I liked the part with the loose anti-crab barrier.
Incredibly detailed and fluidly animated; Ponyo is a gorgeous movie full of lovely locations, fascinating creatures, and vivid colour. I loved the seaside village, and the house up on the hill. All very pretty looking and carefully depicted. The scenes taking place in the ocean were fantastic and full of life. The soundtrack appropriately matched the visuals in wonder.
All the stuff to do with the ocean magic and the tsunami was interesting, and I thought Lisa was a great character. The part where she got pissed off at her husband for not returning on time was hilarious. I also really liked the nursing home and the old ladies living there, especially the one (rightfully) superstitious one.
Unfortunately, at its core, Ponyo is about a romance between a five year old boy and a goldfish in human form. It just didn't work for me. It's not very deep or compelling, and ends up hastily concluding à la The Little Mermaid, without anything preceding it really moving that direction.
Sosuke and Ponyo basically just play with toy boats and eat ham together, like five year olds, and then Ponyo's mum is convinced they have found true love together? It felt half-hearted. More attention to Sosuke's family situation would have been appreciated, or even just a proper reunion with his dad.
A good, fun movie. Nice to look at, but a bit shallow in terms of plot.
