"After a while, you’ll see her when you think of me."
I liked the part with the portrait.
Beautiful, tragic, and devastating. Portrait of a Lady on Fire took its time to draw me in with a meticulously paced emotional escalation, but by the time it ended (with a masterfully heartbreaking long take) I was utterly captivated.
Strong, emotive performances throughout, especially between Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. The sparse use of dialogue and total lack of score placed an almost tangible significance on every exchange between them, and the use of the Vivaldi song as a recurring, diegetic motif was a great touch. I found the introduction of dreamlike visuals in the latter half a bit surprising, but it worked well.
The scene in which they discussed the story of Orpheus and Eurydice was particularly good. I loved the way Héloïse's interpretation, of choosing the memory over the person, turned prophetic. The moment near the end when Marianne heard Héloïse's voice plea for her to look back, echoing the story and symbolising the moment their relationship became a memory, was simply perfect.
An incredibly moving story. Highly recommended.
