Oh, puh-leeze! The description calls this a custom made home with high end finishes and lavish interior design. It's a 2023 new build in Poncha Springs, CO w/5bds, 3ba. Asking $825k + $33mo. HOA. The house may have high end materials, but they were either found in a construction site dumpster or Odd Lots. Check this out. Oh, and it's been sitting on the market for 305 days, almost a year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Open the front door and Hello! Oh, I forgot to mention leftover rolls of discontinued wallpaper, too. The chandelier is nice, but they saved a lot, so they could afford to splurge.
Tumblr media
Closeup of the fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dining room and kitchen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Different cabinets and backsplash tiles. I'm not a matchy-matchy person, but this is something else. It looks like they made the cabinets b/c they have door fronts & molding with beadboard sides.
Tumblr media
Bath #1. I think I saw those sinks at Home Goods, with the pasta bowls.
Tumblr media
More cabinets, backsplash tiles, wallpaper & flooring varieties in the laundry room. Usually in a new build they give you a w/d pair with the appliances.
Tumblr media
I think that this is a family room.
Tumblr media
It's open to another smaller room.
Tumblr media
I guess this is a flex-space. Seriously, they've gone overboard w/the chandeliers.
Tumblr media
Oh, no they did not put wood in the shower.
Tumblr media
Another assortment of building materials.
Tumblr media
There's a walk-in closet.
Tumblr media
Bedroom #1.
Tumblr media
Bedroom #2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know which room is the primary. Maybe it's this one, b/c it seems to be the largest.
Tumblr media
Bedroom #4.
Tumblr media
The 2nd bath. Interesting combination.
Tumblr media
The garage is surprisingly plain.
Tumblr media
The home is on a 6,625 sq. ft. lot.

Day 14, Friday June 9: Gunnison to Poncha Springs to Nathrop to Pikes Peak to Colorado Springs 338 km
Today will be all about climbing. As I leave Gunnison at 7,700', I am surrounded by typical mountain valley geography, beautiful rich river valleys on one side, and again backed by low hills on the other.
I head east on Hwy 50 for Poncha Springs. It is there that I will swing north and east on Hwy 285 towards my final destination of Colorado Springs.
While the route starts out flat, that changes quickly. In order to reach Poncha Springs I have to go over the Monarch Pass at 11,312'. It is a gorgeous climb followed by an equally gorgeous descentvas Poncha Springs is actually 200' lower than Gunnison.
The ride on 285 to Nathrop is relatively level as it takes me to the junction of Hwys 285 and 24. If I turn north on Hwy 24, I will be going to Leadville. I turn east owever as I am headed for Pikes Peak.
As I continue on to the base of Pikes Peak, the elevation remains relatively constant except for now a relatively routine climb over Wilerson pass at 9,507'. Much of the ride I am surrounded by rich mountain meadows, expansive ranches, and contented looking range cattle.
I arrive at the base of Pikes Peak at only 6,400' with a dense cover of threatening black clouds overhead. As I pay my entry fee, I ask what I am in for. The advice I get is " you best hurry up".
I had no real appreciation of what I was in for. I am about to climb almost 7,800 vertical feet (that's 1.5 vertical miles) over 19 miles.
It starts out innocuous enough for the first 2,500' looking like a typical forest mountain road. But as you start to get above the treeline, its true personality becomes apparently - high, steep, windy and cold, with no guard rails.
The guard station near the 11,500' mark is there to tell you to turn back or that you can continue, based upon conditions. It also checks everyone's brakes with a heat gun on the way back down and makes you pull over if they are too hot.
If you can't drive, there is actually a trolley that you can take instead. I make it through and continue to the top. What I didn't anticipate was how the altitude would affect me. I am lightheaded, and I definitely slow it down. One wrong move on this mountain, and there are no second chances.
I do make it through, but I am awestruck. It started raining on the way down, and I ride into Colorado Springs in a downpour.
I am too tired to care. Colorado Springs is a city of 484,000 at 5,994', best known for Garden of the Gods, a massive National Natural Landmark with a biodiversity that sprawls from the grasslands up into the mountains and a popular national playground. But my bike is overheating, I'm wet and tired, and I just want to find my hotel, book a service call for tomorrow morning, drink some cold beer, and rest.
Meanwhile, Pikes Peak, what can I say? Simply mad ass. 14,115' of extreme elevation, steep grades, cutbacks, hairpins, snow, storm clouds, and rain. What a white knuckled blast.

8 Second Kölsch from Elevation Beer Company out of Poncha Springs, CO. A decent Kolsch if a little bitter on the finish. Despite all my time in Colorado and living there twice I have no idea where Ponca Springs is.

Welcome Center and Wine - Salida, CO
Tumblr media
We had to make a trip to town today, Doug needed internet access to take care of some business and do our finances.  We ended up at the Crossroads Welcome Center (located in Poncha Springs at the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 285).  What a great place!  The volunteer was helpful and they have tons of information and maps, definitely worth stopping at - not to mention public restrooms, too.  The gentleman working at the welcome center asked us if we knew about Olathe sweet corn - we told him that we knew what that was!  He told us that a truck full of Olathe corn had wrecked on Monarch Pass a few days ago and spilled its load.  The clean-up crew brought the corn down to a local church’s parking lot for the locals to have, since they couldn’t sell it.  He told us he had a bunch in the back of his truck, if we wanted some.  We said, “Sure, that would be great!”  So we got ourselves a few ears of “crash corn” - what a great story!
After Doug finished up all his computer stuff, we decided to check out the local winery after driving by this sign:

How could we not stop?  Wine with a spectacular view!
We stopped at Vino Salida and did a tasting.  They had a great selection and we enjoyed ourselves.  Nice tasting room, with plenty of seating inside and a lovely outdoor space, too.  Not a bad way to spend an hour!  We made a purchase, of course, and then headed back up to our campsite.

Vino Salida, located just off of Highway 285 in Salida - definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!

Colorado Visits
I made a bucket list for the county once to help me get to know the area but truth be told I see more of it on maps than I do in person because of my job. most of what I have already seen has been due to working with the Amish and Geocashing. I got back into it because this state is so fucking beautiful.
So.... Heres everywhere I have been in Colorado so far.
Entire County I reside in- about 65% of it.
The Sand Dunes- Theres only 1. Loved it!
Hot Springs- Just 1 for the moment but go all the time
Ski Resorts- Wolf Creek
Mountain Passes- La Manga, Cumbres, La Veta, Blowout, Wolf Creek, Cucharas, Poncha
Concert Venues- Black Sheep, The Roxy, Fiddlers Green
Haunted Places- Trying to hit as many as possible.
Historical Sites- trying to hit as many as possible.
National Forests- Rio Grande, San Juan, Pike, San Isabel, Great Sand Dunes,
The Continental Divide- have seen it from areas no one else has
Waterfalls- Treasure Falls, Zapata Falls, ( Now I have to go look up the names of the rest)
Towns/Cities- La Jara, Sanford, Manassa, Romeo, Antonito, Alamosa, San Luis, Conejos, Fort Garland, Walsenburg, Bountiful, La Sauces, Platoro, Jasper, Monte Vista, Del Norte, South Fork, Creede, Trinidad, Colorado Springs, Denver, Salida, Pagosa Springs, Capulin, Durango, Colorado City, Pueblo, La Junta, Lamar, Castle Rock, Monument, Crestone, Hooper, Moffat, Villa Grove, Poncha Springs, Summitville, Canon City, Rye, San Isabel, ( I know I missed a bunch)
Hiking Trails- Now I have to go look all of them up too.
Tourist spots- Sand Dunes, Observatory, Last Chance Mine, Treasure Falls, Platoro, UFO Tower, Crestone , Bishops Castle
Didn’t realize how much effort I was going to have to put into this just to start it. lol      Still not done. Have I really been all these places????
