"Nanti kuliahnya gantian setelah aku lulus, ya"

"Tahun depan kuliah, ya!" Berkali-kali kata itu keluar semenjak dua tahun lalu saat kami resmi menikah. Bahkan disaat kemarin aku terluka, pun, kalimat ini masih la lontarkan untuk menyemangatiku.

Semasa SMA, aku memang pernah menggebu pengin melanjutkan pendidikan tinggi sampai orang-orang terdekat mengenalku pada saat itu sebagai seseorang yang ambis. Sebagai orang desa yang minim informasi, aku mempersiapkan dan mengulik seluruh informasi bagaimana caranya supaya bisa kuliah terlebih di PTN. mengingat saat itu sekolahku belum ada yang kuliah di PTN. Dan memang hanya sedikit orang yang minat untuk melanjutkan pendidikan tinggi. Tapi karena satu dan hal lain, qadarullah aku memutuskan untuk gapyear dan memilih bekerja.

Setelah itu aku memutuskan untuk kembali memperjuangkan mimpi, sudah daftar mengisi berkas juga membayar administrasi untuk tes di salah satu universitas islam negeri, tapi karena satu dan lain hal lagi, aku memutuskan untuk mengurungkan niat itu. Akhirnya aku menyudahi mimpi itu. Menguburnya bersama tumpukkan mimpi lain dan tak mengharapkan semua itu harus terwujud. Lalu membuat prinsip bahwa belajar tak harus di tempat formal.

Hingga tibalah laki-laki itu membersamai perjalanan hidup. Memulainya dengan visi yang sama yang menjadi alasan untuk selalu mendukung satu sama lain.

Kini alasan pengin kuliah bukan lagi soal ambisi anak desa yang pengin mengubah nasib wajahnya. Tapi soal kebermanfaatan diri untuk kepentingan dakwah dan umat. Sudah tidak menjadikan PTN dan PTS sebagai patokan keren atau enggaknya saat kuliah. Karena memang ada hal-hal yang enggak bisa kita dapatkan saat enggak kuliah, yang mungkin salah satunya adalah pengalaman. Walau begitu, ilmu tetap bisa kita dapatkan di mana saja.

Ternyata masih ada yang mau menghidupkan mimpi yang kita pun rasanya lupa akan mimpi yang kita miliki sendiri. Tapi yang paling penting adalah la mendukungku bertumbuh sebagai perempuan dan ibu. la memberi fasilitas supaya sebagai ibu aku bisa belajar dengan tenang dalam meluaskan peran. ia menghadirkan keutuhan dirinya sebagai seseorang yang mendukung. Mengarahkan ku untuk mengikuti berbagai kelas. Kelas menulis, kelas jadi istri, kelas jadi ibu, mengkaji islam, mengikuti komunitas, dll.

Begitu seharusnya pasangan. la tak mengecilkan peran sebagai kepala atau pun ibu rumah tangga. Dan memilih untuk mengapresiasi hal-hal kecil hal yang ada pada pasangan. Mendukungnya untuk terus bertumbuh menjadi istri dan ibu, juga suami dan ayah yang baik, dan sama-sama menyebarkan kebaikan itu. Tiada lain yang disemogakan dari saling mendukung untuk bertumbuh dan menyemogakan seluruh hasilnya bermuara pada ridho Allah saja.

1.04.2023 — First chapter and vocabulary quiz due on Monday, so I’ll be cooped up in my room, watching lectures, reading, and studying, this entire weekend. I have to record an introduction video tomorrow for a discussion, so that’ll be… fun. During winter break, I bought a big ring light tripod thing, so maybe I’ll get fancy with it. We’ll see.

monday, january 16

hi, i've started school again :) i've been working as a cna, and i enjoy patient care. but i also wanted to use my biology degree. so i'm working towards going for an accelerated nursing program

i'm taking pre-requisites that my bio degree didn’t cover (developmental psych, nutrition, and pathophysiology), and all of the classes are online. it’s been a transition to get back into school while also working. but it’s a new year and i'm trying to be optimistic haha

april 2nd, 2024.

today was supposed to be way more productive than it actually was, but from the get go I realized I had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed - i was so stressed out and irritated at anything and everything. still tried though: i did the dishes, cleaned up the house and got a bit of citations logged from Secchi’s Public Policies book. not enough productivity, not by far, but something is still better than nothing!

I'm an undergrad psych student that dreams to be where you are in the future (studying clinical psych)!

I'm striving to be a psychologist but I've heard how competitive it is. As someone who is in postgrad, I was wondering if you'd be okay giving some advice, what scores you had to get in ungrads and honours, what volunteering you maybe did and how postgrad life is!!

Hey! It’s so awesome that you want to go into clinical psych!

I went to a pretty competitive university for undergrad and majored in Psychology with a minor in Disability studies. I ended up with a 3.8 major and overall GPA and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I worked as a FWS student on a clinical trial that focused on helping people with intellectual disabilities access mental health care as well as some odd jobs here and there. I also volunteered at my state department of mental health during the summers while I was home from school and with the National Counsel for Mental Wellbeing as a state captain for Hill Day.

I applied to a small college in my hometown for Postgrad because I wanted the small college feel and it is a really reputable program whose grads see a lot of success. I got in and I absolutely love it. The program has wonderful professors and they are really focused on graduating strong therapists. I will be a masters level Licensed Professional Counselor when I graduate in May 2025.

My advice for you is to find a place to volunteer at that will get you some good hours and face time with the right people. You don’t have to always be doing psychology related things with them. When I volunteered for DMH, I helped with their mental health conference and with Santa’s helpers which purchased presents for kids of patients at the center. I wasn’t always doing psychology stuff but I made some really strong connections and they wrote me excellent letters of recommendation. I wish I had gotten more acquainted with my professors in undergrad but it was hard because I went to such a large school. Find the people who value you and your work and they will give back by writing you glowing recommendations which go a long way in the application process. The more you volunteer and get experience, the more you’ll have to write about in your admissions essay, which I think carried me through the process.

Post grad is hard but it’s focused on what you love and is training you for your dream career. It’s worth every minute. Get as much experience as you can, clinical or not, so you make those connections and get to know people who have influence in different areas. Keep doing what you’re doing! We need people like you in our field! Hope this helps!

when we are young we are taught to align our routines and desires with people our own age. we take classes together. we work together. we eat lunch together. we laugh together. we grow together. until you blink and you’re in your twenties and for the first time in your life , every single person in your age bracket is headed for a sunset that is a different shade of orange to yours. some decide to pack a bag and travel the world. some decide to settle down in their hometown. some decide to find themselves in multiple jobs in multiple cities. some pursue creative passions. some decided at age eleven and stuck to it. some changed their minds ten times over. for the first time, nobody your age is balancing on the same rope you are. it is scary to worry about not having anything or anyone to hold on to. it can be daunting to be unsure of the road ahead when the lines seem so blurred, but the beauty of being on your own path is that, you can never fall off it - you can only be redirected 🍃
