today at school, the honors chemistry teacher XYZ gave everyone a pop quiz. it was about polyatomic ions and whatnot and the entire class bombed it (class averages ranged from 2-3/10 THE WHOLE DAY so i'm told).
Mr. XYZ told them that if all the other periods did worse than them, he would raise their and only their scores. now surely, among these honorable, respectable students, they would do what was best for the majority and warn the others of the looming danger, yes?
what i saw proceed was the most brutal, tragic, and coordinated form of psychological sabotage i have ever personally witnessed occur in real life. the ENTIRE period organized to convince all the other students of Mr. XYZ that it was about lewis structure or some other garbage (idk lol our class is behind) instead and not ONE whisper of the plot leaked. i witnessed close friends from infancy betray one another. whispers of lewis structure became the knives with which allies stabbed one another in their backs, smiling as they sentenced comrades to death by grading. i'd be willing to bet that at least one friendship was broken today over the pop quiz.
the thing is, this is not the first instance of Mr. XYZ being the mastermind of student misery. i'd be willing to bet that Mr. XYZ is a social scientist or whatever they're called posing to be a teacher at our school studying the minds of high school students.
everyday i wake up and thank the Lord almighty that i am NOT a student of Mr. XYZ

Science Teacher Moments
My chemistry class is studying ionic bonds right now, so I'm working on the lesson plan for making ionic compounds using transition metals as well as polyatomic ions.
But that's a lot of big words, and so I abbreviate in my own notes.
So now I have a lesson file titled "trans and poly"

Who needs rebellion when you have desperately trying not to puke while on the bus.
The whole teenage dirt bag shit isn’t going so well bc I’m trying to be a A,B student and go to college
Maybe I should learn now how to study while not drunk
I explained math to my friend while drunk
Powers of i go in groups of 4
I’ve memorized the quadratic equation but I can’t remember how to solve it
Also like factored form of quadratics
(X+r(1))(x+r(2))
Do i know how to solve that
Only kinda of
Vertex form makes sense soemtimes
Ionic compounds

i got you (jake)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PAIR. high school! bf! jake x gn! reader GENRE. hurt/comfort, jake is an academic weapon WORD COUNT. 0.6k WARNINGS. math, anxiety, ap season, academics in general NOTES. ap season is making me lose my mind in every way possible but if jake tutored i bet i would get a 5 IN WHICH: with all hope of an academic comeback gone, jake swears to personally help you clutch up your gradebook, no matter what.
the calculus test stares up at you, the numbers you had written the week before blending into incessant scribbles that pound at your head and sting at your eyes. red marks plague your work and the crimson ink slashes at the harsh white, making the numerals bleed. you flip the exam over, quickly rolling it up into a scroll and stuffing it into your bag.
a 68 percent. you had gotten a 68 on the test that you had calculated and count on to change your grade for the better. you had failed.
biting your lip, you walk out of the nearly empty classroom, your heart sinking into your gut.
everything was so much.
from studying for the AP exams coming up in less than two months to frantically memorizing all the polyatomic ion formulas for chemistry-- you were spent. you had thought you had done fine, you had thought that you had this one in the bag.
obviously not.
the door to the cafeteria approaches to your left and you walk towards it, feeling sharp jabs in your abdomen from the anxiety.
“please let it be almost empty,” you whisper, pushing the door open and walking through the clusters of students.
at your usual table, your boyfriend jake sits with his computer, pencil in hand. probably doing the physics bonus problems, for fun— under normal circumstances, you would’ve laughed at him. he sees you in the corner of his peripheral and smiles.
“hey,” jake scoots to the left of the bench and offers you the seat. his smile falters a bit when he sees your face, your eyes glassy and red.
“hey,” you mutter, your voice constricted. you were having trouble keeping the tears in and you feared that you would burst at any given moment. you keep your head down and try to avoid his gaze.
jake stares at you, his brown eyes focusing on your bent head and trembling bottom lip.  “hey,” he says again, his voice soothing and soft.  “what’s the matter?”
you had no appetite, but you found yourself walking past the table, toward the lunch line. jake trailed behind you. cautiously, as if you’d run away at any moment.
his hand grabs onto yours and he pulls on your fingertips lightly.  “[name],” he pushes, his hand warm to the touch.
you shake your head and turn back to face him, your eyes beginning to water. “i– i,” you stammer, your voice shaking and cracking as you struggled to remain calm, “i’m having a really rough day.” your words trigger something inside of yourself and a tear slides it’s way down your face, trickling down your cheek and sliding off your chin onto your shoes.
you walk towards jake who meets you halfway, his arms wrapping around you tightly. you rest your head in the crook of his neck and let the tears fall from your eyes. your body wracks up and down, unable to control itself.
jake’s hand moves up and down the small of your back.  “it’s going to be okay,” he says in your ear.
“i got a sixty eight in calc,” you manage, your voice coming out in teary whispers. “it’s so bad... i tried so hard for this. i basically failed.”
jake shakes his head. “no. no [name].” he takes his hand and moves a strand of hair behind your ears. “you are not a failure. tell you what, i’ll help you with math from now on, and we are going to get you a 100 on the next test. sound good?”
you sniff and nod, your head resting on his shoulder. “thank you.”
jake nods and smiles, pressing a soft kiss on your forehead. “anytime.”

Bird Rants: Portals and Stuff
In the Supergirl show, the transmatter portal is described as working via polyatomic anions. No, just no, that's nonsensical. It sounds like gibberish, and it bothers me to no end. There's a better way to describe how it works that's way more fun.
So hear me out, okay? I got a physics degree, and I did a bit on research on how such a portal could work based on how the show describes it. (disclaimer: I simplified things a little bit for this explanation).
First: the show claims the portals are set up via locations. As in the person had to visit both locations to "program" that location into it.
Second: it looks like the opening of a wormhole.
This leads me to believe the portals actually work via quantum entanglement and wormholes that utilize negative energy. So, particles on a quantum level are weird. They tend to exist in all states at once until measured, but at the moment of our measurement, the particle collapses into a specific state. This is the foundation of a lot of quantum mechanics and many of the weirdness such as entanglement. Another important property is the uncertainty principle, where we can't measure all properties exactly. For example, if we measure the velocity of the particle, the location measurement will be smeared out and inexact. And vice versa. (Seriously, quantum world is weird, and I absolutely love it).
Uncertainty principle is the basics of vacuum energy within spacetime (a.k.a. space). It plays a big role in stabilizing a wormhole for travel.
Now, this smearing out of the particles allows for some weird shit like entanglement!
Meaning, we can entangle particles so that they are basically married/connected. For example, if one entangled particle has an Up Spin, then its buddy will always be the opposite - Down Spin. (Fun side note, the distance between them doesn't matter. It's a nonlocal connection. if we measure the one particle as up, the other - even if its thousands of lightyears away - will always be the opposite).
Knowing that, we can look at the portals. Per the first claim, two locations are programed into the portal device. That likely means the locations are entangled on a particle level. So how to pass through to the other location? Create a miniature wormhole and use energy to expand it into a person-sized portal. The entangled particles at both end would hold the ends of the wormhole in place, but in order to stabilize the wormhole for travel, the device must provide enough negative energy to allow passage. (See my side notes below as to what negative energy is).
The type of particles doesn't matter (all matter is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons anyway. And protons and neutrons are made up of quarks). Therefore, it also does not matter what the molecule is (for example, polyatomic ions are two or more atoms in a covalent bond that act as one unit. That describes most matter actually. But even single atoms would work). This is because quantum entanglement doesn't happen on the atom level but the particle level. As in the ingredients for an atom.
Therefore, transmatter portals in Supergirl actually work via quantum entanglement and wormholes, which are stabilized using negative energy. Important side notes:
Wormholes were predicted by Einstein's general relativity theory. They connect two points in spacetime (but can also connect two separate universes for those that theorize the existence of the multiverse). Wormholes can form on a quantum level -- for example the particle accelerator CERN in Switzerland has detected miniature black holes that last a few microseconds before vanishing. Wormholes can last about as long. However in order to get wormholes to the size of a human being, a LOT of energy would be needed. Kip Thorne, a physicist, calculated out a way to artificially create one, and one method involves the making a microscopic wormhole. Then utilize negative energy to expand that and hold it open. What is negative energy though?
This is the fun part. Spacetime has been theorized (and some testing has proved this) to be a curved surface full of a frothing sea of particles that pop in and out of existence (as in matter and antimatter particles colliding to annihilate one another). This is called vacuum energy.
Now, this is where quantum mechanics comes into play! Quantum field theory through the Casimir effect could essentially create a region of negative energy. That negative energy could in turn be harnessed to hold open a wormhole as postulated by several physicists such as Stephen Hawking, Kip Thorne, and Brian Greene. Having said that, what is Casimir effect then?
That one deals with the vacuum energy I just described above and how it interacts with materials in a confined space. The materials (commonly electrical conductors and dielectrics) alter the vacuum energy fields, which in turn creates a force between the materials.
...
Yes, I spent way too much time coming up with a more plausible theory on how these portals work. Uh, you're welcome.
