So many to choose from ahh! But I need to know more about the drag queen au 👀
I'm so glad you asked because I'm so excited for this one.
This one was actually born out of @heartstringsduet sending an ask for a song inspired ask meme and the song that she chose ended up being Andrew in Drag by The Magnetic Fields (one of my favorite songs)
Essentially, Carlos sees Ilona Star one night, believes she's the most beautiful woman he's ever seen and spends a good time pining after her, despite the fact she both exist.
He ends up meeting TK, an EMT by day, who might also just be a drag queen by night. He also just might be Ilona Star, but he doesn't want Caros to find out. Here's a snippet:
“Hey, what do I always say?” Nancy asks, tilting TK’s head up. His indigo tinted lids play perfect compliment to his honey red auburn wig. “Leave ‘em wanting more?” TK guesses, his lips becoming a perfect circle of carmine lip stain as he says the last word of the statement. “Exactly,” Nancy plucks a strand of burgundy red hair from TK’s wig that’s standing at attention and gently pushes it behind his ear. After, she steps back and displays her full garb, ruby red heart-shaped pasties partnered with rich red lingerie. “Nancy Gillian fixes hearts,” Her statement is followed by a provocative smile. “Polly Amory breaks them.”
ask me about my wips!

Quick Thoughts - The Phantom of the Opera - February 4, 2023 - Matinee
The main trio was Ben Crawford, Julia Udine and John Riddle.
I think I’ve reached a point when I am so familiar with this trio’s acting choices, my brain just started focussing on very niche and random things, so this review is just going to be an incredibly haphazard collection of thoughts.
Joseph DePietro was on as M. Reyer and is it possible that I’ve found my new favorite Reyer? He was so incredibly sassy but it was clear that he was very good at his job, which is Reyer 101. I know I’m ride or die for Jim Weitzer’s Reyer, but DePietro is giving him a run for his money.
This is the third (or is it second?) time I’ve seen Ted Keegan as Piangi. I can barely wrap my brain around it because Keegan’s Phantom and his Piangi give off very different energies but are also somewhat similar? His Piangi is very earnest and a little goofy.
Keegan’s Piangi is first and foremost, Carlotta’s number 1 fan. The first time Keegan’s Piangi met Carlotta, he cried and would later write in his diary, “It was the best moment of my life.”
RIP Keegan’s Piangi, you would have thrived as a stan account on Twitter.
I had thought that since New York City Ballet’s Winter season had started, I would stop focussing so intently on the ballet corps during the Dressing Room sequence and finally turn my attention to the action down stage. If anything, my scrutiny on the corps has increased.
The choreography during this sequence is so good. It’s structured to almost resemble the center portion of a ballet class but Gillian Lynn had deliberately put in references to Degas’s ballet paintings and sculptures. It’s so clever and it lends so much atmosphere to the scene.
I’m really nitpicking here but I wish the ballet corps was a little bit tighter and were more synchronized? The main issue is that each ballet dancer has trained at a different school so the little details like arm and head placement are different. Like I said, I’m nitpicking because this is such a minor detail.
I am always so obsessed with this detail during Notes. Raoul directs the sung line “Why did Christine fly from my arms?” to André. Why does Raoul think André would know the answer? Nehal Joshi’s André always looks and gestures at John Riddle’s Raoul like “Give me a minute to deal with Carlotta and then I can help you with your stupid question” and it always cracks me up.
Ok so on the rooftop sequence after All I Ask of You when Raoul says “Christine, I love you,” I always love that when he says it, Julia’s face is in shadow and when she turns back, she’s in the light again. It’s such a good visual representation of Christine rejecting’ the Phantom’s world of shadow for Raoul’s world of sunlight.
Ted Keegan’s Piangi made a really good Don Juan?? I was actually really annoyed that the Phantom killed Piangi, because I actually kinda started to get into Don Juan Triumphant.
Ben got so raspy during some moments when he sang The Point of No Return and I’m annoyed because it’s going to be clattering around my brain until the next time I see Phantom.
I don’t know how Ted Keegan made his body so limp during the reveal of Piangi’s dead body, his feet were swinging around like he was a corpse. It was really disturbing.
Ben has a new line reading of ‘The world showed no compassion to me!’ I like it so much better!
I like it better when Ben’s Phantom says his second “I love you’ to the empty space Christine has left behind. I’ve seen him do it to Christine when she’s still standing in front of him, and it reads as more manipulative to me, like he’s still begging her to stay with him. When he’s by himself it reads more pathetic and sad to me.
When Meg {Polly Baird] ripped the cape from the throne to reveal the mask, someone in the audience (probably a kid) let out a giant gasp of surprise and it made me laugh. I know, I know, this means for spoiling the mood my punishment I will be forced to endure the never ending bathroom line during intermission at Phantom (I would like to throw the lady sitting next to me under the bus because she laughed too - it was not just me!!).

❤️ Meg
Jennifer Ellison: I have to include her because she's the reason I love Meg in the first place, and she's definitely among the things the movie got right. I will never not be frustrated that her mother caught her in the corridor leading to the Phantom's lair.
Hayley Driscoll: Cute as a button, beautiful, childlike singing voice, a cheery little doll with big expressive eyes and graceful movements. You wouldn't expect much from her but she's very much Christine's little guardian angel, standing up to the managers when suggesting Christine and as they dismiss her. She's a Meg I would have liked to see with Kelly Mathieson if I had a time machine, because when told to stay quiet you could tell she had a lot going on in her head. She understood the premise of Meg being a little detective throughout the show to a T.
Heidi Ann O'Brien: A great counterpart to Rachel Barrell's more discreet Christine, with a lovely warm singing voice. You have the implication that she may have encouraged the iron spine and will of steel Rachel's Christine shows later in the show. Heidi's Meg was sassy, mischievous, very protective of Christine, and she'd even openly mock people who were gratuitously mean towards her.
Emma Harris: A wonderfully detailed performance that complimented Gina Beck's very well. She's very much Madame Giry's daughter in the best way possible, the big sister to her Christine, with a will of steel, a take no nonsense attitude, and a good dose of common sense where she can tell right away in Angel of Music that there is something amiss and that it's nothing good. Probably the best voice for Meg the West End production has had, so I'm not surprised she's understudying Madame Giry nowadays.
Brianne Kelly Morgan: The perfect balance between the sassier and the softer interpretations of Meg (according to no other than Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne), she really told a story through every single one of her gestures and guided the audience throughout. Even then, she would still adjust her portrayal depending on who she was playing alongside as Meg - she was the little sister to Elizabeth Loyacano's more mature Christine, and the protective big sister to Kristi Holden's. And she has a voice on Christine's level, which makes it really a shame she never played the role of either Meg or even Christine on Broadway.
Layla Harrison: Gorgeous, great dancer, lovely voice, a lovely, thought out, detailed performance, and it's honestly a crime there aren't more videos of her as Meg, and an even bigger one she never made it to principal Meg.
Deanna Doyle: Cute as a kitten, lovely facial expressions, curious, just a little ball of charm who liked everyone and wanted to be friends with everyone. I may also be biased given she was one of the first Megs I've seen in a video that wasn't the 2004 movie or the 25th anniversary, so there's that.
Polly Baird: Her Meg isn't the most... expansive one, if that makes any sense - but she has a million dollar smile and she's a Meg where you feel there's a lot more going on underneath the surface as she slowly figures out what's going on with her friend. Basically the Sonya Rostova of Megs, and I mean this in the best way possible.
Eleanor Waite: ADORABLE. You would have wanted to pinch her cheeks. Her childlike portrayal worked very well with Kristi Holden's dreamy Christine, but she still had depths, intelligence and courage you would not have expected from her.
Georgia Ware: I say Olivia Safe is the Dora Brunlow of Christines, meanwhile Georgia is the Dora Brunlow of Megs. Another one of the kitten!Megs, with a sweetness paired with a nice dose of mischief. She felt like she was more of a little sister to both Kelly Mathieson and Amy Manford's Christines, but she would always encourage them to get out of their shells and was very supportive no matter what.
Imogen-Lily Ash: She had a very special but graceful way of moving that made her look like a cross between a ballerina and a kitten, and that made her really linger on my mind after seeing the Copenhagen revival video (and mind you, it has the best cast overall I've seen in a POTO video). Like Sybille Glosted, she was very responsive to her surroudings and happenings, never had a moment where she went blank, with maybe a hint of nervousness that makes her descending into the Phantom's Lair all the more poignant.
Sara Esty: Listen, she was ready to throw hands with the so-called Angel in Angel of Music already. The Phantom is lucky to have made it out before she arrived because there would have been a fight. A determined little knight in shining armor, and I really liked her with Meghan Picerno's Christine, because they were one of those Christine/Meg pairings where they really felt like real friends.
Fernanda Muniz: Listen, I saw a picture of her with those freckles, and I was REALLY hoping she wouldn't disappoint as Meg, given the cast for the Sao Paulo revival could be a little hit and miss. She was definitely a "hit". A VERY cheery little Meg, who would spontaneously laugh at certain moments and it felt genuine every time.
I haven't seen Kelly Loughran or Erica Wong yet, but I'm really eager to because I've only heard good things about them.
Send me ❤️ and a role in a musical and I’ll give you my favorite performers in the role.

As the narrative shifts, the three actors playing the three original Lehmans – Henry, Emanuel and Mayer, the head, the arm and "the potato" who keeps peace between them – take on multiple roles.
...
I particularly loved Lindsay's uptight Philip, pouring out his torrent of words as he pushes the business towards the future; the scene where he auditions a succession of potential wives, all played by Fraser with swift changes of voice and gesture is a comic joy; Fraser is wonderful too as the final Lehman, Bobbie, twisting in an ever quickening dance (choreography by Polly Bennett) as the firm hurtles towards the end.
