since y'all liked the Olga Tokarczuk quote about winter, you may be interested to know that the book it's from (Prowadź swój pług przez kości umarłych/Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead) was adapted into a Polish-language movie by director Agnieszka Holland. It's called Pokot (English: Spoor), and it's faithful to that same atmospheric winter mood you felt when you read the Tokarczuk quote.
tw dead bodies, human and animal
the story itself is an ecological thriller with a feminist take on the relationship of humans with nature and with each other.
Though this movie is dark and cold and even spooky, it has one of my personal favorite comedic scenes that lives rent-free in my mind, which features the two female leads visiting their friend's apartment for the first time. As a gift, they bring him a **very large** very sympathetic and cute and gaudy stuffed animal stork... only to find that he is a minimalist who owns almost no belongings and knows the exact number of the absolute essentials he does own... +1 giant stork.

West Pokot Maize Farmers Receive Seeds Donations As Planting Season Kicks Off
Small scale maize farmers in parts of West Pokot County have appealed to the county government to consider increasing maize seed donations owing to the increased number of households in need of free farm inputs.
While receiving maize seeds donated by the county government at Cheptuya Market in West Pokot Sub County over the weekend, the farmers said that due to the population increase, the…

Ah I'll be honest with you about the Tokarczuk book, I read it on absolute accident because I stumbled into it a Biedronka. It intrigued me because it wasn't the usual kind of book you find in that shop. I had no idea Dom Dzienny was recomended as first one and I haven't read it yet. I wonder how this relates to Prowadź Swój Pług... having a movie adaptation while Dom Dzienny doesn't.
I do love these covers of Witcher. Unfortunately I don't have the full set of the good looking Polish edition, but I'm happy to report the other one has a game version Vernon on Lady of the Lake cover.
I also have the Portuguese version of Baptism of Fire and it looks really good too!
I mean it was recommended by a bookstore assistent but I trust his opinion, so far he has never failed me with his recs. What he said was that Dom Dzienny was good but Prowadź Swój Pług was absolutely fantastic and because of that he felt that he didn't enjoy Dom Dzienny as much as he could have. But ofc those are opinions.
Oh? Prowadź Swój Pług has a movie adaptation? Not made by hollywood? Let me just grab my letterboxd and put it in my list. Apparently it's under the name Pokot and ah directed by Agnieszka Holland, marvelous.
Well then. I read the magic name and now my attention is indeed fully piqued. Google is being very unkind to me and is not showing me what I want to see in the search bar, do you have any pics so that I can witness such magnificent, genius artistic choice? Whoever decided to create such cover is a brave visionary because although he does not appear in the books it in fact a crime to not allow him to be featured on a cover.
Yes the portuguese cover of baptism of fire is my favourite as well along with last wish and season of storms. Too bad I cannot say the same for the 2nd part of the lady of the lake, i really dislike how they decided to design ciri there especially when they did a good job on tower of the swallow. but i digress, i have been thinking that i would like to read the books in english as well but now am very much keen on getting a polish copy of lady of the lake as well. for no reason at all obviously :)

The pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing inequalities in accessing quality education in Kenya, especially among vulnerable students due to economic challenges and discrimination. Art Kids Foundation (@artkidsfoundationkenya) is a non-profit organization supporting students in Kibera and girls escaping child marriage and female genital mutilation in Kajiado and West Pokot counties in Kenya. Through the Young Minds Scholarship Program, Art Kids offers full-tuition scholarships to bright students to continue their studies at the high school/university level and achieve their full potential. To these youth, this is a life-changing opportunity that may have otherwise been impossible to access. Due to financial hardship, many students in Kenya don't complete their secondary education. For girls in areas where female genital mutilation is still practised, this can mean early marriage, teenage pregnancy and severe injury that can be deadly. I have donated three of my images as prints to support the fundraising efforts and help change the lives of these students striving to reshape their lives. 100% of the proceeds of each print sale goes to the scholarship program. Photo: In the morning, children walk along railroad tracks in Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya, on their way to school. To buy a print or to support the cause, check the link on my bio.
