Despite using dogs for more than a century, law enforcement agencies in the U.S. do not keep comprehensive or reliable data to support claims that police dogs reduce crime or make anyone safer. Indeed, there is debate about how many K9s, or police dogs, there are, how often they’re used, and who they’re being used against. In early 2023, when four researchers published a paper, titled “De-fanged,” in the Journal of Experimental Criminology, the group stated they were unaware of any existing “quantitative evaluation of the claimed benefits of K9s in policing.” Led by Ian T. Adams, a former canine officer who is now an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina, the authors explained, “There is precious little empirical evidence to support any claims, whether by proponents or critics of police K9 programs.”

This is such a hyper specific ask but other therians, can you tag your police dogs? Most of the time they are just posted under "working dog" and I'll be honest, I Hate seeing cop dogs. They are used for almost nothing except violence and the history of when and why they started to be used is actually horrorifying.

Tag your police dogs, I have the tag blocked for a reason and I feel bad blocking people for something as Lil as this but idk I've seen an influx on cop dog posts.

They are incredibly triggering (to me and my general circle at least) to PoC and specifically Black folks. Police dogs have never been a cool or fun thing to our communities. /nm /srs

I love this post and I'm glad people are talking about the gross framing of these weapons (intended for use on civilians!!) as dogs, as many people pointed out they are not dogs and are not friends.

Something else though, police dogs are also not your friends. It's tempting as an animal lover to say "aw doggy!" whenever a fluffy German shepherd comes around, but a police dog is trained to bite, tear, and most of all hold on to a civilian.

Have you ever seen a dog attack? It can be easy to forget a big dog is 100lbs of muscle with the natural instinct to kill. A dog will defend it's owner with no sense of justice or morality outside of pack bonding. A dog has sharp hooked teeth for biting into flesh and tearing out chunks. A German shepherd has an average bite pressure of over 200 pounds per square inch, enough to break bones. A well trained dog knows to go for the face and neck, to hurt or kill a person in order to protect itself.

The state does not officially track police dog maulings, but the Marshal Project has been putting together a horrifying report to finally paint a picture of the problem.

At least three people have died needlessly from dog attacks.

As you might guess, this violence is often directed at black Americans, in fact there is a deep history of dogs bred to track down enslaved people that can still be felt in the racial skew of K9 usage in the USA.

Before I see responses about the poor dogs or people making excuses for police dogs, think about why you feel that way. Cops (esp in the USA) use dogs in propaganda constantly. They put cute puppies up on their sites, they make dog calendars. They know that we love dogs and they hide behind them because the reality of police work is bland state sponsored violence and there's nothing in it that is cute or funny.

My point is, as much as we want to think of dogs as our best friends, all cops are bastards and that includes police dogs. Get comfortable with looking for K9 units if you see someone pulled over. Get comfortable watching out for police dogs at protests and public places.

You may have to kill a dog someday, and you need to prepare for that in this violent world.

Some may question why a Golden Retriever was recruited as a K9 dog for the police but their purpose is actually important. Golden Retrievers aren’t as intimidating compared to German Shepards and are used for security at places like sport events or concerts. They can also be therapy dogs within law enforcement.
