Sidestep masks! Varyingly pins and patches. I made a bunch of them because I was Captured by the Cross Stitch Bug this year. They are, from top left to bottom right:
@rangerdoubt‘s Miriam’s, @autistic-sidestep‘s Sura's, @rosaindomitus’s Aisling’s, a Sidestep Classic for @honor-among-thieves , my Arsinoe's (made this one Months ago but I haven’t attached it to anything yet so it gets to be in the group photo), @thenightdayblogger’s Esme, and a Sidestep Classic for @boundtoanandroid!
Under the cut are a couple progress photos and the sidestep classic pattern!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Front and back of the six I made most recently before I cut them out and finished them! There’s two brooch-back pins, a tie tack backed pin, three iron on patches and a sew on patch.
I based the sidestep classic pattern off the cover art from Rebirth that's polterink's design, and I made different patterns for the other masks, of course, but I’m less willing to share those since they aren’t my designs or the sort-of standard. The DMC thread values I used are 3845 for the bright turquoise, S415 for the light grey, 3799 for the dark grey (except for the three that are actually 413 i think), and 310 for the black!
A caveat that I didn't actually do all the backstitch this pattern shows-- I did as Little of the backstitch as I could get away with lol

Lumberjanes: the Infernal Compass by Lilah Sturges, Polterink

Welcome to Queerness In Comics, a bi-weekly column by Avery Kaplan, which will explore queer representation in comics. This week, Avery is exploring Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass, the graphic novel released in 2018.
Writer: Lilah Sturges Artist: polterink Letterer: Jim Campbell Publisher: Boom! Box
In the graphic novel Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compassby Lilah Sturges and polterink, the Lumberjanes face the consequences of a mystical navigational instrument that has the power to lead people astray. However, while the directional signifier displayed by the Infernal Compass may not necessarily align with the actual signified direction, the conclusion of the story presents a more nuanced understanding of the mystical artifact.
Orienteering
A central element of the premise of The Infernal Compass is the orienteering. As explained by Jen, the competitive sport involves making one’s way across a designated course using only a compass and a topographical map. Along the way, participants locate a series of “control points” (signified by white and orange flags) by using the compass and map to chart their course from control point to the next.
Naturally, the introduction of the Infernal Compass complicates the prospect of orienteering. After all, how can one successfully navigate their way from one control point to the next when the signifier displayed by the compass doesn’t match up with the direction one is meant to be heading?

The Name of the Ship
During the scene in which Jen explains orienteering, April notices that Mal and Molly are holding hands and is unable to contain her excitement. April is so invested in the budding romance that she has even spent time considering prospective names for their ship – explaining to Ripley that all famous couples have cutesy portmanteau designations for their relationships.
The proceedings cause Mal to blush, but eventually, she admits that she’s given the ship name some consideration herself. However, Molly can’t help but feel weird about the spotlight being shined on her and Mal.

Are you going to get the same artist to do the cover for retribution?
I hope so!  @polterink is a lot busier these days with comics and stuff, but I had a yes earlier, now I just need to settle on what concept I want and get some inspiration!

Exciting news!! Lilah Sturges and Polterink are working on another original Lumberjanes graphic novel - Lumberjanes: The Shape of Friendship. It seems that this one will focus on April & Jo!
“The Lumberjanes are at it again, making trouble and making friends, all at the same time. This time their adventurous rambles take them deep into the woods, to the hiding place of a group of magical creatures known as Pookas. The ‘Janes are delighted to meet these magical beings and make new friends. But what they don’t know is that these isolated magical creatures are actually master shapeshifters and just itching for the chance to see what human life is all about.
Everything quickly goes awry as the Pookas decide to try life in the ‘Janes shoes and end up turning Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types upside down. Mal, Ripley, Molly, April & Jo will have to work together, using the power of friendship, in order to reclaim their lives and teach the Pookas that sometimes your best self is your true self.“
