Three Rocket goons stand at the top of the Lavender Town Pokemon Tower, hassling Mr. Fuji. They can hear the screams and cries of ghosts from under them, but they don't understand why the tower keeps shaking. A shadow passes over them, and they hear footsteps on the stairs. The first of the three looks to see Red, fire in his eyes. They can't possibly know that he just beat their leader in team combat. Yet here he is. He doesn't even have a sylph scope in his hand, the ghost of Marowak was appeased by a doll he bought from Celadon Department Store.

"Yous ain't gettin' no further, chump!" says the first, throwing out his pokeball. The beating of wings accompanies the clack of the ball hitting the ground, but... It doesn't seem like there's anything coming out of that pokeball. "I- Huh?" He looks around, and then eventually up. Just in time to see the lifeless body of his Ratata dropped from the rafters above them. Something great, dark, and winged is there.

Red doesn't even pay attention to the Rocket goons. He simply walks past them, towards Mr. Fuji. In turn, each of them attempts to bring forth their pokemon. In turn, each of them is annihilated before it can even do anything. One of them has the forethought to already be crying out a move when the ball leaves his hand. "Raticate! Quick attack! You're our only hope!"

Blood. For a moment, lightning flashes outside the tower and illuminates a great brown bird. A beak long as a saber, and a madness in its eyes that shakes the Rockets to their core. In the next moment, a pair of wet thumps are heard as the two halves of that offending Raticate slide to a stop on either side of its trainer. The victorious screeching caw of the fearow drowns out the sound of their feet as the goons high tail it back towards a headquarters that is currently still on fire from the very trainer they're running from.

Its job done, Javelin allows itself to return to its pokeball to rest. And wait.

"Yes and No it depends on who the trainer is and whether they choose to name their Pokémon

If you think a hermit would name their Pokémon they probably would! But they won’t call that name out in battle because their gym leaders (well most of them are anyways) and so challengers have to learn from them! That includes even small details such as new Pokémon species names that trainers might not have encountered before hence the no names for Gym leaders pokemon in battles.

For example Gem’s pokemon all have names she picked out! And she uses those names in battle! But she’s a trainer so it’s different for her then gym leaders who are new trainers teachers in a sense.

I’m going to be extra kind and say that I do have Gem’s Pokémon’s names already picked out and so I will give them here to you as a bonus for being the first ask her pokemons names are Cherrie, Winnie, Storm, Sunny, Ender and then … Wormie ;)

take a guess on which Pokémon those names belong to because I’m not being kind enough to spoil the surprise of Gem’s eventual full team lineup ;P

As for Pearl, we’ll she has Tilly but Pearl takes a little longer to decide on names for her pokemon she really has to sit and think about it, so they might not gain names for a little while but she does intend to name all her Pokémon!

kieran's probably having the weirdest day ever lol

also some notes on how his team did!

- crispin was surprisingly a challenge! politoed and talonflame were pretty much fighting over the weather like that one scene in sleeping beauty where the fairies fight over aurora's dress color (and dragonite kinda relied on the rain so i had no choice lol)

- every other E4 member was pretty easy, including lacey, despite his two dragon types and lack of steel/poison coverage minus gyro ball

- politoed did extremely well! i didn't really expect that since i always two-shot kieran's. however, i did build it with lots of bulk + leftovers since i didn't have a wacan nor a sitrus berry

- hydrapple is SUCH A TANK! who needs a speed stat if you can take so many hits with minimal damage? i know the tera fighting is more of a reflection of his character, but if he used tera steel he would do much better

- the actual battle itself against kieran was pretty even! but i guess that's obvious since we had the exact same lineup (i didn't even do switch outs or sending out pokemon based on type advantage, i just went down the same order as him). however, even though i started the league with the same levels as him, they ended up much higher in the end which was ultimately the reason i won.

- i also had a strict no-healing items rule, just to be fair

my thoughts? kieran's team is pretty solid and he is actually capable of beating the league! with a few tweaks, he'll be golden! and he should also hunt for a shiny grimmsnarl because i can't get over how fucking cool it is... it's in a dream ball too and i really love the pink smoke bomb effect. his name is asmodeus and he's my fav

I have two other Pokemon suggestions too!

First one would be a Klinklang, in Pokemon BW N mentions how much he loves Chargestone Cave, and what can be found in Chargestone Cave? Klinks! Not only that but he also uses one in his bw team, it just seems like the type of Pokemon he'd love, maybe it has to do with the way it moves idk.

The other one would be Bisharp/Kingambit (Not sure if you'd want just exclusively Unova found Pokemon) but that might be slightly on the nose? Bisharps are obviously Bishops in chess but Kingambits being the evolution of Bisharps are Kings in chess, but like I said it's slightly too much on the nose.

Kinklang is such a good idea, y'know with him liking mechanical stuff and all of that. Throwing that guy on!

I think that I might not include Bisharp/Kingambit since I feel like that's more of a Team Plasma Pokémon, especially with the Shadow Triad. I believe they all own Bisharps if I'm not mistaken, and personally that makes more thematic sense to me w/ the Shadow Triad being bishops & Ghetsis being their King.

I'm gonna keep Sawsbuck on the team purely for aesthetic purposes lol, and cause he interacts with one in the anime. He probably rides Sawsbuck through the woods whenever he wants to be out in nature alone.

And just like that, I'm done with Moon.

I was worried that I'd end up disliking this on a replay but it was much better than I'd remembered. Honestly one of my favourite games in the series.

These are still some of the best characters in the series, it has one of the best batches of new Pokemon they ever introduced, and you have a great set of team options throughout the game without it ever feeling like they're giving you too many options. I feel like the last couple entries have been maybe a bit too generous with the Pokemon you can get early on plus giving you enough XP to easily raise multiple teams, making each playthrough seem kind of indistinct. This one hits the perfect balance.

The region looks goddamn gorgeous and I love the aesthetic of these 3D models, there's a good balance between detail in the models and pixellated textures that have a real low-poly charm to them.

And this is still probably the best plot in the series, barring maybe Scarlet and Violet's.

I do have one big criticism though, and that's that this game is overwhelmingly handholdy. I think a lot of the changes to the formula were a good idea, but incorproating a strict linear plot with exactly one quest marker at a time makes this really feel like you aren't on your own journey, you're being guided through a series of preset objectives. So many roadblocks in this feel aggressively guiding, like the game is saying "this is NOT the way to progress the story, go follow your quest marker NOW", and there are very few opportunities to go off the beaten path. Additionally, while I do like the cutscenes, there are way too many of them. You can hardly enter anywhere new in this game without a cutscene happening.

With that being said, I still had a fantastic time here. And in fairness, Sword and Shield had similar problems outside of the Wild Areas despite barely even having a plot.

Glad I'm putting some good distance between this and Ultra Moon, though. Probably the worst pair of games to play through back to back given how little freedom there is in the experience. I'll be playing through the Violet DLC whenever I can afford it, but the other games in my immediate replay lineup are physical copies on old hardware that I can't screenshot on. Once we get back to the 3DS era though I'll probably liveblog Alpha Sapphire and Ultra Moon as well.

...Though I'm not really done with this liveblog yet, since Moon has (holy shit) an actual substantial postgame! Stay tuned.

So, about that gathering of students real quick.

What I find interesting about this group of kids is who Kaito included. Apparently he's keeping a very open mind.

This group of students was summoned based on who he thinks would be most useful to fight the Monokumas with. These six are Kaito's team of Pokemon that he's going to send against the ravenous teddy bear horde.

Some of these choices make sense. Gonta and Tenko, naturally. Maki and Rantaro are a bit more questionable since he doesn't know their secrets, but he gets their tough vibe. That's literally the reason.

Once glance at Maki and Kaito was just like, "Who cares what her Talent is, that is a person who can fuck some people up, and definitely has." And he's right. He is absolutely right. You feel it. I feel it. We all feel it. Maki is visibly dangerous.

She has the cold stare and emotional distance of a woman with blood on her hands. She should be first pick for the Dangan Avengers.

But then we have... Angie and Himiko. Just in case their divine intervention and magic powers are real. That's hilarious.

Kaito looked at Himiko like, "Hmm, might be Gandalf, might be dead weight. Let's ROLL those dice!" Fitting, given what we'll later see about Kaito and gambling. He's betting it all on this horse!

Unfortunately, Kaito's instincts have led him astray, as evidenced by a couple notable omissions. Convicted and incredibly impressive mass-murderer Ryoma Hoshi and the Ultimate Supreme Master of Anything You Could Possibly Require Kirumi Tojo are missing from his lineup.
