i grew up being kinda drawn to stories with nice sibling dynamics and specially with an older brother figure. and i always kinda thought of it as me wanting to have an older brother or a figure like that, which yeah makes sense, i wish my older cousin was close to me. my parents had two kids, me and my younger sister, and she`s one of my best friends since we were little and we were raised as two sisters.

And the joy i fucking had when i saw that they used gender neutral pronouns for the protagonist AND for the characters that use they/them!!

Like Holy shit that's a huge step for stuff in portuguese to have other pronouns. In a moment where any characters who use they/them being reffered with no pronouns in portuguese, this is a big thing

Neopronouns Flag Re-Desing

I made this new flag design because the flag representing the most popular neopronouns wasn't very pleasing to my eyes and I found the meanings a bit vague and not very related to the neopronouns themselves. Not that there is a problem with that, just create an alternative to deal with these "problems".

Color Meanings

Green: Represents Diversity, and I think it's important as there are different types of neopronouns, and different types of ways in which you use pronouns for comfort, so it's important that you know that there is diversity between pronouns

Light Green: Represents Freedom, its about you can use whatever you feel comfortable with as a pronoun, it's almost freedom, it's as if you weren't obligated to use popular pronouns to refer to yourself.

White: Represents Recognition, because neopronouns are generally viewed very negatively by people who only use pronouns recognized by the language, and the idea would be for people to see that neopronouns don't hurt anyone and that they need to be taken seriously along with the people who use them.

Yellow: Represents Harmony, everything that a person who uses neopronouns deserves, everyone deserves to live in peace and harmony, but for this to happen people have to stop having an opinion on how people live and how they decide to be, being themselves, and Learning to respect them, well, it's not that difficult.

Orange: Represents Community, we are a group of people who are attacked for not only using the pronouns recognized by the languages, we need to be united so that anything that tries to stop us, we overcome, community is one of the very important aspects, but not just queers, but as in society itself, we walk together because we are better together

Symbol meanings

I was researching a little about pronouns, and I discovered that there is a symbol that represents pronouns, and also neopronouns, but I found this symbol a bit strange, such as the fact that it only works in the English language, and I, as a person who speaks Brazilian Portuguese, I felt a little left out, but I know that the person who made the symbol didn't do it with bad intentions.

So I decided to reuse the symbol in my own way, I realized that the part that represented the neorponomes looked like a flower, with just a few petals, so I used that to make a metaphor. Neopronouns are diverse and colorful like flower petals, so I placed a flower in the center of the flag with the neopronou symbols around it, using an old symbol, along with a possible symbol/metaphor for people who use neopronouns.

So this is kind of an odd question. For context, Portuguese is my second language and I'm studying to (hopefully) be able to teach it.

How do gender neutral pronouns work? I know there are neopronouns, but the list I found is really long. How do I know what to use to talk about my nonbinary friends when I'm speaking Portuguese?

I want to be able to be respectful to queer people in Portuguese and teach students how to do it too, but I am massively in over my head at the moment.

About the gender neutral language I’m still learning it myself so do take what I say with a pinch of salt, but usually you will replace the A or the O with an E

So for beautiful we would have:

Masculine: Lindo

Feminine: Linda

Neutral: Linde

The biggest exception for this that I can think now is for our version of they/them, because we use E in the end of ELE which is HE, so in this case we use an U, so we end with something like this:

He/him - ele/dele

She/her - ela/dela

They/them - elu/delu

Also there are many other ways that people may use, such as neo pronouns, this are the pronouns im seeing people use more, but they are definitely not the only option!

🌈 – Gay transman who uses he/him/his and is 50/50 on neopronouns but does use sky–themed pronouns. He doesn’t like when Twilight refers to him using neopronouns though since he loves the feeling of pride when Twilight refers to him as his husband.

💨 – As mentioned above, married to Twilight. He prefers to have Twilight stand over him and also likes to feel small since Twilight, being an Alicorn, is larger than the other’s. Prefers to be the one who cooks and cleans despite his tight schedule as a famous equestrian athlete.

🌈 – Has hyperactive ADHD and is very egotistical, thought it calms down around his husband since he loves to show off his partner and his achievements.

💨 – Likes to be the dominant mate during breeding season despite the big difference in size, thought it’s not like Twilight minds. He doesn’t know any pegasus mating rituals and ends up sporadically flapping his wings awkwardly before deciding to just nuzzle against Twilight and asking if he can take him to bed.

🌈 – A hunk and bulky from excessive exercise. Despite his expertise in certain fields, such as flying and running, he had very little experience in flying despite it kind of being part of pegasus athlete training in case you fall into a body of water. He swims a bit better than a dog and is training himself to swim but prefers to lay in the water and float around.

💨 – Fluffy since Cloudsdale, being in the sky, tends to be colder but cuts his coat to be more sleek in order to fit into his uniform since this is a normal practice for flying athletes. If he doesn’t cut his coat he practically fluffs up and looks like a Highland cow with long, blue fur.

🌌 Twilight Sparkle✨

🌌 – Genderflux and prefers he/him/his and is fine with the princess title. Androgynous with long curls that basically hide his face though his is a bit masc–leaning with a bit of a deeper voice.

✨ – Basically equestrian Andrea Bocelli. Knows Italian, French, Spanish, English, Latin and Portuguese and knows how to play the piano, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. Also prefers classical music and will sometimes sing to himself or Rainbow while dancing slowly and sensually with him.

🌌 – Very fluffy and doesn’t mind his abundance of fur since it keeps him warm when he spends more time in his house which he prefers to keep at lower, cooler temperatures. He also loves when Rainbow uses him as a blanket.

✨ – Introverted and autistic with his special interest being history and magic as well as the look and aesthetic of older, aged books and writing that verges on cursive. He knows a bunch of random, ridiculous or absurd facts that he likes to rant on about. Rainbow doesn’t mind because god, his husband is the reason why he still manages to exist.

🌌 – Likes to keeps his wings all pretty since they’re the peacock tails of pegasi. His wings was impressive and they always catch Rainbow’s attention when he stretches or rests a wing on him.

✨ – Had a son with Rainbow though it wasn’t done sexually–In a way, it was asexual reproduction; Alicorn’s can use their magic to create foal’s and the traits are random unless other mates are involved which is how he created his son, Midnight Lightning.

💨Velocity Eclipse 🌑

🌃 – Around 7 and doesn’t care about gender other than being referred to as a ‘man’. Since he was 7, he’s had a crush on and basically but not officially dating Starry Berry though the relationship becomes official and more serious later on. Says he’s gay because Starry Berry is genderflux.

⚡– As an adult, he becomes part of a group that is akin to a next generation Mane 6, though what he represents is up for questioning. He could be the leader of the group but his group has more than one Alicorn.

🌃 – Inherited his parent’s fluffy coat and, when not taken care of, his fur can engulf him like a ball of softness. His fur is awfully soft, the same as Rainbow’s, and he and his father both like to have their partner’s run their hands through their fur.

⚡– Has a bit of toxic masculinity and hates doing anything he deems feminine but will do it if Starry asks to because he doesn’t want to upset the love of his life.

🌃 – Is a himbo, though Starry will always try to subtly correct him so he won’t feel embarrassed. He also likes to show off his bulky and muscular physique since he liked to spend time at the Apple farm and befriended Big Mac when he found out that Big Mac was meek and felt the need to protect him from any rude people.

⚡– Although he says that he works out and does labor and whatever, he actually prefers to stay on the Apple farm to help out since the Apple family is basically his family when his father’s are busy. Younger members of the family consider Midnight an older brother or older cousin figure.

🍯Sweet Fruitcake 🍅

🍯 – Cisgender gay man and is honestly living just for his pretty little husband.

🍅 – Rugged and gruff with many scars from work on his expansive farm which grows fruits, vegetables, and livestock which has also caused his hooves to become callous. He doesn’t like to ‘pamper him like a prissy little lady’ but his husband insists and will even do it himself and who is Fruitcake to refuse him?

🍯 – Is, of course, literally humongous, probably a Dutch Draft or just, y’know, any other draft horse. His color scheme is similar to Applejack’s but he’s not related to her but is Apple Bloom’s cousin who occasionally checks on her since their family practically disappeared suddenly.

🍅 – Used to hate Pegasi and Unicorn’s before he met and fell for his now husband, Lunar Forest and allowed him to live on his farm. Eventually, they married and Lunar made their daughter, Starry Berry.

🍯 – Fruitcake fills both the ‘hard–working spouse’ and ‘stay–at–home spouse’ role since he gets dirty while handling livestock and also cooks and cleans despite Lunar insisting that he should cook and clean so Fruitcake won’t be so overworked and he’s starting to get around to the idea.

🍅 – Is friends with Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, and Viktor; Rainbow helped him after he got injured, Twilight used magic to cure a drought, Rarity helped him get dressed up for his wedding, and Viktor also hates monarchies.

🌕Lunar Forest🌲

🌕 – Genderflux and uses he/him/his especially because it’s easier for Fruitcake and the title ‘husband’ makes him blush. Also, Alicorn’s definitely all are Genderflux since, as powerful celestial beings, gender is truly beyond them and they use them to humor other species.

🌲 – Fluffy though not as much since it doesn’t puff out like Rainbow or Midnight, more like Twilight’s. He has a color scheme similar to Luna but mixed with earthy greens and browns. He adores flora and fauna and will enter the woods and bring back random items and trinkets for his husband as a way of showing his love or he’ll simply lay on Fruitcake to keep him warm and safe.

🌕 – All shy and flustered around his husband since that Southern drawl and rugged looks get him smiling and nuzzling against his lover, embarrassed. Though he does try to be more confident by doing things such as flirty and sensual comments or putting an arm on Fruitcake to try and seem all cool–Never works though.

🌲 – Likes jewelry and feeling fancy which has led him to becoming Rarity’s best friend in fashion and a test–dummy for her newest pieces of fashion since he’s as androgynous as Twilight.

🌕 – Speaking of Twilight, he mentored Twilight when Celestia hired him when Twilight first studied under Celestia. Lunar had always had a parental instinct and he knew Twilight would have so much potential when he was older, he just had to unlock it!

🌲 – Older than Celestia and Luna and like to oversee them and bring up older laws and whatnot–Basically working as an advisor to make sure they know what the people desire most. He also

⭐Starry Berry🫐

⭐ – Genderflux and doesn’t know what to call herself but does use the gay label.

🫐 – Has autism and an anxiety disorder and is selectively mute and prefers to hide behind others, when she was younger it was her parent’s but now it’s her boyfriend, Midnight Lightning.

⭐ – Just a lil bit fluffy and very, very soft. She has Fruitcake’s fur color and Lunar’s hair color and knows she can be powerful but is too scared to get hurt if she does use her magic to the fullest potential. Is also too scared to fly so Midnight will hold her.

🫐 – Likes to eat a lot but is shy in public though Midnight does encourage her because he likes having to spend a lot of time just being beside his lover.

⭐ – Lives with her boyfriend in an apartment on the ground because, as much as Midnight wants to live in Cloudsdale, it’d be too much of a struggle having to carefully and slowly fly down every morning when they’re both extremely tired and stores are much closer.

🫐 – Sometimes helps on her father’s farm though her magic creates ‘Astral Fruit’ and Astral ‘Vegetables’, which is basically just space food which Twilight is currently studying after Celestia requested it.

👗Rarity💎

👗 – Cishet and very femme with a love for dresses, skirts, and everything else she considers ‘fashionable’ and ‘chic’.

💎 – Hourglass figure with sleek fur that’s heavily cared for with a morning and night routine and a strict diet which she only cheats when she’s heavily distressed or has a large work load.

👗 – Cannot handle stress or criticism since she has Rejection Sensitivity Disorder and any non–positive comment makes her irritated and can easily anger her. She’s had multiple times where she’s stormed home, slammed the door, and slumped on the couch, sobbing and messily eating junk food while stomping and degrading herself.

💎 – Loves the mysterious vigilante type which has led her to love V from ‘V is for Vendetta’ and any similar characters. She always daydreamed of marrying a man like V or being seduced by one.

👗 – Is very proud of her respected status and high net worth and compares herself to those she considers the best, which includes people like Andrea Bocelli and Marilyn Monroe, who she looks up to like gods.

💎 – While at a ball as a special guest and fashion designer and advisor, Rarity was talking to a masked man who was sitting on a balcony railing when panic broke out since the monarch was frothing at the mouth and choking to death. When she looked back to the man, he had given her a small wave and slid off the balcony, leaving her shocked. She looked down and had seen him land safely on the ground, running off into the night. She didn’t say anything about the suspicious man, left feeling butterflies in her stomach.

🎭 – Doesn’t really use labels but knows he uses he/him/his, it/it's, and neopronouns and he’d say he’s straight, sure.

🖤 – Has a darker coat, near black but not fully and has a sleek coat of fur. His tail is short but his mane is kept long since he loves to style it to allow for flexible identity shifts.

🎭 – Hates the monarchy and had caused chaos for multiple past, cruel, and unfit monarchs but hasn’t attacked Celestia or Luna since he considers them fit for their role since he sees them as respectable, responsible, and ready leaders. Though, if that changes, he will not hesitate to ‘correct them’.

🖤 – Is a Unicorn and has a transatlantic (British) accent like his wife, Rarity. Like Lunar, he doesn’t mind being a model for his beloved when she needs a man to try on a suit or someone to model a certain outfit.

🎭 – Loves to accompany his wife to high–end events since he finds it entertaining to talk to people who are unaware that he’s the elusive ‘monarch slayer’.

🖤 – Loves to pamper his wife with salon visits and hair and skin products. Whatever she wants, she’ll get with a simple ask. Though Rarity does say that she has enough money to get her own items and she does love to spoil him back, creating an equal balance of spoiling each other rotten.

Hey friendo, I was hoping for some advice! The post you reblogged about neopronouns and other cultures/languages- I noticed in your tags you said to use 'latine' and not 'latinx.' Is that the generally preferred term? I've only ever seen latinx, and am a baby in learning Spanish, so I just don't have a lot of knowledge about addressing people properly outside of the m/f gendered terms/conjugations, but I want to! Pls give me some pointers, history, context, culture etc 🙏

oh heya there! so, the main issue about using the x in latinx is that it literally doesn't make sense in latin languages. it is a word that is impossible for the latine speakers to come up on their on as that "X" sound only exists in spanish or portuguese when surrounded by vogals, and would NEVER end a word, meaning that the ones that created and use the latinx term aren't even latines themselves, they are white anglo people! so when white queers use the term latinx, it almost feels like a slur, as it a term created by the other majority to label a minority in a way they don't approve!

the use of latine (and other gendered words that you see with -e) happens as both Portuguese and Spanish use -o as masculine and -a as feminine (amigo <- masculine, amiga <- feminine).

Historically, masculine terms were used to denominate ambiguity and neutrality, however with the push of the non-binary native speakers that weren't comfortable with masculine terms, new vogals began to be explored to serve as a neutral term, and -e was the easiest one use! now if you want to use neutral terms in Spanish, try switching the -a -o for -e! so it becomes (amigo <- masculine, amiga <- feminine, amigue <- neutral)

if we are talking about neopronouns... i know more about the portuguese ones, but i researched a bit bout spanish ones, so it's ok. so to start, in Brazilian Portuguese the traditional 3rd person pronouns are Ele/Dele (he/him) and Ela/Dela (she/her). When we were creating the new neutral pronoun, the other vocals were considered, however the -i in (eli/deli) sounded too much as a high pitched ele/dele, so it was scraped. Elo/Delo was better however the 'o' sound was too uncomfortable to say, so it was also scraped. In the end, the Elu/Delu was chosen as the neutral pronoun! as an example let's take the "she's my friend" sentence:

"ela é minha amiga" <- feminine

"elu é minhe amigue" <- neutral

Elu/Delu work the same way 3rd person They/Them do, and just like there's other neopronouns in english to signify neutrality like Xe/Xem, theres also other ones in portuguese like Ile/Dile, Ilu/Dilu and many more!

now talking bout spanish, i know about the equivalent to 3rd person They, which would be "Elle". El is masculine, Ella is feminine, and it appears that the native speakers combined both to create a neutral pronoun, it being Elle. let's take a sentence as an example of use " they are my friend" in Spanish become "elle es mi amigue"

therefore, if you want to be nice to your fellow latine queers and not sound like "im a white anglo speaker and i know more about your language than you", please use "Latine" instead of "Latinx"!

yes! i’m not too knowledgeable on less common neos, but “elu” is the most common gender-neutral pronoun! i think “ilu” is also pretty widely used. so instead of ela/dela (she/her), it’d be elu/delu and ilu/dilu, and so on and so forth

Do other languages have neopronouns?

[mod coffee: that's a tough question... i cant speak for all languages besides portuguese, so i'll just talk about my own experience with being non-binary in two languages.] [you see, in english we have neutral pronouns as default, they were there for a damn long time so they're already more natural to your language, meaning that neopronouns is... "less on the norm" so to say] [in portuguese we didnt even have neutral language until just some years ago. i think the first time i personally heard of it was in 2019? later on, in 2020, projects began to spread in congress to ban neutral language] [it's still heavily criticized and only in the first few months of 2023, more than 10 bills against it were started. and of course it got worse along the rest of the year] [so, having said that, you can imagine that neutral language here is treated as harshly as neolanguage in english-speaking countries] [i personally, use he/they/it in english, and ele/elu in portuguese, elu being our version of neutral pronouns.] [now that i gave you that vision, i can say that.. aat the current moment, we dont have neopronouns how you understand them, but neutral language is the best we have now. as you can imagine too, neogenders and mogai isnt really a thing here, at least not yet]

in lusophone communities, people associate neopronouns with xenopronouns or nounself pronouns (but they are very performative in portuguese because our language isn't only about pronouns, eg. suffixes (-e/-o/-a) and grammatical articles (a/o/ê, um/uma/ume)). but elu and ile are technically neopronouns. and delu & dile are contractions, not pronouns lol. ê is a neoarticle (neoartigo, pesquise). and people try to call neosuffixes as neodesinences but not every suffix/word ending is a desinence. suffix is also a generalization.

enfim, I study it a lot because it's part of my hyperfocus/hyperfixation. and these are forms of neolanguage (neolinguagem, pesquise). in spanish community they reject the term because it sounds like neolengua (newspeak/novílingua, a term used by (anti)stalinists). neolanguage includes neoarticles and neosuffixes, neoconjuncts (neoconjuntos, such as u/ilu/-y).

some people also reject the term gender-neutral language as a way to group all neolanguage, because not every neopronoun is neutrally gendered and they try to unlink/unleash gender from it (because women also use neopronouns and it doesn't make them any less female because of it). but sometimes I find these conceptualizations as too idealistic. in an everyday world, I prefer handy terms or to be simple for lay people. more like homocore situationism

Unfortunately I think it’s going to take a long time until people actually start using those pronouns (besides the LGBTQ+ community).

But this is very interesting to know, thank you for the information!
