Pokemon Gold and Silver; best of type.
Best of type for Pokemon Generation 2. As always, this list is based only on pokemon I like the best. Battle viability sometimes plays a part in my selection, and sometimes it doesn’t.
Consisting primarily of pokemon introduced in this specific generation, we’re now covering Gold and Silver.
We’ll start with Dark and Steel, since these types were first introduced in Gen 2.
Dark
Best dark type in Gen 2 has to go to Houndoom. I’M SORRY, UMBREON! FORGIVE MEEEEEE! :’(
It only had one real competitor back then, so what am I gonna do? Bump it over to fire? Nah.
Steel
Best original steel type would go to Scyther’s new evolution, Scizor if trade evolutions weren’t bullshit and also other reasons that will become apparent later in the list.
Best of Steel has to go to Skarmory. In a perfect world, Eevee’s steel type evolution...Steeleon? Ironeon? Metaleon? would take the top spot.
Normal
Best of type for Gen 2. It has to go to Miltank. Legendary for its power as the ace pokemon for Goldenrod gym leader Whitney, Miltank does what it wants and damn the haters.
Thought you was hot shit bringing a ghost type to a Normal type gym but then Miltank hits you with a Rollout and proceeded to ruin your life.
Fire
Best new fire type for Gen 2. It’s gotta go to Entei, right? I mean, come on! Who else am I gonna give it to. Houndoom? He’s already on the list!
Water
Best water type has to be Feraligatr. Although he can’t be a gator, because character limitations in those days where a thing, he’ll always be a gator in my heart.
Electric
Best new electric type is Ampharos. The only contender was Raikou, but Idunno. Ampharos was always useful. Who else would it go to? Pichu? Hell no.
Grass
Grass types in Gen 2 were nothing to write home about, although Sunkern had the lowest base stat total of any pokemon for a good long while. Best grass type goes to Meganium, the final form of the grass starter.
Ice
Again, not much to say about ice types in Gen 2. At least Sneasel gets to take the top spot since it wasn’t in sniffing distance of Dark.
Fighting
Best new fighting type goes to Heracross. This was a tough one because I wanted Bug to go to Heracross, but the alternative was friggin’ Hitmontop. So it goes.
Poison
Although it’s practically a default choice, Crobat is a cool pokemon so it definitely deserves new Best of Poison.
Ground
Best new Ground type for Gen 2 was none other than Quagsire. Just quaggin’ it. Doin’ his thing.
Flying
Best flying type is a tough one, because Skarmory and Crobat are already on the list and the rest are garbage. I’ll give it to Ho-oh. Just because it’s the legendary pokemon that my main man Ash Ketchum saw when he was first starting out on his journey.
Psychic
Best new psychic goes to Espeon. YES! FINALLY AN EEVEELUTION MADE THE LIST! WOOOO!
Bug
Well, not to say that Scizor isn’t a cool pokemon because it is, but this choice was mainly on account of not wanting Hitmontop to take best of Fighting. It is what it is. Best new Bug type is Scizor. And despite my hatred for trade evolution, I must grudgingly award Scizor with Best of Gen.
Rock
Best of Rock. No question. It goes to Tyranitar.
Ghost
Best new ghost type is the only new ghost type. Misdreavous takes the top spot by default.
Dragon
Best new dragon type. Only new dragon type. Enjoy your crown, Kingdra.
Fairy
Sorry, Fairy type didn’t exist in Gen 2. Maybe next time.
