefully) but this seems to contradict all the stories of "Ancient" Pokemon, unless the series is thousands of years in the future, making us the Ancient Ones.
I actually dislike this explanation, because he also claims all the real-world animals that appeared were simply "animation mistakes" which makes zero sense in the case of the Ghastly turning into a mongoose, which was very obviously deliberately done, not a "mistake" like he claims.
Tumblr media
There also was a Pokemon book called "Bulbasaur's Trouble" where Bulbasaur had to find a frog to settle a dispute between two children...the frog was a main part of the plot, and thus can't be written off as a "mistake."
Furthermore, the inclusion of Pokemon like Arceus, who supposedly created the world, would imply that Pokemon have been around since the beginning...unless he either wasn't originally a Pokemon, or recreated the world after it was destroyed.
Takashi Shudo's word should also be taken with a grain of salt since he didn't create the series, he was mainly the chief writer for the anime adaptation, so while he was very influential and created Lugia, his word isn't exactly final, it's just one opinion that many of the other writers for the series may disagree with for all we know. As a matter of fact, as far as I can find, he's the ONLY one who spoke on the matter, so we don't know the other writer's opinion on the matter. Raichu's entries continuing to reference Indian Elephants could be a sign that others working on the games disagree with his interpretation. We still don't have Satoshi Tajiri's word on the matter, either.
Furthermore, while it is more common in Gen 1, you can still see real-world aquatic animals in the Sun and Moon anime such as starfish and various shellfish, all the anime features coral, barnacles are sometimes seen, and in the Black and White manga they ask if someone was scared by a spider...a regular spider.
Tumblr media
If you want to look more into it, Bulbapedia has an entire article listing all the times normal animals appeared in the franchise.
You sent this a year ago, and I’m just now publishing it because I’m only now deciding to finally return to this blog! In the year since you sent this in, though, a fascinating thing happened: Raichu’s dex entry in Legends Arceus seemingly retconned the old Indian elephant into Copperajah. Or, alternatively, an Indian elephant is just as easily knocked out by Raichu as Copperajah is, and Copperajah is simply a more useful barometer for Professor Laventon to use :U I think my stance at this point is that it’s undeniable that, early in the franchise, real animals were 100% intended to exist in the pokemon world, even in modern times. This tracks with early promotional material you showed above, and also the supplementary Gen 1 Pokedex book translated by Dr. Lava just a couple years ago, which not only includes references to real-life animals, but also theorizes that stuff like Vulpix are related to real-life foxes. Most outlandishly, Kabuto is claimed to be a common ancestor of hermit crabs and *turtles*. It’s a fascinating read and I highly recommend it! Link here: https://lavacutcontent.com/1996-creatures-pokedex-translation-1/ As for nowadays, though, I think it’s kept purposefully vague. Stuff like starfish are still shown, as are coral and some small insects, but most things that people will readily identify as a traditional “animal” are very strongly avoided. I suspect there’s not really an internal statement whether real-life animals do or don’t exist -- there’s just general orders not to show them, regardless of if they do or not. And invertebrates are just the best at slipping through the cracks. For myself, though, I agree with you -- if non-pokemon plants and fungi and rocks can exist, why not non-pokemon animals too? Anyways, with SV having recently unveiled its official artwork for its new pokemon, now’s as good as time as any to resume the reviews c:

Time to roast Pokemon Gen 5
I was really looking forward to playing Pokemon Black / White (Gen V) because everyone said it was the Pokemon gen with the best story.
Well.
The plot:
Evil Guy wants to take over the region.
Evil Guy is like "Hee hee I will trick people into releasing their Pokemon, then I'll easily take over with MY Pokemon."
Evil Guy tells everyone that keeping Pokemon in pokeballs is exploitative. He frames this in generic terms (no examples) and this is enough to make the crowd gawp and wonder aloud if Evil Guy is correct. They seem shocked by the idea the Pokemon could be exploited, to which I say . . . do these people ever watch the news? Like we have had four previous games full of pocket monster exploitation by bad guys. Anyway, Evil Guy urges everyone to release their Pokemon.
Evil Guy of course has an Evil Team. And since the Unova region is based on America, of course they are themed as . . . MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS!
Tumblr media
But don't worry, this team also has American theming such as Seven Sages, a couple ninjas, and a late game castle which erupts out of the earth.
It's all so generic. It's too bad, because America certainly has a history full of conflicts and villains. All right, there are some topics that I wouldn't trust Pokemon writers to address with enough sensitivity (like racism), but what about "Pinkertons versus unions"? Organized crime and crooked cops? The 1920s had a rash of fake spiritualists bilking people out of their money, what about a team based on them, with Psychic type Pokemon? With a Champion based on Harry Houdini, who loved unmasking fake psychics?
But no, we get store-brand Final Fantasy bullshit.
So anyway, Evil Guy's plan relies on people believing that he means well and is trustworthy. And therefore, Evil Team starts . . . committing a wide variety of crimes! In front of witnesses! They steal pokeballs from children, they kick Pokemon, etc.
"But maybe they still have plausible deniability," you might be thinking. "Maybe people won't believe kids." Well, maybe not, but they also commit crimes in front of Gym Leaders, the most trusted and powerful people in the Unova region. Like, one of the Gym Leaders has a museum, and instead of breaking in stealthily in the night, Team Evil just goes through the front door in broad daylight and steals an item while everyone stares at them.
Let's reflect on some other shortcomings of Evil Guy's plan which, to reiterate, is to guilt people into releasing their Pokemon.
First, if a Pokemon loves its owner, why would it leave just because it was released? Why wouldn't it continue to hang around, like the wild Rockruff that lived in Professor Kukui's house in the anime?
Second, if all Pokemon WOULD rather flee into the woods than stay with their human, then the bad guy is seemingly correct.
Third, what about the asshole trainers who don't care about their Pokemon's feelings? We know they're out there, there's a Pokemon move called Frustration.
Fourth, even if Evil Guy tricked everyone into releasing their Pokemon, there is nothing to stop the populace from catching NEW Pokemon the minute Evil Guy starts using his Pokemon to bully people. Feed Evil Guy's plan to a Trubbish and throw it in the bin, because it's garbage.
On a final note, when looking at the ethics of keeping Pokemon . . . Of COURSE it would be unethical to keep a lot of them irl! Giving children Fire type Pokemon would be grossly irresponsible. Litwick feeds off human souls, you shouldn't keep one. And the Yamask--introduced in THIS GAME--are described as "the spirits of people interred in graves. Each retains memories of its former life."
Now personally I love the weirder Pokedex entries and all the Pokemon with horrifying origins. I love that Pallosand shoots the bones of its victims from its arms and that Phantump is the ghost of a child who possessed a stump. However: Gen V made a beeline for the only rake in the yard and stepped on it. Most Pokemon games sidestep Poke-catching ethics; it's understood that this is all pretend, nothing is actually being captured, and therefore the player doesn't need to worry about such things.
But characters within Black & White bring this argument to the forefront, and without having any rebuttal. This is why the Evil Guy makes generic arguments like "If you don't release your Pokemon they can't fulfill their true potential", instead of telling the crowds "Catching a Yamask means you're enslaving a human ghost" or "Hands up anyone who caught your Pokemon by burning, paralyzing, or poisoning it."
So, yeah. Pokemon Black & White has the second worst story of a mainline Pokemon game. I haven't played Black 2 or White 2, maybe they were better.

Rambling about the Pokémon timeline
No flag edit today, folks. Last night I casually visited Bulbapedia and had my entire brain exploded, so I'm gonna make a rambly post about how Pokémon characters now have (somewhat) official birth years.
Putting it under the cut because it's like very long. Also, this post may be edited several times as I see new info.
For those unaware of the Pokémon timeline, here is the info that we knew for several years (if you want to know more, here's the Bulbapedia page I'm getting this from):
RBGY/FRLG and RSE/ORAS take place at the same time. (Note: ORAS is excluded from most of these timelines due to inconsistencies and multiverse stuff, but I'm keeping it here because why not.)
GSC/HGSS takes place three years after the above games, and at the same time as DPP/BDSP.
There is an unspecified time jump between the Johto/Sinnoh games and Black & White.
B2W2 takes place two years after BW, and at the same time as XY.
SM/USUM takes place two years after BW/XY.
LGPE's canonicity is under fierce debate due to timeline issues. In that game, Red/Leaf (or Green, whatever they're calling her now) and Blue have already completed their journeys, but a line of Sabrina's dialogue alludes to her meeting a strong Trainer in three years. This is an allusion to the Johto protagonist, implying that LGPE takes place not long after RGBY. However, Mina appears in that game. Her listed age in concept art is 3-6 years younger than she is in SM, which is long after the original Kanto games. (My personal headcanon to fix this: Lillie goes on an adventure in Kanto offscreen at the end of SM. However, Sabrina's dialogue heavily implies she's talking about Ethan/Kris/Lyra and not Lillie.)
Sword and Shield take place an unspecified amount of time after the Alola games (Silvally's SwSh Pokedex entry mentions there being many of that Pokémon, but at the end of SM there were only three in existence).
Legends: Arceus takes place no later than 300 years before DPP/BDSP.
For years, this was all we had, and the unspecified gap between the Johto-Sinnoh and Unova games was all we had. However, Bulbapedia found an obscure book from 1996 that offers a solution.
The Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia was a Japanese-only illustrated Pokémon guidebook published when Red & Green first came out. Though it's old, a lot of its information still fits with current Poke-canon. (For example, the book mentions Nidorans being able to breed but their later evolutions being unable, when the breeding mechanic still didn't exist.)
The book holds a lot of weird and interesting lore, but the tidbit relevant to the timeline mystery is that it states that Porygon was created one year before the events of Red & Green. This is relevant because Porygon's SM dex entry says that it was created 20 years ago. If we take that as an exact figure (which it might not be, but whatever, let's jump to conclusions), then that means SM takes place 19 years after RGBY/FRLG. Do some quick math, and you get that there are 12 years between the events in Johto-Sinnoh and BW. Hurrah!
However, if we're now taking this book as canon, there's something important we can't overlook. This book explicitly states that Red & Green take place in 1996, and Porygon was invented in 1995. This may not sound revolutionary, as games usually take place around the time they're published, but this means we now have year dates for the entire series:
Red/Leaf's journey and the Hoenn games take place in 1996
The Johto & Sinnoh games take place in 1999
Black & White take place in 2011
Black 2, White 2, X, and Y take place in 2013
The Alola games take place in 2015
At minimum, Sword & Shield take place in 2016
If we're using Mina's age as our indicator of canon, Let's Go takes place between 2009 and 2012
Legends Arceus takes place no earlier than 1699
Using this timeline, we can estimate the birth years and current ages of any Pokemon characters with confirmed ages. And I'm a timeline nerd who loves this kinda stuff, so Let's Hecking Go.
Red & Blue (and presumably Leaf) were said to be 11 in the Japanese manuals for the Gen I games and 10 in the European releases. This would mean they were born in 1985-86. If we count Let's Go as canon, then they were between the ages of 23 and 27 in those games. They look too old for that, but LG's art style makes everyone look way younger than they are, so who knows. And finally, in their appearances in Sun & Moon, our boys are 29-30 years old. We stan millennial kings. Imagine them hanging out with 11-year-old Hau and being confused about Vines
ORAS says in those Pokenav news report things [I forgot what they're called lol] that Brendan/May is 12 and Wally is 10. This means that MC was born in 1984 and would be 31 by the events of Sun & Moon. Wally should have been born in 1986 and would be 29...except he appears in the Alola Battle Tree still looking like a kid. Uh...maybe that was a past alternate universe him? A Hoopa did it???
There's another characters whose age is confirmed in ORAS: Steven Stone. He says in that game that he is 25. This would mean that he was born in 1971, and is 44 years old by Sun & Moon. Nintendo pls give us middle age steven
The Johto & Sinnoh characters have no specific canon ages, but the default age for Pokémon protags and rivals is 10-12, so we'll go with that. These kids were probably born between 1987 and '89, and would be between 26 and 28 by SM.
Hilbert/Hilda, Cheren, and Bianca are 14-15 years old during their adventure. They were born in 1997-98 and are at least 18-19 in modern canon. Our first Gen Z members of the cast.
N is 20 during BW. He was born in 1991 and would be at least 24 in current canon.
Nate/Rosa, Hugh, Serena/Calem, and the Kalos rivals have no specified age, but since the previous Unova protags were older, I'll calculate an age range of 10-15 for them. In that case, they were born between 1998-2003, and by Alolan times would be 12-17.
(Note: for a while there was a statement going around Bulbapedia that the Japanese versions of XY state that the protag is 17-18; however, that info has since been removed. I don't speak Japanese so I can't verify that, but if it's true, then the Kalos gang gets bumped up to 1995-6, and would be 19-20.)
Selene, Elio, Hau, and Lillie are canonically 11, so they were born in 2004. Gladion's exact age is unknown, but he's older than his sister, so I'd guess 2001-2003.
Due to SwSh's dubious place in the timeline and the protags/rivals not having canon ages, I'm just gonna leave that alone.
Chase/Elaine and Trace have no canon ages, but look to be on the younger side of 10-12; I'd guess they were born sometime from 1997-2002.
The protag of LA is estimated to be about 15. We don't know what world/time the protag comes from, so we can't say anything for them. However, if their rival is assumed to be the same age, then they must have been born about no later than 1684.
Edit: I found a few more characters with confirmed ages. Professor Birch is 35 in ORAS; this means he was born in 1961 and would be 54 by SM/USUM.
Professor Rowan is 60 during Lucas/Dawn's journey. He was born in 1939 and is 76 by the Alola games. Hopefully he's retired by now (although idk what kind of retirement fund system Sinnoh's government has. does the Pokémon world even have governments? it seems like 10-year-old children are allowed to wander with no supervision. but also there's a police force, so somebody has to be controlling them...what even IS the Pokémon world anyway?).
Cyrus is 27 during his shenanigans with Team Galactic (apparently he's a lot older than he looks!). He was born in 1972 and...well, I'm pretty sure he dies so this doesn't matter, but he would be 43. Also, Steven is older than Cyrus. Let that sink in.
Other random timeline stuff we can pin down with this (only including events that happened during times I can reasonably do math for):
The Kalos war and creation of the Ultimate Weapon happened 3000 years before XY, so roughly 987 Poke-BCE. (I assume they must have some Common Era equivalent. Does Jesus exist in the Pokémon world to create this distinction. Did Christ die for our Pokesins?)
The Darkest Day storm in Galar occurred a few years after that.
The Draconid peoples' homes were turned into Meteor Falls in roughly 4 CE.
In roughly 496 CE, the language used in the Ruins of Alph was created.
Rayquaza went Mega for the first time in 996.
Xerneas and Yveltal went dormant in 1213.
Bell Tower and Brass Tower were created in 1299.
Magearna was created in 1515.
Brass Tower burned to the ground and the legendary dogs were created in 1849. (As I'm typing this, I'm realizing that LA takes place before this and yet features Hisuian forms of the dogs. Maybe their Hisuian forms were the Pokémon they were before Ho-oh changed them?)
Professor Rowan's visit to Kanto was in 1995.
What is the point of this information? I dunno, really. Like I said, I'm a timeline nerd and I like to have all this stuff laid out. If you wanna use it for an actual practical purpose, feel free, but do credit me, because I think I'm the first person to lay all this out.

By word of mouth, Tooru learns that Challenger’s Cave is a place where trainers go to seek further strength. He still can’t beat Ushijima the way he is now, so that’s where he should go. The scent of wet rocks hits his nose right when he enters the cave. Aside from it being pitch black, it’s eerily quiet to the point where he can hear water dripping onto the ground from the stalactites. “I can’t see a thing in here.” Tooru squints, trying to distinguish any path in the darkness but to no avail. “Mareep, I need your help !” Tooru tosses a ball into the air and out his Mareep appears in a flash of white light. “Will you please light up the way ?” The electric sheep’s tail begins to glow, illuminating the area around them. “Thank you~! Let’s find some trainers to battle and get stronger. Then, we’ll definitely beat that Ushiwaka-chan !” Mareep ‘baa’s’ happily and bounds off deeper into the cave, with Tooru laughing and running right after it. Many trainer encounters later, he and Mareep decide to take a break next to an underground stream in the cave’s second level. They’ve made good progress, not losing a single match yet. He rests against his Pokemon’s wool coat as Mareep sips from the stream. Both are blissfully unaware of the large set of jaws creeping up from behind them.
Tumblr media
“?! N-Nani ??” Tooru jolts upright when Mareep lets out a loud screech, and he whips around to find the source of distress to his Pokemon. There standing right behind them is a cheeky-looking Mawile with a smirk over her face. The jaws that protrude from her head are clamped right over Mareep’s glowing tail. “Oh---that’s---!” He pulls out his Pokedex and holds it up.
Tumblr media
Dex entry: “Mawile, the Deceiver Pokemon. Attached to its head is a huge set of jaws formed by horns. It can chew through iron beams.” Tooru winces once the mechanical voices finishes. That must hurt !!  “Shake it off with an Electro Ball !” / “Maar !” Mareep, despite being in pain, forms a bright ball of electricity from the bulb of its tail, which in turn shocks the Mawile into releasing it. The move hits Mawile, sending her flying back several feet. She tries to retaliate, but her body seems to be frozen with bits of electricity flickering all over. Tooru’s quick to realize that she’s paralyzed from Mareep’s Static ability. Here’s his chance !

“Yosh !! Let’s go, Pokeball !!” [1/6 Pokemon caught: Mawile.]

Pokémon of the Week!
#87: Dewgong!
Tumblr media
Welcome, nerds, to Pokémon of the Week!
Where I, Sesh, generate a random Pokémon to highlight each week!
Last week, we highlighted the Hisuian variant of our slimy dragon friend, Goodra. If you wanna see that one, you can find it below:
This week, we are highlighting an OG water pupper with a warm heart of gold, Dewgong! It's a crying shame Dewgong and it's pre-evolved form Seel aren't in the latest Sword & Shield and Legends: Arceus games. But as it is one of the original 151 Pokémon, there is a good deal to cover and discuss!
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THIS GUD BOI
Let's dive in! PUN INTENDED.
~ORIGINS~
Dewgong debuted in Generation 1 as one of the original 151 Pokémon in Pokemon: Red & Blue for the GameBoy Color. It has since appeared as an obtainable Pokémon in every mainline entry except Sword & Shield and Legends: Arceus.
Dewgong is dual-typed at Water and Ice (a good combination, though it allows Fire attacks to have normal effect against it).
Dewgong last appeared in the anime as a Pokémon belonging to newer main character, Goh. Evidently, it's got a simping problem for female water-types.
Tumblr media
There's some debate about this adorable water-pupper's name...
As first glance, Dewgong could very well be inspired by real-life "dugongs", which are a family of marine mammals that include manatees. In the Red & Blue beta, Dewgong even had a different name: Manaty.
Below is a common dugong:
Tumblr media
Ehhh...not really...dis chonky boi's got too big a nosey to look like Dewgong. And it ain't got no white fur, either.
According to Bulbapedia, Dewgong shares more characteristics with harp seal pups than actual dugongs because of their "white fur and icy habitat." I'm inclined to agree.
Tumblr media
HNNNNNGH...
Anyway...
It's elongated body shares characteristics with fairy-tales of mermaids (which seals were often mistaken for mermaids by sailors of old).
It could also be inspired by beluga whales...again, due to the hue of it's fur and icy biome.
Tumblr media
And the horn on Dewgong's head?
Narwhals. Easy.
Narwhals, narwhals, swimmin' in the ocean...
Tumblr media
The OG Pokedex entries from generation 1 say is can swim at "8 knots". Now, I'm not a seafarer by any means, but I assume that's pretty dang fast? The anime seems to portray it as such.
The dex also says is gets..."frisky"...in cold water...
WELL THEN
Tumblr media
#he'sgoingatmachsimp
Other entries describe it as being able to swim very fast and very well in colder waters, saying it thrives in the colder climates and "snoozes" on icebergs.
Generation 3 dex entries make a callback to olden times when, as I mentioned above, sailors would often mistake seals and manatees for mermaids.
Generation 4 entries describe it's white coat as being a camouflage from predators, which tracks with most arctic species of seal.
In Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon's entries, it gets darker, saying it is straight-up a predator, liking to munch on Wishiwashi, a small fish Pokémon introduced in Generation 7.
Tumblr media
Oof...well, even the world of Pokémon has a circle of life. Bye bye, fishy! It's gonna be hard to avoid 8 KNOTS of solid blubber coming at ya!
Tumblr media
~DESIGN~
Here's Dewgong's latest official artwork:
Tumblr media
Quoted from Dewgong's biology section on Bulbapedia:
"Dewgong is a pinniped Pokémon with a snowy white, furry body. Its fur renders it virtually invisible in snowy conditions. Its face has two black eyes, a black nose, and two tusks extending from its upper jaw. It has a streamlined body with two front flippers and a long flowing tail. Even in extremely cold and ice-packed waters, its tail allows it to be a swift and agile swimmer at speeds of 8 knots. On top of its head is a sharp horn, which allows it to cut through the thickest ice floes.
It lives on icebergs adrift in frigid ocean waters. It thrives in lower temperatures, becoming increasingly more active the colder the weather. By storing thermal energy within its body, it is completely unharmed by even the most intense freezing weather. During daylight hours, it sleeps on bitterly cold ice or under shallow water. However, at night when the temperature drops, it becomes a hunter and searches for prey such as Wishiwashi. Following a meal, it sunbathes on the beach. This raises its body temperature and aids in digestion."
~ADVANTAGES~
Being a Water-type, you'll naturally want to use Dewgong against Fire, Rock, and Ground-types. It's dual Ice-typing can also be handy against those pesky Flying and Grass-types as well. This is an upgrade from it's pre-evolved form Seel, which is only a Water-type. It's typing saves it from Super Effective death more than Seel.
True to real-life manatees and seals having a layer of blubber and fat to keep them warm, Dewgong's highest base state is Special Defense (closely followed by HP). Field Dewgong against Pokémon that use special attacks.
If your Dewgong has the "Thick Fat" ability (yeesh, what a name), any attacks against you that are Fire or Ice-type deal half the damage they normally would.
If your Dewgong has the "Hydration" ability (like our friend Goodra), any status conditions it has will heal if it is raining.
It's hidden ability, "Ice Body", heals 1/16 of damage against Dewgong if it is hailing at the end of each turn of battle.
Handy to have around as an HM user if you are playing one of the older games (i.e. learning moves to use outside of battle like Surf, Waterfall, and Dive).
IT'S CUTE AS HECC
~DISADVANTAGES~
AVOID THE CHU! Do not field against Electric-types.
No Grass-types, either.
As I mentioned, Fire-types now have normal effect against it instead of less effectiveness.
It's base states as a whole are not impressive. None of them break 100. That's not very desireable in a final-form Pokémon like Dewgong. Don't be thinking your Dewgong will outspeed or overpower anything decently fast or strong by default without some Hyper Training.
~HOW TO OBTAIN~
Buckle up, nerds. Since this Pokemon goes all the way back to the first generation, this might take a while:
In the original Red & Blue versions, you can catch a Dewgong while surfing in the Seafoam Islands, or by catching a Seel and leveling it up to level 34. You can also trade a Growlithe for a Dewgong with an NPC at the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island.
Tumblr media
In Gold & Silver versions, the only way to obtain Dewgong is to evolve a Seel. They are unobtainable in the wild.
In the Gen 1 remakes FireRed & LeafGreen, Dewgong can be obtained in the Seafoam Islands (as before) and Icefall Cave. Dewgong is in Ruby & Sapphire, but only by trading with FireRed & LeafGreen versions.
Dewgong is a version exclusive Pokémon in Generation 4, being available in Diamond, but not Pearl. Dewgong can be found in the postgame while surfing on Routes 226 and 230.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Platinum version, wild Dewgong can be found while traversing Victory Road.
In the Gen 2 remakes HeartGold & SoulSilver, wild Dewgong can be found, again, while surfing in the Seafoam Islands.
In Black & White, wild Dewgong can be find while surfing in rippling water in the Giant Chasm. In Black 2 & White 2, Dewgong can also be found in rippling water in Seaside Cave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In X & Y versions, Dewgong is only obtainable via an Ice Friend Safari.
In the Gen 3 remakes Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, Dewgong can be found postgame in the Shoal Cave as a hidden Pokemon that needs to be searched for in rippling water.
Tumblr media
It is unobtainable in the wild in Sun & Moon. However, it is obtainable in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon by evolving Seel, which can be found in Seaward Cave.
Tumblr media
Once more, in the somewhat unneeded Let's Go! Pikachu & Eevee games, it can be found while surfing in the Seafoam Islands.
As stated above, Dewgong is not available in any form in Sword & Shield. #dexitvictim
Dewgong is available in the Gen 4 remake Brilliant Diamond, like Diamond before it, in the same locations postgame (Routes 226 & 230). In addition, it can also be found in Icy biomes in the Grand Underground postgame.
Dewgong is not obtainable in Legends: Arceus.
~COOL DEWGONG FANART~
There's some beautiful pieces of Dewgong out there that really capture this water pupper's natural beauty and inclination toward Arctic climates! Here are a couple:
Tumblr media
Beautiful. No wonder sailors mistook them for mermaids once upon a time.
Tumblr media
A bunch of Dewgong and Seel together!
Tumblr media
A more realistic Dewgong that actually looks pretty good.
Tumblr media
A What If...? Dewgong that has a mega form! Love it.
Tumblr media
OG Pokegirl Misty hanging out with a bunch of OG water-types, including a Seel and a Dewgong!
~CONCLUSION~
Like with Goodra, I've never had a Dewgong on my team. But BOY have I had a hard time taking down those belonging to NPCs on my journeys. It's not the most powerful Pokémon around, but it's handy for water-based HM moves and it's added ice-typing is certainly handy as well. It's also a beautiful and realistic Pokémon; a very good reminder of some of the amazing creatures we have out there in the real world.
Overall, a decent OG 'mon!
Let me know your thoughts on Dewgong! Or if any of you have ever used one!
Until next time! See you next week for a real flappy apple!

Note
driffloon for pkmn review? theyre my fav! (altho trubbish is my second fav, so mind my taste)
Tumblr media
If you have bad taste then I have even worse taste, because I absolutely love the Drifloon line.
It's actually kind of surprising that it took until Gen 4 to give us a proper balloon Pokemon, considering there was a scrapped idea for one as early as the Red/Green beta (Jigglypuff kind of counts, but I mean something that is literally a balloon rather than a mammal). Regardless, the balloon we did finally get is perfect in just about every way.
Conceptually, the idea of an eerie balloon that floats around at night, luring off children to drag them into the afterlife is terrifying and makes for a great concept (even upstaging Hypno in the horror department, on the grounds of it actually killing the kids it lures away instead of just eating their dreams. USUM even had a quest wherein it's implied that a Drifloon killed both a child and her Hypno to "make friends" with her, which is just all kinds of messed up).
On the plus side, it can't drag heavy kids off and gets pulled around by them instead, which is hilariously endearing.
Tumblr media
Visually, the purple is quite fitting for a ghost-type, and the yellow accents make the design pop nicely (no pun intended). The little hearts at the ends of the strings are adorable, serving as weights (I also like the way it has two strings in general, allowing them to function a bit like hands).
I also really like the way the mouth is done; it's actually a small circle in the middle of the X. In other words, it's a hole that got patched over. How perfect is that?
Tumblr media
The only thing I can nitpick here is that the white on top of the head is... like, it's not bad, but part of me questions if its really needed. Still, I can get wanting something to break up the form there and the way it looks like a cloud is fun, so I'm not going to complain too much.
Also, final side note: Drifloon has what I consider to be the scariest Pokedex entry, ever, in the form of this tidbit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, Drifblim is just as good as Drifloon, keeping all the good aspects of it while making it look more advanced. Despite the name, it's much less based off a blimp than a hot-air balloon, complete with a "basket" of sorts, a nice rounded pattern at the base, and lines going up the body. I'm not entirely sure what those four limbs are based off of (saddlebags, maybe?), but they work well and are a nice departure from Drifloon's strings.
Visually, outside of what I said about the white cloud at the top previously, I really don't have any complaints. I guess you don't really need the red--the eyes could've stayed black and the bottom could've been yellow--but it helps make it feel more grand compared to Drifloon, so I don't think it's bad that it's there. Other than that, it's great.
Also, I really like this 'dex entry, which is sweet and poetic instead of horrifying like Drifloon's:
Tumblr media
So yeah, overall, these balloons are perfect. Perfect designs, perfect lore, perfect 'dex entries, perfect concepts. A++, would let it steal my child.
