another day, another hater: LS comments edition

You ever get a batshit review on your fic where someone writes an AU of your story and proceeds to tell you they're annoyed you didn't write it how they would've? 💀

[I wouldn't normally share this on tumblr but there's real comedic value in the review, where they speculate how much cooler their Marauders AU would be.]

highlight of this truly unhinged review has got to be:

"Is it just that in tomarryLand, there can only be one (Tom Darko) very smart and deep individual, counterpart to naive/pure/cute, oblivious!trope himbo harry (slightly emo bc mean parents uwu) for the dynamic to hit the right buttons? With background characters all some variation of braindead normies who can never understand them, thus deverving only contempt? Hopefully not."

They read my fic where Tom is a panty-sniffing stalker dweeb who is broadly and thoroughly ridiculed by the entire world and concluded I'm trying to make him a "very smart and deep individual." I fear for our future if this is what passes as smart and deep. 😔 

On a more serious note, if you're going to give unasked for concrit, you've gotta have the courage of your convictions—you've got to read the fic in its entirety. Otherwise, simply DNF and withhold your opinion.

If someone who only read my story halfway is going to tell me stuff like —

"Having reached the end of the chapter, I can see now it's going in the 3edgy5you direction I was fearing with this pair."

and

"I’m assuming all character except Daddy Tom Sr. for which this fic obviously simps will be shown as various shades of stupid and stop now."

— I cannot imagine they really expect me to care; I can only assume they're trying to hurt my feelings, because I didn't write the fic how they would wanted it to go. This isn't criticism or helpful feedback: It is entitlement.

They told me a number of unkind things, based on assumptions that are actually quite false. I do not see these characters as stupid nor do I treat them with contempt. I love ordinary people; I love life itself.

"James is obviously set up as an obstacle!plotpoint poorly disguised as a character"

I actually do not see him that way. He is one of four characters who are the heart of the story, and I love him as much as I love Tom Sr. in the story. And also the story is not going anywhere in the direction this anon implies, which makes them not only look entitled but embarrassingly presumptuous.

While cowardly, I understand why they're on anon. Even they know they're just whining at me for having the audacity to tell the story I wanted to tell, and not the story they wanted to read.

The Seraphina x Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way Lore Explanation (NOT CLICKBAIT) (Finally Coming Clean...)

TLDR: purple, red, poorly written british people, awful self-indulgent fics, emo jokes/stereotypes, etc 🥳

Meet Seraphina Ver. 1! She was my first iteration of Seraphina. As you can tell, she used to be a purple girly :D

When I created Seraphina Ver. 2, she became the red girly we all know and love !!! (But we don't talk about ver 2... /j she experienced the horrors and straight up killed herself (deleted the game file from existence while I was sleeping)

This is all to build up to the fact that Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way (from the smash hit Harry Potter fanfiction My Immortal) is ALSO a purple and red girly. If you search her name up, you can scroll through the fanart and definitely get a fuck ton of Seraphina-core vibes 😭 She wasn’t intentionally inspired but Sera can absolutely come off as an Ebony rip off xD (at least visually)

Early in her creation, my friend and I picked up on this color scheme and started joking that she was Ebony IRL 😜 !! LMFAOO We said that Whitney bullied her because he was a stupid prep!!! >:T U might think she’s a slut, but she’s totally not!! /ref

I was asked tonight, “Would she like my immortal.... .........Unironically.........” And honestly? I think she would </3 Ive mentioned before that Sera writes her own fan fictions & I can assure you that they’d be JUST LIKE THIS. No better quality than MI or the creepypastas she consumes 😭😭 She may be passionate about it, but lord…

Another similarity is that uhmmm obv MI takes place in the Harry Potter Universe and Seraphina is in DOL universe. both of which are set in the UK but written by authors who are. Not british. Sorry everyone 💔 Idk what i’m doing at all but at least I know that there are no hot topics there 💔😔😔

I just want to pick up a fic where harry isn't needlessly cruel to draco in an attempt to make him worthy of any love because of past canonical events. Especially when draco is painstakingly written to have worked so, so hard to change?I am so tired. And ridiculously triggered because you CAN'T filter these out 😔🙏... How do i refine my reading experience? There are no tags for this. The scenes just lie buried in fics. And i have spent so much TIME getting through long fics only for draco to be treated so poorly. It's such a common occurence! Or harry doing something really fucked up without consequence and draco being so accepting because he feels guilt. Like a casual use of veritaserum and then asking really invasive questions outside of what they agreed to be asking each other in what was supposed to be a safe space for the both of them. Or harry just sometimes casually being violent or angry in a way not necessarily part of the narrative... it's just something he does?

I'm not averse to harry with anger and trauma, this is why Balance, Imperfect, Heal Thyself, and A Sword Laid Aside are such treasured reads to me. It's just that they make sense...

So much of the fandom's fics will have something like this... like a really crude violation of draco's boundaries in popularly "wholesome" fics as a stepping stone for the romance. As them getting to know each other? But it really isn't that though... is it.I'm sorry, it's just NOT my thing. I don't know how to filter such things out. How do i keep a respectful distance away from such fics?

I respect the catharsis people find and seek with such scenes and pieces!! They're perfectly valid. I used to be just fine with such a relationship dynamic because they are undeniably good reads. And again, cathartic to see draco on the other end of the stick. But life just happens and somethings i can't enjoy anymore. I just don't know how I'm supposed to navigate my way around them.

Do you have authors that write these two with a more balanced perspective? Or maybe fics that deal with their hurt and pain and trauma with consideration but doesn't end up feeling like either harry or draco have to hurt the other more?

Also, l think you're one hell of an archivist and librarian when it comes to fics. Do you have any tips on how i can find the stories for me and peacefully navigate the ocean of fiction within the drarry tag?

Hi anon! I think I’ve received a shorter version of this ask a while ago but can’t for the life of me find my response so I’m not sure if I’ve already done a specific rec list for you. I love those long fics you mentioned, they all have excellent character arcs.

I totally understand where you’re coming from because I share the sentiment - and I’m pretty sure I know which fic you’re referring to re: the invasive Veritaserum scene. I’m sorry you’re having a rough time trying to filter those scenes out. As you said, they’re buried deep within the fics and to be honest I don’t think there’s an easy way to tag them, because characterization is very subjective and creators might see this topic differently. I might not come off as someone picky because I read and rec lots of stuff but I’m particularly sensitive when it comes to emotional imbalance in fic - I don’t enjoy characters being mean for the sake of it or taking advantage of another character written as meek/pitiful, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth so I try to avoid those if I can. Now I think about it, this might be one of the reasons why I’ve shifted away from long “redemption arc” fics and have been reading more “friends to lovers” and shorts recently, as I find them more emotionally satisfying. Hmm 🤔

Unfortunately I can’t offer any tips in terms of tag filtering - I think that would be extremely difficult and frustrating, especially if you find it triggering. If I were in your shoes I’d solely rely on rec lists made by people in whom I trust and crated within those parameters. Or just avoid the redemption arc altogether and focus on fics where they’re already in friendly terms? I wish I could help more because even a rec list would eventually end and chances are you’ve already read all the ones I have in mind. Let’s see if my followers have any interesting tips that might be helpful in this situation!

I spent New Year's Eve and the first day of the year, sick from exhaustion 😪 ... i... along with the existential crisis of time passing, i was also feeling physically miserable. It was your fic that kept me company. I was completely lost in the world you built. Devoted to the draco you wrote. And dearly fond of your harry. I loved them so, so, much. What a world you've built. I can't believe i welcomed and spent the new year with your story. The piece was such a balm to my soul. I NEEDED to feel something else aside from self-pity...

That said, i must ask, and I hope you'll entertain me 😶:

Who was about to speak that one last line? What we're they about to say? And may i know ~why~ you decided to not have them say it instead? Were they not ready, the both of them for whatever was supposed to be said? In the future... would they have been able to say it fully?

Okay, first of all, thank you SO MUCH for coming into my ask box and brightening my day, my week and my new year with such lovely lovely feedback. I was also really poorly over New Year 😭 and am so glad to know that you found some comfort and relief in my fic (and @ihopeyoubothstaysafefromharm 's art ofc). I've long struggled with my own mental health, and I don't know how i'd have coped without fandom - it's been my escape on and off for 20 years now! I hope you're feeling so much better already ❤️

The last line was Draco's, that much i can tell you for certain. I left it unspoken because i wanted to give the impression that they had more to say, more to unpack and explore, but that there was no rush now they were both free of confines, with limitless time and space. As for the content - well, i did have a sentiment in mind, but i'm afraid that in an effort to retain some mystery i'm going to have to leave it to the reader's imagination! Cages was a lovely fic to write (although a pain to edit); it sort of all unfolded in front of me, the self-indulgent bits (the Malfoys, the clock, Potter) slotting in so neatly as the boys got to know each other, and Joy's wonderful art tying it all together. I am pleased, as pleased as I ever get, i suppose, with how it turned out, and I hope that comes across in the reading 😊

Seeing this entire Miss O mess play out just makes me realize some things and the main one is white edgy people are so fucking annoying. And by that I mean a certain group of blogs that aren't really larries but almost feel like harrie rads? They don't really like H that much anyway but go out of their way to defend every single beard he's had because "the misogyny makes my fake pearls clutch 😔". But I guess I realized those type of people (who also exist on twitter) defend Miss O so much because they perpetuate the same exact feminism she does? They also ignored Kiki's plights when it came to DWD because they knew they couldn't defend that and rather than actually criticize their white goddes, they chose to ignore. And now the nanny story is making her look even worse but somehow white feminists are framing this as "empowering for women"???? If you come out with a joint statement with your ex calling the story pure lies, yet treat serious allegations of abuse and neglect to your children as memes with an "edgy" salad post... I'm supposed to take you seriously? That's not even going into how poorly she treated Florence and threw her under the bus whenever she could. My son is called Harry but we actually call him Harold as a nick name. He hated it at first but now he answers to it happily. His brothers call him Hazza or Haz. Anyway, aside from all of that I was feeling poorly yesterday so didn't watch it (felt nauseous enough already) but reading all about it this morning. Left a few comments on the DM which is still going insane this morning on all their articles. More damage limitation to come on this I fear. I mean were they expecting us all to forgive?

what I love about Harry’s performance is how he’s evolved to fill up the stage with his performance and when he’s not on the stage, he’s missed because there’s no other solid distraction. With these larger venues, I do sometimes (not all the time) want to push him to think like a theater kid. As much as he has in him, it’s impossible for him to be all over that stage and at the back of the venue at the same time without some help. Now what that is, is up to him. He did it a bit with the band and horns at Coachella. Doesn’t mean he’s doing poorly now. Just means I’m curious how he could level up as his venues get bigger as well. But maybe this is another reason to gatekeeper our floppy, charismatic energized bunny and keep him strictly in arenas and smaller venues. 😉 haha

yeah i do not want to see how he evolves as his venues get bigger at all, i’m good as it is, but i know it’s a lost case 😔

Harry and Draco play for the Falmouth Falcons, a professional quidditch team known for its questionable sportsmanship. While they've been sleeping together casually for months, Draco wonders if Harry's means of coping with his past might prevent them from having more.

Occasionally, Draco finds his judgment clouded by thoughts of a slow morning in bed, tangled limbs on the sofa or whispered secrets in the dark. Unwilling to process their implications, he dismisses them quickly, shoving them deep in the recesses of his mind like a boggart in a closet.

Happy happy birthday @graymatters! A little birdie told me today was your day and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to rec this wonderful fic that I’ve revisited just recently. Friends with benefits my beloved!! Everyone and their mom knows I’m utterly gone for this trope - and I happen to love Quidditch players just as much, so of course this would be right up my alley! Pretty much like every Sara fic, this pulled me into this universe immediately: the atmosphere is so lively and dynamic, the fun camaraderie among the team players, the competition thrill helping build anticipation, and gosh am I here for beater Harry! Not a concept we see often in fic - if ever - but I love how it allows him and Draco to play for the same team (in more ways than one 😏) and forges a type of dynamic that leans more towards friendship than rivalry. The fact that Draco’s opening line is “Yes or no, Potter?” as he finishes undressing lives rent free in my head, what a way to set up the casual and sexy tone!!

What I love about this fic is how effortlessly Sara established their chemistry, a mix of fond familiarity and intimacy while still being casual. Casual lovers with feels is my new fave trope, everyone else can go home 🙌 I love the soft urgency of them falling together, it feels very organic but there’s delicious pining underneath, the yearning so careful as not to ruin what is already there. You’ll also find here a few of my (other) favorite things such as: TATTOOED HARRY (!!!), locker room UST, supportive Ron, angry Harry against the world (always a bonus in my book) and finding himself at Draco’s doorstep, falling in bed together and the first “stay” request ahh I love it so much. These characters are tender to each other and yet full of fire and personality, just the way I adore.

This is a beautiful story that combines fun and sexy times with sweet domesticity and a very interesting glimpse of Harry’s vulnerable side and how he’s poorly managing the war trauma. And our smitten Draco sees it and reaches out in an exchange that made my heart ache. The ending may feel open and bittersweet for some people but I thought it was perfect for this story because it highlights the deeper understanding they share. Sex is fun and all but get yourself someone that sees Harry like Draco does 😔🙌
