hmmn. is it bad that i do not like genderbends in the slightest. like the ones that don't change too much about the character or oversexualize them is definitely an improvement from the usual. and i get that those who draw it don't intend it this way but also as a trans person who can't afford top surgery (and likely never will) i do not love seeing "girl version of [character]" where the only difference is giving them tits

im not usually a huge VR game fan bc they give me headaches (i actually love them but whatever) but Rhombus of Ruin was nothing short of genius for the way they utilized the medium

While I know it isn't fully your AU, how did poor Cali fair the events of Psychonauts 2 in your take on the Uncle Cally AU?
i saved this ask for Ages because I wanted to draw something big and bold for it! i didn't do that but i DID draw this that got the energy across and will say a lot of words in an order under the cut!!
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A black-and-white digital ink drawing of Caligosto from Frankie and Puzz's "Uncle Cally" AU. He is wearing large round glasses like his childhood self, has shoulder-length shaggy hair with a kerchief tied in it, an Aquato Circus unitard with baggy shorts over it, knee-high laced boots, a high-collared shawl, fingerless gloves, and an elbow-to-wrist sleeve on his right arm only. He is drawn in a sketchy, inky style, staring directly at the viewer ominously, standing with his arms held at his sides, hands splayed out menacingly. There are numerous telekinetic hands around him. End ID.]
so my interpretation of Uncle Cally changed a lot post-Psychonauts 2, understandably, and as always whenever I talk Uncle Cally I have to give enormous credit to Friend of Frankie for 1) coming up with and selling me on the idea in the first place, and 2) always being so game to bounce ideas off each other in ways that allowed me to cook on pretty much everything I'm about to say. but more or less, I took what was already in this version of Cal (taking on work that was morally ambiguous at best and using his psychic powers in an effort to protect his family from the many unseen-yet-implied Enemies Of The Aquatos) and reinterpreted that with what Psychonauts 2 then elaborated on with regards to the Aquatos' history and particularly Nona, and where I landed was this:
Cal, post-Psychonauts 2, realizes he was being put down a path to become a successor to Maligula.
Not intentionally, mind. It couldn't be - Nona didn't remember that part of her life, not consciously. but Cal always did get flashes of a different Nona when it was just the two of them - a Nona that insisted he had to use his powers to keep Augustus safe, that he had a responsibility to protect the family no matter the cost. a more haunted Nona. and Cal took it all to heart, doing things he knew were wrong for the sake of protecting his family. even by the point of Psychonauts 1 and RoR, when the things he was doing started backfiring and getting his own family involved and endangered, I think he thought it was a terrible fluke, that he still believed he was doing the wrong things for the right reasons.
and then, you know. he finds out about Maligula. how Lucrecia became Maligula in the name of using her powers to protect her country and her family; how what little fragments were left of her had been feeding Cal that same logic and leading him down the same path. I think it made him horrified and angry, at Nona and even moreso at himself, and left him grappling with how he could deal with that hurt and betrayal without just... continuing to worsen the harm that had already been done to everyone involved. much like Augustus, he has to kinda retreat and spend a lot of time mulling things over, and in some ways I think he does take it even harder. (it definitely makes him finally turn his back on any further work as "Dr. Loboto", and I think maybe between that + Raz's involvement + his little kinda sorta crush on Oleander he starts considering work with the Psychonauts in the aftermath of Everything.)

Morceau Oleander and Cal's (Horrible) "Parents", please
OH BOY ! (<so normal)
Tumblr media
Honestly I can't go talking about Oleander without bringing up his part of the Li-Po Backstory Document, but can you really blame me? As much as that doc is so old and should be taken with a grain of salt considering the amount of contradicting information to PN2 it has, it's pretty much all we have in terms of more development for poor Morceau, so I'll take it. It provides loads of much-needed insight into Morry's character. Li-Po Doc truthers where you at!!! Rise up!!!
Tumblr media
(^screenshot relevant)
I think it's so so fucked up that the meatgrinder incident happened before Morry could prove himself to his parents. I think hearing that information while being a camp counselor at Whispering Rock, I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back, what caused him to become more cold and to start brewing his master plan. If he can't show his family, he'll show them all.
Which brings him to Cal... Caligosto & Morceau's relationship is so so interesting to me, at least from what little we've seen of it in memory vaults. The doctor *hated* psychics, that much was true, but Morry was (assumedly) a paying client. I believe for that reason Cal is able to set that difference aside, especially after hearing the plans for their project. On the other side, I think Morceau saw Cal as one of the only people who saw him as capable, someone who thought he could do great things. And maybe they could do great things together. [looks at the camera knowing the events of the game] That went well didn't it
After the cruel stunt that he pulls, I think Morry has to regain a lot of trust that the Psychonauts had in him(something he didn't know the organization had to begin with), and that includes Milla & Sasha. Morceau always thought that those two talked down so condescendingly toward him.. but I think only after the fact is when he realizes that they were both always genuine, always believed in him. That truth probably eats him alive night after night. He already had it hard before he stole those kids' brains, now he's just dug himself into a deeper trench, lost more than he had.
I don't think the Psychonauts will let him be a camp counselor again for a while. At least not until Sasha & Milla perform a few mental checkups on him, make sure he's alright. Despite everything, those two still care about him, the time they've spent together still matters to them, and I'm sure it matters to Morceau as well.
(-also as a side-hc I think All Paul was his gay awakening. I think we all know that right?)
Tumblr media
Cali's parents are a very interesting case, to say the least. There's so little we know about them it's hard to make assumptions. Nonetheless;
Having such a negative response to their son being psychic, there's some part of me that thinks this isn't the first time this has happened in their family's bloodline. A family with "Loboto" as their last names, after all, might not be just a coincidence. And especially considering the father IS a doctor himself, I wonder what could've set him down that career path. It's food for thought, you know?
We can't really know much about what the mother's profession was, but what I think is that she was an artist of some kind. The tiny replica of the house & the flowers painted on it, the little stitched dolls representing the family? If we're to believe that Cal's entire memory vault in RoR is based on her work that he remembers, he must've had a strong relationship with her before she deemed him an unnatural monster. This could also explain why Cal decides to wear a floral pattern shower cap too. It'd be a little sad to know he might still hold love for his parents who treated him like a monster & lobotomized him because of powers he didn't ask for.
(honestly if anyone could add onto this part that'd be great, I have so much trouble coming up with anything for these guys + I HATE them very much, fuck these "parents")

Since I got notes on that one post, here are my thoughts on how the main villains of the Psychonauts series relate to Raz. I'll try my best to be clear and succinct.
Psychonauts 1 - Morceau Oleander, Raz's parallel
The first thing we really start to learn about Raz is that he feels like an outsider in his family because he's psychic. This, and that he wants to become a hero so he can prove his worth.
Cut to later in the game, where we learn that Oleander felt worthless to his family, wanting to join the army/air force/navy/etc to prove to his family that he's not worthless. This is the reason he joins the Psychonauts.
We learn through Raz's interactions with Ford how his father hates psychics and was possibly trying to kill him with all the circus training. This is later shown to be Raz's misconception, and that Augustus loves his children and is doing what he thinks is best to protect them.
And then through Oly, we find out that his dad killed his favorite rabbit, claiming that they're good for nothing but food. And Oleander understands that because of his small size, he too is good for nothing, fearing the day his dad turns his butcher's knife on him. While it's not explicitly stated in the game, it's pretty easy to infer that Oleander is wrong and his dad isn't the monster he sees him as.
Speaking of monsters... The final bosses of the game are Oleander's dad, Raz's dad, and Oleander & Raz's dad (twice). Oleander & Raz are so much the same person that their greatest fears can combine seamlessly. They both see their dads as evil caricatures of the real thing with teal/green skin and actively trying to murder them.
Oleander is Raz's future if he were unable to patch things up with his father/family.
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin - Caligosto Loboto, Raz's fear
By now, we've already learned all we need to about Raz at this time, so there's nothing new told to us in this game. What is revealed is Loboto's backstory, specifically focusing on his parents.
We get to see a dollhouse recreation of Loboto's childhood. Here, through Loboto's eyes, it's shown how his parents feared/hated what Loboto was. They refer to him as "devil child" and "little monster." We see the parents discuss Loboto and make the decision to have him lobotomized. While his mom is initially concerned the procedure will hurt him, she ends up stating that she doesn't care.
This is always done while Loboto is within earshot, whether the parents realize it or not.
The only time his parents are shown interacting with him positively is when Loboto is only an infant and before they knew he was psychic. They like the idea of him, not who he really is. This is what Raz believed his family felt about him, and now he gets to see what that actually looks like.
Loboto's life is Raz's nightmare.
(I realize this is shorter than the others, but we don't get a ton of canon info about Loboto)
Psychonauts 2 - Gristol Malik, Raz's opposite
(I've posted about this before btw)
Now this one is especially interesting to me, because, unlike the previous villains, these two characters have almost nothing in common.
Again, by this time, we've already learned much about Raz & his past, but wait! Now there's stuff to be added. Towards the beginning of the game, we get to meet Raz's family and see their dynamic for ourselves. We also get a little more insight into how they live.
After three games total, we can easily jot down a ton of information about Raz. For starters; he is psychic, is poor, has a rough-but-close relationship with his family, is mature for his age (or at least tries to be), genuinely cares for others & enjoys helping them, highly admires the Psychonauts, and can be a little reckless but is usually trying to do the right thing.
Again, unlike with the previous two, we don't get a proper introduction to the villain until the climax. (Yes, he's there the whole time, but pretending to be someone else and we barely hear anything about his true identity, especially if you're not looking at the tiny details.)
But, in true Psychonauts fashion, when we met Gristol, we get to know everything about him. And very nearly everything we learn directly contrasts with Raz. For example; he is a non-psychic, is extremely rich, has no positive relationship with his family (or really anyone else), is immature, doesn't care about others & only cares about what he wants, despises the Psychonauts, and tries to be calculated in his decisions while not caring who gets hurt in the process.
Just about the only thing these two characters share is their Grulovian blood.
Gristol is Raz's foil and the only villain he couldn't help.
Final thoughts
Every single one of these villains is so well thought out in relation to Raz. I hesitate to say which is the "best" villain of the series because I think they all have their part and each plays it perfectly. I also have to mention that none of the villains feel like recycled versions of another villain, each having a unique role and motivation.

There's a really sad part about Fred Bonaparte that I only just considered right now; If he was an orderly long before Psychics were finally gaining acceptance, then he'd probably eventually come to realize that, as Chief Orderly, that he'd be just as responsible for possibly allowed "insane" or psychic people admitted into the asylum to be subjected to what constituted as "mental health" at the time.
Which very likely involves a copious amount of things that would be considered cruel and inhumane now, given what we know about Loboto's situation. And given just how passive and prone to learned helplessness he would have been at the time, he probably went along with these practices because he genuinely didn't consider that what he might have been doing was wrong.
Poor guy's gonna feel absolutely awful once he realizes this, since it's clear that he genuinely was trying to do the right thing, but his own passivity likely lead to a lot of people being subjected to horrors on par to what Loboto likely suffered.
Honestly, there was already some hints of this subconscious bias in his level and his interaction with Crispin Whytehead. Him constantly demeaning Crispin as an invalid (granted with the Napoleon persona), and the above would also put his behavior towards Fred in a very different light. Fred's subconsciously condescending behavior towards a patient who was likely more aware of the torment that he was being put through, and Crispin seeing Fred as an accomplice of his tormentors, and taking his anger and satisfaction at being free out on Fred because he couldn't do anything to the doctors.
I feel like Fred has a lot of ableist biases to work out especially considering he immediately chases Crispin around the asylum the moment his arms are free- like my man you were the one who got upset an "invalid" beat you at a board game. crispin's a jerk but I feel like being smug about that particular instance is warrented after what im sure was a miserable time at the asylum (not to say crispin isnt just also always a jerk anyways tho, im not the biggest fan of him but my point stands)
I think Fred doesn't feel particularly bad for what he did, and probably isn't going to until he REALLY has to start thinking about it. which is only after he & the other inmates are out in the real world and see how everything's changed & advanced in the (amount of time) they were locked away from society. What Fred still considers humane and reasonable is looked down on now by whatever respectable medical facility he might try to get a job at. also his liscence to practice medicine or whatever he needed to be an asylum nurse is probably expired by now. hes gonna have to go to college get more knowledge. which I think would frustrate him and make him lash out more than self reflect at first, he seems like that kind of guy.
that would be interesting now that i type it out, the inmates having to go thru some schooling or something just to catch back up w/the modern world. they could go to a community college together so its not extremely expensive. make some older college friends, rent a dorm together. inmate fans im offering this to you like a friend going pspsps at a cat

Did y’all know that in Dr. Loboto’s tower during the first level of Psychonauts 2, Gristol Malik is actually behind the curtain with Loboto before he comes out and sees Raz?
There are probably pictures of it online, but if you want me to take a poor quality one the next time I run the game I’m happy to do so!
You can only see it if you use the prop flying glitch and shoot yourself down into the opening at the top of the building. As long as you don’t touch the ladder and trigger the cutscene, you can (awkwardly) jump behind the curtain where both of their models are present!

Part 1 of my February sketch dump.  After playing New Super Lucky's Tale, I wanted to doodle General Buttons meeting his obvious inspiration, Napoleon (Psychonauts edition).  After their initial disdain for the copycat in their midst (pun intended), the pair eventually team up to mock poor Fred inside his mind, while Buttons curls up comfortably in Napoleon's lap.
Also, I was watching 8-BitRyan a while back on Youtube, and he was looking up how big someone's forehead should be, and I couldn't help but think of my dear big-headed inmate, Crispin.  So yeah...
Lastly, I was wondering how Loboto's strange mechanical eyes work.  I mean, do they screw into his eye sockets like lightbulbs...?

Gosh, I really like your AU and it gets me thinking about so much in regard to Psychonauts, which makes me very happy :)
So you said that Raz had known Linda since he could climb, and I was wondering, did Loboto create Linda to help with Raz's waterphobia? Like he saw his poor boy being terrified of the water and wanted to make it safe? Or at least not have to worry to much about the boy drowning, considering they are practically surrounded by water.
Makes me wonder, did Raz ever befriend the crows as well? And considering that he lived at Thorny Towers, did he get clairvoyance before he started at camp? And maybe he used the clairvoyance with the help of the crows to prank or just observe
Maybe with the help of the crows he was even able to see what was going on at camp without physically being there?
Moving back to my original tangent, how long has Loboto and Coach worked together? Was Linda a creation specifically for the purpose of stealing children or was she more the reason Coach though Loboto might be the right one for the job? (Like he saw her "kidnapping" a kid(Raz) and wanted to know more)
Makes me wonder, did Loboto ever mention anything about Raz to Coach Olander? Like he's a proud dad, so it kinda feels like he would, but he also not the most neurotypical person so he might just make it sound like Raz is another of his experiments (Like Linda). Resulting in Olander being quiet confused when he sees the boy and connects the dots
Anyway, sorry for making this so long
Thank you for being great and I hope you have a lovely day!
For the topic of Linda, I kind of like the idea you mentioned above about Coach thinking she was "kidnapping" Raz. But I'm pretty sure in canon, that she was created when Coach came to Loboto with his plan. But it could still work, because I have a feeling Linda was created a long time ago in advance so yeh!
The crows are still huge jerks lol they've been pecking Raz's head since he was little. So, no, not really. He learned about the camp when he noticed sounds and the light of a campfire from across the lake, as well as commercials playing on the banged up TV in Gloria's room. He usually used Linda as his main transportation to the woods to watch from the trees.
And Cal always talked very fondly of his son, Raz, to Coach. But yeah, lol Coach always thought Raz was just another experiment or something and not a legit kid, because Loboto never really talked about Raz as if he was a kid. He would always call Raz things like "Adorable clump of atoms" "Bug eyed cutie" "Big headed ball of love" and MANY more.
And thank you so much for asking questions! I'm very happy to answer and your questions really naked me think (in a good way) I'm glad you enjoy the au :)

PN: Loboto headcanons pt. 2
Part one is here.
WARNING: This headcanon list includes mentions of medical abuse, torture, childhood abuse, body horror and unhealthy relationships. Please take care.
-Loboto has some Grulovian blood, though most of it is from areas surrounding Grulovia.  He is an Eastern European mutt, with no definite nationality other than American.
-Sheegor is just his 'funny' nickname for her, originating from the thought that since he is a mad scientist now, he has to have an Igor. Blame the amount of EC Horror he has read.
-Relating to the above, Loboto has a love for old Hammer Horror, Tales of the Crypt and EC Comics. True Psychic Tales he has never read, for obvious reasons.
-Sorta kinda knows Mr Pokeylope is sentient. While he cannot directly speak to him (since Pokeylope is a land creature), the amount of smarts Pokeylope shows is enough for Loboto to think him sentient.
-Because his brain is so ravaged and his powers are the only thing keeping it functioning relatively well, Loboto ends up suffering from severe headaches and migraines when his powers mess up a connection.
-In addition, his mechanical arm can glitch up due to the nerves acting up.
-Loboto does not suffer much from phantom limb syndrome, as his powers have tricked his brain into thinking the arm is still there. But as it is not perfect, episodes can occur.
-Inspired by @babycharmander's fics, for as much business Loboto got as a freelance wetworker, he was far from a reliable one thanks to his impaired mind. Loboto's talents were often sought by people who had already gone through the more professional circles. Loboto was basically an "If you MUST get this done, call this guy at your own risk."
-This is how Gristol ended up hiring him. No one else wanted to touch his plans with a ten-foot pole held up by TK. There simply wasn't enough guarantee of success, people knew Maligula was a loose cannon and ex-Grulovians still remembered the oppression of the Gzar.
-In terms of identity, Loboto would call himself a GNC panromantic demisexual IF he knew what those words were. Given the company he kept was rather homophobic (90s criminal underworld and most likely with Eastern European/Russian types) until Psychonauts 1, he has no idea.
-This will be controversial, but he could easily be Bobby's father. The problem is that he would not know about it, since in addition to a very poor memory, any conception would have happened during quick stress-relieving and non-personal sex during jobs. And given Loboto's reputation, the other half of the equation would have steered VERY clear of him.
-Even with his moral compass back, Loboto is still far from fine. The problem is just how much he can be helped since most of the damage is physical and not mental. This scares Loboto himself a LOT.

"The tooth has gone bad. I repeat, the tooth has gone bad!" Raz shouted, chasing after the mad dentist as his feet pounded against gums and teeth. "Dr. Loboto, stop! We just want to help!" The 10 year old shouted, before suddenly being dropped into a trapdoor as his arm brushed against a vein. He managed to barely save himself using levitation, before a swarm of censors suddenly hounded him. He eventually managed to wriggle his way out, attempting to throw a confusion grenade, when it was suddenly knocked back into his face.
And then, he saw nothing.
His mind was a haze as he attempted to look around. He couldn't really see anything. He knew of the effects of the grenade, but were they really this bad? As his hearing faded back in, he could hear the rush of Sasha using pyrokinesis. He could also hear his girlfriend, Lili, saying something in a panicked tone, but... he still couldn't see. "Raz?! Raz, speak to me, you little lickspittle!" She shouted at him as his hearing faded in. All raz could muster at that moment was a confused mumble. "We need to leave, now. The construct is falling apart." Sasha spoke as the sound of smelling salts cracking open could be heard. And suddenly, he felt himself being thrust back into his own body.
But he still couldn't see.
"Mmh..." Raz groaned as he attempted to sit up, trying to find someplace to put his hand, when he suddenly smacked something in front of him. "Ow! What the heck, Raz?!" Lili called out angrily. "... Lili? Is that you...?" He spoke, retracting his hand as he turned his head to where he last heard her voice. "... Oh, no..." He heard Lili spoke, before Milla spoke up, walking towards him. "Darling, can you hear me?" She spoke gently. Raz nodded, his eyes gazing off. It was then that Milla noticed the green haze clouding his eyes. "Oh, dear... Sasha, Inform the nerve center, we have an issue. Poor boy has been blinded by a confusion grenade..." She spoke as Raz began looking around worriedly. "Wh-What?! What's going on? Am I gonna be okay? What's gonna happen to me?" He asked, struggling as he panicked, only to feel himself being picked up by Milla. "Shhhh..." She hushed him as she held the blind 10 year old close. "Just go to sleep, Razputin.... Everything will be okay."
And so, he slowly fell asleep.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGHHHH CATBOY BLAAAAST *a ray of bright light disintegrates me into ash* *when it clears i have turned into a little cat*
m - name a character you’d like to have for a friend
So many…………. so many…….. i w GASP. I WANT TO HANG OUT WITH FINN MERTENS AND KOYUKI AZUMAYA AT THE SAME TIME. They would put me into life threatening dangerous situations but it would be okay because they can protect me from anything. they are trying to teach me self defense and it is NOT working i have poor reaction time and no muscles. we are also going clothes shopping and getting food. it would be great. genuinely i need to go think about what would happen if finn and koyuki got to hang out now they have. similar experiences. what if you were raised to Go Out And Fight ever since you were a little kid and also you were in some way fundamentally estranged from the common human experience. but also you were just so funny and silly and charming. anyway they’re my friends :)
o - pick a song at random. what character/ship does it remind you of
Alright playlist of nearly one thousand songs let’s see what shuffle brings me. Hmm. Shuffle brought me remains of the day from corpse bride which. Is. Much too specific. What that song reminds me of is corpse bride. Let’s try something else. OH. PORTUGAL - WALK THE MOON WHICH ISNT 100% LYRICALLY APPLICABLE BUT IT ALWAYS MAKES ME THINK OF A REALLY GOOD GRAVITY FALLS AMV I SAW SET TO IT… gives me psychic images of mabel & dipper. Ok let’s get one more song just for fun. oh i got fucking land of the dead by voltaire. isnt that the billy & mandy theme song. or whatever that show is called. anyway i only know that song exists because of my friend Darwin from Tumblr Ask Blog The Reckoning so. you guys heard of the reckoning? it’s good.
u - 3 favorite characters from 3 different fandoms and why they’re your favorites
i wonder if i can come up with all characters who r my favorites for anything other than Kin Reasons. because most of the time, it is Kin Reasons.
sgt frog: dororo. because ever since i was young i have been easily bewitched by sad pathetic loser men.
psychonauts: loboto- ok so like i didnt get the loboto hype at first when i watched the first psychonauts game i was like yeah hes… fine… i guess? hes barely fucking in that though? why do people care? and then iwatched rhombus of ruin and i. i am not immune to the Guy With A Sad Backstory effect. maybe iwould not call him my favorite psychonauts character if i had seen psychonauts more recently and had actually. Seen The Other Characters recently,. but in the period of time ive gone without directly looking at psychonauts at all my emotional response to caligosto loboto has grown exponentially, i am bewitched by his freak tendencies. God damnit i already said bewitched already. Oh well. You know what? Fine,. Let’s make it a running theme. Let’s go for a third
adventure time: BETTY. YOU GUYS KNOW WHY THE FUCK THE GUY WHO PUT SIMON AT THE TOP OF HIS LIST OF NAMES THE SECOND THE F&C TRAILER DROPPED LOVES BETTY GROF. But I would be obsessed with her either way, because ever since I was young i have been easily bewitched by chaotic unhinged in-need-of-professional-help women.
takes a bow. Thank you for coming everybody
