"As with Nature, with You" (2022, watercolor) - In the summer, Marianne and Héloïse would probably go on a picnic and lay on the grass under a tree canopy. Of course, they will bring the book. uwu

1. "It is important to have an abortion and to represent the importance of representing it. Because this is what happened by cutting women off from the opportunity to be artists. They did not represent their private lives, they did not represent their desire, they did not represent their bodies, they did not represent their lives. And all these images are missing from history, but they are especially missing in OUR life. It’s Annie Ernaux who said that there is not a museum in the world where there is a painting called "The abortion”.
So this scene may happen a little abruptly but it’s not to forget that art creates memory...”
This is my favorite painting. It has never been completed." - Céline Sciamma
2. Untitled, 1998, by Paula Rego. Part of her "Abortion Series" that she created as a response to a failed referendum to legalize abortion in Portugal. Rego's paintings in the series have been credited with changing public sentiment so that a second referendum to legalize abortion in 2007 was successful.
We remember the jubilance of our Argentinian sisters when abortion was legalized in that country in December 2020. Mexico ruled that abortion is not a criminal act in September 2021--in reaction to a copycat law following Texas' shameful law criminalizing abortion. Colombia legalized abortion in February 2022. Meanwhile, folks in the US are bracing for the end of Roe v Wade, when our right to have an abortion would no longer be protected.

"We think that not only gay people or queer people live in closets. Everybody does. We all tend to put ourselves into these boxes, these traps. And so what we tried to do is we tried to define as many of the characters through the sort of trap that they were making out of their lives. Getting out of the closet was meant to take on a bigger meaning than just the typical gay meaning."
- Lana Wachowski
Characters escape closets, ropes, and ties in Bound, named by 81 of our responders as one of their top favorite lesbian/queer films. It's earned its place in the lesbian canon for its queer subversion of film noir tropes, no doubt also helped by its excellent use of Susie Bright's advice in the scene involving tattoos 😉.
Don't miss our discussion with our friends' podcast, Sapphic Culture Club, about Bound in the upcoming episode this Friday, June 24. We talked about labryses, red trucks, the Battle of the Undershirts, and much more!

my short and sweet part in the Zoom meetup with Noémie Merlant. ✌😊
it was supposed to be only a 1hr meeting, that turned into 2hrs. 😮 everyone else had awesome questions and Noémie took the time to answer each one.
oh, to be in that moment was privilege enough for dorky me. 🙃 i really had no question throughout the whole thing, believe it or not. i have that "bye April" and Noémie's little wave embedded in my brain though. 🤗
if you wanna see what i'm talking about, this special meet and greet is now available online. here's the YouTube link: https://youtu.be/sRb7NpDEDcc
