katniss brings peeta bouquets of wildflowers from the meadow and woods after she hunts. peeta puts them in a vase they bought together and that he painted. peeta let’s katniss be the first taste tester for anything new he thinks of adding to the bakery and she tries them all eagerly and asks if he ever needs other herbs. katniss does the laundry because she picked up a few tricks from hazelle over the years and peeta was never very good at it. peeta cooks because katniss always had to growing up and he wants her to not have to have that responsibility. katniss opens the window for peeta before they go to bed each night and peeta always makes sure the top sheet is untucked before katniss gets in because she hates falling asleep with it tucked. when katniss learns she’s pregnant, peeta paints the walls of the nursery and she builds the crib herself. they fit in a balanced way. they make each other stronger and though they have their differences they are not differences that harm them but rather ones that make them work together more smoothly <3

37. Cleaning the other person’s lips with a lick and a kiss.
Post-Mockingjay
"What is that?"
Since Peeta's hands were full of sticky dough and he wasn't ready to clean them off yet because that would be admitting failure, and goddammit everything about this day wasn't allowed to be shit, he raised a shoulder and wiped his forehead against a corner of his t-shirt to catch the itch at his hairline that emerged when Katniss walked in the room. He'd had too little sleep, too much sticky summer heat, and too many shiny thoughts hanging out in the corner of his mind, ready to drop him into the grip of an episode if he let his guard down. A day where going through the motions of living hardly felt worth it. He couldn't say that, though, not to Katniss.
He was definitely stalling. "It's supposed to be bread."
"Oh." Katniss's tone implied the lumpy, off-white mess covering the countertop didn't look like bread.
"What is it actually? A mess."
She moved and stood next to him at the counter, peering around his arm. "It looks a little wet," she said.
Peeta huffed. "It's a type of sourdough, a recipe I tried from memory, but obviously, I used too much...something wet." He didn't mean to sound so defeated over something as minor as ruined bread, but there it was. He reached for the dry towel and began wiping the sticky bits embedded in the crevices of his nailbeds and between his fingers.
She moved closer to him, slipping her arm around his waist and resting her forehead against his bicep. "Tell me what I can do to help," she said. Her voice was soft; the offer didn't seem to solely mean the bread dough.
Peeta dropped the towel and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against his body so tight he had to remind himself not to crush her as the wave of emotion hit fast and sharp. The thing about the bad days was how lonely they made him feel. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. "This is good," he said, leaning some of his weight on her. Katniss never seemed to mind. She seemed to like holding him as much as he liked being held.
As they stood together, he felt the pressure lessen, dribble out drip, drip, drip, until he didn't feel so consumed by it. He stepped away from Katniss.
She smiled brilliantly at him. "Better?"
"I think so," he said, clearing his throat.
The mess on the counter was disposed of in short order. Katniss held the refuse bin up to the ledge while Peeta used his bench scraper to scoop the whole mess away with a sense of finality that made him smile to himself. She helped him further clean the kitchen, the two working in companionable silence. Once they were done, he remembered the leftover chocolate-studded rolls from yesterday. He had no idea how he'd forgotten them.
The day ended much better than it began, with Katniss climbing into his lap and licking a smidge of chocolate from the corner of his lips. She kissed him then, further playing aggressor which he loved, sighing against his lips, her body melting against his like she needed and wanted him as much as he needed and wanted her.

do you ever just sit and think about how much everlark must love the fact that their children are (minus the eye colors) perfect replicas of each other? that they each have a carbon copy of the person they love the most in the world? a love that was so deeply rooted in their childhood years? because i do

"Ribbon" - now on Ao3!
Tumblr media
Summary: Sometimes, the simplest things hold the biggest memories. Post-Mockingjay. From Katniss’ and Buttercup’s POV.
-----
It is time to clean house.
I tell myself that as I stare into what was Prim’s bedroom. It stands frozen in time, a shrine that was never meant to be. There’s still an imprint of her on the quilt that rests on the empty bed. I can almost see her there, legs curled and looking over her book of medicinal plants and herbs.
She would’ve turned 15 this year.

There have been many posts crediting President Snow for his “genius” decision having the tributes being previous winners for the 75th Hunger Games, however, I think it is probably the biggest mistake he makes in the series... And Plutarch’s smartest move.
The main rule in the Hunger Games is that there is always one winner. Not only is the winner awarded a fancy house and a large sum of money, but they are paraded around the capital. Their status is elevated and their home district views them as a celebrity. It is the only ticket to “rise up” in society. We as the reader know that being a Victor is still a terrible fate (body sold to capital citizens, used as a prop, forced to be a mentor), however, they symbolize a win for the district as a whole and enforce the hatred districts have for each other.
In the 74th Games, Crane makes the decision to change the rules and allow two tributes from the same district to win the games. Whether this is purely for drama to make the romance element sell better or a clever way to introduce false hope, all tributes believe this rule is real. There is a chance Katniss and Peeta can really win together. When the rug is pulled out from under them, they are forced to choose who will win causing all hope of their dual survival to be lost. Both Katniss and Peeta want the other to win, however, they know the toll it will take emotionally on that individual to be the lone survivor (survivor’s guilt). With no hope of a fair life, they are both willing to die together creating an all or nothing situation. Crane is forced to let both of them win, knowing that if no one wins the games, the districts might realize that “their sacrifice” was for nothing. He believes two winners are better than none (And honestly he’s lowkey right), and it costs him his life.
During Snow’s conversation with Crane he states, “Fear does not work as long as there is hope”. Katniss and Peeta winning together is not inherently revolutionary, it was not done to spite the capital, but Snow cannot let go of the idea that they broke the carefully constructed rules of the games, and, therefore, must be punished. He forgets that Katniss and Peeta are not universally liked, especially in districts where they had to kill their tributes (district 1 and 2). Snow blames Crane for even introducing the idea of two winners in the first place, the rules of the Hunger Games have been solidified for good reason. Ironically, the ending of the games is not what brings on the rebellion, it is really Rue’s relationship with Katniss. The kindness Katniss shows shows during Rue’s death unites the Districts for a moment, and creates a connection between District 11 and District 12.
This push for fear and punishment blind Snow when Plutarch becomes the game maker. Although all the districts know the 75th Games will have a twist, deciding to draw tributes from the existing Victors is a critical mistake. Yes, it allows Snow to “punish” Katniss for bending the rules, however, Snow forgets that the Victors symbolize hope to a necessary degree for society to function. The districts need to feel like they can win something, they need some distraction of power to stop them from realizing they are constantly being manipulated. Taking two of the golden children away from every district unites the efforts of rebellion. It is the clearest way to say “no, you are all losers at the end of the day”. This blatant reminder is not needed, and spreads anger throughout the entire Panem system.
Snow’s weakness is he doesn’t understand that fear cannot work without the idea of mercy. There must be some possible reward to work for, or hopelessness will take over and people will act without care for their lives. If both options bring death and torture, why not rebel? The additional scenes in Mockingjay Part 1, demonstrate this notion perfectly (the dam in District 5 and the bombs in District 7).

thinking about how dandelions are the first flowers kids bring their mothers. how they’re just a weed, but in such a small fist, presented with such a proud grin, they become a bouquet. it’s a sweet, thoughtful thing to any mother.
but imagine it for katniss. who has always connected the flower to life and hope. imagine katniss receiving a handful of dandelions from her child for the first time.

Inspired in part by beloved Gravity, by @katnissmellarkkk and by Roi, by Videoclub! The song doesn't have the everlark vibes per se but the lyrics are so cute and very snapshot like. The fic is perfect, very natural paced and full of longing, 100% recommend!!! Please do zoom in for hi-res, gave my life and tears for this one 💖

the funniest part of mockingjay was when Gale was like, ‘omg Katniss, Finnick totally has a crush on you,’ and the poor guy was loosing his mind being away from Annie

with the way katniss neglected herself so much after mockingjay that she would barely even eat unless greasy sae was there, I imagine her hair would get matted in that time and one of the first physical touches between everlark after their hug is peeta gently working his way through every single knot for hours and it being therapeutic for both of them. for him to concentrate on one thing and work with his hands again. for her to just sit back and feel something besides the fog of her mind or the drowning grief. he apologises each time he has to cut out a section or it simply comes out (and he’s still unsure if his apologies hold a deeper meaning yet). in the end, he would attempt katniss’s signature braid and laugh so hard at the disjointed mess that katniss has no idea what’s going on back there but laughs along with him because it feels so good to hear that for the first time in years really. he unravels it and instead does two simple braids down her back, just like his girl who sang the valley song

After the war, Katniss and Peeta strip their homes of all the frivolous capital decor. The useless articles are boxed in the basement - they’re too pointless even to donate.
During one of her visits, chaos queen, Johanna is riffling through their basement (because why not) and finds the boxes. She hauls them upstairs setting the canvases up for target practice and teaches Katniss and Peeta the art of ax throwing.
Haymitch sits on his porch, ‘supervising’, suppling the liquor, and donating to their loot.
When those are thoroughly destroyed, they begin launching the ceramics as target practice for Katniss; Tossing multiple in the air at a time to see how many she can hit at once.
When their cathartic destruction is complete, Peeta collects the discarded shards of pottery to make mosaics.
