BIG SHOT polaroid | e.m.

Pairing: Eddie Munson x Fem reader

Polaroid Manipulation Guide V2.0

Manipulating Color Polaroids:

Materials Used: hair dryer for heating up image although something like an incandescent light bulb works as well, tools to manipulate the image (I find myself using the bottom of the body of a craft knife/"x-acto" a lot, as well as clay tools), and Polaroid photos.

When manipulating a color Polaroid I have noticed that the manipulations tend to work the best around an hour to a few after taking the photo, as it allows for the image to be fairly manipulable and does not cause what I tend to refer to as a "ghosting" effect with the image manipulation.

While manipulating a photo there are a few things I do, I heat the Polaroid and when using a hair dryer I find heating evenly over the Polaroid for about 15 to 20 seconds is fine on high heat while keeping around one to two inches above the photo works fine. I have also used a 40W incandescent light bulb to heat up a Polaroid and when I did that I noticed that it did not seem to be as good of a method of heating. After heating the image I take whatever tool I am using and hold it like I would a pencil or pen and press down and move the photographic emulsion. I find it hard to describe the force to use, but it is not hard and you will have to sort of play around with it until you get a good feel for it. Something else of note is that to get more extreme distortions of the image you will have to go over the emulsion multiple times in the same direction.

Manipulating Black and White Polaroids:

Materials Used: The same materials are required to manipulate black and white Polaroids as color Polaroids.

When manipulating a black and white Polaroid I have found manipulations to work the best at least an hour after the photo is taken and up to three days after the photo has developed. Black and white photos do not seem to manipulate well right after the photo develops and manipulating at that time will result on a sort of breakdown of the image emulsion.

While manipulating a black and white photo I do the same process of heating the image up and manipulating it. The only difference that I have noticed with regard to black and white Polaroids is that it seems easier to do more extreme manipulations.

While experimenting with different things to do to attempt and manipulate Polaroids I had taken I looked online to find what had been written about Polaroid manipulation and if anything about modern Polaroid manipulation had been written. I did not find anything written about manipulating modern Polaroid photos, but I found a guide to SX-70 manipulations that I found to be useful in terms of figuring out that I should attempt to heat up my Polaroids to help aid in manipulability. This guide can be found on http://www.polanoid.net/ in the "Tools" section and is titled "Polaroid SX-70 Manipulations."
