Holy shit this book is fucking wild. I did not know what this book was about so it was quite the shock to find out she is a pedo lol. Like I was not expecting to read about a grown women having sex with fourteen year olds like whoa.
It was a good book, I liked the story and it held my attention the whole time even through the longer chapters. I also thought the main character was pretty funny. Not sure if she was meant to be but I chuckled here and there. There was something I didn’t like though and it happened a few times. She would be like “we never thought it would happen like this” and then explain something bad that happened like getting caught or whatever and like maybe once that lead up works but I feel like it was way too many times that she used that same line. Maybe I’m over exaggerating and I didn’t like count how many times it happened so it’s possible in very much over shooting, but regardless, it was too many times for me lol.
If you like weird and disturbing books, this is a good one for that for sure. If you’re more sensitive to certain topics, look up the trigger warnings please.

Ooo, Helen is vying for Ares' position. This will be interesting.
I thought this story was going to be between just Achilles and Patroclus, but Katee is throwing Helen into the mix.
You know, it's funny. I didn't plan on using this for the PopSugar Reading Challenge, I was just finishing the series. But it's funny how many prompts it fits! That happened a lot last year, too.

PopSugar Reading Challenge #35: A Book With Magical Realism
"A House at the Bottom of the Lake" by Josh Malerman
I've been wanting to read this one ever since it was recommended to me by a friend over a year ago. I love the idea of exploring a house at the bottom of the lake!
This friend did conveniently leave out that it is primarily a love story (if you know me, you know I avoid romances of any kind like the plague). So I was a bit disappointed at that aspect. Still, it is a vital part of the story, and I begrudgingly enjoyed the symbolism, the connection between the main characters' love and the house.
It's a quick read (or maybe I just thought that because I was stuck at the airport for 3 hours with nothing better to do... gotta love delayed flights), and I still can't get that lake-bottom house out of my mind. It's such a cool concept and I really felt it was very well written!
If you like exploring weird shit (or teenage first loves), please please please give this a read!

In relation to my 2023 Popsugar Reading Challenge, I finished two books for January:
A book you meant to read in 2022: Breasts and Eggs - Mieko Kawakami; and
A book you bought from an independent bookstore: The Cinderella Murder - Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke
So for February, I'll be finishing two more books for the following categories:
A book by a first-time author: The Silent Patient
A celebrity memoir: Crying in H-Mart

Popsugar reading challenge: A book that is a complete sentence
Everyone in my family has killed someone- by Benjamin Stevenson
I borrowed this book without realising that it is by the author who wrote "everyone in my family has killed someone", which I read a few pages before deciding that I didn't want to read it anymore. However, the book fit the prompt and I thought that the idea is much more interesting than the previous one. After all, a train full of crime writers.
However, this book is actually a direct sequel to the said book above and I did not enjoy it.
1- The book constantly pokes fun at the rules of crime novels. The problem is that the author does this in a really bad way. Instead of being tongue in check, it comes out as extremely condescending.
2- All the characters are unlikable. The main character also spends pretty much the whole book whining.
3- The crime was meant to be solved with clues, yet this is not done. The narrator just suddenly becomes omnipotent. Unlike crime novel, where the main character does have some sort of revelation due to what they stumbled upon, Ernest just magically works everything out. Throughout the book, when he makes questions or search for clues, we never had a sense of him actually understanding any of the symbolism.
4- The epilogue is super random with his girlfriend suddenly writing the epilogue because it is meant to be a story. The randomness of this is actually worse then if this whole thing is a dream.
*SPOILER* I was really hoping the main character did get killed off for real.
I managed to finish the book by thinking that it would get better, but it did not. At the very least, the overall plot kept me curious enough to continue reading. But I do not recommend this book or the author's other book.

The 2023 Popsugar Reading Challenge
I’ve done this challenge every year since it started in 2015, and I have to say that I’m disappointed in the prompts this year. They all seem to be recycled, and there are two that explicitly call for rereads. I’ll still likely participate since it’s tradition, and I’ll likely read enough to complete it, but I won’t stress over it.

OKAY!
So, new format. I think I will be playing around with different looks on this "blog" or like whatever you would call this? It's tbh cringe to call this a blog like who am I Gossip Girl like literally no. Anyway so yeah if anyone actually reads these, there will be a bit of a transition stage for an unknown amount of time lol.
And here is the review now:
3.75⭐
So this is like the shortest book ever and I was hoping it will get me out of my reading slump. Spoiler: it didn't. I'm not entirely sure if I didn't love this book because of the slump but I also didn't hate it. It was fun and I love an unreliable narrator. I think the beginning was a little boring but the ending was interesting and wild.
It's literally like 130 pages, just read it.

I read this so fast I didn't have time to make more notes. This felt a little slow compared to Morning Glory Milking Farm, but it didn't detract from the story at all. It was really good! I enjoyed seeing the story again from a different point of view. I also enjoyed seeing a romance exclusively from the "hero's" point of view. Rourke fell HARD and maybe was a little obsessed, but everyone involved is okay with it, so I can't judge too hard.
I love Cambric Creek, and look forward to more installments!
"Rourke thought that seemed a tad optimistic and was just a way to insinuate minotaurs were superior when measured up to, say, orcs. Well, definitely superior to orcs like Khash."
I will have no bad talking Khash, Rourke!
-
It's interesting to see this side of the MGMF story. I like that one a lot, and I liked Rourke.
I like him less here, but only because I know the place he's in after a bad break up. It's hard to look for someone when you think you're broken and you slightly hate other people's relationships.
It's okay, buddy. You'll be okay.
-
"Why don’t I deserve to be happy right now? This version of me, the person I am today. Why isn’t she just as deserving of love as anybody else?

Reading Challenge Update – First Quarter Check-In
I’m trying hard to keep track of my reading challenges this year, something I don’t usually do. But I figured a quarterly check-in was the best way to track my progress and hold myself accountable, so here we are taking a look at the first quarter of 2024 — I am still reeling that we are already 3 months into the year! And surprisingly, I’m doing pretty good! Here’s a recap of the challenges I’ve…

PopSugar Reading Challenge #47 (or Advanced Prompt #2) - A Book With 24 Letters in the Title
"Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne" by David Gaider
What an absolute stroke of luck this book has exactly 24 letters in the title! I've been meaning to read all the Dragon Age books this year (starting with a reread of the first two) and couldn't possibly hope to cram any of them into this challenge. And yet... here we are!
As before, I love this book. Probably because of my ongoing Dragon Age obsession, and the obvious link to the first game, Dragon Age Origins. I had completely forgotten how funny the book was! A rebel prince who has a habit of falling off his horse - it's a thing he does. Snarky banter from all sides. Flemeth being... well, herself.
And I have always claimed my favorite Dragon Age characters is a dwarf named Nalthur, who makes a lovely cameo here (and really almost no where else in the franchise... Unless you count his stuff appearing in Inquisition DLC). Now I really want a book about the Legion of the Dead...
To be completely honest, I was shocked at how well written the book is. On the one hand, Gaider was the lead writer of Dragon Age. On the other hand, who expects a well written book based on a video game? But some of the quotes made me jealous of his writing. "Deep down inside of him there was steel. He embraced it, tasted its bitter edge and let it shut out the whirlwind inside of him." I can't express how much I love that passage.
Look, I'm biased. I love this book. I love Maric. I hate Loghain (but only because he's so well written, and love that so many like him... he's well-rounded enough to be loved OR hated). I'm obsessed with Dragon Age. I will probably read this one for a third time someday. Absolutely gave it a 5 stars on Goodreads.
