A few notes on Sadoc

The character of Sadoc Burrows was introduced in the first episode of The Rings of Power, reading his book, contemplating the “strange” stars and scolding a curious Nori - who, in episode 2, snitches laterns from under his nose, together with Poppy.

According to the LOTR Fandom Wiki, his occupation is “Trailsman of the Harfoot tribe”, and as such he watches over his tribe and quite literally keeps everyone “in line”, not only during the migrations. In episode 3 we saw him leading the chant of “Nobody goes of trail - and nobody walks alone”.

He is literate, a social and probably a spiritual leader, too, and also the one who has the last word, e.g. judges - so ultimately the one deciding who will be “left behind”. He is certainly not keen on sentencing his fellow harfoots to death, as we see when Malva - who is clearly in a position of at least some power - wants Nori to be “decaravaned”. He puts Nori’s family to the end of the caravan though, which, as we learn quickly, is the most dangerous position during migrations.

It’s clearly a collective punishment based on kin liability, a tool that enforces immense pressure on individuals and that seems especially severe and certainly effective in small, thigh-knit societies like the harfoot tribe, where individuals rely heavily on their family and closest friends (sadly, that concept is [still] a very real thing in some places).

Nori, Poppy, Largo and the others are not afraid of Sadoc though. They know he can be argued with (or can he?) and that, in the end, he is supposed to decide in favor of the “general well-being”, so to speak. He also has a lot of humour (his speach/sermon in episode 3 is not by accident a huge callback to Bilbo’s speach at THE PARTY :).

His name, by the way, is not an invention of the new show, there already has been a “canonic” Sadoc (Brandybock), who is listed in the LOTR appendices (LOTR Fandom Wiki). Interestingly, there is also a biblical “Zadok”, “the High Priest of Israel during the reigns of David and Solomon” (Wikipedia).

I am very much looking forward to seeing more of Sadoc Burrows and the conflicts a young harfoot girl might get him into ... and also quite hopeful that the show will focus even more on group dynamics within the harfoot tribe when it comes to making hard decisions - probably with Sadoc at the center, a character, as we learned, that values (his) peace and quiet very, very much.
