[PONEGLYPH FANLANG] Chapter 272's Stelle transcription and translation

Hello, back with the Poneglyph Fanlang!

After previously translating Roger's words on the Shandora Grand Bell, as seen here: [WIP] One Piece's Ancient Language (Poneglyph) Fanlang, I'm now attempting to translate another Poneglyph with a full translation. In the canon manga, only two Poneglyphs have full translations. This one is from Chapter 272, "Play," and was discovered by Robin.

If you're familiar with the Japanese language, you might notice that the sentence structure is identical to Japanese syntax (SOV). The basic language used is Old Egyptian, employing a triconsonantal root system similar to Arabic.

Here are some words you might recognize if you know Japanese:

okkaret = kokoro (heart)

enṓganopet = ogane (big bell)

You may notice that the same sound can be represented by completely different glyphs. This is because the Poneglyph uses a system somewhat akin to the Maya script and Rongorongo script, allowing different glyphs for the same sound for aesthetic reasons. Another reason for these complex sound-to-glyph correspondences is to make Poneglyphs difficult to read and decipher by the government.

But let me be honest, the main reason is that the Poneglyph is a gibberish-type of conlang. It seems like Oda didn't create a fully functional conlang for Poneglyph and may have scribbled-down the script. Or perhaps Oda used a cipher conlang? Who knows.

What reason does cross guild have to take out Blackbeard? Did I miss something?/genuine

No you haven’t missed anything. Not really!

The Strawhats and Luffy especially have reason because Blackbeard orchestrated Marineford to get an all star evil crew from Impel Down and Whitebeard’s DF. Therefore Blackbeard is basically responsible for Ace’s death. We know Blackbeard gave Shanks his facial scar, so I assume there is bad blood there, although the story hasn’t been revealed.

My reasons for the cross guild joining… under the cut. (Spoilers for Egghead arc past the anime, safe to read for manga readers)

My first (weaker) reason:

Perona goes in search of Moria, who is last seen on Blackbeard’s island while he is away. We are lead to assume Moria is killed by Shiryu and Catarina Devon. In the fandom, most people consider Perona to be Mihawk’s adopted daughter. In cannon, I’m not sure if Mihawk would go rescue her, but if he did he would probably go by himself…

But I think it is so funny to imagine Mihawk pulling up to the Sunny and being like: “Zoro! We gotta go rescue your sister”

My second (stronger) reason:

Currently all the 4 emperors are going after the One Piece and while Luffy has Robin to read the poneglyphs and went to each one of the Road Poneglyph and then collected them honestly. Luffy and Law gave Kidd copies of the Road Poneglyphs they got during their alliance because of his help with the battle on Onigashima. I’m not sure if he even knew about the road poneglyphs being necessary to find the One Piece before they give the copies to him. Anyway…

Shanks takes Kidd’s poneglyphs before he distroyed him (although I’m sure Kidd is still alive somehow), and Blackbeard took Law’s when he beat the Heart Pirates. So if we look at the race for the One Piece as consisting of having the info (poneglyphs) and having the means to translate them.

1st place- Luffy with 3 poneglyphs and Robin

2nd place- Blackbeard with 3 poneglyphs and Pudding. As it is implied in WCI that Big Mom wanted a kid with a 3rd eye because she thought they could read the poneglyphs.

Also in 2nd place- Shanks, because even though we don’t know how he intends to read them, Shanks has 3 poneglyphs and probably knows where the 4th one is.

Last place- goes to Buggy and the Cross Guild, with no poneglyphs and no means for translation. However Buggy has strong armed Crocodile and Mihawk into going for the One Piece by telling their entire organization that they will. If they go against him the organization will crumble because all of Buggy’s followers think that he is awesome, and they will look ridiculous if it comes to light that he got the better of them in the first place.

But I bet that it will only take Crocodile realizing that the race for the One Piece would help him get his hands on one of the ancient weapons and he would get on board. After that getting their hands on the road poneglyphs would be fairly easy. As a former Roger Pirate, Buggy can walk into Wano and ask to see their poneglyph, and unless he can read the poneglyph, or is given the explanation by Oden’s dad, he or Crocodile wouldn’t know about Pluton being hid under the poneglyph. If Crocodile did know about Pluton being under there then he would probably want to stop the whole thing there to bring down Wano’s borders and get it.

So after Buggy goes to Wano, Inurashi and Nekomamushi would give him a note or something to have permission to look at the one on Zou. A quick call to King Neptune or a little research and he would find out that the road poneglyph from the Ryugu Kingdom went to Big Mom.

With Big Mom out of the picture the Cross Guild could honestly trade or buy access to the one on Whole Cake Island.

Then the Cross Guild would have everything Shanks has since Buggy would also probably know how to find the 4th one.

My third reason:

Blackbeard is growing stronger by the day, and in addition to looking for the One Piece it is going to become obvious to everyone that he is going to try to crush the other Emperors eventually. His crew is in direct competition with the Cross Guild in terms of power. If they want to survive, teaming up with Shanks and or Luffy would be their best bet.

I also think story wise it would be one of the best ways for a Shanks and Buggy reconciliation, and to allow the Akagami Pirates to interact with the rest of the one piece world.

Because if that theory goes around that Shanks will die before Luffy gets to reconnect with him ends up being true. I will be very upset 😠

there might be one other character in OP that can read poneglyphs, at least in the anime

tatsu did steal robin’s memories, and from what i remember he can and does refer to what he learns about people from their stolen memories even after his targets get them back

Every time I see them together in pursuit of the poneglyphs, and

giving each other sass (hyena-kun),

my heart skips a few beats!

And so Wano is sunken below the sea, just like Atlantis and old Seattle (well, Seattle's not quite under the sea yet). And these two witness it:

Sitting cross-legged like kids in a school yard (had Marco and Law looking, or trying to look out at the deep water fish in the Polar Tang a little bit similarly for one fic!)

Lookit our boy. Oda knows how to provide eye candy.

Down the stairs they go.

Not sure if that shouldn't be the Road Poneglyph. The meaning really changes, but in case it's Lode, they've hit the mother (next one will be the grandmother, maybe! :-).

AND I really like how this mirrors Law's stance on Onigashima when he was searching for the road poneglyph. Guess Robin doesn't know about that.

Here's the big reveal! (above). It's a shame that Franky's not with them, but I like that Robin and Law share this pursuit (for somewhat similar reasons, although I think Robin's are more far reaching).

So opening the country up is a literal act that would also destroy it, and it seems that both Momonosuke and Zunesha have some understanding of this. Zunesha's got those very, very, very long legs...great for lost underwater city exploring.

Meanwhile, Bepo and co are having fun in the city, and Killer's really making those takoyaki last.

And Jim Morrison here, faded to Liberace pretty damn fast. Crass in this ass but no class. We do need a drunken, stumbling, powerful bum, who's unhinged,though. Like, we've got Kizaru, but he doesn't have the destructive will of Ryokugyu, I think. Bullish by name and nature.

Okay, so Yams is definitely gonna leave the nation? And good speech Momonosuke-kun! There are far too many Straw Hats already, so I hope he hops along for a ride, but we (I) don't need an extra Straw Hat.

Shanks' mind here, Luffy picking up the vibe later. It wouldn't surprise me if Momo felt him too, but Shanks is doing what he does from the deck of the Red Force.

It seems that despite all of Momonosuke's big words and heart, and learning how to produce boro-breath (but not being able to control it), it still takes the Old(er) Generation to stop an admiral in his tracks.

Can Momonosuke remember Shanks? He should be able to. For him, being eight years old was as recent as about three (?) months ago. Love Yamato's victory punch and dance.

And Ryokugyu quitting when the going gets rough. The bonus last page was fab too:

Brook and Hiyori doing what Brook and Hiyori do best, and I cannot wait to hear that. Not much is said about the SFX and ambient set up in the anime at times (separate from the fight scenes), and some of it is just amazing. Franky hanging out with Chopper and Toko, and Usopp above the crowd.

The monster trio (and Jinbei), sitting on the hill in their summer yukata, enjoying the food stall wares (Luffy), sake (Zoro), and a smoke (Sanji).

Jinbei's full after eating all of the palace food so that the Straw Hats didn't lose face (I'm making that up).

And they were so ready to help out (but it still doesn't prove that Momo and co. can look after themselves, but really, I guess they'll be aligned with Emperor Luffy and so on).

Also, we know where Killer is, but where's Kid?

Aw, I really like the relationship between Shanks and Luffy, and I like how Luffy's actions here mirror Shanks' own, to a degree, although, again, even though Luffy beat an emperor, how will he stand up again against the admirals? I think he'll be fine, obviously, but Shanks stepping in at the pivotal moment carries a lot of weight.

I hope that's not the last of Ryokugyu (Aramaki) though!

*Oh, and I know Frobin's got Oda's heart, but don't tell me he hasn't got a soft spot for Law and Robin, even as a brotp, and I'm fine with that! I ship Frobin too.

[WIP] One Piece's Ancient Language (Poneglyph) Fanlang ------------------------------

This is my attempt to make a fanlang for One Piece's Ancient Language and its script: Poneglyph. I use this panel here as the guide since this is the only version of a text that has a direct translation.

For the base, I use middle Japanese words (even tho not every word I need could be found) and evolve it so it resembles the Ancient Egyptian phonesthetic. It is a Triconsonantal Root system conlang, but there are several noun-derived groups that use quadriliteral roots. The word order is OSV, preposition, posesive-posesee, Adjective_Phrase-Noun.

For the script, I use Logogram + Abjad and several syllabaries for noun endings. The script's writing direction is Boustrophedon from top-to-bottom. For the style of the writing... I mainly use Oda's original design for the script, although I standardized the glyphs.

It is still a Work in Progress. I am planning to make a YouTube video to explain the language more. I also want to try to make documentation in the form of a document and some vocabulary lists in Google Sheets. Inputs are really appreciated!

ONE PIECE SPOILERS:

Ch 1065 really boosted one of my most recent theories with this last page. I've been rewatching the series and reading through the manga for extra information about certain things. During Enies Lobby, in Robin's past, Professor Clover mentions a civilization that was lost during the void that likely wrote and left the poneglyphs. I had originally thought that Joyboy might have been from Wano, because we know that the poneglyphs were made by the kozuki clan and Joyboy had written that apology letter on the poneglyph on fishman island. Then I thought maybe he was from Elbaf, because of the theories that he was a giant - mainly because of the massive straw hat that Im looks at in Marie geoise during Reverie. And then I got to the information about the lost kingdom that Professor Clover mentioned. It would make more sense that Joyboy was from this kingdom, because they wrote on the poneglyphs and existed/stopped existing during the void century. Just like Joyboy. Now with ch 1065, Vegapunk is talking about the technology on egghead being similar to that of a civilization that was lost during the void century - which vegapunk would have access to any leftovers that were confiscated by the world govt bc he works for them. We also know that vegapunk studies devil fruits. One of the most powerful DFs is the awakened human human fruit, model: Nika. Luffy's awakening was the first time since Joyboy during the void century that this DF was awakened. Since vegapunk is studying the tech from the void AND devil fruits for the WG, then Joyboy would HAVE to be one of the targets of his research. This brings us to that last panel where we see a giant, ancient mech/set of armor? If vegapunk and clover are talking about the same civilization, and the giant armor/mech from that last panel is from that civilization, then Joyboy being a giant from that civilization would be totally plausible. I'm still trying to figure out where dragon and the revolutionary army fit into all this, but I feel like he's going to be the catalyst or driving force in unraveling all of this
