I recently got my hands on a grocery store variegated mini jade/elephant bush (portulacaria afra) plant for around $5 (US dollars). The entire seedling pot was actually made of three individual plants, so I split up the pot, adding two of the plants to a larger outdoor box arrangement and planting the third into a small 2" pot for eventual bonsai purposes.
Out of curiosity, I decided to see if I could encourage a couple of tiny trimmings into putting out roots through water propogation. So I put these tiny trimmings into a small vial of water.
We'll see what happens.

Over winter, some of my echevaria minimas got a little leggy. I had such good results water propogating my black prince I decided to do the same with these.

The heads of these babies are the size of my thumbnail. I can't wait to see how these turn out.

Update: I decided to add a fourth vial to my mini water propogation station. The three echevaria minima sisters are now joined by a mini jade (portulacaria afra) sprig.

Duskbirds #26 | “Tiny Jades” Originally Published: Monday July 31st, 2023
Sadly, also a true story. Happily, Portulacaria afra are very resilient. The jades were eaten at the start of the July, and all three plants are budding now! They should hopefully recover without too much issue.
More about our jade saga under the cut!

We also visited a bonsai nursery last week, and I wanted to ask them if they had any advice for sparrows eating our jades. It was very strange to me, because we had the jades out last year, and the birds didn’t touch them
I was expecting this to be a normal issue, and that there would be some sort of advice we could follow. To my surprise, the bonsai keeper said he had never heard of sparrows eating jades before! The reason I was interested in asking him was because I had tried to search this issue earlier this month, and was surprised that I couldn’t find anything about it. It being uncommon explains why my search had been fruitless.
However, he commented that, “They must have been thirsty.” This would make sense, because of how much water jades store in their leaves. There was a heat wave here last month, which could explain why the sparrows had demolished our poor jades in search for some relief from the heat.
We’ve been trying setting out a little water bowl/bird bath for the sparrows since then (just an empty planter tray we’ve been filling and emptying each day). The sparrows haven’t been touching it so far, but the weather also became cooler since our visit to the bonsai nursery. The sparrows haven’t seemed to be picking off the new buds that are sprouting, and hopefully if it becomes hot again, they’ll go for the water bowl instead this time.
Fingers crossed for our tiny jades!

Portulacaria afra Elephant Bush care and grow
Portulacaria afra Elephant Bush care and grow
Portulacaria afra Elephant Bush, Elephant Food, Dwarf Jade Portulacaria afra Elephant Bush belongs to a small species called the purslane. Most of the plants of this species are herbs, and some are succulent plants (cactuses). They are Under Shrubs plants, and are native to America and Africa in desert areas. It is distinguished by its juicy, fleshy leaves, and the flowers in this family are…

literally if a elephant saw a bush of portulacaria afra it would eat it right down to the stump and the stump would grow back fully over the course of a year, through the beauty of nature

I NEED HELP PLEASE, I'M TRYING TO SAVE A PLANT
So I found these 2 pots with succulents in them. They haven't been watered in years (the only little water they got was rain)... Needless to say they're looking rough. One was just dead, so I took it out of the pot and found a whole piece of polyester in it????
The other has also got polyester in it, BUT it's still alive (hardly). It's only got 6 leaves and I really don't know what I should do with it. Should I repot it and water it a lot? Is it better to try and propagate it? Would that work in its conditions?
I think it's a Portulacaria afra jacq, but it's looking pretty bad, so it might be something else. Here's a picture (ignore the background please):

Each plant has been meticulously sculpted to replicate the features of a genuine succulent. Inspired by real succulents including Echeveria chihuahuensis, Portulacaria afra (Elephant bush), Crassula perforata (String of buttons), Aeonium balsamiferum (Balsam houseleek), Matucana madisoniorum, rouge Berry, Opuntia leptocaulis (Tasajillo) and Epithelantha bokei (Pingpong ball cactus), this is a plant set that will never wither and brings anyone a touch of fun and happiness. 😛😛 The eight distinct succulent plants Bonsai is a wonderful and elegant ornaments that will make any space brighter and more appealing. 🥰🥰 Build your own succulent bonsai out of bricks to bring nature into your life! 😉😉

My plants tier list
Overwhealmingly good with rapid growth- String of hearts (i have a theory that it was growing so good just because it was above our heads when we were sleeping and it got too much of good vibes even without that much if sun), lucky bamboo (Małgosia) (Its not really a bamboo but it still is growing very fast), portulacaria afra lemon (it just doesn't need a lot to be happy. Just put her in direct sun she'll be fine like this for up to a month (tested))
No problems - Ivy (Pan Bluszczyk), pink princess (she got a lot of potential), string of pearls (Bambik) (had some troubles at first but it was entirely my fault)
Been an asshole - Bonsai (Lolita) (growing weird twigs out of his ass, growing well other than that), monstera monkey mask (Balbinka) (took us some time, is going very well for us now), fern (Bambi) (i'm figuring him out)

Ugh... An unexpected hailstorm hit while I was at at my middle school child's 8th grade continuation ceremony yesterday afternoon. All my outdoor succulent plants got hammered. 🥺
It wasn't even being predicted by the weather reports yesterday.
Most of them I think will survive. Like my crassula and portulacaria afra jade plants. Their leaves are damaged/broken/broken off, but their stems survived. It's early enough in the growing season I think there's a pretty good chance they'll push out new leaves. I may have to hard prune and repot some of them though.
However... Some of my other plants weren't so lucky. Some cacti, a few of my graptopetalums, and a tray of new plantlets i propogated and just moved to outdoors last weekend got absolutely pulped by the hail.
I'm going to take better stock of how many plants are salvageable and how many I lost later today.

🪴 Plant update🪴
1️⃣ New plant setup. I decided to elevate the giant monstera.
2️⃣ Another view of the new plant setup.
3️⃣ I’m not sure what this plant is, but it looks like it’s coming back to life. The leaves were previously whiter in color (like the leaves on the left side of the plant).
4️⃣ Possibly portulacaria afra (aka elephant bush succulent)
5️⃣ The ZZ plant flower is dead. I read that ZZ plant flowers are rare and do not last long.
6️⃣ The large monstera has a 2nd new leaf!
